Chapter 17: Who Ever Said You Had To Make A Deal With The Devil?
When the witty battle the witty, only the largest fool shall win - Me, as of this moment.
Kagome strode down the steps, a gleam of mischief in her eye. Stopping one of the villagers near by, she asked where they had last seen their priestess. Smiling at her, they pointed toward the center of the village, and explained that she had last been sent to help a young girl there.
"Arigato!" Kagome thanked them gracefully and again set off on her mission. As she walked along she pondered about how her life had gotten turned all around on her without her consent.
'Last thing I knew, I was at home with my mother and my brother. Then suddenly I was here! With all these strange people... I wish I had my memory back, at least I would know where I stand! I killed a woman, and although they told me she had died a long time ago its still murder... I... I think I'm falling in love with a half -dog demon who I barely know! And to top it all off, I have these weird powers that I can hardly control! I don't even know if I can give Sesshoumaru back his powers...' A few of the villagers she passed looked at her oddly, though whether it was because she was muttering to herself or the weird sequence of expressions crossing her face, she didn't know. 'Ok girl, get a grip. It's not the end of the world! I'll save Inuyasha, and I'll get home somehow...'
Before she knew it she had crossed half the village, and, spotting the older miko shuffling out of a hut nearby, she hurried to catch her.
"Kaede! Kaede, I need your help with something!"
Kaede looked startled for a moment, not expecting the girl to be this far from Inuyasha with Sesshoumaru this close.
"What is it child? I will do what I can to help." The two women turned back towards the way Kagome had previously came from, and Kagome began to explain.
"Well, you see, Kaede... Sesshoumaru managed to poison Inuyasha with his poison claws and I haven't been much of a help to stop the spreading of the poison. I was hoping you could look over him and see if there isn't anything more you can do. If you can't help, I think there may be another way to cure him. Sesshoumaru himself said it could be done." Kagome finished breathlessly, having rushed through the little speech as they walked.
Kaede shot Kagome a glance, filled with much concern and more than a little surprise.
"Ye talked to Sesshoumaru of this? I would think he would not be inclined to help us at all in this matter."
Kagome sighed. "Well... he kind of wanted us to make a deal. Since I took away all his demonic powers, he said if I gave them back that he could get the materials to cure Inuyasha. He said that almost all of the herbs needed were in his territories. But I don't trust him to go off there on his own. He would most likely never come back, leaving Inuyasha to die. I thought of going with him, but there would be nothing to stop him from simply slaughtering me somewhere along the way..." She broke off, hesitant of informing the miko of her plan.
"Go on, child. Ye have obviously thought of some scheme."
Kagome blew a piece of hair out of her eyes before she spoke. "Well... what if we put a subdueing charm on Sesshoumaru as well? Before I give him back his powers and he goes all "grrr" I mean. Does it would on a full-blooded demon?"
Kaede appeared a little taken aback at the suggestion, then composing herself, answered the girl. "Yes... Yes I do believe that it would work..." She nodded her head. "It would only take a moment to prepare..." She nodded her head again, going over the incantations in her mind.
Kagome smiled gratefully. "That would be great! Now I can only hope Inuyasha can hold on a little while longer for us to get the medicine together. Do you think you could help him while I'm gone with Sesshoumaru? I don't know how long this is going to take us... Hopefully with his powers it shouldn't take any more than a day..." The girl chewed on her lip, worrying already about leaving Inuyasha in the state he was in. 'Who're you trying to kid girl? You aren't just falling for him, you're already there!'
They shuffled on in silence for a moment, Kagome's heart racing where her feet could not, out of respect for the older woman, carry her. 'I hope Inuyasha's doing ok...' She looked up to the sky, and suddenly an image of a black haired Inuyasha came into her mind. 'What the heck? I've seen Inuyasha human only once, and his head was never in my lap...' She heard a snippet of his rumbling voice through her head. '"Kagome... You smell good..."' And the memory was gone. Kagome growled in frustration. 'I need to remember! I need to get home! Mom and Souta are probably worrying about me!' A horrible thought overcame her. 'What if they don't know about this world? What if they don't know where I went!? Oh god! They would be worried sick!'
"Kaede? Do you know if I ever told my parents about me being here?" Kagome asked hesitantly.
Kaede broke out of her own thoughts. "Why, yes I believe you did. Inuyasha himself met your mother..."
Kagome breathed a sigh of relief. "So they must know I'm here now. Hopefully they won't worry too much..." She broke off as they reached the shrine steps. 'Ok girl, here we go, time to face the dragon.' "Oh, Kaede. I think it would be best not to tell Sesshoumaru what we're doing. He may be stripped of his powers, but he's still strong physically." She chewed her lip again.
Kaede nodded knowingly, and concentrated on climbing the steps. Her old legs weren't what they used to be.
Reaching the hut they saw Miroku sitting outside, his arms folded and watching Sesshoumaru closely. Sesshoumaru himself stood stoically, ignoring the monk.
"Ahh, Kaede! It is good that you have come. Inuyasha is still fighting on, but who knows how long he may last..." He shook his head sadly.
Kaede hurried inside the hut, followed closely by Kagome.
Inuyasha lay on the cot as before tossing slightly, his cheeks flushed red and sweat rolling down his brow. His eyes remained closed, but he sniffed the air and relaxed, smelling Kagome. Sango, who had been sitting with him, nodded and left the hut. Of course, seconds later there was the sound of a resounding slap, followed by the thump and jingle of a monk hitting the ground. And the addition of a disdainful sniff mixed in. Immediately followed by the rupturing of the poor perverted monk's eardrums by the demon slayer.
Kaede checked on Inuyasha's wounds and felt his brow. Leaning back she sighed. "There is not much more that I can do. He is still fighting indeed, but my medicine may only slow down the infection by a day at most."
Kagome nodded. "Then a day is all we can hope for. Now I think is the best time to move forward with the plan..."
Kaede nodded, and moving about the hut collected the beads and bones she needed for the subdueing necklace.
Kagome squeezed Inuyasha's hand tightly. "I have to leave for a little while, but I will be back before you know it! Keep on fighting Inuyasha. Don't you dare give up!" She kissed his brow quickly, and left the hut.
Outside she was greeted by a demon blocking her path.
"You have made your decision, ningen?" He more informed her than asked the question.
Kagome smiled a little at him. "You will know in a second, my Great Lord Sesshoumaru." She said, dripping the title with much sarcasm.
There was a rustle of ricepaper as the older miko emerged from the hut, holding a necklace of beads and bones in her hand. Quickly she whispered the incantation, and the beads glowed blue before flying over and settling on Sesshoumaru's neck.
Sesshoumaru promptly growled and reached for his sword.
"Now Kagome! Speak the words to subdue!"
Kagome smiled at Sesshoumaru again, the glint of mischief reappearing in her eye.
"Down dog!"
And the Great Lord Sesshoumaru bit the dust.
Sooooo.... Twas much longer! I hope you liked this chapter. Maybe I will update next week. But no promises. Hopefully I get some reviews. I know I lost a lot of readers by not updating for a while, but I hope ya'll still check on my story! Arigato! Sayonara!
