Chapter 2

**Last Chapter**

Opening her eyes once more, she looked up to the blue sky above her and began to climb up the well wall. Just as she reached out for the well's rim, a magenta-striped, clawed hand firmly took hold of her own. Looking up from the pale hand surrounding hers, Kagome gasped as Sesshomaru looked down at her and"¦smiled. "˜Breathe, Kagome, breathe. Oh God"¦'

**On With the Story**

Kagome attempted to pry her eyes from the barrage of gold that bore into her, and at the same time swallow the grapefruit that had seemed to lodge itself in her throat. The smile disappeared as quickly as it came; leaving only the emotionless mask he usually wore. A charged silence hung in the air while the demon's hand lay clasped around her own. She was the first to blink...her first mistake. Upon opening her eyes once more, she was now pressed up against Sesshomaru, his one arm around her waist to give her support. Gasping in surprise, Kagome blushed a tomato-red and dropped her bag. The prince looked down over his nose, amusement dancing in his sunset eyes. Before Kagome could open her mouth to protest this new turn of events, he promptly removed his arm stepped back from her. Shrugging off the feeling of emptiness now that his warmth was gone, Kagome picked up her bag once more.

"Thank you for picking me out of the well"¦" The ground had suddenly become very interesting. His gaze on her never wavered and it was becoming unnerving. Raising her eyes once more, she offered a smile.

"You're welcome"¦Ka-go-me." Her shocked expression brought a tug of a smirk to his lips. Sesshomaru had to test the sound of her name on his tongue. Usually miko, wench, ningen, onna, or bitch sufficed, yet something about the girl commanded something more. "I was on my way to the village to see that baka, half-brother of mine when I caught your scent. Why were you in that well?" This wasn't the first time he had spotted her in the old well, yet no explanation of her strange attraction to this place. Kagome stepped back and away from him as he came to the well's edge and gazed down. "Explain your fascination with this old well. You always disappear into it. Does it take you someplace new?" Sesshomaru tore his curious gaze from the darkened pit and searched the girl's face for answers. A frown now marred his beautiful features; he did not enjoy being confused on such matters. Kagome was still suffering from shock from when he used her name. Licking her parched lips, she struggled to find an easy way to explain herself.

"The well serves as a"¦umm"¦portal between your time and my own." Catching his interested gaze, she continued while pacing. "I'm from 500 years in the future and was brought through the well when I was attacked by a demon. The Shikon no Tama, or parts of , (Kagome scratched the back of her head in embarrassment at this.) allows me to travel between the two." A relieved sigh escaped her lips when she saw him nod in acknowledgement. A sudden flash of heat left a sense of light-headedness upon her. "˜Strange"¦' Thoughts began to fly through Kagome's mind more rapidly than before. She sniffed at the air as the wind changed directions; her annoyingly high-strung senses were driving her crazy. In between the smell and noise of the village and Sesshomaru's own intoxicating haze, Kagome was sure she was close to passing out. Shaking her head free of the cloud that was quickly forming, Kagome's eyes darted back to the ice prince in front of her. His own startled gaze met hers, the gold swirled, darkened, and brightened with the setting sun. "˜Nani?'

Sesshomaru's eyes had widened considerably and pale lips opened in a small gasp. With frightening speed he was inches from her face, staring into her eyes with heart-stopping intensity. Kagome jumped considerably when a pale, magenta-stripped hand came up to trace her face. The first instinct to swat the hand away burned to ashes as the sensations stimulated by the velvet claws reached her spine, a fresh blush creeping to her porcelain skin. Attempts to escape were useless since the miko soon found her back against a tree; only closing the already confining space between the lord and her. Panic, embarrassment, and curiosity left her frozen where she stood. A sudden breeze crept into the clearing, sweeping Sesshomaru's knee-length hair into a curtain of silver around the both of them. The sun's rusty glare caught the silver, silk strands as they fluttered against Kagome's skin. Almost as if she were under a trance, she reached out and trapped a lock of the almost-white mane between her slim fingers. A deep, purr-like growl rose from the demon's chest. The noise itself wasn't threatening in nature but sensual and caressing. Kagome's body answered with a purr of its own, surprising her as well as the angelic being in front of her. The miko unknowingly leaned into the hand that now traced her ear and jaw, her eyes drifted shut.

Black, leather boots left shallow prints on the emerald grass as he inched closer to her, his hand never leaving her face. Amber eyes drank in her features, noting her skin had paled another shade and the blue tint to her black hair began to change to a burgundy. She never ceased to amaze him. Time and time again she showed courage loyalty beyond her race and sex, yet she had found no one stand at her side; he could sympathize for he had found no one as well. Women were a distraction that he couldn't afford with his position. 'If I did even entertain the thought of taking a mate, she would have to a hell of a lot more than just bare pups and look pleasing.' The frown returned to his face. 'She would have to be strong, beautiful, smart...' The frowned deeped when an unpleasant pressure on his chest made its presence. '...and a demon.' Sadness flickered in the jeweled eyes of the Lord of the Western Lands. If he mated with a human his lands would be put into unimaginable turmoil from the other three lords. His father's folly had cost his kin dearly, so a similar path taken by his son would be inconcivable. 'This Sesshomaru fears no one!' A quiet sigh slipped through his parted lips; even Kagome's unstable senses couldn't have picked it up. The demon found that he wasn't angry, just lost. A quiet dispair began to fill him as a single thought began to repeat over and over again in his mind. 'I'll never find another like her...' The wind had changed again, this time it was Sesshomaru's turn to sniff the air.

The scent of Kagome filled his senses, almost making him jump back from the girl. 'Something in her has changed...' A smirk melted the usually cool facial features of the Dog Demon. 'So strange...' Sesshomaru dropped his head to the area between the girl's neck and shoulder, deeply inhaling her scent. Confusion wasn't even in the same ballpark as to what the Western Lord was feeling. A new and strange spicy scent had wrapped itself around the girl and it made the demon dizzy. "˜Why has her scent changed so rapidly? And why have her eyes changed? Such a strange creature to be around. Alluring"¦' The panicked, wine-colored eyes of Kagome stared up at him as he raised his head and met her gaze once more. In the glow of the fading, summer sun, the couple suddenly became aware of how close their faces lingered to each other's yet neither one made to move away. Kagome's breath hitched in her throat as Sesshomaru's lips grazed the outside of her ear.

"Sess"¦" The ability to speak vanished from her. It was certain"¦Kagome expected her heart to burst from her chest any moment and implode on itself. The Inuyoukai's hand fell to cup the back of her head, his long fingers tangled themselves in her reborn, ebony hair.

"I don't understand why I feel this way,"¦" His breath tickled her ear, sending a wave of electricity through her body as his nose traveled along her jaw line. The terrible fire began to stir again, yet the pain had dulled and now roared with a new, strange feeling. "But there is something about you that this Sesshomaru cannot ignore." He backed away, only enough so that she could make eye contact with him. "And to ignore is not something I intend to do"¦"

The sky turned to fire as the sunset reached its end, sending shattered stars into night's welcoming embrace. Something new and frightening had charged to life in Sesshomaru's eyes, and something as equally beautiful and terrifying had sparked in eyes of the girl pinned between the tree and him. No one else existed: Inuyasha, Kikyo, or any other being that drew breath. The heartbeat of the very earth seemed to halt as the Demon Lord closed the distance between them. For once Kagome forgot of others and gave in, closing her eyes and leaned into the strong embrace"¦
