Chapter 2: Memories
She hit his chest with a mighty 'thud'. She wrapped her arms around his slender waist and buried her face in his elaborate garments.
"I missed you so much, my Lord. I was beginning to wonder if you would ever return."
Sesshoumaru looked down at the top of the raven-headed girl, no... woman, wrapped around his form. He couldn't help but silently inhale her heavenly scent, once again. After a moment, Rin released her grip from her Lord and took a couple of steps back.
"Please forgive me, my Lord."
"Happy Birthday Rin," he stated, nonchalantly as always.
Rin snapped her face up and looked at him with a look of total surprise on her beautiful face. He wore his usual, blank expression, but his eyes held a warmness.
"I must update my logs, Rin. I will be in my study if you need me; otherwise I will expect you at dinner."
"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama.”
With that, Sesshoumaru glided past her, lightly brushing her arm with his boa. (Is it a boa or a tail? I'm still kind of confused.) The light, fuzzy contact caused a shiver to course down her spine. Rin turned and watched as he ascended the long stairway. She hadn't felt this happy in weeks. Her Lord had finally come home. She could her heart fill with joy until it felt it was going to burst. Her joy was quickly shattered when she heard the shrill voice of the toad.
"Rin, why the hell are you just standing there with that stupid grin on your face!? Silly little wench!"
Rin could feel the heat rising in her neck and face and the all too familiar knot in her stomach of embarrassment. She hadn't realized she had been smiling...? She shook her head trying to erase her previous thoughts, and then she quickly turned toward the toad that stood a few feet away in the entrance way to the western hall.
"Shut up, you ugly little toad or I will come over there and kick your rotten teeth out of your nasty mouth!!!"
"You wouldn't dare!” spat Jaken.
"Oh, wouldn't I?" Rin questioned taking a few steps toward the youkai. Jaken could see the rage flash in her bright, brown pools. She meant business. He quickly turned around and scuttled down the hallway he was standing in the entrance of.
"Stupid human! It amazes me the patience Lord Sesshoumaru posses for you! If it were up to me, I would have gotten rid of you long ago!"
"What did you say!?" the anger in her voice was fierce. She quickly gave chase of the toad down the hallway. She'd only run a few feet when she scolded herself. 'Get a hold of yourself, Rin! He's not worth your effort. I'm not a child anymore. I have to learn to control my urges to wring his slimy green neck!'
She soon let out another large sigh, and she felt the tug in her stomach. She was starving! She then realized that she hadn't eaten since breakfast, and all she had had then was an orange. She was much to excited about her Lord's return to worry about such a thing as food! She turned and began to walk down the stretch of hallway she had just previously chased Jaken down moments earlier, reaching the foyer. She ascended the large stair, hesitating at the top. Should she turn left toward Sesshoumaru's study or should she turn right and head to her quarters?
'Sesshoumaru is most likely very busy. I will leave him to his work.' She turned to the right, around the corner and down the hall toward her quarters stopping for only a second to eye the closed door. She hadn't been inside that room for at least two years, for the last night she tried to enter during the middle of the night, after having an awful nightmare, she had found the door locked. At first, she was very confused. It had never been locked before. Why now? Rin just stood there for a moment and then the realization hit her like a ton a bricks. His door wasn't locked by chance. Oh no, there was a reason and a very good on at that.
She was almost fifteen years old at the time, and she had just begun going through puberty just a year before. She noticed that during that time, there was a certain time of the month when Lord Sesshoumaru would totally avoid her all together. She remembered questioning him about it one day and he had simply stated, "You’re in heat, Rin. This will happen every month from now on until your body will no longer be able to carry children. This is your fertile time, and being a dog demon, I am naturally drawn to the scent."
She had had no need to delve further, for she knew full well what he meant and why he desired the distance between them. She remembered leaving the room in a rush, not being able to look at her Lord after what he had just confessed to her. She had never been so embarrassed in all her life. Not even when Sesshoumaru ordered one of the female servants to tell Rin what was happening to her body when she had started her monthly bleeding. Not even when the woman explained to her every detail of "the birds and the bees." In fact, she was quite interested in the subject, for it explained some of the new feelings she'd been experiencing, and the changes her body was going through. But needless to say, she had never tried to enter his quarters again uninvited.
Rin shook her head, clearing it of the memories that rushed through her mind within a matter of seconds, and began walking to the room that was right beside his. These were her quarters. 'I must get ready for dinner,' she thought as she opened the door and entered the large room.

Sesshoumaru sat at the beautiful, cherry-wood desk with at least a dozen scrolls sprawled out in front of him and a quill in his right hand. He stared at the only blank scroll among the rest. He had dipped the quill in the ink pot when he heard the annoying shrill of Jaken's voice, asking Rin what the hell she was doing. Sesshoumaru continued to listen as Rin and Jaken spat nasty words at one another. Rin gave chase to the toad youkai and
Sesshoumaru hoped she would catch him and fulfill her threat to kick his teeth in. He could smell the cinnamon spike of her anger, and the sour scent of Jaken's fear of the woman. He loved to listen to the two of them fight. Rin was very feisty, and came up with wondrous come-backs to shut the toad’s harsh words. He listened as Rin climbed the stairs and headed to her quarters. Her scent had changed from the cinnamon spice of her anger to its normal soft, sweet aroma. Rin was never angry or upset for long, so he treasured the scent of those emotions.
It was then that Sesshoumaru remembered the gifts that Jaken had taken and left in Rin’s quarters. Sesshoumaru smiled as a drop of ink left the tip on the quill and landed on the blank scroll. He knew he wouldn't get any work done this evening, but he had to look busy for when she burst into his study.
He dropped the quill back in the ink pot as he listened to her door squeak open. 'I really need to get that squeak fixed,' he thought. He had often been disturbed late at night by the ear splitting noise, at least to him, when Rin got up to relieve herself, or to go down to the kitchen for a drink. He was drawn out of his thoughts by the sound of the swishing of the bags. A few moments later, he heard the delightful cry of her enjoyment of the gifts. He also caught the scent of her tears. He was shocked, but then he caught the scent again, and realized they weren't the salty tears of sorrow, but the sweet tears of joy.
