Insight into the past
Kagome set in silence most of the way back finally Kaguya couldn’t take it anymore knowing something was up with her friend.
“Kags, we all know you like to zone out here and there but mind filling us in on what you’ve been thinking about this whole time?”
Turning her head toward her friends she stared blankly until the question finally sank in “Hm? Oh, it’s nothing really…my mind is just somewhere else at the moment.”
“It doesn’t have anything to do with a certain out law we just happen to leave does it?” Kagura couldn’t resist teasing her. Although Kagome's reply wasn’t quiet what anyone expected.
“And if it does?” She spat out before turning her attention back out to the road.
“Wow…someone has it baad…” Ayame received a nudge in the side thanks to Sangos elbow.
Smiling sweetly at the younger females sleeping forms; positive at this point they weren’t listening to anything she was about to say, she looked at her friends giving them a serious look. “Well what is it! You are starting to worry me here Kagome.” Sango rushed out.
“Well… before I came back to the cart Sesshoumaru stopped me and well…” She started fiddling with her fingers nervously.
“And?” Came five voices in union.
“He asked me to meet him tonight where we just were!” There she had said it; well more like blurted it out.
“HE WHAT!” Again with a sing songy reply as everyone who heard right yelled out a response.
“Well it’s not like you guys can’t come as well! You must have hit it off with the other males…so why not do something fun for once?” Kagome said wishfully.
“Uhm lets see if I can get this straight Kagome… You want us…” Sango paused as she pointed to the rest of their friends.
“To go with you tonight back down to the stream and meet up with a well known gang of out lawed murders whom by the way we just met?”
Not really seeing a problem with the situation Kagome smiled dumbly and nodded her head.
“Are you out of your ---“
Ayame piped in before Kikyo could finish her sentence “I’m sooo in! I think it will be fun!”
Kagome’s smile widened, she knew at least one of her friends would be on her side; now to convince the other ones this was actually worth doing. She couldn’t explain why she wanted to go but she felt drawn to the man she had just met earlier that day.
She felt ridiculous for even letting the word love come to mind but what else would it be called? Lust perhaps; she didn’t know, she wanted it to be something more… but only he could answer the question of what was to happen once the sun rose.
“What about the little ones Kagome? Are we just to leave them alone at your house! What if something happens?” Just like Kikyo being the mature mother figure of them all pointing out all of the dangers and things that could go wrong.
Kagome knew she needed to get out and have some fun; now more determined than ever to make the rest of the group go with her tonight. “Did you forget the boys will be there? You know as well as I that they can more than take care of them. They will be safe Kikyo, please just come with us an have a little fun for a change…”
Sighing in defeat Kikyo knew Souta and Kohaku could handle almost anything that posed a threat towards the young ones. Dare she go out to meet with these men she barely knew? The odd thing about the situation was how Kagome was handling it all.
Kagome never was one to trust new people especially men but here she was throwing caution to the wind wanting to run out in the middle of the night to meet with one. Perhaps she should trust Kagome this time; now that she thought about it she didn’t feel uneasy the entire time she was around them.
“Alright. Just this once Kagome and we are to take weapons just in case anything goes astray. If any one of us feel like something is amiss we are to leave with out question is that clear?”
“Of course! Thank you Kikyo.” Throwing her arms around her cousins neck Kagome nearly chocked her from how tightly she was squeezing.
Once arriving home everyone helped with unloading the cart and placing the now clean clothes some where safe so they wouldn’t get dirty yet again. Not hearing any yelling coming from the house usually meant her father was either still passed out, busy drinking in order to pass out or just not home. Which ever one it was really didn’t matter to her as long as he didn’t mess with her plans for tonight.
Walking into the kitchen she saw the boys sitting at the table playing a game of cards. “Took you guys long enough to get back! We’re starving!”
Giggling at the pair Kikyo ruffled Soutas hair. “Well what did you guys catch for us to cook?”
“There’s boar meat in the ice box, all you guys…err girls gotta do is cook it.” Kohaku said while point over to the ‘ice box’.
Kagome’s house was one of the few in the town limits who had electricity, but they hardly used it when it came to lighting. Not many people knew that they had the new technology and Kagome and her family wanted to keep it that way for the time being.
The females busied themselves with preparing dinner cutting carrots and potato’s; while a few others used what spices they had to flavor the meet. Kagome asked the boys to come outside with her to prepare the fire since no one wanted to heat the stove in the house seeing as it was hot enough in there as it was.
“It’s lit Kagome, need us to do anything else while we’re out here?” Kohaku asked as he threw a few more pieces of wood into the make shift fire.
“Uhm well actually… I was wondering if you guys could do me a huge favor.” Kagome gave them the biggest puppy eyes she could.
Sighing Souta looked boredly at his sister. “What is it?”
“Can you guys watch the little ones tonight? The girls and I have somewhere to go…” her voice kind of trailed off after that.
Grinning at each other the boys wiggled their eyebrows at her “And who are you going to meet Kagome?”
“Sessho… hey wait! Who said I was meeting anyone?”
“HA! You’re going to meet the Taisho gang guys aren’t you!”
“Shhh! Keep your voice down damnit! I swear you two have bigger mouths than girls! So will you do it or not!”
“Fine and you don’t have to repay us for it either; I've always wanted a real gun fighter for a brother in law!”
“Ugh, only my brother would say such a thing. Thanks guys, I owe you.” Kissing both of their foreheads Kagome walked into the house to let the others know the fire was hot enough to put the meat on.
The sounds of laughter didn’t go unheard by everyone in the house “So I take it you asked them?” Kaguya asked not bothering to take her eyes off the potatoes she was currently pealing.
“Yeah I did and they said yes so no one has an excuse to back out!”
Shortly after the females had left the males decided to try and catch dinner before taking a late bath. They had managed to hut down a few decent sized rabbits which would be good for a stew.
Being the first one done Sesshoumaru searched for fire wood. It would be dark soon and they would need light incase the women got lost on their way back and the matter of dinner still needed to be dealt with.
Setting up an iron pot holder over the fire Sesshoumaru pulled a stew pot out from one of their travel packs. ‘Might as well get this going since they are taking their sweet time.’ He was now grateful that he had told Inuyasha and that pervert to clean the rabbits before they were allowed to bathe.
Sighing to himself he shook his head at the thought of his little brother. Sure he gave him a hard time but even though he would never admit it he loved the little bastard. Truth be told neither of them started out as cold hearted killers. Even now they didn’t see themselves as such.
They had grown up on a large plantation a very privileged life. They had everything any one in this time could ever want or need. How ever their way of life was shattered when crooked law men came and accused their father of stealing and anything else they could think of.
Instead of putting him into jail and let him plead his case fairly; they hung him on his own land moments after they wrongfully accused him. They along with their mother were forced to watch as their fathers life was forced from his body.
Not being able to stop their mother from running toward her dying husband the crooked men shot her down without a
second thought. Smirking at the pain and now orphaned children the leader of the operation promised to be back in the morning for the land deeds and money.
That was his biggest mistake; leaving the Taisho brothers alone and alive. Knowing he would have to be the strength for both himself and little brother; Sesshoumaru pulled himself together – pushing down any emotion he felt at that moment.
They decided there was nothing left for them here; the place they had called home for so long. Placing their parents’ bodies into the back of one wagon; they loaded a second with what valuables, produce and any other goods they could fit.
After turning out the live stock the brothers set plantation afire; let the bastards come back to retrieve what they could, but there will be nothing left but ash and dirt.
The brothers buried their parents a few miles from the now burning sky, in a flower field they played in when they where younger. After the last stone was in place over the grave and they had said their prayers; the young males swore they would get revenge on the one who had done this to their family; Takemaru.
The next year of their live had been hard; they had to learn basic survival just to stay alive. But luckily the two soon had mastered gun shooting for hunting; or sneaking into someone’s barn in the middle of the night searching for food or shelter.
The following years went back quickly; their gang had also grown by several people. The first they had met with was Naraku. He was as cold hearted and one of the more morbid of the group.
After seeing his father beat and rape his mother Naraku tried his best to wrap and clean her wounds, but he couldn’t get the blood to stop. She soon died in his arms; setting out with only one thing on his mind; he soon found his father in town stumbling out of a bar. Pulling him into a dark ally he slit his throat just enough, so not to kill him, but to let him bleed out until he did so.
Hiten and Kouga were the next too join up with them; growing up in the same small town the two boys set out on their own to prove themselves. Sadly both lacked what it took when it came to actual fighting and soon found themselves being beaten by much older males.
This is how Sesshoumaru and the other two found them; out numbered; not really caring why they were being attacked – or perhaps feeling like a good fight; Inuyasha jumped in followed by his brother and Naraku.
Now owning then a debt, Hiten and Kouga said they would tag along until it had been paid off; but it soon turned into them never leaving.
Miroku was the last to join the group; at a young age his mother had found his father cheating on her yet again, in a state of blind rage she shot him, his lover then turned the gun on herself.
He was then taken in by his uncle who knew nothing about children, tried of supporting a man who had never done anything for him; Mirkou set out on his own, making a living for himself by stealing from others.
His biggest mistake of course was trying to steal goods from the group while they were bathing in a stream. After being noticed Miroku tried to flee; but was soon caught. Expecting to be struck down or beaten; much to his surprise he was offered a choice – join the group or well… die. He chose the latter of the two.
“Hey, we put the meat into the pot so watch it will ya? We’re goin to rinse off.” Hearing his brother’s voice brought Sesshoumaru out of his daze. Nodding slightly he turned his attention towards the boiling stew in front of him.
Noticing the lack of light Sesshoumaru shouted for the others to finish their tasks; it could be dark soon and if they wanted any rest before the women showed up; they would need to do so soon.
“We’re really going through with this aren’t we?” Kagome fought the urge to roll her eyes; Sango was becoming as worrisome as Kikyo was.
“From what I remember Sango… you were the one who said we had more than enough room to share down at the stream. Yes, we are going. Now get on the horse.” Glaring at her friend Sango mounted said horse while waiting for Kagura to get on behind her.
They had decided to double up on the horses so the chances of getting lost were minimized. The ride took a bit longer than expected; riding without light isn’t the easiest thing in the world; plus each female was lost in her own thoughts about what they were doing at the moment.
Kagome was beginning to wonder if she had gone the wrong way until she spotted the glow of a camp fire. Smiling to herself; she nudged the horse to speed up, leading the others toward the camp.
Glancing at his pocket watch once more, Inuyasha shook his head. “They ain't coming Sesshoumaru. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m getting some shut eye.”
Leaning back on the self made bed, the younger brother pulled his hat over his eyes before hearing the sounds of horses approaching. “Oh ye of little faith.” Miroku smirked at his friend.
“It’s about damn time ya wench!” Feeling her blood begin to boil Kagome started to stomp over towards Inuyasha.
“I was stopped earlier from teaching you a thing or two but not this time!” Pushing up the sleeves of her dress she almost made it, until she was jerked backwards into a hard chest.
Shivers were sent down her spine when hot breath blew across her ear “Save your energy, you might need it later.”
“Kags, we all know you like to zone out here and there but mind filling us in on what you’ve been thinking about this whole time?”
Turning her head toward her friends she stared blankly until the question finally sank in “Hm? Oh, it’s nothing really…my mind is just somewhere else at the moment.”
