Chapter One
Kagome was sitting at the table with her three friends located in the back of the library. She was now in her last year of high school suprisingly. A little over two years ago her journey through time had come to an end. Sesshomaru, Kouga, and even Kikyo had been there for the final battle. On their way to Naraku's castle Kikyo had stopped the group to discuss how to defeat the evil hanyou. Inuyasha had believed he would be able to do the feat with his sword alone but Kikyo argued that the only way to truly destroy him would be to destroy his heart then use the jewel to purify his soul. Thus, eliminating not only Naraku but the jewel from this world. Within an hour all the pieces were collected in one place, the majority in Naraku's clutches. Kohaku willingly gave his shard to the dead priestess his only thoughts of killing the one that had ruined his life. Kouga had been a different story, during the battle he lost his to Naraku. Kikyo had asked Kagome to trust her with her remaining shard so she had. Once Naraku had all but the two shards in Kikyo's hands. As Inuyasha struck the blow that would destroy his heart, Kikyo threw her two at the evil hanyou who immediately consumed them completing the jewel. As his body lay dying, the woman made of dirt and bones used all her remaining power to purify Naraku's soul. In a flash of light he and the jewel no longer remained. Her limp body (not sure if you'd call it a body its made of clay after all) fell to the soft earth in a heap. Inuyasha automatically ran to his first love paying no mind to her reincarnation.
"Kikyo, hang in there. There's got to be a way to save you." Tears slid down his cheeks as he held her close.
"My time here is done as I have set out what I needed to do. Inuyasha, I no longer wish for you to accompany me to hell." She reached up to stroke his cheek. Pain etched in every feature she continued. "I love you as she loves you. We were not meant to be it would seem." She glanced over at the girl she couldn't hate. "Protect her always." With that her body made of bones and dirt disappeared back into the ground from which it came.
Everyone watched not sure what to say as he began to grieve. Kagome heard what she had said. Kikyo had given her and Inuyasha her blessing. She brought her hand to wipe the tear that was slowly making its way down her cheek. "Ohhh," placing her hand before her eyes she noticed it was almost transparent. It was spreading rapidly up her arms and legs. Panick filled her heart as she called out. "Inu... yasha."
He turned when he heard the panick in her voice. "Kagome," he ran to grab a hold of her but ran through her instead. She was slowly disappearing before his eyes. Sango and Miroku ran to the girl they had come to love and consider family.
"She is returning to where she belongs," this came from Sesshomaru.
"Shut your fucking mouth, she belongs here with me." Inuyasha made one last desperate attempt to reach for her. He could see her mouth moving as if trying to speak but no words were heard. Within seconds she too was gone.
Kagome had woken up hours later laying inside the well house. Everything came rushing back to her, she'd been transported back to her own time for some reason. She immediately jumped over the lip of the well. When she hit bottom nothing happened confirming that with the jewel gone she was stuck in her time. She was stuck here and Inuyasha was stuck back in Feudal Japan.
Over two years had passed since that day. Kagome put herself back in her studies trying to graduate from school. Not a day didn't go by that she didn't think of him wondering what had become of the man that still had her heart. Today she found herself with her friends whom never heard the saying, "Silence was Golden." They scoped out every guy that walked past and those that didn't. Kagome didn't care much enough to bother, there was only one guy she wanted to see walk by. They'd came to the local university to do some research for their final history report. The high school library had been sorely lacking in good research material so this had seemed like the next best place. Plus, it gave her friends an excuse to scope out the college guys. Kagome had naturally decided hers was going to be on the Feudal period. In truth she was hoping there would be something in one of the many text books that could tell her what had happened to her friends. Not likely, but it was the only hope she had. Obviously, Inuyasha hadn't lived to make it to this time. Any clue would help soothe her broken heart.
"I'm going to do some looking around see if I can find a book." She stood up noticing her friends didn't pay her much attention as they were currently scoping out some guy standing at counter. The history section was located near the front and thats where she headed. It was nearing closing time and on a friday evening so not many people were left inside. Only thirty minutes left for her to find something suitable to atleast make a report out of. Her fingers scanned the spines, most had the dates of coverage listed near the bottom of the spine. She found the one she was searching for and removed it. Her fingers flipped through the pages and a sigh escaped her lips. It would do for a simple report but it made no mention of the demons of that time. Being there herself she knew they actually existed. So why weren't they in any of the history books? A voice broke through her thoughts.
"That book is okay if you just looking to do homework. It's not the one you want if you are interested in actual history." She turned to see a girl not much older than herself standing not to far from her. Her hair was a light brown, with blonde streaks ending at her waist. Green eyes turned to meet hers, the girl was rather pretty. She was a few inches taller than Kagome, her steps were light and graceful. Kagome took in her outfit, she was on the college cheer-leading team it would seem. Explaining the well toned legs and arms.
"Actually, its a little of both. I was looking for something in particular but I don't think I'll find it here." Kagome put the book back upon the shelf.
"So, are you looking for something to stimulate the mind or the same boring shit our teachers preach in class?"
"What I'm looking for I'll probably have to go to the fictional side." A laugh escaped her lips. Kagome should have known she wouldn't find anything here.
"Ahh, I think I know what you are looking for. Interested in demons are we? You wanna see what all those closed mind professors have left out." The girl saw Kagome's look of astonishment, "Don't let the outfit fool you hun. I happen to have a 4.0 and I'm looking to be the top of my class. The name is Raelene by the way." She extended her hand.
Kagome took her hand, "My name is Kagome and yes I'm interested in the stories about demons. Do you know where I can find them?"
"Not here, but tell you what if you really are interested I can show you some books. You won't be able to use them for your report though. Start talking about mythalogical creatures and its an automatic "F". My dad works at the museum, he's formally an archeologist. You wouldn't begin to imagine the books he's collected over the years. But if you really are interested here's my number give me a call tomorrow morning and we can hook up." She scribbled her number down on a sheet of paper. "I got to head out theres a game tonight."
Kagome waved to the girl as she headed out the door. The number was already burning a hole in her hand. Excitement soared through her body at the possibity of finding some information on the man she'd been forced to leave behind. Her friends were calling for her and she made her way back.
Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny. Kagome woke up and stretched lazily in her bed not wanting to get up. Then she remembered the evening before at the university library. She rolled over and looked at her alarm clock, it was only a little after eight a.m.. Would she be up already? Deciding to head downstairs and have breakfast real quick before calling she jumped out of bed. On the way down the stairs she heard Souto already in the living room playing his new video game. Her mom met her in the kitchen already preparing eggs and toast. "Morning mom."
"Morning dear. You look chipper this morning. Do you have any plans?"
"Actually I may be leaving in a bit. I met this girl from the college yesterday and she offered to help me with my history report." Kagome didn't want to tell her mom everything. Her mom thought it best if she put the past in the past. Seeing her daughter grieve for months caused her to worry whenever Kagome brought up her old friends.
"Thats wonderful. Do you know what time you will be home?"
"I'm not sure. I'll call if I'm going to be late, okay." She quickly ate her breakfast. Impatience was nipping at her heels as she ran back up to her room. Pulling the number out of her night stand she dialed and waited for someone to answer.
"Hello." A elderly man answered the phone.
"Hello, may I speak to Raelene." Kagome heard the phone being put down and waited for a few minutes before she picked up.
"Ello," came the muffled reply.
"Hi, this is Kagome from the library yesterday. I hope I didn't call too early." Kagome waited and heard a loud yawn cross the wires.
"Nah, its okay. Had a long night and my ass is killing me. A little advice, if you ever see a drunk frat boy walking around with a wet towel. RUN." Kagome's laughter ran across the phone. "Here's my address. Come anytime you like, I'll be in the kitchen getting rid of this hangover."
After hanging up the phone Kagome quickly got dressed and informed her mom she was leaving. A cab was the fastest way across town. Twenty minutes later she was at the address she'd written down. It was in the nicer part of town or as her friend's called it the richie part of town. She ran up the long walk leading to the front door. Before she could ring the buzzer the door flew open.
Raelene stood in the door smiling down at her. "Good, I was wondering what was taking so long. Come in, we can head to the study. Hope you don't mind about the phone call. I was a little out of it. Someone thought it was funny to spike the punch last night. I'm not much for holding my sake."
"No problem. Wow this is a beautiful house." Kagome took in her surroundings as she was lead through a wide hallway. Off to the right was a long stair case. To her left was what she assumed was the kitchen. Located behind the stair case was two double doors leading to the study, their destination.
"It's too big, but dad wanted someplace with a big study for all his things. He's a pack rat not wanting to throw anything he finds away." Kagome followed her inside the double doors and gasped when she saw all the books. Most seemed to be very old, there was all kinds of ancient weapons lining the walls."Oh, and call me Rae."
