The Invitation

Chapter One

The day was cloudy, most of the sun was hidden from view. Rain was threatening to soak those walking along the busy sidewalks of town. It was only a little after noon, the day only half over for most. The black haired girl continued to walk, lost in thought. Unaware of those around her. Her long hair blew in the breeze, tears streamed down her angelic face. One man collided with her, she bumped into the stone siding. The rude man kept walking not caring of the pain he caused the young lady.

Kagome felt the pain radiating down her arm but kept walking. Why couldn't she stop crying? 'It's been over six months but it still hurts so much.' Her thoughts went back to Inuyasha and the friends she left behind. Her only salvation was knowing that Naraku had been destroyed. The final battle had been fierce and terrifying to them all. All the enemies the evil hanyou had made came together to bring him down. The minute Kikyo had asked Kagome for the final shard of the jewel held in her possession, she'd known the end was near. Once the jewel was made whole Kikyo meant to purify it along with Naraku.

Kagome handed the shard over, anything to see Naraku destroyed for good. Everything happened so fast it was like a blur. In the end the dead miko had managed to purify the jewel after it was made whole. Thankfully, Kagome was there long enough to see that all of her friends had made it out alive. Inuyasha had a huge hole in his side, Sesshoumaru had a few cuts along his chest, Kouga had gashes in his legs and Miroku had a bump on his head. Other than a few bruises everyone else was fine. A minute after she watched him die, her body began to feel weird.

She tried to walk over to the hanyou that held her heart. She could no longer move or speak. 'Inuyasha.' No one was looking at her, all eyes were on the empty spot where Naraku had recently stood. Shippo was the first to notice her. "Kagome." He ran over to her, trying to jump in her arms. The kit went through her and landed harshly on the ground. Everyone turned at his scream, they watched him pass through her.

"Kagome!" Inuyasha ran over to stand in front of her. "Don't leave me." She didn't want to leave but it didn't look like she had a choice. Her world went black as she heard him calling her name in panic. She woke up back in her era, alone. Going through the well was no longer possible.

Kagome felt the first drop of rain land on her cheek and ran inside a small cafe. There was only a few people inside the small building. She took a seat deciding to get a cup of coffee while waiting for the rain to slack up enough to go home. A waitress came over to take her order. The older lady must of had her hair net on too tight, the smile she carried was anything but friendly. "Coffee please."

The unpleasant lady walked off leaving Kagome alone to think. After returning she decided not to finish school, she'd missed so much it would take a lot of work to graduate. Studying wasn't something she felt like doing right now. Part of her was hoping Inuyasha would find her in this era. As the weeks went by she came to the conclusion he hadn't lived this long. Despair filled her, she'd give anything to see him one more time. She hoped whatever happened he was happy.

A young girl that looked to be the same age as Kagome came inside. She looked around the cafe, looking for someone obviously. The girl had long pink hair piled high on her head in an odd fashion. Looked like tiny balls placed all over, odd. She appeared to be a little shorter than Kagome.

The girl turned to see Kagome sitting in the corner and smiled. She skipped over and flopped down on the seat across the table. Kagome stared at her, "Um hello."

"Hey," she replied in a chipper voice. "I'm glad I found you before you took off. It would have sucked to chase you down in the rain."

"Do I know you?" Surely, the miko wouldn't have forgotten someone with that kind of hair.

"Course not silly. Not yet anyways. Name is Taree," She extended her hand.

"Kagome," The hands met. "Mind if I ask what you want?"

"Oh, yeah sorry. I was in a shop down the street looking at some vases and I felt you. Don't even get me started on some of the vases I saw. It's hard to believe that some people try to sell crap. After all a vase is suppose to bring out the beauty of the flowers. Some of the things I saw in there screamed 'Break Me.' Anyway, so there I was right; looking, really thinking about accidently dropping one vase in particular when I felt a surge of power." She clapped her hands together, like a child that just found out it was christmas eve. "I followed it and here I am."

Kagome wondered if she could order some Ritalin for the girl. "Okay, that doesn't explain why you came?"

"Ooops, you're right. Sorry I tend to sidetrack sometimes."

"You don't say." Kagome tried not to laugh at her. Maybe she should have been a blonde.

"Well, see I just wanted to come ask what temple you came from. I didn't know there was one around here. Don't get me wrong, I've only been here twice before. The drive isn't really long but I hate leaving home."

"I live at the Higurashi shrine not a temple." Kagome answered. "Why?"

"Cause you're a miko. I just wanted to ask about your temple but if there isn't one here then I guess I wasted my time. Phooey, I thought for sure there would be one, as strong as you are I figured you'd had training somewhere."

Kagome wasn't sure if she should feel complimented or laugh. Her strong, yeah right. "Are you one also?"

"Kind of, though not near as powerful as you it would seem. I have my other talents so its okay. My uncle owns a small temple, so thats where I train. If you are interested, I can give you the number. Maybe come by and check it out sometime. It's actually kind of a shelter for kids with problems."

"Thanks, I might do that. I'm not sure when I'll be able to, I really need to find a job soon, since I dropped out of school." Kagome took the paper with the number scribbled sloppily.

"No shit! Well we can't offer you a job but if you want to come visit my uncle might work something out with you. There's another girl staying with us. Free room and board but you have to help around the place and with the kids that stop by. Think about it, I better get going. Was nice meeting you Kagome."

"You too." Kagome watched the girl leave. She was a strange one. The waitress came back over to top her coffee off. The number stared back at her. A sigh escaped her lips, what to do. Her heart demanded that she sit in her room all day and pine over Inuyasha. Her mind told her to find something to preoccupy herself with. Her taste buds told her to stop drinking the coffee. She got up paid for her drink and walked outside.

There was only a slight drizzle now, light enough to walk home in. On the way she contemplated her options, her plans for the future. Did she even have a future? She had been dreaming of a future with Inuyasha for so long. Fate had thrown a bucket of ice water waking her up real fast. Maybe she should discuss things with her mother, maybe she had some good advice.

At dinner that night Kagome brought up her meeting with the strange girl. At first her mother was worried over someone suddenly approaching her daughter. After discussing the situation and Mrs. H. calling the number to make sure it was legit; Kagome made plans to go. The man on the phone explained how it was more of a center for runaways and kids with problems. They were also looking for help at the moment.

Kagome started to see it as a chance to help kids less fortunate than herself. It would help get her mind off the past. Something to do until she figured out what she wanted with life. So the arrangements were made for her to be picked up by Mr. Sinato, the owner and councelor. Kagome made sure her mom promised to call her if she heard anything from Inuyasha.

Two days later found Kagome unpacked and moved into her small room at the Sinato temple. Her newest journey was about to begin.
