Leaving Home
Chapter Two
The last of the boxes were placed inside the large moving trucks, the metal door was pulled shut. Kagome placed the lock on the handle, ensuring the safety of their meager belongings. Sango was placing a few things inside the cab as Kagome turned to look at her mother.
Sango shut the door and walked over to say goodbye as well. It had taken four months for this to happen. Months of indecision and trying to understand why everything had happened. Sango being there was a mistake, a fluke.
The last battle with Naraku had started out bad and ended even worse. He had suprised the group early one morning. The fight had lasted a long time, everytime they managed to hurt the hanyou he healed using the power of the complete jewel that was buried in his chest. Their only loss had been that of Miroku, dying to save Sango. Naraku had decided to go for the miko next. Sango had managed to jump in front of Kagome at the last second saving her. The tenacle still managed to pierce both women through the shoulder. Sango ended up taking most of the impact and fell on top of her. Kagome could remember looking up not being able to move from the girl's weight. Kikyou had shown up at the last minute getting close enough to make a grab for the jewel. With the last bit of her strength she purified the jewel and Naraku. A flash of bright light followed filled with a earpiercing scream. After the light dimmed Kagome made out an injured Inuyasha running to Kikyou, who was sporting a large hole in her chest. Then a bright light had appeared around her, blinding her. Both girl's had woken up in Kagome's era alone.
They soon decided that once the jewel had been destroyed Kagome's reason for being in the fuedal era was gone. With the last of it's power it had opened a portal beneath the girl sending her home. Fate would have it that Sango was on top of her at the time. She never complained about being here, she'd had nothing back in the past. Her husband to be had been killed along with her brother.
Kagome wasn't sure what happened to the others. Inuyasha had been wounded but would have survived it. Shippo and Kirara had been in the air away from danger so they would have lived through it. All they knew was that they were alone, with only each other.
Finally, her mom had suggested moving to a new place. Try to build a life somewhere else, leave the past behind. Being at the shrine was only making it worse for the both of them. Last week they'd found jobs not far from the address where they'd be staying. It was a night job at a local club that payed under the table. Kagome opened up a bank account to place the funds they would be earning. Sango said she didn't have a problem serving people but she wouldn't handle the money. All that would be left up to Kagome to handle. Which was fine considering with their lease paid up for a year they'd have time to save.
"Remember to call often and don't forget to visit," Mrs. Higurashi spoke to both girls. "Remember to stop by your uncle's house when you get into town. I've only met his wife once but she seemed really nice."
"We will mom. As soon as we get settled in we'll come get Souta for the weekend." Kagome hugged her mother then her brother. "You behave for mom now or Sango will have to get on your case."
"Yeah right, she's not as mean as you." He looked at the other girl, "Don't let her boss you around, she's good at that."
"Hey you little brat." Kagome saw her grandfather standing on the steps. "Going to tell us goodbye or stand there glaring?"
"I'm going to give you these wards thats what I'm going to do. That son of mine is evil, I want you girls to place these on your front door." He walked over and handed them to Sango. "Now off with you two, don't want to arrive after dark."
"Right," Kagome hugged the old man. "Take care Gramps, come visit us soon."
They climbed into the cab of the moving truck and buckled up. Kagome's car was being pulled behind them. "Let's hope I don't sideswipe anyone on the way there." She grimaced as she turned the key over, the loud engine echoing inside the cab.
As soon as the large truck pulled into the parking lot Sango got out wanting to kiss the ground. That had been scarier that facing down Naraku. An experience she would never do again, not in this life time. She couldn't count how many cars Kagome had almost ran off the road. Ten hours of holding onto that handle trying not to piss her pants. One guy had downed his window calling Kagome a bitch and told her if she didn't know how to drive, to park it. She responded by throwing her drink out the window, hitting the guy's windshield.
It was dark outside already, they were two hours behind schedule. Sango was just glad to still be alive and in one piece. She was tempted to go look at the grill, just to make sure there wasn't a corpse attached to the front. "You sure you have one of these liscense things?"
"Hey, I didn't do too bad for my first time." Kagome stomped her foot in mock anger.
"Yeah tell that to the poor bird you killed earlier. Poor thing never saw it coming." Sango could still see some of the blood on the windshield. "That's disgusting, I'm not cleaning it either."
"Come on, they probably think something bad happened to us." Kagome grabbed her arm after locking the truck up.
"Why? Have they seen you drive?"
