Chapter 2

Sango quickly crept around the building, it was in the middle of day, but this was a large town, and if she was careful she could slip in unnoticed. The inn was two floors with no back door and one second floor window at the back of the building, ‘This guy really likes his privacy,’ thought Sango. She stood for a moment staring at the window and noticed no movement.

She took a small grapple from her belt and flung it through the window, a loud sound followed when the hook hit the floor of the room.

Another moment of waiting…

Silence…

Sango slowly pulled and the hook lodged itself in the crease of the window. She walked to the wall of the building and planted her foot before pushing. It didn’t push in, which meant it was made from flattened wood, probably oak. Without further pondering on the making of the building Sango pulled herself up the wall, planting her feet as softly as she could as she ascended.

“Miss, what are you doing?”

Sango froze and looked down, there were kids in the back ally, playing a game of ball, and one of them had seen her. “Um,” she looked around and shrugged, “The front door is jammed, and I need to get inside and fix it.”

After a strong moment of silence the little boy nodded his head, “Okay.”

He went back to playing and Sango breathed a sigh of relief, the last thing she needed was a kid shouting that some lady was climbing up the back wall of the inn.

She quickly slipped inside the window and looked around; the room was dark save for the light from the window and a sparkling fireplace on the left wall. Books on explosives were scattered across the floor on a sparkling silk red rug. Whoever that innkeeper was he was intentionally housing a murderer.

She picked up one of the many books that were scattered and read the title, ‘The Art of Disintegration Bombs’. As she looked at the text she shook her head, this was their guy alright, no doubt about it.

Sango walked over to the fireplace and noticed a plush red chair in front of it with a piece of parchment on it. After she saw what it said she scooped it up and put it in the book. Taking a quick look out the window to make sure the children were gone she leapt through it and walked quickly back around to the front, where the rest of the group waited out of view of the inn keeper.

“So, what’cha find?” asked an annoyed Inuyasha.

Sango took her weapon and kimono back from Miroku and quickly dawned them both. “I found this.” She handed Inuyasha the book and paper.

Inuyasha opened it and sniffed, “Tch, I can’t read this shit, Kagome, see what it says.”

Kagome took the contents from Inuyasha and looked, “A book on a fighting technique with explosives, and this technique matches the way that woman died.”

“It seems that the inn keeper is indeed harboring our suspect,” said Miroku.

“Does that mean he’s going to come back?” asked Shippo.

Sango nodded at Shippo, “If he didn’t he would be leaving his hit list behind,” she said, pointing at the paper she put in the book, “Ten names, two of them crossed out.”

“An assassin,” growled Inuyasha.

“What is the next name on the list Kagome-san?” asked Miroku.

Kagome looked back down at the list, “The next name is Kyoya Suda.”

“That is the mayor of this village,” said Miroku, “We are obligated to warn and protect him.”

“It’s just a waste of time,” said Inuyasha, getting a glare from Kagome.

“Inuyasha, you know it would be the right thing to do,” she said.

“Fine, but our stay can’t be too long, who knows what Naraku is up to?”

----------

“I see,” said Kyoya, his wrinkles pushing together as he kneeled on the mat, “That was my grand daughter you saw disintegrated.”

Miroku raised an eyebrow, “That was your granddaughter? We did not arrive in time, I offer my sincerest apologies.”

Kyoya shook his head and held up his hand, “All I ask is that which you have already done, inform me of my granddaughter’s death and warn me of the impending threat.”

“We would be glad to help beyond that, protecting you that is,” said Miroku.

“That would be splendid; I should pay you for your troubles.”

Kagome shook her head, “We don’t need money, but staying here until the problem is solved should be ok.”

Miroku nodded in agreement, “Yes, I believe that would be all.”

“That’s a new one monk, you usually cheat people out of money and lodgings,” said Inuyasha.

“Now now Inuyasha, I would never do such a thing.”

“Uh huh, sure.”

----

Inuyasha shifted positions against the wall, putting his head in different positions in the process of trying to get comfortable. Finally, he accepted defeat and sat straight, letting his eyes wander around the wooden room. Miroku lay across from him, sound asleep in a tight and clean bedroll, snoring away as always. The hanyou smirked when Miroku mumbled something about ladies and leaned against the wall again, keeping his eyes open and watchful. With another sigh he stood and started pacing the room, not finding the sitting position satisfying enough for his restlessness. A click sounded in the hallway and Inuyasha’s attention snapped towards the door.

He slowly crept over, keeping his footsteps quiet and his strides wide. He reached the door and silently pushed it open, rounding the corner and pinning the intruder against the wall before covering their mouth with his hand.

“Mmmph!”

Inuyasha reached over to a nearby mantle and grabbed the candle before lighting the intruders face, who just so happened to not be an intruder at all. Kagome’s widened and horrified eyes stared straight back at him. They both realized who the other was and blushed profusely when Inuyasha slowly released his grasp. He put his hand behind his head, “I uh, thought you were…”

She glared at him, “I was just trying to go to the bathroom, and all of a sudden you come bursting out of your room and pin me against a wall,” she whispered.

“I heard a click and I thought it was an intruder, I can’t smell good with all these candles burning.”

She smiled and pushed her hair back, “I guess that makes sense, but next time make sure, ok?”

Inuyasha nodded and she quickly ran to the bathroom. The hanyou smirked and shook his head before quietly entering his room again, he turned to close the door, “So, how was it?”

Inuyasha turned around and there was Miroku, sitting cross legged with a perverted smirk on his face, “What the hell are you talking about monk?”

“Well, I did here a tussle out there in the hall, and you and Kagome frantically whispering to each other, did you remember to give her a goodnight kiss?”

“Shutup monk, it’s none of your business, even if we did do something I wouldn’t tell you.” He sat down against the wall and crossed his arms, giving a grumpy glare to Miroku.

Miroku put his hand over his heart and gasped, “But Inuyasha, I thought we were friends, surly you would divulge the information to me.”

“Nothing happened, go to sleep Miroku.”

Miroku shrugged and laid himself under the bedroll once more, trying to let sleep take his mind from the world.
