Journey to Nowhere

A/N: More details about Kagome's life prior to this point in the next chapter.

Golden eyes stared up at the wooden beams of the ceiling, blinking lazily from time to time. Kagome decided that it was finally time to get up and face the day. With an exaggerated ‘hmph’ she blew her long bangs out of her face, got up, and headed to her bathing chamber.

After wasting too much time in the bath, Kagome quickly dressed in a short yukata and tied her hair up into a tight pony tail, mindful of her short, black dog ears. She tucked a short sword into the sash at her waist, and headed outside into the crisp morning air.

Ichiro, Kuro and Jiro sat patiently waiting near the entryway to Kagome’s wing of the palace. Kagome avoided looking behind or beside her, or at her protectors, focusing her eyes on the treeline ahead of the palace gate. It would do her no good now to look back at the home she would probably never return to.

Her companions padded along silently behind her. Once outside the gates, Kagome stopped suddenly, still staring ahead, and bit out coldly, “Go.”

With a quick glance at their mistress, the three large dogs broke into a run towards the trees, disappearing from sight within seconds. They did as they were told, but they had no concept of what freedom would mean for them, or what they would do. They would stick together, that they knew for certain, and wait in the hopes that they may be called back to serve their mistress again someday.

Once the dogs were out of her sight, Kagome began walking west at a brisk pace. She should probably reach her destination by nightfall if she moved quickly enough. Behind her, the spell she had placed on her family’s home began to take effect, the entire compound beginning to fade from sight, and trees born from magic growing to take its place.

After making her way through the forest surrounding her palace and reaching the boundary of her land, Kagome broke into a sprint along the dirt path winding its thin way through the tall grass towards the next group of trees a short distance away. The sooner she could make it to the next forest and the cover of the trees, the better. Hopefully none of the guards patrolling the neighboring Western Lands would see her leaving her territory. Once Lord Sesshomaru learned that his northeastern border was now left unprotected without being given prior notice, he would be furious.

The sun was starting to lower in the sky as Kagome reached the narrow canyon that she had been seeking. Moving quickly among the boulders and dry river bed, she could see what she had been looking for – a tunnel, protected by an illusion, marked by a gnarled piece of driftwood the width of her thigh sticking out of the gravel in front of it. Placing her hand over the barrier protecting the tunnel, Kagome whispered an incantation. The barrier wavered, and Kagome stepped into blackness and the unknown.
