Epilogue:

Three months later…

Miroku shoved his hands in his pockets as he followed Sango up the stairs to her apartment. All in all, the evening had been a success. He’d picked Sango up at her place at eight o’clock and treated her to dinner at one of the best restaurants in town. The conversation at dinner had, however, gotten a bit tense. Not that he could blame her. Sango, in true form, was not letting him forget anything that had happened. She was, however, allowing him to redeem himself. She wasn’t making it easy.

She’d even made Inuyasha debase himself before her and take the wrap, no pun intended, for the condoms.

It had been worth it. He’d worked hard the past three months to get to the point that she would allow him to walk her up the front steps of her apartment. Three long months of fingers that itched to touch her hair, but could never get close enough. Of watching her lips when she spoke and longing to kiss them, but never being given even the slightest indication that she wanted him to. Ninety-one days, 23 hours, and 47 minutes of hearing her laughter and aching to be the real cause of her joy.

But here he was, finally, step by painful step being lead up to her front door, the smell of her vanilla perfume guiding him like some phantom hand. He watched in ecstasy as she fumbled through her purse for the key and noticed the slight shake as she pulled them out. Something low in his belly tightened as he watched her slide the key into the lock and turn it.

She stopped suddenly and glanced nervously in his direction. She drew in a sharp breath as she straightened up to stand proudly before him, a weak smile playing on her lips. “I guess this is goodnight,” she said.

He just nodded.

“Thank you for dinner. It was lovely,” she said lamely.

“It was my pleasure.”

She nodded, as if that settled something for her and then turned to open the door. Miroku took a step backward down the step to give her more room. She stopped, the door half open and looked at him, a frown marring her brow as if she were puzzling something out. She opened her mouth to speak and then shut it abruptly.

“You want to-” She frowned and looked at his feet. “*Attack of the Mole Men* is on tonight.” She eyed him cautiously.

He nodded. “That’s a really bad movie.”

“Terrible,” she added quickly. “One of the worst, I think.”

Seconds passed.

“I could…I could watch it with you, if you want.”

Her head bobbed up and down as she fiddled with the clasp of her purse. Then she turned and hurried into the apartment, leaving the door open for him to follow.

Miroku stared at the open doorway, weighing the consequences silently. Taking one last steadying breath, he stepped over the threshold and closed the door.
