CHAPTER TWO
Kagome rested her head against his shoulder, and sighed.
“Kagome…” Inuyasha’s voice broke through the trance like atmosphere that enveloped them.
“Hmmmm…?”
“Are you happy here?”
She turned to look at him, she cocked her head to one side. “That’s a silly question, Inuyasha. I’m with you,
aren’t I?” She snuggled back into his embrace. His brow furrowed…she had said it so matter of factly like it
caught him off guard.
“But…”
“No.” She stated firmly.
“But…” He was cut off when Kagome’s hand covered his mouth. She stared into his eyes.
“Shhh… I miss my family, but I don’t regret being here with you.” She shrugged. “Now, this time is home.”
She stood, and brushed off her hakama. He looked up at her, and quickly stood to follow her as she started back
to camp. He quickly caught her hand in his, and tugged her back to him.
“Kagome…I can’t believe you don’t regret being stuck here. Even just a little. I mean…You’ve missed so much.
Your family, your friends, your school… any sort of normal life, really.” His head cocked to the side. “Don’t
you want a family of your own someday?”
Her breath caught in her throat, and she had to choke back a gasp. She couldn’t meet his gaze. “How can I tell
him I want that with him?” She squeezed her eyes shut. He tilted her head up to look in her eyes, but she
wouldn’t look at him.
“Look at me, Kagome.”
She shook her head and pulled away, nearly stumbling on a tree root. Inuyasha grabbed her upper arms, keeping
her from falling flat on her butt.
“Oi! It’s okay. ”
“Let me go, Inuyasha.”
His grip loosened. “Kagome? …What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Keh! You gave you portions to one of the village kids again, didn’t you?” He asked, accusingly.
She nodded, thankful for the change of subject. Inuyasha grumbled, and helped her to sit down on the ground.
“When was the last time you ate?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Kagome!”
She scowled at him, and crossed her arms over her chest. “What was I supposed to do? Let ‘em starve?” She began
to rise, her head began to swim and she fell back to the ground in a heap.
“Kagome?!” Inuyasha shook her shoulders. She was unresponsive, and as the seconds ticked by panic set in. Very
unInuyasha like, really.
“God, Kagome. What did you do to yourself?” He scooped her up in his arms, and ran back to the camp with a limp
Kagome in his arms.
“Inuyasha!” Sango yelled. “Stop it, pervert!” *SMACK*
Inuyasha lay Kagome on her bedroll, and pushed her black bangs back off her forehead. “Sango, get some water…we
have to cook some more rice.”
“What happened?” Miroku asked.
He shook his head. “The stubborn wench hasn’t eaten anything…”
“Since when?!” Sango broke in, sounding appalled.
“I don’t know.” He bit out. “Dummy.” He whispered, looking at the features on her peaceful face.
Shippou cautiously approached Kagome’s side. “Is she going to be alright, Inuyasha?” He asked with big eyes,
worry evident on his young face.
Anger flared in the back of Inuyasha’s mind. If anything happened to Kagome, their friends would be devastated!
And it would be demoralizing for the whole village…they needed her…he needed her.
“She’ll be fine.” He growled.
“Well, can I do anything to help?” he asked hopefully.
Inuyasha sighed. “As long as you don’t get in the way… I’m sure Miroku and Sango could use some help cooking up
the rest of our rice.” He motioned towards their two bickering companions. “Go on. See what you can do.”
“Okay.” He hurried over to Sango and Miroku. Inuyasha watched as Shippou ran for the woods; they had sent him
for fire wood.
He sat cross-legged, staring down at Kagome. Her eyes fluttered open, and he felt as if he could breath again;
as if a weight had been lifted from his chest.
“Kagome?” He helped her sit up.
“What happened?” She asked holding her head in her hands. “My head hurts.”
“You fainted.”
She looked up at him with a look of pure shock. “ I do NOT faint.” She said a bit loudly, and then winced.
He smirked.
Miroku, Sango, and Shippou (who returned with an armful of firewood, and subsequently dropped it) hurried over
when they realized Kagome was conscious again.
“Are you okay?” Sango asked.
“Kagome, love, that wasn’t very funny.” Miroku scolded.
“We’re cooking the rest of the rice…” Shippou informed her.
“But…”
“No ‘but’s’… you are eating and that is final.”
She sighed, began to rise only to be pushed back down. “You, stay here.” Inuyasha said with a look daring Kagome
to argue with him.
She rolled her eyes, snuggling back into her bag. Inuyasha nodded, and rose to go check on the rice…Miroku and
Shippou followed. Sango met Kagome’s gaze, and shook her head as if to say ‘Don’t ever do this again.’ Kagome
gave her a look of helplessness and shrugged. Sango rose, and went to fetch Kagome a bowl.
She lay there looking up at the stars. She placed her hands on her stomach, and she could feel it rumbling. She
was so, so hungry… she had barely eaten anything in a week, sharing most of her portions with the starving
villagers.
Inuyasha was doing his best to help provide meet, but there was a draught and the animals were suffering, too…
dying and spoiling before they could be eaten. The situation was dire… and it looked like it would get worse
before it would get better.
Inuyasha returned with a steaming bowl of rice, and she downed it greedily. He refilled her bowl twice before
she was full …but it wasn’t a proper meal, but it would have to do…it was all they had at the moment. If it
didn’t rain soon…they were, most assuredly, screwed…with a capital S.
They bid each other a good night, and settled down for the night. Inuyasha lingered by Kagome’s side.
“Don’t ever scare me like again. You have to keep your strength up. There are still demons out there…just
waiting for an opportunity like this…to pounce on the weak… just be careful, okay?”
She nodded. “I didn’t mean to worry you, or the others…I…”
Their gazes met, and he gave her a knowing smile…it was who she was…he kissed her forehead. "Get some rest." And
he disappeared into
the trees.
