Chapter 1 – The First Day
The school bell rang echoing down the halls. Sess stood against the wall next to his locker watching the other students scurry to their classrooms. A group of girls past him giggling and he heard something like, “Oh my god he is even hotter than he was yesterday.” After a few more minutes of crowded hallways and too loud voices another bell rang to signal that anyone who wasn’t in class was late. The hallways were empty, save a few students running to get to class now that they were late.
Sess turned and opened his locker, pulled out his binder and a mechanical pencil and sat down on the floor under his top locker. He opened the binder to a blank page and began to draw. He drew faces; smiling, frowning, angered, crying, and screaming. He worked on angles and positions.
In the back of his mind he heard footsteps coming down the hallway, pausing, stepping a few more times, pausing, and stepping again before continuing to walk yet again. Sess look up to see a beautiful woman with raven black hair that looked as if it were made of silk it fell straight down her back stopping just above her jeans. Her eyes were wide and deep, the color of dark chocolate with a hint of honey. Her lips were full and luscious, the edges turned up in an always slight smile, and yet they still held a little pout to them. Her figure was one every girl wished for, she was the perfect balance; her waist was small only to flare out into wide hips with a flat stomach. Her chest was perfection. The soft mounds were just the right size for her body; they were high and well shaped. Her legs were long and slim. She looked to be just 5 and a half feet tall. She wasn’t wearing a school uniform, she was wearing a form-fitting light blue shirt and black loose-fitting low-rider jeans along with a pair of black boots with a two inch heal. She was also carrying a black with gold trim backpack meaning that she was a student. Sess took all this in within a few seconds. She was walking straight towards him.
She stopped right in front of him, the look on her face clearly said “I’m Lost”.
Sess stood up to his full height and stared down at the girl.
“New Student?”
She nodded.
“Lost?” He asked again, she nodded again.
“Schedule?” He asked, rolling his eyes while holding his hand out.
The girl pulled the slip of paper out of her pocket and handed it to him. Sess glanced at it and saw her first class was English with Lady Kikyo.
“Follow me.” He turned walked off, heading towards the stairs.
By Sess taking this girl to class that would mean that he too had to stay, as it was also his first class and Lady Kikyo wouldn’t let him leave again. Walking down the quiet hallways he could hear the girl walking a few steps behind him he could also feel her staring at the back of his head.
Rin was nervous, not because of the guy in front of her but because this was her first day back in school, in Japan. She had spent the last four years in America with her parents. Today was her first day back in Japan and she didn’t get the chance to settle in at all before Kameko dropped her off in the office and told her which subway train to take back to the house. It was scary. Yesterday was full of plains, airports, taxies, and extremely rude people that had short tempers, it was hard and tiring. She got to her foster home just before 10 pm and was fed and told to go to bed, that she had school tomorrow and she had better be ready. Kameko had already enrolled her and gotten some of her school supplies for her.
This morning she woke at 6, dressed and went to the kitchen only to find it empty, she fixed herself a bowl of cereal for breakfast and gathered her pens, pencils, and notebooks for school placing them in the backpack that she had brought with her. Kameko had then entered the kitchen and told her to get in the car. The drive had been completely silent. Kameko led Rin into the school and to the office, informed the principal that she was here and then told her how to get back to the house and left. Rin was then provided with a schedule and told to get going. She left the office having no clue where to go from there.
Rin walked down the hall looking at the scrap of paper they had given her and found that English was first, now she just had to find the class. Slipping the paper into her pocket she looked into a classroom only to see it empty and continued down the hall, found another hallway and looked down it. She had no clue where to go. She was just about to turn back to the office when she saw him. This guy was sitting on the floor by some lockers drawing in his binder; there was a hard look on his face. His hair was a beautiful silver, it was loose and falling down his back, he was wearing baggy black jeans and a black over shirt with crimson flames on it, and then there was a pelt fur hanging over and down his shoulder but instead of taking away from his fierce look, it enhanced it. He was a demon. There was no surprise in that; demons were ‘common’ enough, even if slightly rare in America. He was a gorgeous demon. And now this gorgeous demon was taking her to class.
He stopped at a door and looked at her handing her back her schedule, then opened the door and walked in. Rin followed. The class was full of curious eyes as they stared at her. Rin looked to the front of the classroom and saw the teacher standing there, the demon walked over to her and said, “New student.” And went and took a seat in the back, several female eyes following him. Rin walked up to the teacher and handed her her schedule. The teacher glanced at it and checked her roster.
“Welcome to English Rin, please take a seat,” she handed Rin back the slip of paper and Rin looked to the class. Everyone was wearing uniforms except for herself and her escort. Everyone was also watching her, all except the silver-haired demon. The seat next to him was empty and she made my way to it. The eyes all followed. It was completely silent; it didn’t even sound like anyone was breathing. Rin sat down and put her bag on the ground pulling out a notebook and pencil. The class had once again looked back up to Lady Kikyo. A couple of girls were leaning toward each other whispering on the other side of the room. Rin looked to her left, to her only friend, whom she didn’t even know his name. He glanced at her then back to the window.
This class was supposed to be an hour and a half long. It seemed longer. Each student had to stand and read aloud a passage in English from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Rin was one of the last to go as she was in the back. When her turn came she meekly bowed her head and sat still.
“It’s OK Rin, we can catch you up if you are lost.” Lady Kikyo spoke in Japanese thinking Rin didn’t know quite this much in English yet.
Moving on, Lady Kikyo looked over to the silver-haired demon. “Should I even ask you Sess? Are you planning to participate at all?”
He stood up and recited his chosen passage in a monotone voice, “’Arm'd, say you?’”
He sat back down and raised an eyebrow at Lady Kikyo.
She huffed a little and went on with class. She handed out a vocabulary sheet to see what everyone could remember, collecting it just before the end of class. She then glanced through all the sheets before saying: “Well we have two students who seem to understand the vocabulary without fault, the rest of you didn’t even get half of this right, you’ll need to work hard.”
A girl in the second row raised her hand and asked, “Lady Kikyo, is mine by chance one of those two?” This girl acted as though she was superior to everyone else in the class.
“No Kagura. You are not, in fact,” Lady Kikyo glanced down at a page in her stack, “I suggest you work extra hard this year if you want to pass.”
That was definitely not want Kagura wanted to hear. She huffed and puffed and narrowed her eyes to slits, as they turned pink. Her face also had an angry pink color to it.
The bell rang and the class was dismissed, everyone started to pack up their stuff to leave. Lady Kikyo walked over to the back row. “Sess, Rin, would you two kindly stay behind?” Rin nodded her head in confusion as Sess practically scowled at Lady Kikyo.
The rest of the class left and they stood in the front of the classroom waiting for whatever Lady Kikyo had to say.
“First I would like to congratulate the two of you on the perfect score you both received on the vocabulary. Next, Sess, I’m leaving Rin in your hands, show her where her classes are and the library and so on. Have a nice day.” With that Lady Kikyo walked over to her desk.
Out in the hallway Sess growled for Rin’s schedule and she handed it to him, he looked at it and then to her face and then turned to walk away. Leading the way she assumed. Rin started to follow, but the hallways were crowded with so many students it didn’t take her long to lose him even if he did stand half a foot taller than everyone else in the school and had a head of silver hair to top it off. She glanced around; she couldn’t see past anyone, her own height gave her no advantage since she was of the shorter population. She started to make her way through the groups of people standing around talking and laughing. She couldn’t even ask anyone where her class was; she didn’t even know what it was herself since Sess took her schedule with him.
Suddenly someone grabbed Rin’s ass. She didn’t even look she just turned and punched. The guy fell to the floor, the hallway around them went quiet. Rin looked down at the guy, it was a guy from her English class, she didn’t know his name.
Someone snickered; Rin looked up and saw a silver haired, golden eyed, student. It wasn’t Sess though. This boy had dog ears on his head.
“Serves you right Miroku. I’ve been waiting for that to happen with someone other than Sango.”
The boy was laughing at Miroku; he stepped over the fallen man who was rubbing his jaw gently.
“I am honored to make your acquaintance, for any woman who is as beautiful as you and can throw a punch like that is well worth befriending. I am Inuyasha, and what is your name?” He had bowed slightly as he introduced himself and he waited for her response.
Rin looked at him and then at Miroku, who had picked himself up off the floor, and back. Just at that moment someone grabbed her hand, she turned to look, it was Sess. He looked pissed too.
“Watch yourself mutt, and you,” his gaze went to Miroku “Hands off. Got that?”
Miroku nodded his head looking a little nervous.
“Oi! Don’t call me mutt, Fluffy.” Inuyasha snapped.
Rin glanced between the two males, they were brothers, there was just nothing else possible. Sess was glaring at Inuyasha and he started to growl, Rin squeezed his hand to try and calm him.
“I’ll deal with you later mutt.” Sess then walked back down the hall he came from, stilling holding Rin’s hand dragging her behind him.
The bell rang and Rin found herself in an art classroom. She was sitting at the farthest table in the corner on the corner of the table, with Sess on her right side and no one else at the table. The table could easily fit four people, 6 if they were close friends, and yet no one else was there, all the other tables were packed full too. Anywhere from three to five at each. ‘Sess’ it was that simple. He was kind of scary after all, but he had stood up to protect her, sort of, even if he was too late.
“I’m sending a sheet around, you don’t sign it, you’re not here.” The professor stated and started a paper around the room.
“Class, your fourth project is due that the end of this week, I require that it be the best work that I have seen from you yet. Away you go, I’ll be at my desk if anyone needs help.” That said the teacher walked up to Rin.
“I am Master Ryo. If you need help, or feel left behind in some way let me know and I’ll help as best I can. I will give you two weeks to start and complete your first project. Since you showed up late in the year I only require 3 projects from you but you may turn in as many as you’d like. Any questions?” Rin shook her head. “Very well.” Maser Ryo turned and walked to his desk and began to shuffle around papers, marking some.
Rin looked around; everyone had a sketchpad of some sort, everyone except her. She looked at Sess; he was busy with his faces again. She began tapping her fingers gently on the table thinking, ‘Well, until I get supplies that’s it’. Sess looked up at her for a moment before carefully ripping a page out of his book and setting it in front of her. Rin was startled for a moment before offering a soft smile.
She pulled out a pencil and began to draw. The lines on the page slowly took form. Soft lines and gentle curves began the drawing. You could see the figure and almost smell the sweat. The ballerina was caught in a stretch that you’d think would be painful, but the look on her face was only of concentration. Her left foot was on its toes while her right was stretched out on the balancing bar with her arms reaching for it. There was no one else on the floor, the curtains were a little torn, the windows half painted over, the wood floor scared, her slippers and leotard worn, but the dancer, she was perfect. Her hair was falling down around her face, her bun a little lopsided, her nails were perfectly even, her stretch done with care and ease. Rin signed the bottom of the page and dated it. She then looked over and caught Sess staring at the page with appreciation for her talent.
A smirk crept to her lips, and she looked up to the teacher’s desk and saw the cutting board. She got up and walked over to it and cut the slightly frayed edge off her paper. Then moved back to her table just as the bell rang. Sess packed up his paper and pencils. Rin set her picture in front of him. He looked up at her and raised an eyebrow. He picked the paper up and gently set it in the cover of his sketchbook.
Rin sighed soundlessly as she waited to be led to her next class. Sess took her hand before they stepped out of the classroom; most likely because he didn’t want to have to come back for her again. Rin followed him through the winding hallways towards the lunchroom. His hand was big, and warm. She looked at it, he had claws, they were thin but they looked sharp enough to cut steel if he wanted to.
Rin heard a group of girls gasp and glanced up, they were staring at her like she had sprouted a second head. She heard Sess growl low in his throat and he tugged her up a little closer to him.
“Don’t let them bother you.” He whispered.
Rin looked back to the girls to see them chattering at each other while their eyes were still focused on her. Rin looked questioningly at Sess when they had completely passed the girls.
In response he simply held their joined hands up to eye level.
Guilt swept across her and she tried to tug her hand away, she had probably just ruined his reputation or something. Sess didn’t let go. She looked down at their hands clasped together and realized just how gently he was handling her.
They reached the lunchroom, and Sess dragged Rin over to the grill. “What do you want?” Surprised, she looked up to the menu and saw that she could either have a burger or a hot dog.
She pointed to the burger. He got one and paid for it, handing it to her. She looked at him as he just walked off. Rin stopped at the condiment table and dressed her burger, once done she looked up to find Sess. He was at a vending machine she walked up to him just as he punched for a Pepsi. He grabbed the soda and took her free hand, leading her outside and into the grass. Rin sat down and Sess handed her the soda. She looked up at him. He just looked back at her so she began eating.
“Oh Sessy, there you are.” A feminine purr came from behind him. Rin saw him stiffen slightly. An arm came around his shoulder, rubbing the fur pelt; the arm continued around him till the woman came into sight. Kagura. A sudden surge of anger hit Rin.
“Do not call me that, and remove your hand from me, now.” He growled.
“Oh Sess, don’t be so mean, what will our new student here think of you?” Kagura slowly slid her hand down his arm to catch his hand in a light squeeze before letting go completely.
“Get lost.” The command was clear, yet all she did was laugh.
Rin stood, drawing Kagura’s attention. “Please allow me to introduce myself,” Kagura said in a sultry voice. “I’m Kagura Kugutsu.”
Rin just looked at her, not saying a word.
“How rude are you?” Kagura snapped. “Introduce yourself at once!”
“Kagura.” Sess said, it was a clear warning.
Rin watched as Kagura slowly calmed enough to turn to Sess and say, “Catch you later” and blow a kiss to him before walking off towards the same group of girls that had stared at her earlier.
“I think you have made an enemy.” Sess remarked.
Rin rolled her eyes and sat back down obviously unaffected by the tantrum. She finished her meal and stood up stretching her hands above her head. Sess followed the movement; once her hands were lowering he grabbed one and started walking towards the edge of the schoolyard. They reached a massive tree and without warning Sess released her hand and leapt into the branches.
Rin stopped and stared straight up into the tree with a look of confused interest on her face.
Peering down at Rin from within the tree Sess saw the look of interest. Rolling his eyes slightly he leaned down and stretched out his arm waiting for her to grab hold of his hand.
Rin reached out her own hand to grasp his, no sooner had she when she was lifted into the tree and seated across Sess’s lap. She gazed out across the schoolyard in shock and awe. She could see everything; the branches in the tree had grown to create a natural window. She turned to see Sess’s face only a few inches away from hers. She looked at him questioningly.
Sess sighed and in reply to her silent question answered, “I am not social, at lunch I come here.”
Looking across the schoolyard Rin saw the group of snooty girls along with Kagura talking and scowling. At another table sat Inuyasha, Miroku, and three girls. One of those girls had beautiful red hair that was pulled up into pigtails, Ayame. She was Rin’s best friend before she had left for America, Rin stared at the wolf demon a moment longer before continuing her scan of the grounds and noticed that there was probably one demon for every two humans. Wow. After living in America where demons were extremely few this was amazing to see.
Rin sighed silently and leaned back into Sess, staring lazily out at people watching them run to and fro, talking, giggling, flirting, and so on. Rin yawned and relaxed even more into Sess’s soothing half embrace as he wrapped one arm around her waist ready to strengthen at any moment should she lose her balance.
Sess leaned back against the familiar bark of the tree and looked down at Rin, she was fast attaching herself a position in his life; what that position was still remained to be seen. She was staring up at him with a smile tugging at her lips, was she amused? She looked almost wistful, and curious. Leaning down he grabbed her hand and lifted her up into the braches of the oak. Having already taken up the branch that was best for comfort he settled her across his lap. Her face turned to his, her lips were only a breath away, and her eyes questioned him.
“I am not social, at lunch I come here.” The look disappeared. She turned back to gazing out at the school and its students. Her hair was so soft, it looked like silk, it fell down in thick locks shining in the light that had seeped its way through the leaves. She yawned and as she did she leaned back and settled her self against his chest, his breath caught. Once he remembered to breathe he inhaled and the strong scent of her filled his lungs. All of her nervousness had left her and she smelled like wildflowers fresh after a spring rain, yet this wasn’t a spray or soap, this was her, only her. She smelled like heaven. Sess relaxed back into the tree as he felt her breath even out as sleep took her and she fell into a light doze.
What was it about this girl that didn’t speak that had so captured his attention? Sess asked himself.
The bell rang off in the distance but Rin didn’t seem to hear it, she was still dozing in Sess’s embrace. He gathered her into his arms and gently leapt from the tree, hitting the ground softly. Rin had snuggled closer into his chest but he could hear her waking. He gently released her legs and let them sink to the grass still holding her with an arm around her back. Rin’s eyes opened and Sess stared into them for a moment before settling her on her feet completely and dropping is arm to stop at the small of her back, just under her hair and gently urge her into walking.
‘I cannot allow myself to think of her as anything more than a sister, than someone to protect. I cannot.’ His hand gently stroked up and down that bit of exposed skin between her shirt and her jeans on her back. ‘I refuse to.’
Sess lead her to the gym and pointed her to the girl’s locker room. “The other girls should know where your uniform is.” He watched her walk off and a feeling of emptiness settled over him, like he had just lost something extremely dear to him. He ignored it and walked off towards the weight room, prepared to work off some tension for his last hour and a half of the school day.
Rin had awoken from her doze to find herself standing in the arms of the demon that had so thoroughly taken control of her hectic life and made sense and order out of at least this day. She had stared into his eyes wondering if maybe she could have a chance… ‘Chance for what?’ She didn’t know exactly what, all she knew what that she wanted it. Walking into the school Sess had brushed his fingers across the skin on her back; she wasn’t the only one who noticed either. There were a few students up and down the hall that were staring at them. Sess, the badass demon Sess, was showing interest in the new girl. The human girl. It was clear to those that saw them that Sess had made something of a claim on her and that no one else was allowed to go near her without his permission.
Sess had pointed Rin to the girl’s locker room and that is where she now stood. Girls were chattering everywhere in all stages of dressed and undressed. Rin looked around, and there talking with some other girls was Ayame. Rin weaved her way though the locker room to the girl, tapping her and her shoulder.
Ayame turned and a grin spread across her face. “I was wondering if you were ever going to come say hi.” Ayame dropped the clothing in her hands and the girls embraced in a tight hug, Rin smiling and Ayame giggling. The years hadn’t seemed to really affect the wolf demon. Her eyes were still bright green, full and laughter, her red hair had lengthened and gotten if possible even lovelier.
The girls broke apart. “Well, look at you. You look amazing. I almost didn’t recognize you; especially when I saw who you were hanging out with,” Ayame gave a sly grin and whispered so only Rin could hear, “in a tree.” Rin blushed slightly.
Rin changed the subject by pointing at Ayame’s uniform, but knew that the conversation wasn’t over yet.
“Yeah, I’ll go and get you one. But first Rin meet Kagome and Sango.” The girls all nodded to each other and Ayame walked off through a door Rin guessed to be either storage or an office. Rin turned to find two pairs of eyes watching her. Kagome had black hair and brown eyes, while Sango had brown hair and brown eyes; they were human.
Ayame walked back through the doorway a second later and handed Rin a gym uniform. Rin smiled and turned to go find a locker when Ayame spoke.
“Hey, you can share my locker, it’s not like I’m using all the space.” Ayame replied, tucking her shirt into her shorts.
Rin smiled again and she began to change into her uniform, and put her regular clothes into the locker. She glanced down at her legs. They were completely white and her shorts were painfully short. They didn’t even down to mid-thigh. ‘Well there’s nothing to do about it, at least it’s that short for the other girls too.’
Rin follow Ayame, Kagome and Sango out of the locker room and back out into the gym, there was a teacher standing there with a roster in hand.
“Everybody line up on the gym floor.” There were five lines, Rin was placed in the second row the second to last in line. Kagome was in behind of her, Ayame to the right of her, and Sango in the fourth line first person.
The teacher, Lady Noriko, started everyone out running two laps around the gym and then line back up to stretch out. Rin looked around while sitting on the floor stretching and holding her toes. There were some windows on one side of the gym and behind the glass stood a group of guys watching the girl’s class, they were in the weight room. Ignoring them she went back to stretching. Spreading her legs as far as she could and stretching to touch both arms to her left foot, the middle, then to the right, then the butterfly. Rin glanced back to the weight room; the guys were still just hanging out watching. Rin looked to the rest of the girls, they were almost all struggling with the stretches, only a handful looked to not be in some sort of pain.
Lady Noriko told the class that they were going to be doing stats again soon and to be ready, each one of the students had kept a record of just how flexible, how strong, and how much endurance they each had. But that today was just going to be fun. The class played dodge ball for half an hour, then basketball, and then the last half hour was whatever they wanted as long as we were working out.
At the last half hour of the day Ayame and Rin met up and told Lady Noriko that they would be in the wrestling room. Once there, Ayame immediately began to reacquaint herself with Rin. Ayame knew what had happened back in America, she and Rin had kept touch, so she knew what questions not to ask. The girls had met in a tumbling class when they were four and were friends from the start. Tumbling being the reason they were in the padded wrestling room.
The girls began to do back bends, then a few cartwheels, moving all the way into flips across the wrestling room each spotting the other. After 20 minutes they moved back out into the gym. The class was dismissed to get dressed and go to their next class before the bell rang. The girls went and changed and walked out into the hallway to wait for the bell to ring. Rin saw Sess walk out of a hallway a little ways down; his hair was wet and shining in the light. Rin watched at he spotted her and began to make his way to her, skirting around groups of people. Once Sess reached her he just stared at her as if waiting for something to happen. Rin turned and saw Ayame’s amused smile. Ayame handed Rin her phone number and the girls hugged before parting. Sess took Rin’s hand again and led her out of the school, both students had early release today, and into the parking lot. He walked up to a silver corvette, unlocked and opened the passenger door and stood there waiting for Rin to get in.
Rin didn’t know what to think, not only had he saved her from a nerve-racking experience today during school, but now he was going to prevent her from having a terrifying experience of trying to find her way back to Kameko’s house through the subway.
Rin moved towards Sess and the awaiting car, she stepped into the corvette and settled herself while Sess closed the door and went around to the driver’s side and got in. He started up the car and pulled out of the parking space driving to a parking lot exit he looked to Rin and waited.
Rin began to direct him as best she could from memory, relaxing when she saw subway exit that she would have used had she gotten on a train. After about a 10-minute drive Rin spotted the house and Sess dropped her off.
Rin smiled at Sess and squeezed his hand as Sess just raised an eyebrow.
Rin got out and closed the car door and was turning around when she heard. “See you tomorrow then Rin.” Rin smiled to herself as Sess sped off down the street. ‘Well time to go settle in.’ Rin thought to herself.
Climbing the stairs leading into the house Rin looked around and notice a very nice black durango in the driveway. Ignoring it as just a guest she opened the door to the house and removed her shoes.
Kameko, Rin’s foster mother, came around a corner just as Rin was about to go to her room. “Rin, your Guardian is here to get you, go and collect your things.” She made a little shooing motion with her arms and turned back into the living room. Rin stood still for a moment as the full impact of what Kameko had said hit her. She had a Guardian? Who? Rin went and gathered her still packed belongings and placed them by the door and walked into the living room.
Conversation stopped and Kameko stood up, “Rin, may I introduce you to your Guardian, Inutashio Tensaiga.”
