Chapter I

Chapter 1

Kagome Higurashi was almost finished with her sweeping duties. She had assembled a large amount of dirt and dust near the entrance of the shrine, and was preparing to say good riddance to it all.

Then a motorcycle gang, what appeared to be the west side Serpents, came roaring by along the street. The high speed of their cycles swirled up the air around them, taking all of the dust and other materiels and spreading them back into the shrine's courtyard.

Waving her thatch woven broom at the departing cycle gang, her eyes ablaze, she quickly calmed down.

"humph. That's the second time this week alone." she muttered to herself as she went back to finish what she had started.

Kagome, along with her grandfather, was the caretaker of the shrine, and in addition, she helped to care for several children, basically like an orphange, although some of the children's parents were still alive, it's just that they either didn't want to take care of them, or didn't know how to.

Three of those kids came running out into the courtyard right now, a basketball in one of their hands.

"Monkey in the middle?" asked Shippou as he handled the basketball. The red haired little boy was one of the true orphans here at the shrine, and had been the first one that Kagome had taken in, after he had witnessed the murder of his parents at the hand of the north Thunder gang. It apparently had been a hit gone wrong, in that Shippou's father resembled one of other gang members in town.

"How about around the world instead?" countered Rin. Kagome didn't know much about her, except that her father apparently was Sesshomaru, the elder brother of the Taisho clan and second in command of the Serpents. He occasionally stopped in to check on her, and damn near killed one of the other kids with his poision whip who was picking on her. Then he had damned near killed her as well when she stepped in to stop him.

The third kid, Kohaku, remained silent. Sango was his older sister, and he was a special case for the orphange. His parents were dead, but in a sick and horrible twist, he was the one who had killed them. An unknown gang member had given him a firearm and shown him how to use it, pretending that it was a toy gun of sorts. He then encouraged the little kid to play "cowboy and indians" with his parents. Two shots later, and the parents were dead. When he realized what he had done, the shock hitting him, well, he still hasn't recovered, and may never recover according to some of the trauma experts.

"Hi guys, what are you up to?" asked Kagome as she set the broom aside for a moment.

"Not much Kagome-chan. We were feeling bored, so we thought we'd play some basketball or something like that." replied Rin with a toothy smile.

"Ok, but be careful. I don't want to have to bandage any more bruised elbows or knees." replied Kagome sternly. The three of them nodded, and with a sigh, Kagome went back to her sweeping.

As she swept, her thoughts turned inwards, thinking about her life as it was. She was seventeen, yet her life could hardly be called normal for a girl her age. She was boyfriendless, well, really friendless period, since she devoted all her time and energies to keeping the shrine and orphanage going. If it wasn't for that, well she had a nice trim and sexy body in her opinion, and apparently in the minds of some of the gang members who would whistle at her as they passed by.

Being reminded of the recently passed gang that blew the dust back into the courtyard, she shook her mind free and devoted her thoughts to finishing the chore at hand...
