Or Not

Hello everyone, I'm back! I'm sorry I haven't updated for so long but a part of the chapter just refused to come out. However, to compensate for the long wait, this chapter is a bit longer than the previous ones. I hope you enjoy reading it!!!

Chap 18. Or not

Toga and Shoja rushed out of the elevator. Several centuries of experience had taught them how to deal with crowds in critical moments, and now was one of them.

While Shoja asked that people returned to their tasks, Toga approached Koga and Kagura. Koga seemed to be comforting a very distressed Kagura. Toga also noticed that Kagome was nowhere in sight, and Sesshoumaru’s office door was closed.

“What is going on?”

Both turned around, startled. When Kagura saw her future father, tears flooded her eyes and she embraced him. Reluctantly, Toga returned the gesture and gave Koga a questioning look.

“We should get inside and see what is going on; I haven’t heard any noise since Kagome went in.”

Toga frowned.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know. I just arrived when Kagome already went in, and Kagura hasn’t been able to tell me much.”

“Okay, take Kagura to your office; I’ll take it from here.” He gave the young male a reassuring pat on the shoulder and opened the door to his son’s office.

Kagome was having a hard time, she was still lying on the floor trapped under a huge dog, and she had lost all hope of being rescued. Fortunately, she was only under one of Sesshomaru’s paws, and that made it easy to breathe for her. She was getting bored so, to pass time, she began to look at his claws. They were as neat as Sesshomaru’s nails, well polished and clean, but of course, no matter what form he took, the essence was the same, a very conceited being. Then she focused on deeper thoughts and began to analyze the situation she had just put herself in. The dog had passed out; what could be the cause of his transforming into his true self? She now realised why Sesshomaru’s office was the biggest and the ceiling was so high; his true form had to fit in it. This brought her to her next question. Did it happen very often?

A gasp brought her out of her musings, and she turned her face to the sound’s origin.

“Child, are you alright?”

“Oh, Toga, thank Kami-sama you are here! I didn’t know what to do!”

The massive dog opened his red eyes, turned his head to the intruder, and snarled, moving his paw to keep Kagome from escaping. Toga snarled in return, showing him who the dominant male was. Noticing that his chosen female was scared, Sesshomaru began to lick her. His big tongue ran from her bosom up to her head. Kagome stood still, scared by the whole situation, trying to keep her mind empty of all thoughts of death, especially the ones involving a huge white dog swallowing her alive. She closed her eyes and listened as Toga gave her instructions on how to remove herself from under a very overprotective and huge dog demon.

“Kagome, you are doing very well. He is aware of your fear and is trying to sooth you; let him do as he wants. That is not Sesshomaru, his youkai has taken over, and he seems quite fond of you. He won’t harm you, my dear. It will soon be over; he will go back to his humanoid form shortly.”

Kagome, between licks, managed to formulate another question.

“How long will it take until he goes back to his other form?”

Toga shrugged his shoulders, much to Kagome’s dismay.

“It’s hard to say, but I can tell he is exhausted. I don’t know what happened to him to make him like this, but I can tell it was big by the scent I picked up.”

Toga walked to his son’s desk and went through the papers scattered on it, trying to find the cause of his distress. A whining sound made him raise his head to where the couple laid, and he held back a grin.

Sesshomaru had recovered his humanoid form and was lying on top of Kagome; he had passed out again. Kagome’s eyes were wide open as Sesshomaru began to nuzzle her neck, and his chest emitted a purring sound in his dream-like state. Kagome flashed Toga a “help me” look, and Toga could contain his mirth no more.

Chuckling, the older youkai approached his adopted by heart daughter and his slumbering son, and being careful so as to not awake his son, he helped Kagome up and covered his son with his coat. Sesshomaru soon noticed the enticing scent he had been smelling so far was gone and in his dreamy state he frowned, but soon his exhaustion took over, and he fell deep asleep.

A few days had passed since “the office incident,” as they called it. Neither Toga nor Shoja could get a word from Sesshomaru, so they only knew the facts from Kagome, and her word didn’t explain what had caused Sesshomaru’s youkai to come to the surface. Him being a very disciplined warrior, he normally kept his youkai on a tight leash. Both elders were worried about Sesshomaru; something was happening if he lost control of his beast for the first time since he had learned how to control it when he was but a pup.

Through Kagura, Kagome had learned the truth of Sesshomaru’s feelings; now she knew that he only saw her as a sister. That explained the affection he had showed towards her, always after her life had been threatened, always concerned and affectionate when she had been in danger, like when Naraku almost kidnapped her the night of the party. Perhaps those mind blowing kisses were the way inus showed affection towards the females they considered pack members.

Her desk phone rang, and she forgot all about her thoughts and focused on her work.

He could lie to himself no more; he was an honourable youkai and lies were below him. He pinched the bridge of his nose for the umpteenth time that week and massaged it thoroughly. No, he would not deny his feelings for the ningen anymore. He sighed, he should have known that since the moment he compared her with his Rin that woman would find her way into his heart. Kagome was the only ningen since his little girl that could get into his private space and make him feel comfortable.

He had mistaken her sweetness for weakness, and she had been the only one to confront him when his youkai had taken over, where Kagura had not. Kagura had proven to be a worthless mate for him after all.

There were other clues he had not paid attention to, like her enticing scent, her soft skin, and the way she tasted wonderful when he licked her. He leaned on his chair, placed both hands behind his head and began to think of other places he would like to lick her.

He stood up and shook those thoughts from his mind; there were some things he would have to take care of before he could indulge in those thoughts. He would have to break up with Kagura in the first place and hold true to his heart, and then he would have to court Kagome properly. He picked up the phone and dialled.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Kagome hung up the phone with a smile on her lips. Inuyasha had called again; this time he asked her to have dinner with him. What was it with the Taisho men that warmed her heart?

Shoja had become a grandfather and Toga was a father figure; she just couldn’t help it. She loved them both. Sesshomaru behaved like a big brother, and she was forcing herself to see him that way, burying her growing feelings of affection. Inuyasha confused her; he had never showed any romantic interest towards her until now, and she had to admit, she felt flattered. Where had the brash hanyou she met some years ago gone? The older Inuyasha was childish, but this one was quite a seducer, and so funny too. She couldn’t help the widening of her smile.

Sesshomaru entered the house earlier than usual. He was tired and emotionally drained; never in his life had he questioned his values up to this point. Never before had he felt the need to change his point of view. Not even Rin had done it completely; he had always kept his distance.

He dropped his brief case on the floor and undid his tie; he heard footsteps approaching and turned around to see his father looking at him with concern written all over his face.

“Come son, sit with me and relax.”

“I’m fine, father. I’ll take a shower and go to sleep; it’s been a very tiring week, nothing a long night’s sleep won’t cure.”

Toga ran his clawed hand through his soft white hair. “I believe it will take more than some sleep to solve your problems.”

Sesshomaru raised a brow. “You assume you know what troubles this Sesshomaru, father?”

Toga laughed at his son’s antics; he too had been ruled by pride in his youth. “Come son, I have some drinks prepared waiting for us. We need to talk.”

Sesshomaru followed his father to the library and accepted the drink handed to him. Then he saw how Toga made himself comfortable sitting on the couch, motioning for his eldest son to sit beside him. Sesshomaru obeyed and sat down. They stayed in silence for a while before the eldest male finally spoke.

“I know how you feel.”

Sesshomaru arched his finely sculpted brow in confusion.

“Is that so?”

“I used to be like you when I was young. I was above everything and everyone; nothing could move me, much less anyone. You must understand that the rules of our society are much like what they used to be when I was betrothed to your mother. Love didn’t matter in order to choose a mate, as long as she had the proper education and came from a powerful family. In some lucky cases, love came with time, but that never happened with us.” Toga took a sip from his glass of whiskey and noted his son’s distress. “Don’t get me wrong, we learned to live with each other, to respect one another. At that time, I thought I loved her. When she died, I was very sad, as I said, I thought I loved her.” He paused, looking at some point before him.

Sesshomaru, although listening to his father’s confession, had his eyes focused on the carpet before him. He was intrigued by what his father had to tell him, but at the same time felt uncomfortable, he wasn’t sure he wanted to know so much about him. “What made you change your mind, father?”

“Everything was just going fine, I had all that I needed, or that’s what I thought; your mother had been deceased for some time, and I hadn’t found another female worthy of becoming my mate. You know, son, I always lived in a world where everything fit; there was a path traced for me, and I just had to follow it, but one day things didn’t make sense anymore. I didn’t like what I had become, a lonely being. The next morning, I left the palace looking for nothing in particular; I just knew I was searching for something and that I would find what it was at the right time.”

“Grandfather told me when you disappeared that you had gone on a very important mission; he never told me it was this serious.” They remained in silence for a while. “Did you find what you were looking for?” Toga raised his head and silently nodded. “Would you have come back if you hadn’t found it?

Toga stood up and took a few steps before turning thoughtfully towards his son bringing his hands to sift through his white hair. “Probably not.”

“And what did you find?”

“A different world, one full of emotions, full of love, passion, forgiveness, and compassion. I never knew it existed until I found it, and when I did I was sure I could never live without it.”

“Where did you go to find it?”

Toga looked at his stubborn son for a while and then gave a tiny smile.

“Of course, how could I forget Izayoi.” Sessomaru moved to turn around and leave the room but his father stopped him.

“Don’t be mistaken, my son, emotions don’t make us weak.”

Sesshomaru snarled at his father, “Do you forget what happened in my office not more than a week ago? Wasn’t that weakness?” Toga approached his frustrated looking son and patted his shoulder.

“I still don’t know what made you turn into your true self, perhaps you could indulge me?” Sesshomaru sighed dejectedly and allowed his father to sit beside him on the couch.

“I’m feeling something I should not for the most inappropriate being, and I don’t know what to do. The only thing that makes it better is the fact that I recognized my feelings, but that’s all.”

“And does she know what you feel?”

Sesshomaru merely shook his head.

“What I felt for Izayoi never made me weak. On the contrary, I felt I could master anything.” But Sesshomaru was already heading towards the door, not wishing to hear anything else his father deemed important for him to know.

“Sesshomaru.” His son stopped with his hand on the brass door handle. “Give Kagome a chance; you know, she reminds me so much of Izayoi and Rin. They were just as loving and cheerful.”

Sesshomaru, stupefaction written all over his face, turned around to meet his father’s amused expression. “How…?”

His father chuckled. “You are beginning to become an open book. Love does this to people, you know?” Sesshomaru brought his eyes to the floor, trying to blink away his stupor. How had his father known? Was it that obvious? “Perhaps you should rest, my son. You look tired.” Sesshomaru simply nodded and left the room.

Inuyasha drove the car to his family’s mansion and parked in front of the main door. He opened Kagome’s door and gently held his hand for her to take it, helping her out of the car. His eyes had a different light and beheld a shade of dark amber; Kagome couldn’t help but notice how handsome he was.

The young male looked at his friend, who now held his heart in a different manner, and loved the rosy tint on her cheeks. He put his arm around her shoulder to keep her from the night chill.

“I had a wonderful night Inuyasha.”

“Me too, Kags.”

“Do you want to come inside?”

“Thanks Kags, but I can’t. I have a very important meeting tomorrow morning, and I need my rest, but I’ll call you tomorrow.”

She nodded her agreement and gave him a sweet smile that had the young male wishing he had agreed to stay. His darker amber colored eyes captured her chocolate ones, his hand posed on her cheek while the other still held her hand. Their noses nearly touched as they leaned in, and Inuyasha moved his hand behind her neck while their lips caressed in a long, sweet kiss.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Kagome closed the door behind her and leaned on it for a while. Inuyasha’s kiss had been soft and tender, but it had lacked something. She remembered how Sesshomaru’s kiss had been; it had made her feel passion, and that’s what she wanted from her boyfriend’s kisses. She brought her hands to cover her face; she was doomed. Would she always compare any future kisses she may receive from others to the one shared with Sesshomaru? Perhaps it wasn’t such a good idea to live in the same house with him and have to see him every day.

She took her shoes off and began to walk up the stairs towards her room; she needed some rest. Suddenly, she heard a snarl and something hard pressed her against a wall. She closed her eyes and braced herself for what was coming.
