An Unexpected Gesture

A/N: Okay, before anyone’s panties get in a twist, I’m not trying to portray Kagome as being some airhead or anything. I just really like to see the fun and quirky side of her. I mean, they’re best friends! And best friends are supposed to try and get you out of your bad moods. Sango is so serious in this chapter, there needed to be someone to balance her. Kagome’s just the girl for the job! I hope you all like it!

As always, reviews are encouraged, welcomed, and appreciated.

Chapter 2: An Unexpected Gesture

The phone was taunting her.

She’d been staring at it for the better part of an hour. It just sat there on the corner of her desk, less than an arms length away, glaring at her with it’s black plastic frame and glowing green buttons. A red light flashed in the lower right hand corner, showing that she had a voice mail message. She reached for it, grasping the receiver off the cradle. Pausing, she slowly set it back down and withdrew her hand. She tapped her fingers on her mahogany desk impatiently.

*This is stupid,* she thought. *This whole idea is just…ludicrous! I should just call him and tell him I’ve changed my mind. I mean, no one is going to believe that he and I are engaged! I’ll just call the whole thing off. I don’t care what anyone thinks anyway. And I defiantly don’t care what that jerk Naraku thinks. So he thinks I’m a cold fish, so what? …And he thinks I’m self-centered, and boring, and… OOH! That bastard! I’ll show him! Wait. What am I saying? I can’t, I just can’t. This is just…stupid!*

Kagome walked into her boss’ office to find her biting her lip and glaring at the phone. She stared quizzically at her. It was only 10 a.m. and her boss had already taken her tan sport coat off and unbuttoned the first two buttons on her cream colored blouse. Her reading glasses lay abandoned on a stack of papers and she clenched her fists tightly as she rested them on the desk, leaning on her arms.

Kagome rolled her eyes. *Well, at least she hasn’t put her hair up yet.* The secretary frowned and sat on the edge of the desk. “You know, smashing it with a baseball bat would be a lot more practical.”

Sago blinked at her. “Huh?”

She sighed. “You look like you’re trying to use your ‘laser beam eyes’ to fry the phone. If you hate it that much I can put in an order for a new one.”

“I’m sorry, Kagome.” Sango leaned back in her chair and messaged her temples. “I just have a lot on my mind right now.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“No. I definitely don’t want to talk about it.”

“Well, whatever it is,” the raven haired girl said, setting the folded blue sheet on her desk, “don’t think too hard on it. This just came for you.”

Sango unfolded the paper and glared. “Motion to suppress the confession in the Miller case. Great. This is just what I didn’t need today.”

“Well, I know what will cheer you up.”

She eyed the woman critically. Kagome was her best friend and the best secretary she’d ever had, but she could also be very sneaky. She was the one, after all, who had suggested she hire someone from a male escort service to take to the reunion, having gotten the number from ‘a friend of a friend’. She wasn’t sure if she was up for any more of Kagome’s ‘surprises’.

“What?” she asked cautiously.

Kagome hopped off the desk and headed for the door. “A package came for you a minute ago.”

“A package?” She watched Kagome disappear out the door to her desk. “How is a package going to-” She stared wide-eyed at the dozen white roses in a crystal vase she returned with. Kagome set them on the desk with a flourish and stood back to admire the look on Sango’s face.

Sango rose from her desk and fingered the delicate petals. The sweet smell from the roses permeated the office. She grabbed the card sticking out from the middle and read it.

“If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden.”

“Wow,” Kagome said peaking over her shoulder.

“It’s Claudia Ghandi. Or, at least, it’s attributed to her.” Sango sat the card down and again touched the soft petals. “They’re so…beautiful.”

“Who do you think sent them?”

Sango shook her head. “I have no idea.”

The phone started ringing, jolting both women out of their daze. Kagome gracefully sidestepped her boss and answered it. “Sango Taijiya’s office. …May I ask who’s calling?” She cupped her hand over the mouthpiece. “He says his name’s Miroku?” At Sango’s nod, Kagome handed her the phone.

“Hello?”

“Did you get the flowers?”

Her face instantly turned red. “Yes…um… They’re beautiful. Thank you.” She turned her back on her secretary’s openly curious look. “You didn’t have to-”

“Well, I figured now you’ll have something to brag about at your reunion. You can make them all jealous by telling them how *your* man sends you flowers at work for no reason at all.”

She smiled. “Thank you.”

“Your very welcome, Sango.” His voice turned husky, making her shiver.

“Um…how did you get my work number?”

“The phone book, of course.”

“Oh.”

“I didn’t mean to bother you.”

“No, it’s-”

“I just wanted to remind you about tonight. 6 o’clock, your place. Wear something sexy.”

The phone went dead as he hung up. Sango stared blankly at it before placing it back on the cradle. She turned to see Kagome with her hands on her hips waiting expectantly.

“Well?” she asked. “Who’s Miroku? Are you seeing somebody and didn’t tell me?”

“Not exactly.”

“What do you mean, ‘not exactly’?” Sango glanced at the still open doorway. Kagome followed her gaze. “Oh, right!” She rushed to close it, locking it behind her and ran back to lean over the desk at her boss. “So?”

Sango slowly walked around the desk, choosing her words carefully. “You know last week when I was complaining about my high school reunion and you gave me that number for the escort service?”

Kagome shrugged. “Yeah, so?”

“Well, I called it the other day.”

The secretary paused, taking in her meaning. “You mean…the guy on the phone…?”

“Yeah.”

“And he sent you *flowers*!?” She squealed in delight. “Give me that number back! I want one too!”

Sango rolled her eyes at the woman jumping up and down like a little kid in her office. “Honestly, Kagome…”

“What? He sent you *flowers*, Sango. That’s so romantic!”

She sneered and rounded the desk to flop down in her leather office chair. “I don’t have time for romance, Kagome. That’s why I had to hire someone to play my fiancé.”

“Well then I’d say you’re getting your money’s worth. I’ve never heard of an escort sending a client flowers.”

“Don’t you have some numbers to crunch or something?”

She glared. “Fine, Miss I-Don’t-Need-Love. I’ll leave you to wallow in peace.” Unlocking the door, Kagome headed back to her desk, leaving it open.

Sango picked up the card and read over the words one more time. This was *not* going as she had anticipated.
