Chapter 2: Miroku’s contemplation’s

To say that Miroku had been angry upon discovering that Sango and Inuyasha we’re now mated would have been an understatement. The less-than-holy monk was positively enraged. He remembered clearly the evening they had walked back in to camp, separately, as if they could conceal from their friends the closeness that had been created between them.

Inuyasha and Sango had sat down around the newly lit fire, their companions had been forced to wait longer than expected for the promised firewood, to eat their meal. Inuyasha had chosen a seat next to Kagome while Sango had seated herself between himself and Shippo. They had tried to act as though nothing untoward had happened during their absence but Miroku could tell that something was going on. He couldn’t detect Inuyasha’sll oll on her body as a demon could have, they had of course bathed before returning to the campsite, and Miroku’s senses simply weren’t sensitive enough to pick up on the subtle change in her scent. But he didn’t need demonic eyesight to make out the prominent bite mark on her throat in the firelight.

When he spotted the telltale sign of their mating on her neck, Miroku had felt an invisible fist clench his heart. How could she? How could she give her self to a man who treated her so harshly, after he had gone out of his way to be charming with her. That bitch! The houshi was furious, he felt betrayed by the demon slayer.

Unable to finish his rice, he got up from his seated position and walked away from camp without a word. He had to get away from them before he did something that would jeopardize the integrity of their group or get him a thorough beating at the hands of Inuyasha. As he walked through the trees, trying to escape what he now knew, he felt tears on his cheeks. How can I have lost her to him? Why did she choose that barbaric half-breed over me? She was mine, my prize!

His thoughts stopped him dead in his tracks. Sango wasn’t a trophy, she was a woman, a woman he cared for deeply. I love her…don’t I? He was surprised when the answer came unbidden from deep within his soul. …No … As he processed the significance of his statement, he realized that the feeling that had overwhelmed him before, wasn’t despair at having his love for her go unrequited. Rather, what he’d felt was the burning fury of his bruised ego.

- “Why didn’t I notice before? Why couldn’t I tell the difference between feelings of love and a sense of ownership?” He asked the night.

Miroku was disgusted has he realized that he had acted towards Sango with such heartlessness. He understood now that he didn’t love her but he still cared about her as a friend. He had used her body has his plaything, touching her inappropriately whenever she was within reach. He had ignored her protest, thinking that her anger was only pretence. Am I so conceited that I thought she secretly appreciated my attention? Shame washed over him.

So rapped up in his own self-recrimination, Miroku didn’t hear Sango approach him from behind. He turned around sharply has he felt her hand on his shoulder.

- “Miroku…” She asked tentatively. She knew she had hurt him. She felt responsible for his abrupt departure from the camp, and so she had sought him out so she could explain herself to him.

The shame that had plagued him upon discovering the depth of his callousness redoubled has he saw the guilt in her eyes. She feels guilty for rejecting me. She thinks she betrayed my love for her by falling in love with another man. She certainly gives me more credit than I deserve.

- “Sango, I…”. What could he do to make he understand that she was not to blame.

- “I’m sorry Miroku” It was the first time she had called him by his name. “We didn’t…I never meant to hurt you. I don’t know exactly how it happened but…” He cut her off.

- “Don’t apologize!” He said harshly. Immediately, he regretted his words. He had no intention of hurting her, but he couldn’t bear to hear her ask forgiveness when she had done nothing wrong. Miroku took a deep breath to calm himself and began to speak again. “I’m sorry Sango, tdidndidn’t come out right.”

How could he explain himself. He had to make her see that she was not to blame, to make her understand that he was the one who should be apologizing.

- “You have nothing to apologize for Sango. If anything I should be asking for your forgiveness.” He paused to take another fortifying breath. “I was the one who didn’t understand. I forced myself on you when it was clear that you didn’t appreciate my advances. I have been a terrible friend to you.”

Sango was floored, she had come to him thinking she needed to make emends for betraying his affections but instead he was the one who was apologizing.

- “No Miroku, I…” But he stopped her again.

- “Please Sango, let me finish before you say anything else.” He stated. “I was hurt when I saw his mark on you, but not for the reasons you think. I realized that it isn’t my heart that was injured, but rather my ego. And for that I feel ashamed. I know that I care for you, you’re amazing so it’s impossible for anyone not to care for you.” He paused. “Despite that, I acted like a cad, I saw you as a challenge and I betrayed our friendship by treating you as just another woman to be seduced.”

Miroku took another pause has he studied her face to gauge her reaction to his words. The look of guilt that had previously dominated her features was slowly melting into a look of anger has she realized that he was indeed heartless. That’s all I was to him; just another conquest, a piece of meat. She intended on giving him a piece of her mind. Your right Miroku, you don’t deserve to be called my friend. But he interrupted her before she could express her thoughts.

- “But I’m happy that you have found someone who does love you, as you deserve to be loved. Until now I haven’t acted honorably towards you but I intend to change that. Please give me a chance and I’ll prove to you that you can depend on my friendship…on me.” With those words, he took her into his arms and enveloped her into a loving hug. “I really am happy for you. Despite his short temper, Inuyasha is an honorable man and truly deserving of your love…as deserving as I wasn’t."

Sango was so confused. At first she had felt guilty, then, understanding the depth of his betrayal she had been furious; but now, wrapped with the warm cocoon of his arms, she felt pity for Miroku. He’d lived his live with Naraku’s curse dangling over his head like the sword of Damocles. Was it really surprising that he took all of life so scenly. ly. But she could feel his sincerity now, she knew that if she granted him the second chance he begged for, he would be the friend she had always wanted him to be.

- “We none of us are blameless Miroku. We’ve all acted inappropriately at one point in time in our lives, we’ve all made mistakes…myself included.” She had made her decision. “If you’re willing to try to mend our friendship, then so am I.” She stated has she wrapped her arms around his waist, trying to show him that her forgiveness was genuine.

That had been months ago now, and Miroku had been true to his word. In all this time, he had never placed a lecherous hand upon her. Rather, he had spent long nights talking with her, as friends should, learning all he could about her. And has timed passed he realized that he had been right about Sango, she was truly amazing. He was almost surprised at the depths of her character. Sango was intelligent, caring, generous, selfless and, to his utter amazement, blessed with an almost wicked sense of humor. He really had been conceited if he had failed to notice that before.

A/N: Okay! I hadn’t originally planned to continue this story but someone requested more so I’m going to give it a try. Next chapter should deal with Kagome’s reaction to Sango and Inuyasha’s relationship. And, if I can manage it, I’ll try to kick Naraku’s butt into oblivion and give you lemon scented happily-ever-after conclusion. I’m not making any promises.

A/N 2: I really do like Miroku, but it’s so easy to make him out to be an arrogant sleaze.

A/N 3: Please check out my other fic “Together”. I had a bitch of a time writing it and I want to know if it’s any good. And, of course, don’t forget to review this too. I’m still new at this writing thing and I need all the feedback I can get.
