Chapter 14, Part I - The Honeymoon
Kagome was led to the castle's east wing with Kaede keeping up constant chatter as they went, and Kagome only nodding her head distractedly whenever the housekeeper looked her way.
The east wing, as Kaede helpfully informed her, housed both the duke's and duchess's private suites with an adjoining sitting room between them.
"His Grace never let this room go stale or unkempt. He ordered us to keep it clean and aired quite frequently. He said his mother would turn in her grave were she to see her rooms abandoned and forgotten, for Lady Izayoi was an organized soul,"
The new duchess's curiosity was piqued.
"Lady Izayoi... is that His Grace's mother's name?"
The housekeeper looked at Kagome oddly, wondering at her choice of reference to her husband but otherwise kept her mouth shut. She nodded in answer to Kagome's inquiry.
"Yes, the late Duchess of Windshire, Lady Izayoi de Monteforte. She was a wonderful woman. It's such a shame she didn't get to see her son's wedding,"
Kagome winced at that, remembering her wedding. And she silently thanked God that her mother-in-law DID get to miss it.
"Have you been with the family long, Kaede?"
Kagome asked in a bid to distract the woman from her wedding details. As it was, Kaede was too busy turning the key on the lock of the door they stopped at.
"Oh yes, Your Grace, that I have. I've gone with the princess-- that's the Lady Izayoi-- when she left our homeland, as I was her handmaiden at the time. When the young master was born, I became his nanny. Now that he's inherited the title, I'm the housekeeper,"
Kaede chuckled to herself at the turn of events regarding her household position as she ushered the new duchess inside the room.
"Forgive us if the room is lacking in your opinion, Your Grace, as we didn't know we were supposed to ready it for your coming. But I'm sure you'll be finding it to your taste. However, if you feel the need to change it, then just say so and I will be glad to be of assistance,"
Kagome looked wonderingly at the room, thinking that whoever did the interior designing definitely had her in mind as everything was the way it was as if she herself designed it. The room was wallpapered by a light shade of purple, making it seem cozy and regal at the same time. The counterpane on the huge bed also sported a purple hue, this time a shade darker to compliment the dark wood of the headboard. The curtains, however, were simply white. The fireplace was already lit, with the cheerful flames adding to the charm of the room. Kagome turned to Kaede, a delighted smile lighting her face.
"I wouldn't change a thing about this room. I absolutely adore it,"
Kaede smiled at the new duchess, pleased that the room was to her liking.
"Is there anything else you require then, Your Grace? I shall have your dinner taken to you in a moment. Don't shake your head at me, Lady Kagome. You have to eat at least something before you take your rest,"
Kaede admonished Kagome softly, not wishing for the new duchess to take ill. Kagome gave her a grateful smile.
"In that case, I shall be awaiting my dinner, Kaede. Before that, though, I find that I am in need of a bath. Can that be arranged?"
In answer, Kaede led her to a door at the right corner of the room. Kagome's eyes widened in pleasant surprise as she saw what was inside. It was her very own private bath! And if her guess was right, those clever pipes installed allowed even for warm water to flow.
"But how--"
"That's the duke's most current innovation here at the castle, Your Grace. Somewhere in his extensive travels he stayed at a house with these exact same amenities. He studied the ins and outs of installing it and before we could blink, he already had three bathrooms outfitted. Your husband is a very clever man,"
Kagome was startled at that revelation.
"Yes, I suppose he is at that,"
She murmured softly to herself, almost forgetting she wasn't alone if not for Kaede clearing her throat soundly.
"Ahem. If you'll excuse me, Your Grace, I'll make sure your dinner will be served in a moment. And I'll also have your trunks unpacked and in your dressing room for your convenience,"
"Thank you, Kaede. I'm sure I'm going to like it here,"
Kaede curtsied before she left Kagome inside the bath. Kagome instantly sought to tug at the ties of her dress, eager to try out what she was sure was going to be a wonderful experience, Thankfully, undressing was an easier thing to do without her maid there. She quickly stripped off every layer of clothing she has on before sinking contentedly into the warm embrace of the water. She sighed deliciously, letting the calming effect of her bath pervade her sore and aching muscles.
