Chapter 2
As promised, Inuyasha did not wake Kagome as early as usual. In fact, the whole camp was still asleep when he decided to go to the little lake near their camp, and fish for their breakfast. It was a beautiful lake. It had a small waterfall, and a hot spring was set back in the rocks.
Inuyasha stood waiste deep in the water lost in his thoughts of the previous night. “I don’t want her to leave. But how can I ask her to stay here, with me, when we both know I have an obligation to Kikyo…damnit!” He took a couple of swipes at the fish that ventured near the shore. His claws just missed the fish, and he pounded his fist in the water. He sighed. He looked up at the bright blue sky. “I...just never imagined I’d…fall in love with her…”
He froze at that thought. He ALWAYS kept those thoughts pushed way back into a corner of his mind. But he could no longer deny he had feelings for his companion from the future. Until now, he had always figured he was intrigued, infatuated, because of her resemblance to Kikyo, or the fact that she was interesting because she was from the future, and she was, by nature, a good-hearted person.
Recently, however, Inuyasha had been plagued by dreams. Dreams that would make Miroku blush. And those dreams, of course, centered on Kagome. He knew that it wasn’t just lust…he wanted, needed to have a deeper connection with Kagome. After all they’d been through …he genuinely cared for her…even when he had to eat dirt because of the subduing spell. He also knew she had feelings for him…hell, she had almost said as much when she agreed to stay with him even after the “Kikyo incident.”
His thoughts were abruptly interrupted when he heard footsteps approaching behind him. He knew it was Kagome; he could never mistake, or forget her smell…
Inuyasha turned around facing Kagome. She stopped, and her breath caught when she met his eyes. She smiled, and walked closer to the lake and sat on the bank, next to the fish Inuyasha caught for their breakfast. Inuyasha smirked, and walked over to sit next to Kagome.
Kagome stiffened momentarily, and then relaxed. She brought her legs up to her chest, and wrapped her arms around her knees. “ ‘morning.”
“ ‘morning.” He grunted.
“Thanks for letting me sleep in…I think we all needed a bit of rest. I think we’ve been pushing ourselves…” She looked at Inuyasha.
He stared back into her eyes. Their faces came closer and closer, but they quickly broke apart when they were distracted when they heard Sango’s voice calling them from camp.
“Coming!” She yelled. Kagome shook her head. “Sorry…” She breathed, and quickly stood, brushing off her green skirt. She started to move, but a clawed hand grabbed her wrist and she looked down at Inuyasha. He looked at her a minute, trying to decide what he wanted to say. He dropped her hand, and looked away.
“I’m sorry…I’ve really been pushing you guys lately.”
Kagome bent down, and picked up the fish. Inuyasha turned his head slightly, and he could see her thigh where her skirt rode up her legs.
“It’s OK Inuyasha, let’s just go cook the fish. We gotta make up some time, right?” She asked. Inuyasha could hear the hurt in her voice, and he flinched. He rose and followed her back to camp.
After they ate, they packed up camp and headed back towards Kaede’s village. “Their home.” Inuyasha thought. The thought of having a home after spending fifty years pinned to a tree never failed to amuse Inuyasha, and he smirked. Things were very quiet as they walked on towards the village. Too quiet. The rest of the group was growing tired of their friends silence.
“Oi! Inuyasha! Kagome!” Sango shouted. Kilala landed in front of them, carrying Sango, Miroku, and Shippou. “We are gonna go ahead to the village. We DO NOT want to see you two until you have resolved your differences…we are tired of the tension between the two of you!” And without another word, Kilala bounded off into the air.
Inuyasha and Kagome just stood there, dumbfounded. Then they looked at each other.
“Ummm…any idea what that was about?” Inuyasha asked.
Kagome just sighed, and started walking. Inuyasha thought he heard something that sounded suspiciously like, “men,” leave Kagome’s mouth. He grabbed her arm.
“Oi! I asked you something, Kagome.”
She looked down at her arm, and then back up at Inuyasha. Immediately he dropped her arm…he recognized that “look.” It said: “Let go of me, NOW, or I will ‘sit’ you into next week.” She began walking again.
“Kagome?”
She stopped, turning, running straight into Inuyasha. She would have fallen if he hadn’t caught her. She met his eyes. He noticed her eyes were glistening with tears.
“What?” She sighed.
“Why ARE you avoiding me?”
“ME…avoiding YOU? You got some nerve buddy…” She continued walking, and again he grabbed her arm. “SIT!...Uggggghhh! I wish you’d stop doing that.”
“What was that for, bitch?!”
She slapped him in the face so fast he never saw it coming. He looked shocked, and brought his hand to his cheek. She turned her back on him. He turned her around, and saw she really was crying now. She met his eyes.
“I…I can’t…b…believe…y...you’d call me that…” She sniffled. “Don’t you like me at all?”
He pulled her into an embrace. “What did I tell you yesterday? Didn’t I tell you, I cared about you…that you’re my best friend!”
Kagome looked down. Inuyasha noticed her cheeks were flushed, and visions from his dream came flooding back to his memory and he immediately felt himself harden. He bit his cheek to keep from moaning.
“Is that all I’ll ever be to you? A friend?” She asked so softly Inuyasha almost couldn’t hear it.
He sighed. “What do you want from me…Kagome?” His hands gripping her arms fell to his sides.
She closed her eyes, willing herself to stop crying. She shook her head. “I don’t know, Inuyasha.” Kagome was angry with herself because she WAS avoiding the issue, and Inuyasha…
Her eyes flew open when she felt arms slide around her waist, and a warm mouth covering her own. Their eyes met, and he pulled back. Kagome looked at him in shock.
“Is that what you wanted?” He asked, his voice husky.
She gasped, and took off in the direction of the village…and the well…
