A Dangerous Substitute

Kagome ran quickly, cutting Nicole off, and getting to the front door first. She locked the door, and advanced on her, trying to pull her bags out of her hands.

“NO YOU CANT GO!” Kagome yelled at the top of her lungs. Fortunately the rest of the Higurashi family had been gone visiting a sick friend of Mrs. Higurashi, and where not able to witness this.

“Kag, I cant do anything about it…I have to go back to school” Nicole said keeping a firm grip on her suitcase. Kagome felt the irony of what Nicole said, as she remr thr the many arguments like this with Inuyasha.

Then something unexpected happed. Kagome laughed. She was laughing so hard that she clutched to her sides and fell on the floor giggling madly.

Nicole slowly put her suitcase down, and made her way to Kagome’s fallen figure. “Kag…you’re strung out, you need to slow down with the coke” Nicole said soothingly, as she rubbed Kagome’s back.

Nicole’s eyes soon shot wide open, as she received a tight embrace from her cousin. “please don’t leave me. I’ve felt so alone for so long, and now that you’re here, I just don’t want you to go!” Kagome cried as her tears started to fall.

Nicole sighed and patted her back. “Kag, you should try to calm yourself down, you don’t want a bad trip” Nicole said more scared than anything else. ’bad trips only lead to destruction’ she added silently to herself.

When Kagome didn’t answer, Nicole lifted her head up and smiled. “plus don’t you have that Sango girl back there?” Kagome quickly stopped crying at those words. ’oh my god! I almost forgot about the others, I almost forgot about our mission’ she thought as she felt the feeling of guilt rise in her.

“now listen to me…I have to go back to school and finish my last semester, and you need to go back to your friends and finish what you started, you can’t let them down” Nicole said still sounding soothing.

Kagome just nodded and then stud up so quickly that she fell right back down. Nicole shook her head, and helped the girl to her feet.

“I’m going to miss you so much though…I never knew how much I missed you until now” Kagome said sadly, as a fresh batch of tears threaten to escape. Nicole smiled. “oh thanks! You just barely came to realize how much I mean to you” Nicole said attempting to make a joke.

However Kagome wasn’t laughing. “tough crowd eh?” Nicole said to her imaginary audience. Kagome rolled her eyes and started to stare at her cousin in annoyance.

“please don’t go” Kagome said in a last attempt. Nicole could only laugh, but then stopped as she could tell Kagome was going to get angry. And a strung out angry Kagome is not a good thing.

Kagome was about to yell when Nicole said “you know I wanted to keep this a surprise, but obviously I have to tell you, so you don’t end up hating me when I leave” Kagome’s anger soon dwindled and she shot her cousin a look of interest. What more could Nicole give her.

“look I only have two months left at the university…soo I’m coming back here to transfer to a university here” Nicole said happily. Kagome jumped up excitedly and ran up to Nicole embracing here tightly. Nicole sighed, as she thought how childish Kagome can be at times.

“so you baka, I’ll be back in no time” Nicole said as she pulled away from Kagome’s hug. “ok kid, I better get going before I miss my plane” Kagome nodded as she helped Nicole by calling a cab for her.

Once the cab home,ome, Kagome helped Nicole with her bags. As the driver placed Nicole’s possessions in the trunk, Nicole pulled Kagome into another hug. (AN: yeah I know lots of hugging, I hope this story doesn’t turn into ‘full house’ ^_^ )

As Nicole pulled away she place something into Kagome’s pocket. “ if you neere gre go there” She said simply. Kagome didn’t fully understand what she meant, but she nodded.

Nicole then smiled and opened the cab door. “behave kid” Was all she said as she climbed into the cab and closed the door. Nicole waved, and Kagome waved back as the car sped off into the busy street.

Kagome reached into her pocket and pulled out a note which read:

Kag,
If you ever feel the need for more blow, or anything else, go to 4009 Sakura Dr.
Ask for jade, and tell him I’m your cousin. I’m sure he’ll give you what ever you
need free of charge.

Kagome placed the paper back into her pocket. Kagome then turned, and headed up the steps to her home. She was now determine to chase her now diminishing high to keep away from the pounding headache that would come soon.

‘two weeks has passed since Kagome’s leave’ Inuyasha thought angrily. “how dare that wench keep me waiting for so long” the hanyou yelled, slamming a fist into a tree trunk.

“then why don’t you go get her?” Inuyasha turned to see it was Miroku who had disturbed ram ramblings. “Oi monk, you shouldn’t be sneaking up on me like that” Inuyasha said trying to filter out any conversation that would have Kagome in it.

“look Inuyasha you are not the only one that grows weary of waiting, you’re the only one that can go through the well, so go and get her. I’m sure she would probably forgive you” Miroku said with his ’I who knows voi voice.

Inuyasha sneered at him and flopped himself down on the grass. “I didn’t do anything wrong! She should be the one to beg for my forgiveness” he said childishly.

Miroku rubbed his pounding temples. “look just go and get her so we can finish our task” Miroku said, and then turned to head back to the hut.

Inuyasha continued to glare until he was sure Miroku was gone. The hanyou then got up and quickly dashed to the well.

Inuyasha leapt from the bottom of the well to the ground beside it. He then quickly ran and jumped onto the secstorstory ledge, crouching right in front of Kagome’s window.

“that wench better have a good excuse for keeping me waiting for so god damn long” he muttered as he looked into her window. What he saw caused him to raise a questioning eyebrow.

Kagome was in bed with her covers held to tightly in her hands. She then tossed the covers off and make her way to her bookshelf.

She straighten a book that had been leaning off center. Kagome then returned to her bed, pulling the covers back on her again. Inuyasha was about to tap on her window, when he heard Kagome yell out in frustration.

She got up again, and started to pick up some scattered clothing that had been left on the floor. As she came back up she locked eyes with the hanyou.

For that moment green met amber in a longing look. Kagome could feel herself blush and she immediately shook it off. Kagome walked up to her window, pulling it open.

Inuyasha leapt in and looked down at Kagome as if he hadn’t seen her in years. ’I never thought I’d miss her so much’ a voice rang through his head. He soon shook the thought out as he smelt something different.

He was about to question Kagome on why she smelt so strange when she said. “what are you doing here, I was going to go back tomorrow” she said as she pointed to her overly stuffed red bag.

“Oi wench, I told you, you can go for a couple of days not fucking a couple of weeks” He said glaring at her. “Inuyasha I really don’t feel like arguing, so I’m sorry I yelled at you, BUT I don’t take back what I said about Kikyou” she said calmly.

“Feh, fine then, lets just get going” He said rather fast. “meet me down at the well I need to write my mom a note” she said and the turned and made her way to her desk.

Inuyasha obeyed and jumped out the window. After Kagome made sure he was gone, she wrote her note quickly, and then opened a different little compartment in her desk.

She grabbed a bag with the altoids box, a lighter, and her two pipes that Nicole have given her. She placed them securely into her red bag and made her way down stairs.

Inuyasha and Kagome entered the hut, where Miroku, Sango, and Shippou were sitting, as they ate. Shippou looked up and yelled happily at the sight of Kagome.

The kitsune dropped his bowl and jumped to embrace her tightly. “what took you so long?” Sango said happily. “my cousin from out of the country came to visit” she said as brightly as she could, telling a half-truth.

Sango could sense Kagome’s nervousness, but she nodded as if she didn’t. Inuyasha had also smelt her nervousness. As Inuyasha and Sango shared a look of acknowledgement.

Shippou was just content in Kagome’s arms. That was until Shippou smelt something odd. “Kagome, why do you smell so different?” the kitsune asked innocently.

Inuyasha had soon lookeay fay from Sango and to Kagome, waiting intently for her to answer. “oh Shippou I’m just trying out a new shampoo” she said sweetly.

Inuyasha growled lightly, knowing full well that she was lying. ’why does the women I care for lying to me?’ Inuyasha thought, but then suddenly realized what he had just thought. ’what! Where the fuck did that come from!’ Inuyasha’s mind screamed.

“lady Kagome, would you like something to eat?” Miroku asked while preparing a bowl. He had already knew the answer. Or so he thought.

“no I’m not hungry, but thanks anyway” she said cheerfully and took a seat next to Sango, still having Shippou in her arms.

Miroku just shrugged and handed the filled bowl to Inuyasha. ’Kagome can smell how ever she wants, just as long as she’s still here’ Shippou thought happily as he attempted to grab his bowl, while still holding on to Kagome as if she were to disappear if he let go.

Kagome giggle at the affectionate kitsune. ’now if only Inuyasha could be as sweet’ she thought smiling. Sango had grabbed the bowl a gave it to Shippou, who thanked her.

“hey Kagome” Miroku said, while handing another bowl to Inuyasha. “hmm” Kagome replied as she gave a look of disgust toward Inuyasha, who had his face into his bowl.

“You look like you lost some weight” The Monk said. Inuyasha quickly looked up from his bowl as soon as he smelt Kagome’s nervousness return. “really, I hadn’t notice” She said quickly, and then forced out a loud laugh.

Kagome’s nervousness soon changed to anger, as her friends gave her a look of ’your lying’. Sure she was, but its not like she wanted them to know. She then quickly got up, causing Shippou to fall with a thud on the floor.

“look! I don’t have some kind of eating disorder or anything like that! So just lay off me!” She yelled, but then felt embarrassed. She had attacked them without a reason.

Not wanting to face them at the moment, she quickly walked out of the hut. The three of them just stared at each other in disbelief. “its usually Inuyasha who yells out in anger for no reason, not Kagome” Shippou said, but then ran behind Sango when the hanyou gave him a death glare.

“must be felling guilty” Miroku said wisely. “but what could she possibly feel guilty about?” Inuyasha asked the monk, who only responded.

“I can’t help you with that one” Sango sighed and stared at the entrance of the hut. A feeling of dread filled her as she thought of her best friend.

That night while everyone was asleep, Kagome tossed and turned in her sleeping bag. Her head was pounding as if it might explode into a thousand pieces.

She jerked up to see that everyone was still sleeping. ’should I risk it?’ she thought to herself, as she pulled her red bag to her. She debated weather or not she should chase it again, but then soon got her answer as her head pounded more furiously.

Kagome ripped open her bag quickly and pulled out a miniature purse that looked exactly like her large bag. (AN: I actually have a large off the shoulder red dickies backpack, and the miniature version ^_^ yeah I’m strange)

She then got up and left the hut. Inuyasha who had been pretending to be asleep, opened his amber eyes. ’what could she be up to?’ He questioned silently. “well I guess I’mng tng to have to go find out” He said and was on his way out when he heard.

“where’s Kagome?’ Sango said tiredly. “that’s what I’m going to find out, so be quite” He said more forcefully then he meant it to be. “wait” Sango said as she got up from her ’bed’.

Inuyasha only glared at her. “what is it?” He said in a threatening tone. “let me go talk to her, I’ll be able to get more out of her then you can” She said coolly. “what makes you so sure” Inuyasha said in a disbelieving voice.

“because baka, I’m her best friend, she tells me a lot more then you know” Inuyasha glared at her, but realized that she was right. Which made him even more angry.

“Feh, go then, but hurry up and get that wench back in here before something happens” Sango only nodded, and then left to fallow Kagome.

Kagome placed the pipe back into her bag, and felt instant relief. She laid herself on the grass, her dilated eyes gazing up at the stars.

’Nicole was wrong…I still can’t help my feelings for Inuyasha…I’ve known this for a while now…so why am ill ill doing this…’ her thoughts were soon interrupted though.

“Kagome are you ok?” Kagome turned to see Sango standing behind her. “yeah, what brings you out here?” She asked sweetly.

“I could ask you the same question” Sango said timidly, fearing another outburst from her. Kagome just coued ued to smile. “I couldn’t sleep, so I cam out to watch the stars” Sango only nodded, not wanting to force anything out of her, until she had to.

“well I’m going back in now, wanna come?” Kagome said as she grabbed her bag, and pushed herself up. ’DAMN’ Sango thought, but then soon her eyes traveled to Kagome’s bag. ’I wonder’.

That next morning Miroku was meditating by a nearby tree with Inuyasha at his side, who seem to be liking the silence. Kagome and Shippou were playing a card game.

Shippou laughed loudly as he placed his final card down quickly before Kagome could. Sango who had been watching smiled as the kitsune jumped around happily yelling “I win! I win!”

Her smile soon faded into a questioning look as she was looking at the same bag Kagome had last night, still hung protectively over her shoulder. Kagome laughed and started to pick up the cards.

“wanna play a game of speed Sango?” Kagome asked still laughing at Shippou, who was still doing a victory dance. “nah, I’m not really in the mood” She said simply and stood up to go and speak with Inuyasha and Miroku.

Kagome felt a little hurt but then looked up at Shippou. “ok then, hey Shippou wanna play again?” Shippou nodded quickly and ran over to Kagome.

“so did you get to find out what was wrong?” Miroku said with his eyes still closed. “no I didn’t” Sango said still feeling hurt that Kagome wouldn’t confined in her.

“Feh, well there obviously something strange going on. First she smells funny. Second she’s a lot more irritable, and third I can smelt it when she is lying to me” Inuyasha said sounding a little irritable himself.

“well what ever it is, it must be bad if she isn’t telling me, and I think it has to do with that bag she keeps carrying around” Sango said quietly, just incase Kagome could hear their conversation.

“that’s stupid, what could a bag have anything to do about it” The hanyou said quite annoyed at Sango’s ’stupid’ remark.
