Chapter 2
Kagome climbed out of the well and just sat on the edge. She ran over the argument she and Inuyasha had just had. Why couldn’t he understand? She needed to go to school. She’d missed so much lately, she wasn’t even sure she’d pass a couple of her classes. It was the same argument time and time again. She sighed and jumped down, heading towards the stairs…….then stopped. There was something on the ground next to the well. She hoped Souta hadn’t been playing in here again, but as she got closer, her expression changed to complete bewilderment.
It was Arisa’s backpack.
She bent over and fingered through the contents. All of Kagome’s school work was in there. Everything Arisa had promised to spend all weekend helping her with. Kagome suddenly felt incredibly guilty. She was supposed to be back here yesterday night, but had stayed with Inuyasha after he’d been hurt. More and more frequently, she was neglecting her obligations here. ‘I hope grandpa came up with a good excuse for Arisa’ she thought. She hefted Arisa’s backpack, along with her own, up to her house, trying to figure out how she was going to make this up to a good friend.

Arisa’s senses came back one at a time. First, she heard crickets chirping close by. Then, she felt the cold ground she was laying on. It smelled like dirt, slightly musty. Gradually, the wall in front of her came into focus. It was almost pitch dark. She sat up, trying to figure out where she was. hen, hen, it all came flooding back. She sprang to her feet, and tripped over something on the ground, slamming her into the side of the well. She tried to focus on the object, but there wasn’t enough light to see anything. ‘I must have been out for a long time’ she thought, looking out of the well at the sky. She could see a few stars. ‘It must be really late…….wait…SKY!?!’ She stared, completely dumbfounded.
It took some effort to climb out of the well. The hand holds she was sure she’d seen before weren’t as prominent as she’d thought they’d been. She climbed over the side, and landed in the soft grass next to the well. ‘Grass!?!’ She picked her head up and stared.
At nothing.
She turned in a circle a few times. Absolutely nothing. The well was sitting in the middle of a meadow with dense forest all around. A breeze whispered through the canopy of trees, and besides the crickets, there was no other sound. ‘What the hell is going on?’ She walked a little ways away from the well. The sounds of her own foot steps brushing through the grass were very loud in the deep silence. ‘This is stupid. I must have hit my head and still be unconscious.’ But she could still feel the dull ache in the shoulder she’d smacked into the side of the well. She couldn’t resist the urge, and pinched the back of her hand. It hurt. She bent down and combed her fingers through the grass at her feet, grabbing a handful and pulling it up. Singeingered the grass, feeling the texture and fragility of it, then opened her hand and watched as the breeze carried it away. She knew she was awake. Everything felt too real. ’But where was everything? The shrine building, Kagome’s house, the whole city for that matter.’ She felt panick surge through her chest, but since she had no idea what to even panick at, the feeling faded into just pure confusion. ’I have to find someone. ’
“Hello?” She yelled into the night. “Is anyone out there?” She hadn’t really expected an answer, but still felt her hopes fall when no one called back. She stood very still, listening to the trees sway and creak.
’I can’t just stand here all night, but which way should I go? It all looks the same.’ And it did, especially in the dark. Just trees in every direction she turned. She considered briefly just staying put until the sun came up, but she had no idea what time it was to begin with, and she was too freaked out to stay still. The need to move feuling a rather crazy decision, she closed her eyes, and turned quickly in a circle, letting fate decide which direction she’d go in. She opened her eyes, staring at the tree line in front of her, then set off into the night.

“OK, thanks for your help. Let me know if you hear from her.” Kagome hung up the phone, and leaned against the wall. No one had heard from Arisa since after school on Friday, and now it was Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t like her to not come over, and then not even call. Something had happened, she could feel it. The biggest mystery of all was her backpack. Why had it been in the shrine? She’d obviously been there some time Friday afternoon, but what happened to her then? One question kept leading to another and another and another. Had someone come on to her property and actually kidnapped her here? As strange as it sounded, it was the only thing she could come up with right now. She was way too worried to think straight. Her mother had called the police this morning, so they were looking now too. Kagome sent a fervent prayer to heaven for her safety, then tried to concentrate on her studies. She still had two tests to take, one tomorrow and another Tuesday. They were very important, and she really needed to do well. She tried to make light of it in an effort to concentrate. ‘She’s probably just ill or something. I bet she’ll be at school tomorrow just like normal.’ It wasn’t working, so she put away her books and just stared out the window of her room. ‘Please, Please let her be alright.’

If only Arisa had known how close Kaeda’s village was, but fate seemed to have different plans for her, sending her off in the complete opposite direction, straight towards the borderthe the Western Territories.
