Chapter 1

An unseen figure makes her way through a crowd of villagers. Her lilac hair flows behind her as she evades the on coming traffic. Graceful, soft, steps made by bare feet went unheard. An ethereal glow gleams off her moon–blue skin in the sunlight while she makes her way to a tree at the end of the village. She leaped to the nearest perch and closed her eyes. The sounds of children’s laughter caused her pointed ears to twitch. She smiled. Five children were playing below her tree. The branch she stood on moved slightly below her feet. She sighed still watching the children play.

“To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit, Serafina.”

Serafina crossed her arms. “Well, if you must know Shamira, I have a message from the realm.”

Shamira shot her head up. “A message?”

“Yes, a message. The Great One would like to ask for your services. He would like you to watch over someone while you are here.”

“That, Serafina, is not a message. That is more of a request.”

Serafina rolled her eyes. “You have a choice if you would like to do or not do this so-called request.”

“What gave him or you the idea to ask me to do this ‘request’?”

Serafina shrugged. “Will you do it or will you decline?”

A mother shouted out to the children. Every eye turned to the sound of the voice. The woman walked over to the huddle of children and bent over to speak. But what was said could not be heard by the two beings in the tree.

“Who would I be watching?” Shamira said, still gazing at the group underneath the tree.

“A girl. A Japanese teenage girl.”

Shamira’s eyebrow shot up. “A Japanese girl that the Ancient One would like to protect? Here?” She looked at Serafina.

She shrugged.

“But, as far as my knowledge goes, this island is still untouched.”

“He works in mysterious ways. Are you taking the job or not?”

Shamira looked at the group of children walking away, leaving one child with orange-brown hair by himself. Big tears left the child’s eyes and plopped on his tanned vest. Shamira frowned and floated down.

“Shamira, I need your answer,” Serafina shouted.

Shamira sighed, “I’ll do it.” She moved closer to the child and raised a curious brow. The child had a bushy tail that seemed to twitch with his sobs. She reached out.

“The girl’s name is Kagome Higurashi and that child you are trying to console will lead you to her.”

Shamira looked surprisingly at the child. “How long do I have to watch –“ Her words were only heard by the trees. She huffed. The little boy with the busy tail sniffed. “I guess I better get to work,” she mumbled. A breath of air escaped her body as she concentrated. The little boy visibly tensed up. She placed a warm gentle hand on top of the boy’s head. Green eyes connected with blue.

“Hello little one.”
