Chapter 2
Slowly Alex returned to the conscious world, feeling strangely rejuvenated. She opened her eyes cautiously; afraid the light might hurt her eyes. When nothing happen she looked around, sitting up. She looked down at her body, her brow furrowing in confusion. *How...How could I have fall to the bottom…but not be hurt?* She looked up, expecting to see the roof of the well-house, instead she was greeted with a blue sky. “What the hell?!”
Alex quickly got to her feet, grabbing her bag which lay a few inches away. She slung the bag over her shoulder and proceeded to climb out of the well. The whole process was fairly difficult, but surprisingly it wasn’t her cloths that hindered her, it was her boots. Every time she’d get a good foot hold her boots would slip, causing her to slam into the wall of the well. After much pain, aggravation, and a lot of help from the vines inside the well, Alex peeked her head over the edge of the well. She looked around, then tossed her bag over the lip and hauled herself up. She sat on the lip of the well for a moment, staring down at the bottom, then she swung her legs over the other side, her feet landing on the soft grass.
She stood there for a moment, staring straight ahead. *Where am I?...Man this is like some twisted version of Wizard of Oz...and I hate that movie…* With a small frown on her lips, Alex picked up her back and started walking. There was no point for her to remain by the well, because she obviously wasn’t in the same world. She walked for a while until she found a path. Alex followed the path until she could see what lay at the bottom of the hill she stood upon. At the bottom of the hill lay a village. *Are they Amish or something?* With a shrug she headed down the hill, not once thinking her appearance would scare them.
As Alex reached the village she spotted a man. At first he didn’t see her, but when he did she was well aware of it. The man cried out in fear and ran into the village screaming, “help! Demon!Demon!” Moments later a man with white hair, golden eyes, and a red outfit of some kind appeared before her. He walked up to her and sniffed her, then took a step back and frowned. “She doesn’t smell like a demon.” Alex arched an eyebrow in confusion, then noticed the man had white ears on the top of his head. “What the fuck?”
Now Alex was in a bad mood and freaked out. First she’d fallen down a strange glowing well, woken up unharmed, which wasn't bad just confusing, and then had to climb out. Now she had some guy run from her screaming that she was a demon and another sniff her and proclaim that she wasn’t. Normally Alex wouldn’t mind being called a demon, it was sort of a compliment to her, but with everything that had happened, she was in no mood to joke around.
Then four other people made themselves known. One was a man, the other two were women, and one a child. One woman had what appeared to be a small child with a fox tail in her arms and the other had a two-tailed cat in her arms. Alex almost screamed at the sight of them. She wasn’t afraid, just totally freaked out and pissed off that she was in a position where she was fairly helpless. If there was one thing Alex hated it was feeling helpless. “Inuyasha! That’s no demon…she’s a human…from my time,” said the girl holding the fox child. The one that Alex assumed was Inuyasha turned and looked at the girl, a skeptical expression on his face. “Then why does she look like that?” With a sigh the girl set the fox child down, who immediately jumped on Inuyasha’s shoulder and stared at her. Alex was tempted to glare at him, but watched the girl instead. The girl walked toward her, smiling, and held out her hand. “Hi, I’m Kagome.” Alex looked at her hand for a moment, then shook it, being careful not to cut her with her finger-guards. “And this is Inuyasha, that’s Shippou, that’s Sango and Kilala, and that’s Miroku,” she said indicating every person when she spoke their name. Alex smiled half-heartedly, “hi…I’m Alex…”
Just as Alex finished speaking an old woman with an eye patch appeared. “Kagome…do you know this demon.” Kagome laughed weakly and looked to Alex apologetically, then turned to the old woman. “No, Kaede this is Alex…she's from my time.” Kaede nodded, “sorry, child. I meant no offense by calling you a demon, it is ye appearance that confused me.” Alex only nodded, unsure what to do or say. Kagome turned back to Alex, smiling, “um…how did you get here…Inuyasha and I are the only ones that can go through the well.” Alex frowned, holding back a sarcastic comment. “I don’t know. The stupid thing glowed and so did I. I looked inside and then passed out. When I woke up I was in the bottom of the well in this…time…” Kagome nodded, biting her lower lip, a worried look crossing her features, but it vanished quickly to be replaced with a smile.
The man named Miroku then walked up to Alex, smiling, “don’t worry miss we’ll get you back home.” Behind him Alex could see Sango seething, but not at her, she appeared to be mad at Miroku. Alex scratched her head and nodded, “uh…thanks…” She looked to Kagome, who nodded as well. “Yeah, come on, I better get you back before a demon attacks or someting.” Alex’s eyes widened slightly and she looked from the others to Kagome. “Demons?” Shippou smiled and jumped from Inuyasha’s shoulder, landing at Alex’s feet. He then jumped onto her shoulder and smiled, “yeah, I’m a fox demon. Inuyasha’s a demon too…well he's a half demon.” Alex stared at the young fox demon, unsure how to react to a demon being on her shoulder. She simply nodded and looked back to Kagome. Kagome smiled again and walked past her. “Come on, I’ll get you back to our time.” Alex just nodded and followed after her, Shippou still on her shoulder and the others trailing behind.
A little while later the group reached the well. Kagome sat on the lip of the well and swung hers legs over. She looked back to Alex and waved her over. Alex nodded and walked toward the well, but when she got within a yard of it a barrier sprung up around the well. It knocked Alex back, causing her to slam into the ground hard. She lay still for a moment, Kagome and the others surrounding her, asking if she was ok. After a moment she sat up and growled under her breath. Kagome frowned and looked up at Kaede. “Kaede…what do you think caused that?” Kaede shook her head and felt Alex’s forehead. “I don’t know, perhaps the child is meant to be here.” Miroku looked to Kaede and nodded, “you may be right Lady Kaede. I have a feeling this has something to do with the Shikon, though. The Shikon keeps the well open, if its keeping Alex away then maybe it wants her here…”
Alex growled again and climbed to her feet. She stalked away from the group and toward the well. “Hey, wait! Alex what are you doing?!” called Kagome. Alex ignored her and stepped up to the barrier. She pressed the tip of one of her finger guards to it, causing the bar to to shimmer. After a moment she walked away, heading away from the group and into the forest. In the blink of an eye Inuyasha was standing before her, arms folded across his chest.
“And where do you think you’re going?” Alex clenched her teeth, glaring daggers at the half demon. “Away from here! I can’t get back home because of…something! This whole situation is freaking me out, not to mention the stress. If you don’t want a very bitchy girl on your hands I suggest yove leave so I can go cool off!” Inuyasha just snorted and stood his ground, then Kagome came up beside him. She looked at Alex, “I’m really sorry…look we’ll figure this out.” Alex just sighed and looked down, “thanks…but I don’t think I’ll be able to go home. That barrier was really strong…and it doesn’t seem like it wants me to go back…I just need some alone time.” Kagome smiled and nodded, “come on Inuyasha, let’s give her some time to herself. She’ll be safe by the well.” Inuyasha looked down to Kagome in surprised and began to protest, but before he could speak Kagome had already started to walk away. “Feh! Don’t get into any trouble,” and with that he left with the others.
Alex watched them go and sat down, her back resting against a tree. She held her pack to her chest, her knees pulled close to her body. She stared straight ahead, her face emotionless, but the pain and sadness was evident in her eyes. *Why me? What did I ever do to deserve this? I guess this is what I get for being a rebel and breaking the rules…* Alex buried her face in her pack in defeat, but she refused to let her tears fall. It had been a long time since she’d cried and she wasn’t about to start now. In her mind crying made someone weak and there was no way she’d do anything that made her weak.
