****last chapter…
Kagome’s gaze fell on a pair of bronze cat like eyes.
Her breath caught in the back of her throat, and her heart skipped a beat.
“Sesshoumaru…”
He was alive…but barely.
*
She took a frigid step towards Sesshoumaru, but froze as stiff as the tree trunk, the Demon Lord, leaned against.. Chills ran down her spine, and her hair stood on end. Her blood ran cold as he shifted uncomfortably. Though he was in a bad state, she was almost certain had he wanted to, he could bring her down in a split second with little to no effort. This was the horrifying truth that was Sesshoumaru.
The intense look in his eyes almost told the story, had she made a move he would perhaps not hesitate to take her life. She could see it now, her dangling from his firm grasp, begging for air, hoping that she would have the chance to go home to her family and change her life to what it should have been: Safe, away from all danger, in her own world. She could have gone home now, but what held her back she was not entirely sure. Only she knew that it was her own fault for not turning from the sight of the beast before her now. It would on her own accord had this been the end for her, but that was only a hum ringing in the back of her mind at this point.
What could she to do? This was the most feared demon, and yet she wanted nothing more at this point than to help him. He was after all in this bad sate because of her right? The question was how? What could she possibly do to help him at this point? If she dared offend him in any way she was sure to be on his hit list.
She took another step, but this time she called his name softly as she did, not sure as to how he would react. In a way it did not really matter, she was already on his bad side. She had done this to him, and she was sure that he already planed her death.
“Sesshoumaru…”
He only blinked, watching as she made her way to him slowly, his eyes never leaving hers. He was captivated by her bravery, though he would not let it be known.
It was her. Inuyasha’s woman. The very woman who had caused him this pain, and she was coming his way, with a deep look of concern written on her soft features. It was strange for him to think that she would dare walk in his path, and still have her life, for no human has with the exception of Rin.
Well she should be concerned, he thought. That woman had nearly purified me.
Yet he could not be angry. She had been the one needed to end the battle. With her sacred arrow, she was able to demolish Naraku… He had only wished she had waited till he was out of the path of the death kissed arrow first. Had he not been a strong demon he could have kissed his ass goodbye.
Now it would only take time to heal, but he could tell she was going to try to speed up the process. He could see it in her eyes…she wanted to help him, and he would of course deny her. Demons did not need help from humans to heal. In fact they heal faster with out their pesky medicine. Besides the medicine was horrible to the taste.
He said nothing as she kneeled by his side, their eyes still locked with each other, both unwilling to break their only contact.
Kagome’s hands fiddled with the seam of her old school uniform blouse. Her nerves were on the verge of breaking. He said nothing, and her heart crumbled with his silence. She wished he would speak, if nothing more than to just to berate her for her insolence. She would deal with that if it meant that this over baring silence would be broken. It made her go insane. It had been to long with out any word from anyone. Silence is all she had since the battle, and right now all she wanted was to hear some one’s voice, just to verify that she was not totally alone. Yet, still he remained quiet to her dismay.
Kagome’s lips quivered, as she tried to open her mouth to speak. She felt almost as if she were a child, not able to conjure the courage to ask her father for a cookie before dinner. Luckily Sesshoumaru spoke before she could even spit out what she intended to say, and she was not even sure what that was.
“I don’t need your help, you can leave.”
Kagome could not help the smile that graced her lips. It was not his words of course but just to hear his voice, so smooth and velvety, music to her ears. She must have confused him for his look was that of complete and utter shock.
“What is it you smile at, Woman?”
Kagome shook her head, and her smile grew. What could she say? That he was a comfort in the most unusual way? Pish posh, he would strike her down then and there.
“I see…Not the matter. Leave, I need not your service.”
Then it happened. His eyes left hers and Kagome could feel the sting of loneness pinch her hard. She swallowed down a few whimpers, and gazed at the grass she kneeled on. For a while she almost felt like she was sinking in to the green, and brown shades of ground, but when a hand reached out to hers she was brought back to reality.
She gazed into Brown eyes, and smiled. Rin had tears trailing down her flushed cheeks, and she was sniffling a few here and there. Agony was clear on her face. This was her caretaker dieing before her, most likely just like her parents had.
“Please help Lord Sesshoumaru…” She begged, pulling at Kagome’s sleeves, helplessly. “He does not mean what he says.”
Jaken arose from his spot on the ground and huffed.
“Rin, don’t be stupid. Sesshoumaru does not need a humans help.”
He crossed his arms and looked to Kagome with complete disgust, as if he had any room to judge.
“You should be on your way human…It is a wonder why Lord Sesshoumaru has not killed you yet.” He hissed waving his staff in her face as if she were a fly.
Kagome eyes flashed with a hint of anger, and she stood instantly. With a quick flick of her wrist, she had the toad’s staff in her grasp, and pinned him to the tree with it. Just who the hell did he think he was, Surly not invincible? What a foolish creature. She was not the demon lord himself, but she could beat this toad down any day.
“What was that you little disgusting toad?” Kagome spat, her grasp around the stick getting tighter with each venomous word that dripped from her lips coldly.
Jaken squealed, as he did his best to fight off the offending stick, but he was only left breathless. He was no match for Kagome.
“Lor-d Sess-houmaru...”
Jaken looked hopelessly to Sesshoumaru, his eyes begging for back up. His face twisted with pain, as his eyes began to water.
Sesshoumaru stood with silent grace. The wind blew around his form softly, swishing his snow white locks about his form aimlessly. He almost looked as if he were not injured at all. My how, he could move with out giving any indication of his pain. Such is the grace of a Demon War Lord.
He was quiet, as he made his way to Kagome, giving no indication of his objective. Chills took over her body. She had to strain to keep from quaking under his gaze. There was something about him gaining on her oooh so slowly that made her want to run, and hide from his view. Death mingled with Beauty was a sure mixture of fear, and this was for certain in this case.
Surly he would not want to help his servant out of his predicament. The slime ball deserved what was he receiving, and she was almost positive that Sesshoumaru did not mind watching Jaken’s treatment given to him in large doses.
Yet her eyes remained on him as he neared. He did after all come to his brother’s aid against Naraku. This left room in her mind to think that perhaps he would do the same for Jaken.
When he reached within touching range of Kagome he stopped, eyes fixed on her. There seemed to be a shimmer of emotion written in them…pain? No…not the least, but shock?
What a brave Human, he thought. Intriguing. Yet she seemed to forget she played with fire while in his presence. She might have stood up to Naraku in battle, but she also gave in when greave took hold. So perhaps she was not all she pretended to be, and for this she would be put in her place by a greater being.
“You will let him free, Woman.” His voice cooed with smooth sleekness.
Kagome’s heart speed at his demand. So he decided to help his retainer, and she was no fool. Kagome let Jaken fall, along with his staff to the cold forest floor.
A shadow of a smirk crossed Sesshoumaru’s lips at the women’s submission. Maybe she was not as daft as he had thought. She knew her place against him.
Jaken groaned, and stood quickly. He scurried to the other side of the camp, eyes glaring at the woman that dared to humiliate him in the presence of his Lord, and his human ward.
Rin huffed at the toad, and gave him a kick to the shin. “Jerk!” She cried.
“Hush, girl.” He bit out in anger. He would have struck Rin where she stood had it not been for his Lords great liking of the small child.
Sesshoumaru paid no attention to the bickering two. No, his sight was focused on the young human female. Her skin was bared in places that were indecent to his eyes, and her hair was ragged like a ravage dogs. She looked like shit. Blunt, yes but there was no sense in lying. She was the perfect image of what a woman should like after a great battle, and it was somewhat beautiful. There was doubt; she was a great warrior at heart, and that much was clear. The only thing that would cause a problem was her overwhelming heart. It consumed her at the climax of the battle, and caused her to lose her good sense, thus her aim was off and caused him a great deal of pain. Yes her heart was a problem. Sesshoumaru himself did not let such affairs as emotion sticky the situation of battle. He then dismissed her out of mind. She was a human, not a War Lord, as he himself was.
“I think it best you find comfort elsewhere, for you will not find it here. Perhaps family would do you best.”
Kagome’s heart shattered into a million pieces leaving an empty hole in its wake. He had shoved her to the side, and did not think a second time on the matter. He was uncaring, now. Not like he was at the battle. He had given her great advice, and now he did nothing more than push her away.
“Come Rin, Jaken we take our leave now.” He demanded.
Rin protested quickly. “But my Lord, you can’t. You are still hurt. Let Kagome help you, please.”
Sesshoumaru huffed, and regarded her wards statement with a cold demeanor.
“There is nothing that human girl could do for me. We take your leave Rin, not another word out of you.”
Jaken smirked and hurriedly put out the camp fire, with it the only light left to Kagome’s eyes.
Tears began to fall, as Kagome watched him retreat off into the forest with his comrades trailing right behind. She was so utterly alone, and it freighted her to no end. Had she had a gun at that point she would have perhaps not hesitated to use it to her own selfish advantage. She could care less now. She had nothing, not even the cold company of the only one she knew in this time that was left still alive.
She turned reluctantly, and set off to the only place she knew left. Yes she would go home, and never speak of her past. It was done with, destroyed.
However when she reached the well, a whole new string of problems would be awaiting her.
