The Better Man

A/N: Commenting on a review here. As far as Kagome calling him by his first/given name. She calls him by the name he offered, which is what all his friends call him. And at this point she is still nothing more than a friend and not his love interest as of yet. Kagome is also polite and wouldn't call him by his given name unless he lets her know it's okay.

Chapter Eighteen


"That was wonderful, did you see the look on his face right before that thing tore his head off?"

Yusuke looked down at the strange girl, lifting an eyebrow. She'd been tagging along with him all week, going wherever he went. Which was usually to the arcade but today he'd wanted to see the horror flick that was out. He'd asked Keiko to go see it with him when it first came out but she had refused. If they went to the movies it was always to see some crappy foreign film. The girl had jumped at the chance to go out with him again and she'd never been to the movies. He hadn't told her what they were going to see, thinking she'd try to get him to change his mind. Instead she had sat there engrossed in the carnage the entire time.

The only time she had seemed scared was when a wolf had been shown. Which he didn't understand, she didn't seem to be scared of anything else. His eyes roamed over her face, her cheeks were flushed from excitement. She was very pretty and easy to get along with, not to mention she seemed to like the same things as himself. He was just glad that she hadn't tried to drag him off shopping.

"Thank you for taking me Yusuke, I enjoyed it." Rin smiled up at him. He didn't seem as upset as he had last week.

"No problem, just don't ask me to take you shopping."

"Whats that?"

Oh yeah, his kind of girl. He laughed as she actually waited for an explanation. "Don't worry about it, its best if you don't know."

"Um, okay if you say so." She began humming to herself as they walked down the street. It stopped when she felt his tense up beside her. Her eyes lifted to see a group of guys that had to be the same age as Yusuke coming towards them. None of the six looked friendly as they approached.

"Hey look it's Yurameshi and he's got a new girlfriend." The one on the far left spoke first.

Yusuke's pride demanded that he keep walking towards them and not take a detour. If they started he'd kick their ass. His fist already itched to punch one of them. He sighed when their path was blocked by the six, didn't look like he was getting by without a fight.

"You sure thats his girlfriend? She doesn't have any tits and she's kind of plain too."

Rin heard the comment and reacted, no one insulted her like that. She balled up her fist slamming it into his nose. The sound of breaking cartalidge was heard and a scream of pain. She felt a hand grab her elbow and saw that it was the ugliest of the bunch.

"You're bitch is fiesty Yurameshi."

"Yeah so how bout getting your hands off." Yusuke punched him across the face causing him to let go of Rin. She kicked the one heading for them with a knife, her foot collided with his groin.

Rin wasn't suprised to see the others already on the ground. All of them were groaning, "Guess you didn't need my help." She felt a hand wrap around her ankle, she kicked the arm it belonged to.

"Lets get out of here."

"Okay," She looked down at the one with the broken nose then down at her chest. "Do you think I have no tits?"

The question shocked him and caused him to pause. "Hell I don't know, let me feel then I'll tell you."

She blushed at him, "I've seen you looking at them so don't try that. You aren't touching them." She began walking away, "Not yet anyways." It was said in a whisper.

'What the hell did she just say?'


The three men stood on the edge of the cliff looking over the Makai. The leader smiled when he smelt his prey, the bitch would not escape this time. She should have known better than to mate. Before it had been impossible to track her. Now her mate's scent lingered on her, making her easy to find. "Let's go guys." They raced down the mountain side and began following the scent.

The night was quiet as Kagome layed on the bed thinking. She still found it hard to look at Kuwabara without remembering what she'd done. She wasn't sure what had made her do it but it had seemed right. Not to mention the fact that she'd been wanting to do it for awhile now. He hadn't mentioned it either, probably trying to forget it even happened.

He had a girlfried that he loved, no matter how far he'd been with her. The fact still remained that his heart belonged to someone else. The last thing he needed was someone hitting on him, some desperate girl trying to get his attention.

Okay she wasn't desperate, if she just wanted attention she could get it from Kurama. He still flirted and went out of his way to speak to her. Why couldn't she have liked the one that was available? Once again she was aiming for someone that was already in love with another woman. All week he'd been depressed and she wanted to comfort him but didn't think it would be welcomed.

Rin came running into the room and jumped on the bed. "What are you doing?"

"Thinking, not everyone enjoys video games."

"Yeah, the games are okay."

Kagome turned her head, "Okay? Then why the hell do you spend so much time on that couch playing games with Yus.. Oh, now I see."

"See what?" Rin blushed at her.

"You like Yusuke, he has a girlfriend you know. Even if Keiko is angry with him, they might as well be together."

"I thought she didn't want him anymore." Rin was confused now. What was this break up thing then. If the girl still wanted him then why hadn't she been around lately? Yusuke had been spending time here the last three weeks alone. He'd spent almost the whole week with her also.

"Hmm, how can I explain this. It's kind of like the situation with Kuwabara, they are just spending time apart. Even if they aren't together it doesn't mean they don't still want the other person. I've seen both guys with their other halves and we don't stand a chance Rin. I know you probably don't wanna hear it but I'm not going to lie to you. Yusuke loves Keiko and Kuwabara loves Yukina enough said. Try not to get too attached, you're just going to get hurt in the end."

"So are you saying he will never like me that way?"

"I could lie to you Rin but I won't. I've seen them together and they love each other and if you set your sights on him it won't end well. Then again I can't tell you how to feel and I know sometimes you can't help how you feel. I know that firsthand. Just be careful, don't get hurt if theres a way to avoid it."
