Chapter 18
Shikon no Tama.
The sun was beginning to set over the land, vibrant colors of orange, red and streaks of violet stretched out in the sky.
A large black raven landed on the blue-green leaves of a Japanese maple tree and its full summer bloom. The large bird plumed his black shiny feathers; annoyed he could not find the power that was calling him, beckoning him towards the castle.
He flew into the sill of the open window. The raven could feel a tinge, but the source wasn’t in the room. Instincts, screaming for him to venture further inside the room, not caring another demon was inside sleeping.
When he was about to jump into the room from his cobblestone perch, the door unsuspectingly flew open, and the startled bird flew out the window cawing. Yet, the Raven didn’t go far, and the source of the power he felt wouldn’t let him leave. Soon more of his kind followed, feeling the immense pull from the unseen clout; sitting on the limbs of the sturdy trees ominously, as the sun settled behind the mountain; darkening the fields and the skies.
The moment that Sesshomaru left the room, he roared, for the General of his guards. They waited, until, a large dog demon approached the angry Lord, bowing submissively. “You called my Liege.”
Sesshomaru didn’t even look down, at the elder dog demon when he spoke, “you will find the two who were guarding my mates door and bring them to me, alive. I don’t care if you have to send half my soldiers. I want the grounds, and palace checked. If you find their stench, follow it and send a scout to send word. Now leave!”
“Yes my lord,” General Akimitsu replied, and then scurried out to do his mission. Afraid to fail him, for the look upon Sesshomaru’s face, was an unspoken wrath, for the two soldiers he needed to find, and he really did not want to be on his list as well. Running back towards the room, he caught the scent of his bounty. Growling he resumed quickly, only to gather reinforcements; he new that this would be no easy task.
Pleased that his order now placed Sesshomaru turned towards his brother, “ you and Koga will make sure that Kaede is safe, Kagome and I will catch up.”
Inuyasha wanted to protest, but knew better, right now Sesshomaru was in charge no matter how bad he wanted to stay, his brother was alpha, and their was danger present. That didn’t mean he did not disapprove, oh he did, but Kagome living was his number one priority.
Sesshomaru approached his mate, extending his hand, watching the two demons scurry away leaving him alone with Kagome, yet he did not miss the angry, look from his brother. He shook his head; he did not have time to quarrel with him. He could only hope that Inuyasha would make it safely to Kaedes to protect her.
Returning his attention to his mate, his eyes narrowed, worry strung upon his face. She looked weak, and could see the fatigue in her eyes. He could hear her heart beating franticly, almost seeing the rhythmic dance of her pulse along her neck. Her white gown did nothing to cover her from hungry eyes while he could see her chest rapidly rising and falling with each deep breath she took. He looked at her his eyes filled with concern, why was she behaving like her life was being threatened. “ Kagome?” She didn’t answer, she looked un-phased. He sniffed the air, hoping he would be able to smell danger, a trader lurking in the dark halls of his palace. Yet nothing; he asked again, “Kagome, my love what is wrong?”
His voice sounded muffled, she could barely hear anything. All she could hear was a high pitch ringing sound, and a pull she had never felt before. Kagome blinked her eyes, annoyed with the deep humming sound. She just needed to find the source. Her hands and body trembled with unknown fear. Why did she not feel this way inside her room? She sure felt it now. She knew what was pulling her, calling her with an urge she never felt before. It was the jewel, and she could feel the intensity of its influence.
Sesshomaru just stared at her, confused, he grabbed her arms roughly, shaking his mate, who now looked comatose. “Kagome…Kagome come back to me,” he pleaded.
Kagome wanted to answer, her mind was focused, distracted but in tuned; unfortunately she felt as if she just stepped into one of the Twilight Zone episodes…Literally. She blinked, trying to focus on the rough hands now jerking her fatigued frame. She could feel the pain erupting from where the orb was violently ripped out her body. In the back of her mind, she knew in what direction to take, and needed to go soon. Without answering she fled towards Kaedes room, she didn’t know why or what was forcing her to go; her legs lead her and Kagome only hoped she would have the answers when she arrived at her destination.
Sesshomaru followed closely behind her, neither one noticing the trees that now were crammed with birds or the noisy calls they were making; his only concern was Kagome.
Naraku stretched his arms out above his head and yawned; he turned over to find Kanna gone. ‘I didn’t tell her she could leave.’ Feeling angry he decided to get out of bed, her scent still lingered on his sheet of their prior events. Putting his pants on he followed her scent. He would surly punish her for disobeying him.
He looked out the window, just out of curiosity only to see his carriage await him, loaded with trunks; filled with his belongings. He knew he needed to leave soon, for the brothers would surly send troops to eradicate his very existence. He growled, every plan that he approached failed him, Kagura failed him, and he failed himself, by not finishing the mighty Sesshomaru.
His thoughts weighed heavy, now he would exact his revenge, slowly. First, he would destroy the wolves that lived up north, and he still planned to take Kagome away from her beloved mates only to make her his queen. Along with the powerful jewel, that he so craved to be in his possession; and he would keep Kanna on the side. He smiled at the iniquitous thought coursing through his twisted mind. A sadistic smirked graced his handsome face, “now where is that bitch,” he said as he made his way toward the grand doors that would lead him out of his room.
Approaching the wooden doors, he could hear a feminine voice outside the hall, along with two other males. He stood still, listening and sniffing the air for a familiar scent. He growled, he smelled Kanna, but also smelled his enemy. Opening the door, he now looked down at a startled Kanna, and two demons bowed before him. “ What the hell is going on?” Naraku screamed.
Inuyasha knocked on Kaede’s door, waiting for her to respond. He looked over at the wolf with envious eyes. “You know Koga,” he growled. He was pissed that all this was happening, and wanted to take his anger out on something anything, the wolf prince was the perfect pawn. He knocked again; if she wasn’t answering soon he was going to bust the door down. “Its still not polite to barge in on someone’s mate.” He crossed his arms impatiently.
Koga snickered, “well where were you?” he retorted.
Inuyasha his eyes narrowed evilly at his womanizing friend, “ I was in the hall around the corner waiting for you to not go into my mates room,” he snorted. His ears twitched, “ ah hell, Kaede you old hag you better fucking open this door…I’m counting to three and then I am breaking it down.”
Koga stood there, he did catch a nice glimpse of the woman he would never have squirming underneath him, not that he would do that to the brothers. He rubbed his chin, remembering the nice punch she left. Staying here for a couple of days had rewarded him with a new found respect, and plenty of ladies to court. “Well my dear friend, I didn’t smell you or I would have followed you, but unfortunately there was no one around when I showed up, and I heard something. I still don’t know; it almost smelt like a bird.”
“A bird?” he questioned, then began counting, “ one…two…three!” with that last count he busted the door down, only to find Kaede unconscious on the floor with her hands fisted at her side. He immediately rushed over to her. “Shit…now what?” he looked up at the wolf silently hoping he had answers. Watching the wolf shrug his shoulders, he lifted Kaede up and placed her on her bed, “ you better live,” he whispered.
Koga just stood there with a wide eye expression, and rushed over to Kaede. He could hear her heartbeat, although faint, but glad to see she would survive. Curiosity weighed his better judgment as he had the urge to open her hands; something tingled inside his very being, and whatever it was, was in her tightly fisted hands. Before he even began to touch her, he smelt, “ Kagome.”
Inuyasha arose from his spot, when he saw the confusion in his mates’ eyes. “Kagome, what’s the matter love.” He could see Sesshomaru behind her, watching her. Inuyasha glanced over to his brother, then at Kagome. “ What the hell is going on here? Why is Kagome acting like this?”
Like Inuyasha, Sesshomaru had no idea, he could only imagine that the jewel was calling her, returning to its rightful owner. He stood silent, observing his mate as she approached Kaede.
Kagome didn’t respond, she continued on until she came to the side of the bed, with Inuyasha by her side, she just ignored him and continued on her task. She opened Kaedes left hand and fetched the pink orb that was the size of a pearl.
The immediate contact between Kagome and the gem was unfathomable. A bright blue light surrounded Kagome; like a transparent blanket. Everyone, except Kaede, stared in awe, as her silver mane flew violently around her lustrous body. Her eyes became silver, for a brief moment then returned to her normal golden hue. Closing her fist around the jewel, she concentrated on calming the power that seemed to have accepted her as its own salvation.
Within seconds, the glowing orb dissipated, and Kagome felt even more powerful, and somewhat complete. She could still feel the tingling in her skin. She didn’t understand any of this, why was fate throwing her another curb ball. She growled slightly feeling uneasy about protecting one that was so powerful.
Both brothers sent her out of her daze, rushing up to her only to embrace. They could also feel the spike in her aura. Yet touching her nothing happened, and understood of her new burden. Sesshomaru rang his claws through her silky hair, “ my love are you okay?”
Kagome had beads of sweat forming on her brow, and her whole body trembled, other than that, she was and would be okay. She nodded her head, “ yes, I’m okay now thank you.” Kagome turned away from her mates and approached Kaede, who was still laying still. Her breathing was normal and she couldn’t help but worried what had happened.
Gripping the orb tightly in her hand, she needed answers, they all needed answers. “Kaede, please wake-up,” Kagome pleaded, hoping to get a response out of the elderly lady. She also noticed that Sesshomaru left the room, “Inuyasha where is your brother going?”
He smiled, “ I think he is going to fetch a healer to look over the old hag.”
“Inuyasha!” she scolded. Inuyasha just shrugged his shoulders.
Miroku walked around, looking for the servant Sango. He couldn’t find her anywhere, and grew aggravated. He liked her, a lot, but he could never be with her until his curse was released. “Damn, Naraku!” he swore. He had also felt a surge of power in the castle; he could not explain what he was feeling he just knew it was there.
In all the travels throughout the year, he’d never been so consumed by something so unnatural. He had exercised many sprits, poltergeists, and other lesser demons throughout the land, only to make his living. Miroku had seen the devastation of Naraku’s minions along his travels; villages destroyed, family’s dead, and children orphaned. He shook his head trying not to think about the screams, or the smell of decaying flesh as he walked along the grand hall, trying to find the source of his discomfort.
Sesshomaru left his mate and his brother; he needed answers to his inquiring mind. Kaede still was unconscious; so, he decided to ask the amorous monk. He hoped Miroku would have the information, which he sought. Catching his scent, he followed down the hall past his mates’ room. Coming around the bend, towards the dining hall, he caught sight of the monk, deep in thought. “ Miroku, your services are needed, follow me.” Sesshomaru did not hesitate, just turned around, and headed back, hoping the monk would be wise and follow.
Miroku didn’t have time to be formal when the Lord approached him. ‘I wonder what he wants with me,’ he gulped hoping that he did not come on to the wrong women again, and Sesshomaru was leading him to his death. He shook is head negatively, ‘no he wouldn’t kill me I did nothing wrong.’ He mused. “Lord Sesshomaru, tell me did you feel an unnatural presence earlier?”
Sesshomaru stopped walking and turned his head towards the monk. ‘ Maybe just maybe he does know about the jewel.’ Without answering Miroku, he continued on his pace down the dim lighted hall.
Miroku could feel his heart quicken, why didn’t he answer me? Why did he always meet the unfriendly ones?
Kagome paced back and forth, she was worried that Kaede wasn’t coming to, and this was all her fault. If she had defeated Kagura then the jewel wouldn’t have been ripped out of her body. “Are you sure she is fine?” she asked, mostly concerned. By instinct alone, she knew that Kaede would be okay; she just needed to have reassurance.
Inuyasha approached her, “love I swear to you that she will be fine, she just needs rest. I have a feeling that orb, did something to her.”
Kagome and Koga looked confused, “what do you mean,” Kagome said.
Just before Inuyasha had a chance to answer, a bird flew into the open window and went straight for Kagome. The raven never stood a chance as Inuyasha made quick work out of the deranged bird. Feathers floated around landing by her feet, as blood quickly splattered on the walls and now a crimson puddle was on the floor where the decapitated bird lay.
“What the fuck,” Inuyasha snarled, no sooner had he killed the bird, several more flew through the window, “damn!” he swore. Flexing his claws, the kill was easy; even Koga took out a few. The cackle from the birds ceased and there was now a bloody mess on the marble flooring. Closing the wooden shutters he growled in triumph, “there that should take care of that.” However, that didn’t stop the birds from trying to get into the room. With a thud, they could hear the birds, trying to break through the wood.
Kagome frowned, and tightened her fist around the pulsing jewel. “It’s the Jewel Inuyasha, there after the source of its power, I know it I can feel the power as well, why hasn’t it affected you?” She couldn’t look at the mass of birds that lay now lay still on the floor. The room now reeked of death and she needed to leave soon, before she became ill.
Inuyasha licked his claws, and looked up at his mate, “because, my love I don’t need extra power, I’m strong enough,” Inuyasha chuckled, as he cracked his knuckles together in emphasizing his point.
Koga just stood their silent, he could feel the jewel, almost calling him earlier, he would have grabbed the gem, but Kagome came in and now she has it her possession. Still they needed to know, “ I felt it before you came in the room, Lady Kagome; I too wanted the influence of the Jewel.”
The closer Sesshomaru walked toward the room where Kaede was his nose was twitching; he could smell blood and a lot of it. With no regards to the monk behind him, he ran faster than the speed of light, he could hear perfectly well and knew that something awry was happening inside the room.
When Sesshomaru walked in, passing the broken door, he could see a bloodied mass of carcasses soaked in a red puddle of blood, and from the smell, they were fresh. “What the hell is going on here?” he questioned, it was very unlike him to swear.
Kagome and Inuyasha both felt their ears flatten, with the powerful roar, from the mighty lord, they immediately lowered their heads in submission, “my love, it’s the jewel, they want the jewel I now acquire.”
“What is this about a jewel, my lady?” Miroku inquired, as he stepped on the broken door. He didn’t know if he was out of line, by speaking up, again he found himself stared down by four demons. ‘This isn’t my day,’ he frowned at the thought.
Inuyasha approached him, “what do you know about this thing my mate has?”
Miroku smirked, “well it’s called the Shikon no Tama.”
“The Jewel of four souls,” Sesshomaru stated.
“Yes that’s right, the jewel is made up of the four elements: aramitama, megimetama, kushimetama, and sakimetama.” Miroku placed his hands together almost in prayer.
“You mean this damn thing is made of souls, from courage, friendship, wisdom and love.” Inuyasha growled, again crossing his arms over his chest. He was aggravated to say the least; that the monk was speaking in riddles. “ Why the hell would it be made of that? And who the fuck made it?”
“Inuyasha!” Kagome growled, “you better be nice.”
Inuyasha snarled, he didn’t like this, the whole thing was just plain eerie.
Miroku sighed, rubbing his temples, “my lord it was said to be only a legend, but I guess that is not the case.”
“Quit fucking stalling, who made the Jewel?” Inuyasha snarled, baring his fangs.
“Midoriko a great priestess made the jewel Lord Inuyasha; she was at war with a hoard of demons, and it’s said that she fought for seven days and seven nights until the demons merged into one. However, Midoriko sacrificed her life, and placed her own soul in along with the demons creating the jewel. She is said to live there still inside the orb, and is still fighting the demons within. The legend also states, that a wish could be made, as long as it is a selfless one; it will also help the weak, become stronger.”
“Well, how in the hell did it get inside me,” Kagome stated, it really wasn’t a question.
Miroku scrunched his brows together, deep in thought, “honestly, I really don’t have a clue.” He could feel a headache coming on and just wanted to be done, yet curiosity weighed his better judgment, “lady Kagome, my I see this Jewel?”
Kagome opened her hand; the pink orb lay dormant for the time being, which she was relieved; the tingling sensation was becoming quite annoying.
“May I?” Miroku asked, ignoring the snarls that were coming from her mate. He approached her slowly, reaching out his hand he pulled back immediately, the jewel rejected him, as little lights almost like lightning shout out of the orb, giving him a shock of his life. He gripped his hand, yet his face still had a curious vigor. “Interesting,” he said.
Another loud thud, smacked against the wooden frames, the birds were not ceasing. Kagome closed her hand again, she also felt the shock from the orb, yet the jewel accepted her, and they all noticed.
Sesshomaru placed his clawed hand over Kagome’s fist, embracing her, “ my love you look tired,” he paused then looked at his brother, “Inuyasha, take Kagome to our chambers, I will stay here along with Miroku and Koga, to keep watch over Kaede.”
When they left the room Miroku spoke, “my lord, I do believe that the jewel needs to be purified; it wont be just birds, that will seek its power.”
Sesshomaru nodded in agreement, “no monk you are right, I feel Naraku wants it as well.”
