Chapter 18
Kagome climbed out of the well wearily. ‘I’m finally home, home where I belong’, she said to herself. It hadn’t been too long ago, when she came home with Sesshomaru, and felt that life could never be better. Now, all her hopes for that were completely and utterly shattered. She knew that things were probably better this way, now that she as back to where she belonged, and Sesshomaru could go back to what life was like before.
‘This is it, my chance to get Kagome back. I’m the only other person besides her, who can travel through the well’, Inuyasha thought to himself. He paced back and forth in front of Kouga’s cave, driving the wolf crazy. ‘Stupid mutt! Stop pacing around! You’re driving me crazy!’, Kouga yelled. ‘Shut up! You’re forgetting that YOU were the one who let Kagome get kidnapped’, Inuyasha retorted.
Even though Inuyasha knew that Kagome had just gone back to the future, he felt that the wolf deserved to think tit was his fault. Inuyasha sniffed the air and caught the scent of another dog demon. ‘Damnit, why does Sesshomaru have to be at the well? It’s not like he can get through or anything. He’d better not be waiting there for her, because that just has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. No… He has to be there for another reason…’/
Kouga stared at the half demon, not knowing what was going through his mind. Inuyasha had been lost in his own world ever since he found out that Kagome had disappeared. ‘Does he know something that I don’t? He has to be hiding something… I need to find out…’. Before Kouga could do anything, Inuyasha ran off without saying anything else.
Home. As soon as she had entered the house, her mother had treated her like royalty. Everywhere she went, her mother was behind her, cleaning up after her, making sure everything was alright and that Kagome was comfortable. By the end of the day, Kagome couldn’t take it any more, so she tried to ask her mother what was going on.
‘Mom…. I appreciate all you’ve done for me, but I can manage on my own! You don’t need to do everything for me. Somehow, I think you’re hiding something from me though…’, Kagome questioned. ‘Kagome… I don’t know if you realized this, but… I’m pretty sure…’.
‘I’m what?’, Kagome asked intently. ‘…Pregnant’, her mother whispered.
Kagome couldn’t beliee what she heard. It wasn’t possible… Kikyo had poisoned her so it wasn’t possible that she was carrying a child. ‘No,mom… that’s not possible! I was poisoned…. And it’s not possible for me to be pregnant…’.
‘’Kagome, I don’t know how it’s possible, but you have all the signs of being pregnant. You’re starting with the morning sickness, where you empty your stomach every morning, you’re going to the washroom constantly, and your breasts are starting to fill in… It says it all. Although it’s not happening at the same time as a human’s pregnancy would, all the signs of mother hood are appearing’, Kagome’s mother told her.
The demoness was lost of r words. She knew that if she thought about it anymore, her heart would break all over again. ‘oh mother… I don’t know what to do…’.
Sesshomaru stood at the well, still clenching the cloth in his hands. Kagome was pregnant. He knew that the child was his, and that sooner or later, he would have to take responsibility of the child. He didn’t want the baby, and he knew that Kagome wouldn’t want the child either, so it would probably be for the best if she got rid of the child.
He could sense the half-demon approaching, but he did not do anything in reaction to it. ‘Sesshomaru! What did you do to Kagome?!’.
There was the sound of a sword being drawn and a half-demon’s wild yelling, but Sesshomaru could tell that there was something wrong with himself. He didn’t react to anything, not even Inuyasha’s hopeless existence in his presence. As soon as Inuyasha ran up to him, he dodged the attack and landed a few feet behind Inuyasha.
‘Tell her that I want no part in the child’s life’. With that, Sesshomaru walked off into the woods, disappearing from Inuyasha’s sight.
Inuyasha stood there, stunned by what he heard. ‘I want no part in the ‘child’s’ life’… ‘What the hell does he mean…? Well… I sure as hell am not going to get any answers by standing here… I’ll ask Kagome… I need to find out what is going on with those two’.
Sesshomaru knew that he wouldn’t be able to get through the well, so the only way to reach Kagome was through the half-demon. He didn’t know why, but there was a dull ache in his heart and he seemed to be at a loss of breath every time he though of her. ‘It’s over… She will mate with Inuyasha, and leave me alone. Yes… That’s what it will be like. It’s the way things are supposed to be’.
It had been a long time since Inuyasha had hit the ground that hard, but this time it wasn’t because of the necklace. ‘What the hell?!?’, he yelled into the ground. He couldn’t get through the well. He had jumped into it, but only to be greeted by dirt. ‘Sesshomaru must have done something to the well… I knew it! That bastard went and sealed the well… When I get my hands on that bastard, I’m going to tear him apart!’.
Kagome stood in front of the mirror, trying to hide her demon features. Tears would come to her eyes and threaten to come out ever time she looked in the mirror and thought of Sesshomaru, but Kagome was determined to keep them away. She knew that her mother had called Yuka and Eri to come over and cheer her up, but at the moment, she really needed some time to think things over alone.
She stared at her reflection in the mirror, making sure that she had hidden everything. She knew that her heart was still waiting for the day where Sesshomaru would come and ask for her to go back, but her mind though otherwise. ‘I guess… I’ll just have to wait and see what happens…’.
‘Lord Sesshomaru! Oh, Lord Sesshomaru! I have bad news for you!’, Jaken yelled as he saw Sesshomaru arrive at the castle. Sesshomaru nodded for him to continue, ‘Lord Sesshomaru, the remaining lord of the Northern and Southern lands, Ryo, is planning to start a war against you, mi’lord! He says that he is doing this to avenge his brother’. ‘Hn… Is that all, Jaken?’.
‘Eh, Mi’lord, the elders are here and they say that thye have something very important to discuss with you….’, Jaken reported. ‘Where are they?’, Sesshomaru asked. He had expected that they would visit soon, and knew that it had something to do with Kagome and his demon. ‘They are in the living room’.
‘Jaken, tell the soldiers to get into their battle uniforms. I will tend to them once I’m finished meeting with the elders’. ‘Yes Sesshomaru-sama!’.
As he entered the study, he saw the heads of the elders turn, and could tell immediately that they were not happy. ‘Sesshomaru. Abandoning your child? Not very responsible, now is it?’. Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes, and merely replied, ‘There is no child. Kagome was poisoned. I’m sure that you are all aware of that’.
‘Hmph… Yes, but her miko powers had purified the poisons long ago. Did you not know that?’. Sesshomaru could feel his heart clench, but merely replied, ‘Yes, I did know that. But I’m sure you have other matters to deal with. This isn’t the first time a Lord has un-mated the Lady’.
‘The other reason we came here was regarding your demon side… You will not be able to defeat Ryo without it… But of course, the choice is yours…’. With that, a mist appeared, and they were all gone. Sesshomaru closed his eyes, willing the stabbing pain in his heart to disappear, though it refused to leave.
‘Lord Sesshomaru! The fool of a half-demon has come! He keeps accusing you of ‘sealing the well’… Or something of the sorts! I tried to dispose of him, but he would not…’. ‘Jaken. I will deal with him. Get the army into the planning room’, Sesshomaru ordered.
‘WIMPY DEMON!!! GET OUT HERE AND FIGHT! I KNOW YOU SEALED UP THE WELL, SO YOU’D BETTER FIX IT OR ELSE I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!’, Inuyasha yelled. Sesshomaru was in no mood to have to deal with Inuyasha, but his heart was paining him to no ends, and he wanted nothing more to stop the pain. ‘I need… Kagome…’.
Kagome silently sat on the ledge of the well, staring down into the darkness. ‘Kagome… You sure have messed up your life…’, she said to herself. It seemed as though no matter what she did, the gods were plotting against her, and would not let her find happiness.
‘Kagome… Gods… Please bring her back… I admit it. I’ve fallen in love with the most beautiful, loyal, smart, and… perfect one of all… I won’t ask for anything more. Just to have her by my side and make the pain disappear…’.
Tears fell into the well as they rolled down her pale cheeks. ‘Trust your heart, Kagome. If your heart belongs there, don’t run away from it. Go to where you feel most at home. Face your fears, and take bold steps into the future’.
Kagome turned around and saw her mother, smiling fondly upon her. ‘Go on! I expect to see my grandchild born from love, and grow up with happy memories with his or her amazing parents’. The demoness quickly whispered, ‘Thanks for everything…’, before jumping into the well.
