Chapter 2: Scorn

Kouga leapt, his foot connecting with Inu Yasha’s face. The half-demon staggered back from the force of the blow, lost his footing and fell hard on his side. “Damn, do you ever wash those stinking feet of yours, Wolf?”

“You’re one to talk, Mutt. You’re so attached to your fleas you name them.” Kouga pounced. Inu Yasha rolled onto his back and reflexively lifted his leg using Kouga’s downward momentum to flip him.

The wolf demon landed roughly on his back but quickly rolled over and jumped to his feet. He charged Inu Yasha tackling his rival. Both canine demons fell to the ground and rolled across the meadow scratching and biting each other.

Kouga laughed triumphantly as he pinned Inu Yasha. “You lose, Puppy.” As Kouga raised his fist to punch Inu Yasha, the dog-demon’s freed hand grabbed Kouga’s ponytail and yanked, hard. The wolf prince snarled as his neck snapped back and his head was held in place by Inu Yasha’s unrelenting grip on Kouga’s hair.

Tightening his grip on Inu Yasha’s trapped wrist, Kouga growled. “Figures a weakling like you would fight like a girl.” Using his free hand, Kouga grasped his ponytail trying to tug it free from Inu Yasha’s clenched fist.

Inu Yasha bared his teeth. “At least I don’t dress like one. Your skirt is shorter than Kagome’s.”

Snarling in rage Kouga yelled, “My kilt is a traditional Ookami warrior’s outfit, you ignorant dog!”

Kouga and Inu Yasha continued snapping and growling at each other. Both knew they had reached a stalemate yet neither proud male was willing to accept a draw. Stubbornly, they remained trapped in their uncomfortable positions.

Bubbling laughter snapped the two males out of their anger. Their grips slackened as Kouga and Inu Yasha stared in hurt surprise at Kagome. The love of their lives sat far across the meadow chatting and giggling with Hakkaku and Ginta.

Slowly, Kouga and Inu Yasha released each other and stood. They walked in a stunned stupor toward the oblivious trio. Both growled when they saw Kagome lift a pair of chopsticks to feed Ginta then Hakkaku some sushi.

“What is with that wench?” Appalled, Inu Yasha wondered, “Does she have a thing for wolves?”

“Just wait until I get those two traitors back to the den!” Kouga grinned maliciously as he envisioned exactly how he would punish Hakkaku and Ginta.

Kagome was enjoying herself immensely. “Who knew Hakkaku and Ginta were so charming?” Although Kagome wasn’t able to completely ignore the fight between Inu Yasha and Kouga, the gentle attention Hakkaku and Ginta lavished upon her helped soothe her temper.

She stopped petting the brown wolf in her lap when she saw Hakkaku and Ginta become tense. Her spine stiffened in anger when she heard the low growls behind her. Ignoring Kouga and Inu Yasha, Kagome calmly poured herself some tea. She smiled sweetly and said, “Hakkaku, Ginta. Would you like some more dessert? I have plenty and there isn’t anyone else to share with.”

Hakkaku and Ginta’s eyes grew wide with fear as they continued to gaze past Kagome’s shoulder. Inu Yasha had a feral gleam is his golden eyes as he tightly gripped Tetsaiga and Kouga stood with his arms crossed as his piercing blue gaze coolly rooted the terrified wolf demons to their spots.

Hakkaku kept loudly gulping, as Ginta stammered, “No thanks, Sis. Couldn’t eat another bite.”

Finally gaining control over his voice, Hakkaku stuttered, “We should probably get going anyway. Things to do at the den.”

They quickly jumped to their feet prepared to run for their lives. Before they could dash away, Kagome said, “Please stay. It’s so nice to talk to people who actually listen to me for a change.”

“Kagome, what the Hell is…”

“Shut it, Mutt. Let my woman fini…”

Interrupting the two alphas Kagome said, “I can’t tell you how refreshing it is not to be judged and constantly compared to an old love or commanded to become someone’s mate.”

Without acknowledging either Kouga or Inu Yasha, Kagome stood and gently kissed Hakkaku and Ginta on their blushing cheeks. “You two are perfect gentlemen. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon.”

Kagome walked past Inu Yasha and Kouga pointedly ignoring them as she headed toward Edo. Hearing angry growls and frightened whimpers, Kagome glanced over her shoulder to see Inu Yasha and Kouga advancing toward Hakkaku and Ginta.

“Sit.”

Kagome smiled in satisfaction as she watched Inu Yasha crash to the ground pinning Kouga beneath him.
