Chapter 2
The Sword of the Kami

Looking of into the distance he could not quell the hate that swelled in his heart for his sire and his transgressions against him. Now he was forced to live the rest of his days alone without the onna he who had meant so much to him. He had hated for centuries thinking she left him after he had given her something that meant so much to him and his kind.

A mating mark was not something given lightly, Inu Youkai mate for life. When a mate passes on their soul is still bound to that of their mate, if they never re-mated that is. The youkai in question could mate the reincarnation of their late mate, that was how thing was done when a mate was taken prematurely. He had spent all those years hating her when he could have still been with her, at least in spirit. He could have been with her soul; for it was her soul he loved, her beauty was amplified because of her caring heart. However he had once found her reincarnation 500 years later, he knew it was her because her soul called out to his in a way lost mates souls would. He had done nothing with the information except stay as far away from her as he could. Now there was no chance of her soul being reincarnated because it is not held captive in a jewel.

He knew Midoriko was his Mitsukai's reincarnation, not only because of the pull of her soul but because they also looked similar. He had met her once and that was when he had found out who she was exactly. The feel and smell of her powers were slightly different which he could only guess as to why, but he did have a theory.

Having learnt much about the soul in his search for knowledge, he noticed that if a soul exited in the living realm because of malicious circumstances the soul will either taint or lock away some of its natural power. When a soul as pure as his Koishii died the way she did her soul would be tainted thus giving Midoriko's powers a different feel and smell. She was also not as strong as she could have been with Mitsukai's soul. This was probably why she died the way she did by making that accursed jewel.

Now because of Midoriko's mistakes he would never again be reunited with the soul of his fallen mate. Before reading the scroll he would have said "Good riddance!" or "I don't care!" but now that he knew the truth he would say something much different.

"I hate you father!" he whispered furiously while looking to the heavens. 'Even in death you find away to spite me!' he thought blaming the whole thing on his late sire, because in his eyes he was to blame. He would never have wasted such precious time he would have been there and fought for her. 'She never would have made the jewel in the first place, because I would have been there to protect her.' he thought to himself while closing his eyes trying to ignore the pain in his chest.

Sesshomaru was in need of a serous distraction so he began to think, if he wanted to be with her soul again then he would have work to do. Not all was lost; all he had to do was start collecting the jewel and then release her soul. As he thought about how to go about doing this the answer became obvious, he knew, well sort of, the guardian of the jewel; maybe she would know how to free the soul inside. The only two seriously collecting the jewel was Naraku and his hanyou half brother, so he could kill two birds with one stone.

Satisfied with his decision he gathered his small group and left for Inuyasha's forest where he could easily find his half brother.

(This following section will be about Kagome and from her point of view)

Kagome was your average girl, or so many thought. Kagome lived two separate lives here in Modern day Japan and in the Feudal Era Japan. As hard as it was to explain, she felt like she belonged there, like she was more at home in the forest with youkai than in the era she was born in.

When Kagome turned 15 her life changed dramatically, promising never to be the same again and it wasn't. The moment the centipede youkai pulled her down the well was the first changing point in her life. Sometimes she wished to have just hit the bottom instead of showing up in the feudal era. Do not misunderstand, she loved her friends dearly but sometimes the pain was just too much to bear.

She had no special expectations for her life but she did not expect it to turn out the way it did. All she wanted was to graduate high school, go to collage, get married and have kids. Instead she was thrust into a world of youkai, magic and jewels, she often asked herself, 'What did I do to deserve this?' but she had never received an answer. Why must she fall in love with someone who could not love her back? Why was she so blind to that fact, why did she think it would be any different?

All her problems were the very reason she was now in the modern era to get a break from Inuyasha and shard hunting. The entire heartache and body ache was running its toll on her and she needed a break.

(BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ) the alarm clock sounded and the sleeping onna on the bed groaned. Slapping the clock to quiet the noise she cracked open a sleepy fogged eye. It took a second before her vision cleared and the fog left her. Quietly sighing she shifted to sit up on her bed and stretched her limbs. She had school today so she needed to get dressed soon if she had any hopes of making it on time.

She dressed with haste and headed towards school. Once she had made it to the bus stop she heard three female voices calling to her

"Kagome! … Kagome! … Kagome!" called Yuka, Eri, and Ayumi while jogging to catch up with her.

She groaned. 'I wish I could change my name.' she thought to herself while turning to wave at her friends "Hey guys how have ya been?" she asked the approaching girls.

It was Eri who answered, "We are on our way to university. How about you how is your violent two-timing boyfriend?" she asked while the three leaned slightly forward in gossip mode.

Kagome sighed audibly, "He is not my boyfriend." she answered before she could continue three audible gasps could be heard.

"Oh no did you guys break up!?" asked Ayumi while placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.

Before Kagome could answer another voice spoke, "Good, you finally dumped that loser! It was about time if you ask me! You were way too good for him anyway!" Yuka stated heatedly as she remembered all the things Kagome's jerk of a boyfriend put her through.

"YUKA! Shh! you are making her feel bad!." Eri interrupted when she noticed the sadden eyes of Kagome.

"What? It is true! It's not like he dumped her right?" Yuka said while looking at Kagome. Once she saw the look in Kagome's eyes her eyes widened "Oh No, Kagome I am so sorry!" she said because she now realized that he had dumped her.

Her three friends all crowded around her; they could not believe she was not the one to dump him. They did not know much about her relationship with her two-timing boyfriend but they did know they had never had sex because she had told them so on many occasions.

"Hey look on the bright side Kagome; at least you never had sex with him!" Yuka said trying to lessen the blow she sent to her friend with her harsh words from before.

Kagome gave them a tired smile, she really hated this. She loved her best friends but she hated not being able to tell them the whole story. 'Even if I did they would think I was insane.' she thought dryly as she recognized the truth in her thoughts.

The rest of the way to school was spent in silence. For this Kagome was thankful, she really didn't ever want to rehash all the hurt feelings.

The school day went by fast; she only had three classes.

Walking up the shrine steps she saw her Jii-chan sweeping the shrine grounds. When he noticed her he called to her. "Kagome come here!" he said while walking into the storage room.

She knew what he wanted, after all today was her birthday. She knew he wanted to give her something 'that is priceless' in his words not hers, so she followed like a good granddaughter. "Yes Jii-chan?" she asked while walking into the storage room.

Her Jii-chan was sitting on the floor with a long box in his hand. "Come sit down here Kagome." he said while patting to the space next to him.

She sat where he asked and waited for him to speak. She licked her dry lips as she watched her grandfather wipe some dust from the box.

"This darling was just sent to the shrine for safe keeping, but when I saw it I knew I had to give it to you. I have never been one to ignore my sixth sense so I will give this to you for safe keeping; I hope you can find great use for it." He said as he passed the box to her lap.

Looking down at the box in her lap she carefully opened it. A gasp was the only sound she made while looking upon the most beautiful sword she had ever seen. The sword was long and pure silver. The hilt of the sword was also while it was wrapped in white and pink. She could tell the sword belonged to a female by the look and the length of it. It was the most beautiful sword she had ever seen! "Thank you Jii-chan, it's beautiful." She whispered in awe of the sword.

Her grandfather smiled happily, he was glad she liked his gift. He was surprised however because she had seemed to like it more then he had originally thought she would. 'It could have something to do with going to the feudal era and fighting youkai.' He thought before he voiced his opinion, "I expect you to take it with you to the feudal era! I will feel better knowing you are armed with more then just a bow. Maybe you could have one of your friends show you how to use it correctly so you can protect yourself better." He told her with a smile on his face; it did make him feel strangely better knowing that she will have another weapon when she traveled to the other side of the well.

She nodded her head affirmatively that she will take it with her to the other side, and keep it on her at all times. Standing up she took the sword of the box and held it in her hands. 'It is the perfect length and weight for me to weld easily!' She thought while weighing the sword in her right hand. "Looks like I have to find a way to strap you to me huh?" she said out loud absently to herself and to the sword.

Her grandfather had gotten up hearing her problem and walked to the back of the storage room. Once he found what he was looking for he headed back toward his granddaughter "Here." he said to Kagome while watching her take an experimental swing.

Hearing her Jii-chan she stopped and turned to him seeing a leather strap in his hand. She raised a questioning brow to him; she had no idea what it was.

Smiling at her confusion, "Turn your back to me. " he said while using a guiding hand to help her. Once her back was to him he took the leather strip out of his hand and unraveled it. He carefully placed it around her so the strip went across her waist. He took the sword from her hand and the saya from the box and sheathed the sword. He next slid the sword and saya into the leather strap now adorning her waist. "There." he said as he placed it in a comfortable position to be pulled and tied the tassels adorning the saya to the strap.

"Thanks so much Jii-chan but I have to go and pack so I can return before Inuyasha comes and starts screaming that I'm late!" she said hugging him with a smile before excusing herself to go and pack.

After about an hour had passed since her Jii-chan gave her the present, she was ready to leave. She grabbed her backpack and ran toward the well. Once she reached the well house she opened the door, closed it behind her, ran down the steps and then launched herself into the well.

The telltale sign of her time travel had came as the blue lights surrounded her then took her to the feudal era.
