Last Chances: A Promise Made
“ONE MORE SONG!!!!” Yuka cheered.
There were cheers and excited howls thrown around the large karaoke room. Kagome clapped her hands, laughing at her friend’s antics, positive the provided liquor had something to do with it. Kagome sat her own can of beer down—beer just didn’t do it for her. She’d have to make sure to order something different when they went to the bar.
“Your turn, Kagome-Chan! Let’s hear one!” Eri said, handing the microphone to her friend.
“Oh, no! I’d rather here you guys sing!” Kagome giggled, holding up her hands.
“Aw, come on! Let’s hear one!”
Kagome quickly stood up and smiled.
“Well…let me go to the bathroom first! I’ll be right back!”
“You’d better hurry up soon!” Houjou called after her.
“I’ll be right back, I promise!”
Kagome grabbed her miniature backpack and left the partying room, a smile on her face. She was definitely having a great time—so far, they’d been shopping, been to different restaurants, and once they were done with their karaoke marathon, they’d hit the bars before calling it quits. Kagome stretched for a minute before bending over to take a drink of the water fountain against the wall.
“Well, well…never would have pegged you to be the type of girl who’d wear pure white undies, Kagome-San.”
Kagome quickly stood up straight, turning around and glaring at her peeping tom. Said ‘peeping tom’ turned out to be her classmate, Yuuji. Yuuji was beyond handsome, with his shoulder-length black hair and his pretty brown eyes, but he had a mixed personality—one Kagome thought was eerily similar to Kouga and Inuyasha. Maybe that’s why they had been dating for almost a year.
“Yuuji-Kun! You pervert!”
“Who’s the pervert? That skirt is really short on you.” He chuckled.
Kagome could only blush—Yuuji was a pervert, but he was kind, funny and he made her feel special. Kagome worried what Inuyasha would do if he’d ever found out about him, but then again, Kagome thought dryly, why would he care? It wasn’t like she and her Niisan were dating. Kagome watched as Yuuji reached into the pocket of his black denim jeans and pulled out his usual brand of cigarette—Marlboro. Kagome personally hated his smoking habit, but she knew she couldn’t do anything to change that. As they leaned against the wall across from the karaoke room, the smell of cigarette smoke filled the hallways. Kagome gave a small smile at him.
“So, why aren’t you back inside with everyone else?”
“Hey, I had to check on my girl. What’s bothering you, Kagome-San?”
Kagome shook her head with a small smile. Yuuji was very considerate, always able to tell when there was something wrong with her.
“Well…I’m not sure, to be honest. I guess I’m just feeling a little nostalgic is all.”
“Well, graduation will do that to you. What do you say…we partake in our own little celebration?”
He extinguished the cigarette on the floor beneath his white gym shoe and put both his arms on either side of Kagome, seemingly pining her against the wall. Kagome blushed, getting a strong whiff of his own, personal scent; a mixture of cigarettes and the latest Calvin Klein cologne. He tipped her chin upwards, smirking at her slightly.
“What do you say, Kagome-San? I mean, it’s been a year already…”
“I know…it’s just that…” she replied shakily.
“Tell you what, sweetheart, when everyone goes to the bar, meet me in front of Koi Club, okay?”
“K…Koi Club?! But…that’s a…!”
He just gave a simple nod before moving.
“If you don’t show up, it’s cool, but if you do…I promise I’ll show you things you’ve never seen before.”
Kagome looked down at her feet nervously, a blush flaring across her cheeks. He wanted to go to a love hotel—that she could understand, but even still…was she ready for it? Maybe if she did it, she could finally free herself of the lingering feelings she had for her…Niisan. She looked at him and nodded.
“Wh…why wait? Let’s go now.”
His eyes widened with obvious surprise. He hadn’t expected her to agree—Kagome was old-fashioned that way; he expected her to wait until marriage or something like that, but she was actually agreeing? He decided to not look good fortune in the mouth and nodded.
“Yeah…gimme a minute.”
He headed back inside the karaoke room for a minute and Kagome could hear him smoothly craft a lie that involved her not feeling too well. There were no objections and just like that, they were in the clear. Yuuji put his arm around Kagome’s shoulder as they exited the karaoke bar. As they started out walking down the busy streets, Kagome bumped shoulders with someone. She quickly turned around to bow and apologize when she met up with the familiar brown eyes of none other than…
“Inuyasha…?!”
Inuyasha looked just as surprised, Kagome noticed. What she also took observance in was how he was dressed; he was wearing a casual pair of black jeans with a matching, black blouse, opened at the throat. His long, black hair was pulled into a ponytail and out of his face and Kagome could smell some sort of cologne on him. Inuyasha locked eyes with Yuuji and the tension in the air rose.
“Hey, if it isn’t my favorite student!”
Kagome instantly brightened up when she saw Kouga standing next to Inuyasha, dressed just as handsomely in a pair of dark, blue jeans, a black undershirt and a white blouse. Three pups hadn’t taken away from his handsome demeanor—if anything, he seemed hotter and nicer. Unlike Inuyasha, his long hair was draping down his back slightly, tucked behind his ears.
“Kouga-sensei!” Yuuji grinned.
“Hey, two of my favorite students! So, what are you guys doing out here so late?”
“Well, we…we were just…” Kagome blushed.
Yuuji put his arm around Kagome’s shoulders and could only smile.
“What? Can’t a couple enjoy themselves for a little while?”
Kouga smirked inwardly—he knew there was a lot of ‘enjoying’ to be had and judging by Kagome’s cute blush, they were off to enjoy themselves quite a bit. Inuyasha glared at Yuuji for a moment before looking at Kagome.
“So, where are you going to enjoy yourselves at? I thought you were with your friends?”
“We were! But Yuuji and I decided to separate from the group for a little while.”
“Like I asked, where are you two going?”
Kagome blushed and looked away from him.
“What does it matter? I’ll be home in the morning, Niisan.”
“Niisan? Oh, so you’re Kagome’s older brother! Hey, nice to finally meet you. I’m Yuuji Ashino. We’re classmates.”
“Yeah…nice to meet you too.” Inuyasha huffed.
Kouga put his hand on Inuyasha’s shoulder and looked at the two students of his.
“Well, don’t mind us. We’re just going out for a few drinks. We’ll see you guys around, okay?”
“Yep. C’mon, Kagome-San.”
Without casting Inuyasha another glance, Kagome followed Yuuji, her cheeks still burning. She didn’t know what was worse; lying to Inuyasha, or knowing that he knew she was lying. Once the young couple was out of earshot, Kouga looked at Inuyasha, narrowing his eyes.
“Idiot! You know where he’s about to take her, don’t you?”
“Feh, like I give a damn.”
“Well, you’ll be giving a damn when Kagome’s laying on her back, legs spread wide open, naked as the day she was born and inviting some other man into your territory.”
It took all Inuyasha had not to grab Kouga and punch him right in his smart-ass mouth. Inuyasha bit down on his lip and gave a small growl.
“There’s no way Kagome would do anything like that with HIM.”
“Inuyasha, there you go again, assuming what Kagome will and won’t do. Damn, what’s wrong with you? Get your ass in gear and go and take what’s yours! Why do you think she walked away from you so easily? It’s because you keep dicking around with how you feel about her!”
Kouga knew Inuyasha was getting more and more pissed by the minute, but Kouga allowed himself an inward smile—he knew the only reason Inuyasha was getting so upset was because Inuyasha knew that he was right. Kouga reached into his wallet, took out a business card and handed it to him.
“Here, it’s the place they are undoubtedly going to.”
“Club Koi? What the hell is this, Ookami?”
“A love hotel, idiot. Anyway, better get going. Unlike some people, I have a wife and kids waiting at home. I’ll take a rain check on those drinks, though. You can make it up to me some other time.”
“Feh.”
Kouga started out on his way, stopping only when Inuyasha asked why Kouga had the business card to a love hotel.
“When you have kids, it’s hard to get a little alone time. That hotel is a lifesaver. Trust me.” He winked.
Inuyasha sighed, looking at the card for a moment. Would Kagome actually check into some skeevy place like this? Without even telling him? Inuyasha thought back to her cold glance at him when she told him that she’d be home in the morning. It was as if she was telling him, ‘I’m going to do whatever the hell I want.’ Inuyasha began his walk towards the hotel just a few blocks away. To him, it looked like an ordinary building, but he could smell what was happening within its confines. He wished he had his full demonic powers in this era; he could just jump from window to window until he found the little punk trying to make it with HIS Kagome. With a sigh, he put the card in his pocket and headed inside. He was greeted by a cute, energetic clerk who didn’t even try to hide the lust in her eyes for him.
“Hello, how can I help you?”
“Yeah, I’m looking for a girl.”
Her look turned slightly weary.
“I’m sorry sir, we aren’t that type of service…”
“No, no! I mean I’m looking for a certain girl who may have come through here!” he sighed, his cheeks reddening.
“Oh, well…what did she look like?”
“Long, black hair, kind of wavy, brown eyes, and wearing a skirt with a black, backpack. She came in here with a guy wearing a white t-shirt and jeans.”
“Hmm…well, now that you mention it, there was a young couple that just came in. The girl was looking a little nervous, but I suppose that’s to be expected of anyone who’s never been here before. I believe they checked into room 121, but I’m afraid I can’t let you up there…”
Inuyasha gave a slight sigh before leaning on the desk, closing his eyes and then opening them with a smirk. He reached out gently grabbing the brown locks of the girl behind the desk, pulling her closer to him.
“See…that’s my little sister up there with that guy. I’m only trying to protect her. But, how about we made a trade…?”
“A…a…trade?” the clerk blushed.
“Yeah. You let me make sure my kid sis is okay and I promise you I’ll do things to you that you couldn’t even imagine. Not even in your wildest dreams.”
That was all it took. Before she knew it, Inuyasha was fully leaning over the desk, kissing the base of her gentle neck. She gave a slight whimper before he moved away, putting two of his fingers to her lips.
“Now, now…how about you wait for me in one of these rooms?”
“I…I can’t! I’m still on duty…”
“Take a break. Once I check on my kid sis, I’ll meet you in…that colorful looking room.”
“That’s room 534. It’s a sort of playroom theme…”
Inuyasha wondered what type of interesting fetishes the people in Kagome’s time had, but for right now, he wanted no part of that knowledge. He gave a wink, nodding his head in the direction of the elevator. Hesitantly, the clerk headed into the elevator, the doors closing behind her. Inuyasha quickly looked behind the desk and searched for the key matching the room number Kagome was in. Once he was out of that hotel, he’d reflect on how loose the women of Kagome’s time was, but his focus was more or less on finding the key that would take him to Kagome. When he finally found the spare key, he hurried up the stairs, not opting for the damn elevator. One, he didn’t know how the damn thing worked, two, if he ran into that horny clerk, Kikyou would probably rain down hell upon him from heaven if he even considered following up on his ‘promise’. He bounded the stairs as fast as his legs could carry him before he arrived at the ‘first’ floor, just one above the main level. The moment he opened the door, his nose was flooded with the various smells of sex in all conceivable forms—including Kagome’s gentle scent melted into all of it. It was faint, but he could smell her nervousness. He scowled the hallways until he came to room 121. He could hear the shower running inside and could catch faint traces of Kagome’s scent as well. Slowly, he put the key into the door and with a small click of the lock; he opened the door as slowly as possible. From what he could see with the small crack in the door, he could see Kagome’s ‘boyfriend’ walk to the shower with a towel slung over his shoulder. Inuyasha bided his time for a minute, waiting for the sound of the shower to turn back on. Once he heard it, he opened the door fully and walked in. Kagome was stretched out on the bed, a white towel wrapped around her body. She was laying flat on her stomach, her arms folded under her chin. Inuyasha smirked to himself—had she bothered to look up at the mirrors just slightly above the bed against the wall, she would have seen Inuyasha locking the door to the bathroom with the key he’d ‘acquired’ before unbuttoning his black blouse. With a predatory glint in his eye, he crawled onto the bed, over Kagome.
“Mmm…Yuuji…?” she asked sleepily.
Kagome released a gentle sigh when she felt his lips on the back of her neck and his warm breath against her moist skin. She could feel his hand caress her side through the soft material of the towel and she whimpered slightly. She tried to roll over, but he kept her on her stomach by gently pressing her back down onto her stomach. It was that motion that allowed her senses to be more alert…more importantly, she was aware of the fact that the shower was still running.
“Yuuji, you left the shower on…”
“Call me by that brat’s name again and I’ll stop.”
Kagome’s eyes flew open, recognizing the masculine voice instantly. She looked up at the mirror and saw Inuyasha hovering over her on all fours, smirking back at her.
“Hey.”
“Inu…!”
He quickly silenced her by placing his hand over her mouth while trailing his free hand down the thin crevice between her back. Kagome shuddered and whimpered slightly into his palm. Her mind was in such turmoil she couldn’t think to ask him why he was there, how he’d gotten in and what if Yuuji walked in on them. All she could focus on was gripping the sheets and feeling his hand over the towel that kept her covered. When he reached her soft, sweet ass he suppressed a small moan. There it was—that scent of arousal, faint, but sure as hell there. Lowering his lips to her ear, he traced her lobe with his slightly rough tongue before whispering to her,
“…Do you want me to keep going?”
Kagome clenched her eyes shut when she felt him take a single finger and run it over her ass and trail down her legs. She realized when his hand stopped at her ankle and began slowly trailing upwards…she was in for it. In her mind, she tried to rationalize the situation—no, she thought, this wasn’t her with Inuyasha, the man of her dreams and fantasies. He hadn’t broken into the hotel room she’d rented with another man and she certainly didn’t feel his fingers creeping beneath her towel and prodding her…
“Mmmph…! Mmmmm….!!!”
Kagome threw her head forward when two of Inuyasha’s fingers invaded her body. It hurt a little, but not so much she couldn’t feel the amazing sensations taking over her body. Fuck it, she thought. Fuck all of rationality and fuck whatever sense her mind was trying to force into that more rational part of her mind. She’d wanted this ever since she was a little girl. She’d always wanted Inuyasha to touch her the way he was and she always wanted to be driven insane by his touch. She flushed, her mind reeling and remembering the few times Inuyasha had assaulted her body the way he was. Morality and loyalty had kept them from going any further, but to hell with both. Boldly, she arched her hips backwards, pushing herself onto his fingers further.
“Kagome…” he whispered against her shoulder.
The sound of the shower shutting off brought Kagome back to her senses, if only for a minute. Inuyasha removed his fingers from her, licked them, and then, smirked at her. He removed his hand from her mouth and bit her earlobe gently.
“You can either stay here and give it up to this bozo who’s ready to make you his…or you and I can finally come to our senses, because dammit, I think it’s long overdo.”
He rolled off the bed quickly, unlocking the bathroom door before taking his leave. Kagome sat up, pressing to the towel to her chest just as Yuuji was exiting the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist. He noticed the red tinting her cheeks and he smirked.
“Well, well…ready for me so soon?”
Kagome looked down, clenching the sheets for a moment.
“Y…Yuuji…I can’t.”
He sat next to her, rubbing her back.
“Hey, I’ll be gentle, I promise.”
“No, it’s not that! I just…don’t feel right doing this. I’m sorry.”
Yuuji sighed a little, but only smiled at her. He’d known for the longest time that Kagome had feelings for someone else and maybe it was a sad dream on his end, but he hoped one day Kagome could come to love him and not the man she actually had her heart set on. With a small sigh, he put his hand on her still damp hair.
“Okay, well…give my regards to your…Niisan.”
Kagome quickly looked at him with a flared blush. He just winked at her.
“Don’t worry. I could tell there was something up when he almost burned that hole into me earlier. Anyway, hurry up and get dressed or I might just have to do…inappropriate things to you.”
Kagome could only smile and hurried to get dressed. She kissed Yuuji on his cheek and suggested that Eri was single and had always had a crush on him. Yuuji promised he take her up on her offer, but he hurried Kagome out of the room, making him swear that if she wasn’t happy with that other guy, she had to come back to him. Kagome simply shook her head on her way out of the door.
“I doubt that’ll happen.”
Kagome all but flew down the stairs, her heart beating loudly in her ears. She was more excited than she’d ever been before. It was then it struck her...this was the feeling that she’d been hiding from herself for so long. Now, it was amplified times one-hundred and making her fly down the stairs even faster. She hurried out of the hotel, looking around quickly, trying to catch her breath. The streets of Shibuya outside of the hotel were just as crowded as they usually were, with people of all ages going about the activities that usually came with daily nightlife.
“You know, for a minute, I thought I was going to have to go home alone.” A familiar voice chuckled.
Kagome froze for a minute. This was it; the moment of truth. When she looked into his eyes, what would she see? What would she feel? Would years and years of yearning and assumed infatuation come to a boil or would she learn that what happened in the hotel room was just a spontaneous moment? Kagome turned slowly, seeing Inuyasha standing a few feet away from her with a small, gentle smile on his face.
“Inuyasha…”
Then, somewhere in her heart, it hit her. Hit her so hard that it resounded through out her body and made her almost shake as if she were cold. When she locked her brown eyes with Inuyasha’s, she knew what happened in the hotel room wasn’t a spontaneous moment. She knew that this he was the one she wanted to be with and if she didn’t go to him soon…she might just lose him. Inuyasha took a small step forward, but that was all it took for Kagome to throw her arms around his neck and embrace him. Not like a sister, not like someone tied down by the past and guilt, but her true self; a girl who’d always been in love with him. Inuyasha wrapped his arms around Kagome with a heavy sigh. He hadn’t been joking; he honestly thought that he scared her off for good. While they held each other, the people around them, walking past them, and the flashing lights of Shibuya that made up a small part of Tokyo—all of it just seemed to disappear. Inuyasha pulled away from her slightly, looking at the face of the woman he’d fought his feelings for so long.
“Kagome…let’s…go home.”
A blush tinted her cheeks, but she didn’t object as she gave him a shy smile. He took her hand and they began the walk home. After a short train ride, they arrived at the stairs of Higurashi shrine. Kagome looked up at the large, white steps, then looked at Inuyasha. He seemed almost nervous, which was surprising for such a proud, loud hanyou.
“Inuyasha…I…um…”
Kagome clenched her eyes shut, doing her best to just force what she wanted to say out of her mouth.
“Inuyasha, I can’t stand it! Please, tell me you haven’t just had feelings for me because I look like Kikyou, or…or….just because I’m…convenient or anything like that…!”
Kagome took a deep breath. She felt dizzy, she felt scared…no, she wasn’t scared. She was terrified. Yet the words from her mouth didn’t cease. She’d come this damn far, she wasn’t going to back down now.
“Just hear me out! I’m so nervous right now and the words probably won’t come out, but just…listen! Please! Inuyasha…I can’t keep living with this burden on my shoulders. I can’t stand thinking that everytime I dream about you, I’m doing something wrong Kikyou. Even though she’s given us her blessings, I still feel so guilty…! I can’t stand it…”
She sat down on the step of the stairs and buried her face in her hands. Years and years of confessions and feelings were finally starting to surface, but she knew if she and Inuyasha were going to take that step, she wanted to not be confused about this and she wanted him to understand more than anything…
“I couldn’t stand seeing Kikyou with you and you two being so happy and then…then when she got pregnant, I thought I’d lost you forever. Then…”
With tears trailing down her cheeks, she looked up at the dark sky, illuminated by the beautiful stars, a small smile on her face.
“…Kikyou died and she took my little niece or nephew with her. All because she saved my life! I’ve had to live with that damn burden forever…what right did I have to even have feelings for you when I felt like you hated me this entire time?”
“Kagome, I…!” Inuyasha began.
“No! Don’t! Let me finish! I thought you were only by my side because of sympathy…but…even now, four years later…the feelings I’ve had for you since I was a little girl is still there. Inuyasha…”
She looked up at the young man standing over her, his gaze intense as if trying to read her next words.
“…I wouldn’t mind…being with you…I’d be so happy if I was…but, if you’re going to see me as a replacement for Kikyou and continue to live in the past with the guilt…I don’t think…we can be together. I’m sorry, Inuyasha…”
Fresh tears bathed under her eyes and ran down her face.
“But…even…even if we can’t be together because of all that’s happened…I’m still going to love you. I’m going to love you until the day I die, Inuyasha…and even after.”
Her entire body shook, tears streamed down her face at an almost unstoppable pace and she felt so drained, she thought she was going to pass out. The silence stretched between them was almost unbearable. Inuyasha sat next to her with a sigh, looking up at the stars, as if for guidance.
“Is that a promise?”
Kagome raised her head and looked at him, noticing a slight sigh escaping his lips. He looked at her, putting his hand to the side of her face.
“Well? Is it a promise or no?”
Kagome bit her lip before her head dropped once more and more tears came forward.
“Y…yes…Inuyasha…it’s a promise.”
“Kagome, look at me,”
Kagome did her best to raise her head and look at him. When she finally found the strength to look into his beautiful brown eyes that masqueraded his naturally amber eyes, he gave her a gentle smile.
“For a long time, even when she was alive, I always felt like I was betraying Kikyou. I know I confused the hell out of you when you were younger—but what could I do? One minute, I was in love with Kikyou, the next, out of the blue…I start noticing that ‘cute, shy little Kagome’ started growing into a beautiful young woman.”
He wiped her tears away with the calloused pads of his thumbs and put his forehead to her own.
“I hated myself for a long time for even having feelings for you and when Kikyou died, taking our child with her, I didn’t know what to think. I was positive that the gods were punishing me for lusting after you. I may have not been in love with you for as long as you have been me, but…dammit…here we are, four years later. You’ve grown into a beautiful, kind and strong young woman who I know I have feelings for. But damn, Kagome…if you’re going to keep thinking that I’m only chasing after you and doing stuff with you like this because I want a replacement of Kikyou, I don’t see how we can continue either.”
Kagome nodded against his forehead and he could only take her hands and sigh.
“I want you, dammit. I’ll always love Kikyou and that’ll never change, but…if she can forgive me for saying this, I love you and want you by my side, more so now than ever. Kikyou’s already given us her blessing…can’t we just move on from the fucking past?”
Kagome pulled back, looking up at him with brown eyes that shined with the onset of fresh tears. Kagome knew Inuyasha was baring his soul to her and for that, she felt grateful and loved. He smiled—almost smirked at her, in fact before putting his hand to her face once more.
“Besides…I want to hold you. You…not a replacement for anyone else. I want to hold the ballsy, bratty fiery woman who taught me how to…feel things again. I want to hold the young woman whose been by my side for the past four years. I’m tired of keeping you at arms length. I want you in my arms…”
Kagome blushed a bit before standing up. She turned around and put her hand on the railing, as if she was going to head upstairs. Inuyasha wondered if maybe he’d said the wrong thing.
“Inuyasha,”
Kagome turned her head to the side, a small blush on her cheeks.
“I’m…going to take another bath. I…I’ll be waiting for you in my room when I’m done. Promise me though,”
She locked her eyes with his as he stood up, feeling a familiar boldness that made her think of when she offered her fifteen-year-old body to Inuyasha.
“If…I do this, you won’t make me regret it…and…you’ll be gentle.”
It was his turn to blush, but embarrassment was quickly replaced with cockiness.
“I promise you won’t regret it, but…I can’t promise I’ll be gentle.”
Without warning, he wrapped his arms around Kagome from behind her and chuckled.
“I’ve waited years to tear apart this sweet little body of yours and well…I am part dog-demon. But I’ll try…I’ll definitely try.”
