Chapter Four, Part II - Destiny

She couldn't totally block his suffering though. And so he screamed and screamed at the top of his lungs that he hurt, until his voice was hoarse with it. His tears didn't help him either, only further inflaming his already burned skin with its' saltiness. Kagome prayed for the boy's sake that he pass out soon.

Meanwhile, 'he' now paced the lavish office he had settled himself into to wait for her. When a full twenty minutes passed and she didn't show herself, he barked orders to the secretary to page her name every fifteen minutes. That would surely make her notice and hasten her way to him. The secretary hastily complied to do his bidding.

When her name was paged for the 'nth' time, the nurses began to look at each other quite speculatively. Dr. Higurashi didn't seem to notice[or to mind[that she was being paged every fifteen minutes. As much as they admired her for obviously putting her practice above anything else, they also knew how very unwise[and how very dangerous[it was to incur the wrath of those in administration.

Wanting to help her avert that, they suggested that they could fetch another emergency doctor to treat the boy so she could answer the summons. Kagome knew they meant well, but her nerves were already stretched to their breaking point so she told them coolly and quite testily that the boy was brought to her, and was therefore her patient. It wouldn't feel right to abandon her responsibility of treating him completely to another colleague. And whoever it was that was paging her could wait until hell froze over if that was how long she took to patch the boy up. Her patients always came first.

She added sweetly that if they were 'that' concerned, they should go to administration on her behalf and tell them what she said word for word, if they were so inclined. Eager to assist her in any way, they delegated the least faint-hearted of them all to do the job right.

The moment he saw who it was that summoned Dr. Higurashi, however, his courage deserted him. He stammered as he fought to repeat her every word. The thunderous frown that was on 'his' forehead almost made the male nurse wet his pants. He hadn't even finished his exlanation as to why Dr. Higurashi was unavoidably delayed when 'he' stormed out of the room to charge towards the emergency room.

The boy accomodated Kagome just before she finished cleaning his burns. He fainted dead-away, making Kagome sigh in heart-felt relief.

She was slowly slabbing cooling salve to the poor boy's burns when the curtains that served as divider and gave privacy to each cubicle suddenly jerked open.

"Why are you defying me, woman?"

Kagome was sure her heart stopped for a moment. There he stood framed by the green curtains, his long, silky silver hair left unbound as it fell past his shoulders. His eyes were twins of amber daggers that glared openly at her. His arms were crossed in his chest and the shirt that he was wearing along with his jeans was colored red.

~Flashback~

Suddenly, another flashback engulfed her. She was riding on his back as they raced through a deep forest, the red blur of his clothing the only relief from the everlasting green that surrounded them. Her hand tweaked the triangular ears that sat atop his head as he growled his approval at her. She was laughing so hard she forgot to hold on to him and she almost fell if not for his hands catching her butt.

"Inuyasha!"

~End Flashback~

She forgot all about her patient as her hand shook so badly from the need to touch him, to make sure he was real. Even her voice shook when she spoke to him in almost a bare whisper.

"It's you. You're really here,"

She didn't know how he managed to catch her barely audible words, but he did. His tawny eyes softened at once as he gave her a look that could only be described as 'longing'. A tender smile formed in his beautifully sculpted lips as he answered:

"It is me. I've waited for so long to see you again,"

"Yes. It feels like a lifetime,"

He gave a choked laugh, startling her. He closed the curtains behind him to afford them some sense of privacy.

"You don't know the half of it. Do you know me, Kagome?"

She didn't hesitate.

"Yes. You've been in my dreams since I was a child. I used to think you were my 'imaginary' friend,"

He snorted at that.

"Keh! Imaginary, my ass. I used to visit you when you were a child. That's probably why you remember me,"

Even his improper way of speaking seemed so familiar... so natural.

"Visited me how? Mama and Jii-chan would've remembered you, but I bet they don't even know your name,"

"I used to climb up to your room when you're already fast asleep. You would always open your eyes to look at me and smile at me sleepily before going back to sleep. How about you, Kagome? Do you know my name?"

"Inuyasha,"
