Just So You Know...
* Okay people, here’s the deal: I’m sorry for any confusion, but this fic really was meant to be a oneshot and only a oneshot. Sorry to any disappointed any readers out there. I’m also extremely sorry if any of you thought that this was a new chapter. Once again, SORRY!!!!! But before you start hating me listen to this: I have a new story in the making! Yes, a new story that I am in the process of writing will soon (hopefully) grace the archives of AFF. So don’t hate me just yet for not continuing Racing the Moon. That’s good news right? Well I have better news! I’m going to give you a preview of the new story and let you know that the inspiration for it was the song Gone Away by The Offspring. So if you want to get a feel for the mood of the story, check out the song. I totally love that band. One of my all-time favorites. Anyway, enough rambling for one author note, don’t ya think? So don’t hate me and don’t give up hope for another chapter to Racing the Moon. I’ve decided that if enough people ask, I may get off my lazy ass and do it. The only unfortunate news is this: don’t expect the new story to be done very soon. Besides being my lazy self, I’m also prone to periods of writer’s block. But don’t fear I will finish this one. So, on to the preview!
(As of now this is untitled. I welcome any suggestions.)
I couldn’t believe it. She was gone.
She was gone and she was never coming back, couldn’t come back. Even if she had wanted to. And there was nothing I could do about it. Not this time.
We had managed to defeat Naraku. She had defeated him. In the end he had come to possess all jewel shards except for the three we still had and the two in Kouga’s legs. At the end of it all, we had come together. Even Sesshomaru.
Everyone had been on his trail for a little over a month. Just before we reached the spot where I sensed Naraku was hiding we met up with Kouga and his tribe. After another one of those stupid fights (not to mention a couple of sits) it was decided that Kouga, Ginta, and Hakkaku would join us. If only I’d known then what I know now. Instead I was a total jerk during our last few days together. But really wasn’t it the last few years? I’m so stupid. I pushed away the thing that was most important to me, then lost it right after I realized just how important it was. How important she was. Too late now.
Kouga gave up his shards the day before we reached Naraku. It was the same day we met up with Sesshomaru. Of course at first it was business as usual. You know, the whole “I’ll kill you” “No, I’ll kill you” bit. But it was only half-hearted. Over the years we had learned not to hate each other so much. We also knew that now we were behind the same cause. Of course he didn’t travel the rest of the way with us, but I knew he’d be there at the final battle. Though I’d never admit it to anyone, I was kind of glad for that deep down.
And he was there. All of us were. Me, Kagome, Miroku, Sango, Shippo, Kilala, Kouga, Ginta, Hakkaku, Sesshomaru, Jaken, Au-un, and Rin. It felt very final as we faced him and all his incarnations. I think we all felt it was the last fight; even Naraku. The battle went on for hours. Shippo and Rin became our makeshift doctors. Kagome had given them both some rudimentary instruction and Shippo already knew almost as much as she did. Au-un protected them and the rest of us fought.
Jaken proved to be a big help the poison insects and that let Miroku use his wind tunnel. Kouga faced Kagura. For him it was personal. I was busy with Muso and Kagome with Kanna. Sango, Ginta, Hakkaku, and Kilala dealt with the lesser demons while Miroku ran clean-up. Sesshomaru fought with Kohaku. We warned him only to defend himself and not to kill the kid. We all knew he was still furious over the incident with Rin even if it hadn’t been his choice to attack her. We didn’t know if he’d be able to, but somehow he kept his temper. Naraku, the bastard, stood back and watched it all. He never was one to fight his own battles.
Eventually everyone was exhausted. I was even getting tired. Of course the last person I expected to see showed up. Kikyo. At the time I didn’t realize what I know now. That I automatically worried about Kagome wasn’t just a reflex as I told myself then. It was because I cared about her more. Because I loved her.
Seeing her distracted me a bit. On the surface I told myself it was because I was glad to see her. But I knew she sensed this was the final battle too and she had come to take me to Hell. I realized then that I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to leave Kagome.
Suddenly Kikyo fired an arrow at Naraku. It was the beginning of the end. We all began to fight harder. The masses of lesser demons abated and Sango, Kilala, Miroku, Ginta, and Hakkaku helped subdue Kohaku. Kouga and Kagome defeated Kagura and Kanna around the same time. Sesshomaru lent a hand with Muso. We all turned to Naraku. Jaken obliterated the last wave of poison insects. He didn’t send anymore.
Out of nowhere a tentacle shot out and snatched the shard from Kohaku’s back. He came back to himself for a moment before he died in Sango’s arms. When his head lolled back and his eyes closed she laid him gently down and kissed his forehead before she furiously rose. We could all see the tracks on her face made by her tears. Sudddenly she flug the Hiraikotsu with as much strength as she could muster. Fueled by her fury, it flew faster and more deadly than any of us had ever seen. Even Sesshomaru’s eyes gave a flickered widening before becoming stoic once more.
A blow that powerful would easily have killed any full-blooded demon not to mention a vile half-breed scum like Naraku. But, because of the Shikon Jewel, he regenerated easily enough. When the Hiraikotsu came back Sango caught it with ease then readied for another attack. We all took our fighting stances on her cue. It was then that the final showdown really began.
* Yay! It wasn’t very much, but it was a nice little taste. And don’t worry about it never getting done. Despite the laziness I do want to finish this one. And just so you know, it won’t get posted until it is complete. It drives me nuts when I read a story and I’m really starting to like it and the author never finishes. I hate it! So I will not let you suffer the same frustration. Anyway, tell me what you think and I send a special thanks to all my wonderful reviewers. You guys rock! Also feel free to email me if you like (MidnightsKeeper@aol.com). Just last night I had someone send me an IM. I don’t mind this either. Do recommend any good stories too. I have one to recommend that’s actually a poem. It’s on animespiral.com and is called It’s All About the Ears by Wheezambu. Look it up. Bye for now everybody!

***OOps!!! I just realized that poem is on this site too. Same names. Enjoy!
