The Perfect Christmas: Part 2
Hiei stood dumbfounded at her three little words. He didn’t know what to say…or what to feel…or how to react. Never before had anyone told him that they loved him, without it being from someone he detested or someone who was only playing with his mind.
His childhood and even adulthood life had been extremely lonely, and he kept to himself. Many despised him because of his elemental heritage, and many wished to kill him just to rid the world of his presence. He fought his whole life to keep it his own, suffering many trials and tribulations to get where he was today. He had the Jagan implanted to search for his only living relative, only to keep the secret from her for years before letting her know just who he was.
The lives he took and the screams from those he killed still lingered in his memory, and he didn’t expect anyone to understand just how much he suffered in the past. But the girl before him…she understood. All those years hunting down Naraku, and fighting demons with shards, and experiencing betrayal after betrayal because of love, and because of friendship, taught her to understand many things about human and demon nature alike. Her trusting heart led the way to her understanding, and she didn’t turn him away, even after having the smallest inkling of what he did and went through.
He stared at her as the small snowflakes drifted down, coating her hair. Before he could do anything, she looked over to the large tree that resided in her yard. He knew of its importance in her life, and watched as she tilted her head to the side, looking to the center of the large trunk.
One name drifted on the snow, but it wasn’t who he expected. “Hiei…”
He looked to her as she turned back to him, a smile on her face. “I will understand if you do not love me like I do you. I only ask one thing from you, although I don’t deserve it. I still want you to be my friend. Don’t leave my side, Hiei.” She said softly, her sapphire eyes glistening in the moonlight as moisture gathered beneath them.
He blinked once, his mind whirling a million miles a moment before he processed her words. She wanted nothing from him but for him to be near her. She wanted to be with him. Only him. He had never known someone to want him as she did. She wanted him, and that thought alone made him feel…needed. She needed to have him near. She would accept her one-sided love if she had to, but she couldn’t live without him by her side.
Holding in a smile, he looked into her eyes, leaning in and capturing her lips with his again. This time, he let himself indulge in the kiss, deepening it as he began to taste the sweetness that was completely Kagome. She began a small duel with his tongue, as a moan escaped her lips. She had dreamed of this moment, when he would finally kiss her with all the passion that she somehow knew he possessed.
After a few moments, they broke apart, each drawing in deep droughts of oxygen as their frozen breath mingled with each other in the freezing cold. Kagome rested her head against Hiei’s, and closed her eyes softly. She held onto him as if he was her very life, showing him once more that she needed him more than she needed air to breathe, or water to drink.
In about five minutes the cold finally got to Kagome and she shivered involuntarily, getting the fire apparitions attention. Shaking away the snow that had gathered on her head, she placed a hand around Hiei’s and led them back into the house.
She smiled at him before turning back to her work, hiding her heart again, but this time, she could accept the slight rejection, as he didn’t say anything to hurt her. He didn’t say he loved her, but she didn’t expect him to. He didn’t say he’d leave her either, and that was something she was afraid he might say.
The koorime went back into the living, catching some more of the movie, unaware of the glances that Sesshoumaru threw his way. He could smell Kagome very strongly on him, but knew that he hadn’t mated with her. He was going to have a talk with the demon, and now was as good a time as any.
“A word, Hiei.” He said. He respected the fire apparition, and he knew that there was attraction the last time he was in the vicinity of his sister and her friends. He just didn’t know how deep that attraction went. Somehow, he knew that his sister trusted Hiei more than she trusted anyone else, save for him, and that she hadn’t given anyone that level of trust since Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, Kirara, Shippou, and Kaede. Those from the past had her complete and uninfluenced trust, but since then, she had closed a part of herself off from them, a part only the Taiyoukai fully understood since he was also there in the past, as well as from the Kazoku bond.
The fire apparition nodded, and followed Sesshomaru upstairs to Kagome’s room. Only he and the taiyoukai had her permission to go in there when they wanted. The Taiyoukai took a seat on her bed, enjoying her sweet scent a moment before continuing in a soft voice, “What are your intentions for my sister?”
The question threw Hiei off guard, and his expression was one of shock and utter surprise, making Sesshoumaru confused. ‘Have I misread them both?’ he thought, before shaking off the doubt. He may have been older than most demons, but he knew attraction when he saw it, and he didn’t miss that look at dinner when Kagome touched the smaller demon with her energy.
He watched the emotions play out on the fire apparitions face, and refrained from asking his question again.
“She loves you. I know she hasn’t truly loved anyone since my late half-brother, Inuyasha.” He said softly, his baritone voice that at one time was so full of hate towards humans and demons alike now full of concern and reverie.
“Kagome…” Hiei paused. He didn’t know how to really continue. He began to get frustrated, and decided to open a link, and share their private moment with her brother. He seemed to understand that the fire apparition wasn’t very skilled with emotion, and the wave of emotion that came through the link during his sister’s and his exchange was reassuring to the Taiyoukai.
‘I knew it…’ he thought, smirking inwardly a moment before nodding and closing off the link. “So you love her as well. This Sesshoumaru wonders, however, how deep that love runs. Would you be willing to mate with her? To take her as your own for the rest of your days? I would not tolerate her getting hurt again because of love. She does not deserve it.” He said, his voice turning hard as a protective growl seeped out of his mouth.
Hiei knew that if he was to take the next step with her, that he would have to be 100% sure that he wanted this, and he wouldn’t tolerate any harm coming to her, even from himself. She had given him too much for him to hurt her.
“Think carefully, before you do anything else, Hiei. She would give her life for you, and you know that very few give the kind of loyalty and devotion she is willing to offer you.” Sesshoumaru advised, before getting to his feet and heading out the door, with that statement giving his blessing for the fire apparition to court, and/or mate, his sister.
The fire apparition was left alone with his thoughts, and he decided to sit upon her bed, taking in her scent, it alone working with it’s owner in mind, calming his mind and allowing him clearer thought as he leaned back and let his head rest upon her pillow. He held up the shining orb that his mother had cried for him and let the swirling ice blue reach his eyes, as it began to swing ever so slightly, almost in a hypnotizing cycle.
The jewel began to react to the demon’s thoughts, and began to glow, it’s magical properties coming to light as it began to reflect images of the past. Before he knew it, sleep overcame him, and that’s where Kagome found him hours later after everyone had gone home.
She watched as he slept, seeing the conflicted emotions on his face, she sighed, pushing his bangs away gently, before surrounding him with her calming aura. Instantly, his body relaxed, and he seemed to fall into a deeper sleep, with the conflicting elements in his body finally easing in her miko presence.
“So much pain…Hiei…how can you stand it?” she whispered out, her face taking on a tone of sadness as she kissed his forehead lovingly. She held onto his hand as she looked to her window where the snow was still falling.
Hiei’s eyes opened slightly as he heard her gentle voice asking him a question, one that he didn’t need to answer. He felt her silky lips on his forehead and forced down the urge to shudder with pleasure. She was so gentle with him, as if he was a priceless object that would shatter the moment she touched him.
The one thing that caught his attention the most, was the moonlight spilling in through her bedroom window. The beams of light hit her hair just perfect to give her the appearance of an angel, and that alone was a breathtaking sight. The expression on her face was one of soft reverence, and he couldn’t help but stare at her while she was lost in thought.
He didn’t want to scare her, so he gently squeezed her hand, feigning sleep a little while longer. When he sensed her heartbeat pick up speed, he held in a smile. He didn’t deserve a creature such as her, but he wasn’t about to complain. Somehow, fate decided to finally smile down upon him, and let him have a little happiness in his life.
Before Kagome could think on his reaction to her holding his hand, she was flipped over beside him, his nose snuggling into her neck as he took in her scent fully. He could practically taste the innocence intertwined in the sakura smell, and he couldn’t suppress the soft growl of pleasure that escaped from deep within his chest.
Confusion filled the young miko, but she didn’t resist him, instead, opting to snuggle closer to him, letting his demon aura surround her as he subconsciously staked a claim to her by lightly nicking her pale flesh with his teeth. She knew what the small gesture meant, and she couldn’t help but smile at it. He had claimed her. Not as his mate, but someone that he had his eye on, and because of it, no one else could even attempt to touch her without fighting Hiei for the claim.
She turned her head and their lips met gently before he pulled back and whispered, “I am…unsure…of what to do at this moment. But know this…I will never leave your side, no matter what we decide to do.”
She smiled and nodded, scooting closer to him. If anything, those words made her feel happier than she had felt in years, save for when she became Sesshoumaru’s sister. He was actually thinking before he acted, and she knew, that if the relationship progressed further, that it would be true and honest, and it wouldn’t be because she wanted it, but because he wanted it too.
They fell asleep in each others arms, enjoying the quiet companionship that they had found with one another, and waiting for whatever life would throw at them.
