Tohoku Vacation
Chapter Two
…
How long had it been since she set foot on this beloved shrine?
Kagome concluded, once she stepped out of the car and breathed in the fresh untainted air, that it had been much too long. Clad in a pair of dark blue jeans and a beige floral patterned blouse with sparkly brown flats, she made sure to thank Kito-san for giving her a lift and lugging her suitcase with her, made to enter her first home.
She was a bit early though and knew her jiijii wouldn’t be expecting her for at least another hour. So, she started walking towards the main house and upon reaching one of the sliding shoji doors, deposited her suitcase in front of it. She couldn’t help the content smile that danced on her lips and again, she inhaled deeply. The air and scenery was just so much better here than in Tokyo.
Six months away had definitely been too long, but work just wouldn’t let her leave. Of course, that was until she literally threatened Ban with a resignation and a graphic image of how she would go about divesting him of his much adored family jewels to which he grossly paled and abruptly sent her away to start packing for her long awaited vacation.
“Kagome-chan!?”
Hearing the familiar voice, she spun around and within seconds she had the older woman locked in a tight embrace. “Saki-san!”
The old cook chuckled softly and returned the hug. “You’re early dear.”
Kagome pulled away, smiling sheepishly. “Yeah, I kinda bummed a ride from Kito-san instead of waiting for the tourist bus.”
“Ah, I see.”
“Where’s Jiijii?”
“Last time I saw him he was making his way towards the garden, probably to go chat with the guest.”
A delicately arched eyebrow rose in surprise. “Guest?”
Saki smiled, nodding her head and refusing to say any more.
Kagome gave her a skeptical look but didn’t prod the old cook for details, knowing that she wouldn’t get them anyway.
“Mmhmm. He better be cute!” She saw the twinkle in Saki’s chocolate eyes and knew she had guessed right. This guest was a male and a cute one at that!
“Ne Saki-san, what’s for dinner?”
The old woman laughed. Kagome was no doubt conjuring up images of her favorite dishes. “Yakitori, shrimp and vegetable tempura along with some home made miso soup.”
Her blue eyes widened and Kagome practically drooled right there. Saki-san was the best cook she had ever come across. ‘Magical cooking fingers’ was what she would sometimes call the old woman in the kitchen.
“Mmm, my tummy’s rumbling already! I think I’ll go find gramps now and introduce myself to this oh so mysterious guest of ours.”
Waving at the old woman, Kagome hopped down the stairs and took the path leading to the gardens. Once she passed the main house and still without a sign of the old shrine keeper, she decided to announce her arrival.
“Jiijii!”
Kagome continued to walk the curving path, all the while soaking in the blooming nature around her and wondering where the old coot was.
“Kagome-chan!”
She turned towards the voice, face lighting up when she saw her jiijii standing next to a tall lean man with silver blue hair. Her sapphire eyes flickered over his form from afar and finally settled on his face. Oh yeah, he was definitely a demon. Only demons were this beautiful. And speaking of demons, what the hell was one doing in a shrine? She was almost positive that she’d never find her boss Bankotsu who also happened to be a demon in one of these. Well, maybe if she pulled her puppy dog eyes and fake tears on him, but still, it wasn’t the ideal place for a demon to be. Shouldn’t they be swimming in their billions of dollars or maiming some unfortunate souls with their dangerous claws and shiny fangs?
Pulling herself out of her mental trappings, she quickly made her way over to the pair, all the while trying to ignore said demon’s intense stare. Did she have something on her face? Or maybe she had something in her teeth? Kami but that would be beyond embarrassing if she did!
All that aside, she couldn’t help but run the last few steps and pull her ojii into a fierce hug. “Jiijii! I’ve missed you!”
The old man was almost knocked off his feet. “You act like you haven’t seen me in centuries.”
Kagome pulled back and laughed. “Well, it feels like it.”
“Ah Kag-chan, let me introduce you to Sesshoumaru Taisho, our guest for the month.” His hand gestured towards the demon beside him.
She looked up, finally getting a close up view and smiled. She noticed his markings, the blue crescent and deep maroon stripes on either cheek and knew he had to be of high status. His posture and general aura just screamed ‘bow down and respect me or else die a most painful death’.
“Kagome Higurashi. It’s nice to meet you Mr. Taisho.” ‘Hmmm, and why does that name ring a bell?’
“It’s a pleasure Ms. Higurashi.”
“Nuh uh. No Ms. Higurashi-ing here. Please, just Kagome.”
“Then I must extend your offer. Call me Sesshoumaru.”
The way he said it sent a little shiver down her spine. His deep baritone voice, thick as honey and smooth as silk, struck right at the center of her. Regaining her senses, she nodded, but just as soon, her bright blue eyes widened.
“Ne, Sesshoumaru Taisho, as in Taisho International?”
He nodded and she could see the faint lifting of the corner of his mouth. Offhandedly, she wondered how he would look with a real smile on those nice lips of his. But all too soon, a soft laugh escaped from her peachy lips. Bankotsu was always talking about this guy and how he wanted to constantly pound his very pretty face in and wipe the floor with his just as pretty hair.
“My boss is always talking about you.” Kagome explained when she saw his questioning eyes.
“And who is this boss of yours?”
“Bankotsu Hamada. I’m his assistant that keeps him on his toes.”
Recognition dawned on his features as a small smirk touched his lips. “I see.”
Kagome grinned knowingly, blue eyes twinkling. Judging from his expression, he knew how her boss felt about him.
“If you don’t mind Sesshoumaru,” She tested his name and found that she liked how it rolled off her tongue, “I need to borrow this old coot for a while.”
“Old coot?” Old man Higurashi, brought out of his musings, huffed indignantly, mumbling about disrespectful young people nowadays.
Eyes lingering on Kagome a little longer, Sesshoumaru nodded.
“You will join us for dinner?”
“Perhaps.”
Kagome smiled. “I’ll take that as a yes then.”
