The demon wakes up
Chapter II:
“Who are you? and where have you taken me?” he snarled at her with blood red eyes.
The girl jumped back in fright. Of course, he was a demon, she should have expected something like that. Well, demon or not, he was someone who needed her help. She tried to lower him back to the mattress by pushing gently on his shoulders and began to make a draught of poppy to reduce his pain.
“My name is Arena. I am very sorry to bring you here without your permission. I did not mean any offence. I found you in the forest, and you looked so terribly hurt. So I brought you here with the help of a donkey. I don’t mean you any harm, I just want to help you.”
“I don’t need help from a human!” the man narrowed his eyes suspiciously at her.
“Perhaps not, but I am not an ordinary human.” Arena said.
“I thought not.”
“What is your name?” Arena asked him.
“You do not know who I am? You must not be from around here. I am Sesshomaru, Lord of these Western lands.”
“Pleased to meet you Lord Sesshomaru.” she smiled at him.
Sesshomaru was confused. What? She did not cower at my name. That was very odd.
After a few moments of awkward silence, Arena approached him with his poppy. He looked at her strangely. “I need none of that” he said.
“Are you not in pain?”
“Pain is of little importance to someone such as myself.”
“Lord Sesshomaru, I may not know who you are but I can deduce that you are a great fighter based on your armor and your two swords. I will heal you, but you must promise me something.”
“Heal me? don’t fool yourself. I have no left arm. Not that I needed it anyway.”
“I’m sure there will come a time when you would very much like to have it. I can heal your arm, but you must promise to protect me for two or three days.”
“What?” he said “like I have nothing better to do with my time than watch over a human girl for three days.” But he looked at her with renewed interest. Could she be telling the truth? Could she actually replace his arm?
“I don’t think you understand Lord Sesshomaru, when I heal you it drains the entire lifeforce from my body. I will be completely helpless. And in return for healing you, I ask that you protect me during such time that I cannot defend myself” she looked at him gravely.
“I do not need your help, human….” he looked at his chalky white arm lying limply on the ground. This wasn’t right. He knew he could still be a great dog demon without it, but still, it was his arm! “….I will watch over you” he told her quietly.
Arena wasted no time and pulled another mat to the floor right beside Sesshomaru’s. He looked at her with a cocked eyebrow. She ignored his gaze. She placed a jug of water beside the mattress and a loaf of bread and various other bits of food. When that was complete she knelt down beside Sesshomaru and tore away the sleeve of his shirt. He gasped at the pain.
“My favourite shirt…?”
“Wishing you took that poppy now, hmm? What did you expect, that I could just clap my hands and the arm would attach itself?”
“I don’t know what I expected…”
“Just relax.” she ordered him.
As he narrowed his eyes at her Arena grasped the arm and held it up to Sesshomaru’s shoulder. She wrapped her hands around the arm and held it in place. She closed her eyes and whispered something he could not understand. There was a flash of bright light, Sesshomaru had to shield his eyes. When he opened them he lifted himself up with his two arms. He started. Wait, he used both arms. He looked down, his left arm was now completely fine. He felt better than ever! Sesshomaru marvelled at his new arm. It felt perfectly normal, the blood stained and ripped shirt looked oddly out of place. He stood up. Suddenly he remembered how it happened. He looked around for the girl, what was her name? He couldn’t remember. Ah, there she was. The girl was lying on the floor with her knees still under her, and she was breathing slow shallow breaths.
Sesshomaru was tempted to leave, but remembered his promise to her. He helped her fully onto her mattress and covered her with a blanket.
“I will return occasioanlly until you are well” he said to her. And without another word he swiftly and silently was out the door.
Arena drifted in and out of consciousness for three days. Sometimes she thought she saw a young girl refilling her water jug. Ocassionally she was worried that she had somehow ended up in the 7th circle of Hell as she saw a little green frog-like creature bustling nearby. She imagined he held a spear moving to stab the lustful as they ran nude through inferno. However, she was too weak to be frightened.
In those three days she never saw the one who called himself Lord Sesshomaru.
