CHAPTER ONE

Kagome stepped of the plane. Her body felt stiff from the long flight, and it was a relief to be on the ground again. She followed the rest of the passengers through the airport to customs. She presented her passport to the customs agent, and he gave her a small smile.

“Welcome to the United States, Miss Higurashi.”

“Thank you.” Kagome replied.

He handed her back her passport, and Kagome headed for the baggage claim. She had packed two suit cases of what she would need until the rest of her belongings arrived. After she retrieved her luggage, she headed for the airport exit.

Her roommate Sango would be waiting to pick her up. Over the summer the school provided housing information, along with email addresses, so roommates would be able to get acquainted with one another. Sango was 19, a year older than Kagome. She moved to the USA a year ago. She was also a ballet student. Sango began dancing when she was 4, and it was her dream ever since to be a ballerina. Sango also happened to be from Tokyo. She admitted to Kagome that she gets homesick sometimes, but there is always so much happening in New York that it is easy to get distracted.

Kagome looked for her name among the many, and she finally spotted a tall, graceful looking woman. Kagome could tell at once that she was a dancer. Beside her stood a tall, handsome looking gentleman.

“Kagome?”

“Sango?”

Sango pulled Kagome into a hug. “It is so nice to finally meet you! Welcome to the USA!”

“Thank you! It’s great to finally meet you, too! Thanks so much for picking me up.”

“Oh! No problem, Kagome.” She turned to the gentleman beside her, and took his hand. “This is my fiancé Miroku.”

Kagome extended her hand, and shook hands with Miroku.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you. Congratulations.”

“Thank you, and the pleasure is mine.”

Sango took one of Kagome’s bags, and Miroku took the other as they led her to the parking lot.

“So, when are you getting married?” Kagome asked.

“In the spring, after school.” Sango replied.

“Although, I think it would be more romantic if we eloped today.” Miroku smirked.

“Miroku, you know my mother would kill me.”

Miroku sighed, and they all laughed. When they reached downtown Manhattan, Kagome felt right at home with all the tall buildings. It wasn’t quite home, yet, but maybe…

Miroku parked the car. “OK, ladies here we are.”

“Where are we?” Kagome asked.

“We are about 15 minutes away from the school, of course that depends on the traffic.”

Sango unbuckled her belt, and got out of the car to help Miroku with Kagome’s luggage. Kagome followed Sango and Miroku up the steps of the apartment building. She offered to carry her bags, but they insisted. ‘They are so nice.’ Kagome thought. ‘How did I get so lucky?’

When they reached the apartment, Miroku spun Sango around and pulled her close to his body, kissing her deeply. His hands drifted from her waist to her butt, and he gently squeezed. He reluctantly pulled away.

“I know! How about we all go out to dinner tonight?”

“That sounds great!” Sango said excitedly. “Why don’t you invite Inuyasha?”

“Who’s Inuyasha?” Kagome asked.

“Miroku’s roommate, and best friend.”

“Will do chick-a-dee. See you at 7.” Miroku winked, and disappeared into the apartment next door to Sango’s.

“You guys live next to each other?”

Sango laughed. “Long story. Let’s get you settled in before we have to meet the boys.”

Kagome picked up her bag, and Sango carried the other one into the apartment. Kagome followed Sango to the unoccupied bedroom.

“And this, my dear, is your room.”

Kagome let her eyes roam over the room. The walls were white, and the carpet was gray. There was a closet to the right, and the bed was against the left wall. Kagome was surprised to see that the bed was already made up. What really caught her attention, though, was the large window she was facing. She dropped her bag and headed for the window. She kneeled on the window seat, and placed her forehead and palms against the glass.

“Wow.” She breathed. The sun was just setting over the city, and the neon lights glowed below. “I didn’t realize how high up we actually were.”

“Yeah…I pitty the window washers.” Sango smirked.

Sango heard a knock at the door. She placed Kagome’s bag on the bed, and went to answer the door.

“Knock, Knock.” Came an unfamiliar voice.

Kagome spun around and almost fell flat on her face. She was met by the most beautiful pair of amber eyes. She climbed off the window seat, and smiled shyly.

“I’m sorry if I startled you. I’m Inuyasha. Nice to meet you.” He extended his hand.

“No, that’s okay. I’m Kagome. Nice to meet you, too.” Kagome shook his hand.

“I just thought I’d come over and introduce myself before we left for dinner.

Kagome took a good look at Inuaysha. He had an unusual hair color, silver. He was wearing a navy blue suit, no tie, he was barefoot, and the top buttons of his shirt were open. Her eyes met his again, and he was smirking. Kagome blushed scarlet.

“I see you two have been introduced, ne?” Sango said, popping her head in the doorway.

They nodded.

“Well, let’s go! I’m starving!”

Inuyasha smiled at Kagome, and followed Sango out the room. Kagome’s mouth fell open. Inuyasha had waist-length hair pulled into a ponytail. She followed them out the apartment.
