Chapter 16 Office chat / Naru's birthday

"Sesshoumaru, can you come to my office please, it's important." Kouga asked his earnest attitude hating Mondays the result of not having Naru's birthday present just five days away and he hadn't bought her a thing. So in times like this he usually called on his long time friend and business partner Sesshoumaru Mushima. He was past his senior by fifteen years they shared the same secret he wasn't the only vampire demon in Tokyo hiding as a human. In ten minutes tops, his office door opened to a tall man in expensive three piece suit with Italian shoes. The suit fitting perfectly topping the look off with striking features his long sliver hair tied back. The only reason Kouga used his was to hide his elfish ears plus the real color of his eyes all vampire demons were born with.

"What do you want? I was rather occupied with someone until you called." He said hinting that he ruined a moment with his personal assistant in his office.

He took a seat in the leather chair across in front of his desk, "I need your help...with a important matter." He carefully regarded the older man's reaction.

"Is this the reason why you ran away at yesterday's board meeting?" Sesshoumaru asked while leaning back in the leather chair putting his hands on the armrest. And the real reason he "ran away" was to take Naru out to the movies.

"Yes it was. And FYI, I didn't runaway either besides you owed me one.” He replied calmly. “I need to know what to buy...this certain woman for a birthday gift." It was well known that Kouga and Sesshoumaru were man whores, when it came to women, but since he said a certain woman that can only mean one thing, he had it bad.

“This has to be good. May I ask the name of this special woman who has caught your eye." He said with a smirk on his face, putting his feet on the desk with his hands folded behind his head.

"Her name is Naru and I'm not caught up. I'm just very fond of her attributes is all." He replied with a clipped tone unsure if he even believed what he just said.

"Such a beautiful name. She must be a knock out because you’re lying through your teeth.” He laughed deeply letting his arms fall down. He tsked the younger man in front of him for pulling a fast one.

Kouga just huffed, and leaned back in his leather chair crossing his arms defensively. "Why so secretive, Kouga? Is she one of those women who depend on plastic surgery?" Leaning forward to rest his fore arms on his spread knees his interest peaked.

"No, of course not it's kind of a...a hard subject to say is all."

"I see. Well you won't get any help from me until I know at least something about her." He pointed out his tone serious Kouga could tell he meant what he said.

Sighing loudly, Kouga rubbed his neck glancing at him before he spoke. "She's younger then me in a way."

"Really? How old is she?" Sesshoumaru was irritated with his stalling, and wondered what was the problem he had that was making him uncomfortable to talk about.

"She's... she'll be eighteen in about two days and I haven't thought of a good enough idea for her birthday present." He rushed out in one breath raising his eyes to see if he was cracking a smile or not at his dilemma, but wishing was for fairytale stories because his stone face was indeed cracking the fuck up at what he just said. Waiting for him to calm down, he frowned at having to wait so long.

"It's not that fucking funny."

"Calm down. I'm sorry, honestly Kouga that's just the last thing I'd except you to say.” He said the humor in his tone not helping him get anywhere.

"Are you ready to hear me out or keep laughing like a bloody hyena." Sesshoumaru stopped and put on a straight face signaling he was listening.

"I met her after the investment meeting; remember I told you I was heading out early to purchase that new S400 jaguar from Myoga's dealership. Well, after taking it for a test drive, I saw her walking with a friend and followed her up until, I stepped out my car to introduce the charm but instead she punched me in the jaw, surprisingly though, my guard was down." As soon as Kouga said it he quickly berated himself for telling Sesshoumaru of all people that. Proof being the smirk that wanted to come out of the smug bastard's mouth.

He quietly cleared his throat, and pressed on, "Why did she punch you in the face?" He hoped his face looked serious because it would seem rude if he let himself laugh a little.

"Uh, she thought I was going to kidnap her and her friend.”

Sesshoumaru wanted to comment on the slightly dreamy smirk on his young companions face. But, he chose not to for the other scent that permitted his body as well.

“So, what's her body like? She must be a rare beauty for you to care about whether a birthday gift is good enough. I'm even shocked you care about giving a woman a birthday gift, first of all." That's Sesshoumaru, always blunt and to the point, now you know where Shippou gets it from.

Kouga grinned slowly, opening his desk draw for his pack of cigarettes, “Her body is hot and she's currently more then just a small time fling.” Plucking one out the box he lit it as he leaned back further in his chair.

Exhaling a large puff of smoke, Kouga pushed the pack across his desk toward Sesshoumaru. “Well, the girl sounds like a good investment. When will I be meeting her?"

Now here comes the bomb. Kouga loved doing this, "First, tell me if Sango is in your office and I'll tell you when she'll be visiting." He smiled from ear to ear at the slightly surprised look, like he'd been caught for forgetting about their demon traits of smell. Kouga actually noticed the faint scent of a woman when he sat in the leather seat in front of him.

Sesshoumaru snorted in disdain, already dismissing Kouga's childish game of kiss and tell. "Yes it's Sango.” Kouga was about to speak but he cut him to the punch, “And no, I'm not telling you why her scent is on my person, if that's what you're waiting for me to say.”

His tone was prove enough to think of anything he wanted about it. "Fair enough. Soo, if I'm not correct didn't you give Sango the day off today? Oh, and could she be the one?" Kouga liked to tease the seasoned veteran, already well aware that Sesshoumaru had a thing for Sango since she started the job. As his memory recalls, about two years ago, and they never slept together. Reason for that is one, she was a good girl and he liked his women easy, which she wasn't. So he took it as a challenge.

"Yes it is her day off. But she refused to stay home unfortunately. Furthermore, you'll be informed about my love life when the time comes.”

“Awww. You’re no fun.”

“You'll just have to deal, young man. But I have to leave now I'm needed elsewhere, so here's a bit of knowledge my young Padawan. The perfect gift to buy her would be jewelry, preferably a necklace, say something about how it reminded you of this or some other dribble. And she'll be content as a lamb, I mean, it's a known fact women like a considerate man." Sesshoumaru stated while snubbing out his cigarette in the ashtray, walking away, heading out the door upon hearing Kouga laugh at his dismissive manner.

"You are most wise master Obi Wan. I trust you'll let me know if you need a best man for that wedding." He called out shaking his head at his love struck friend. Sesshoumaru smirked at his friend's silly comment. Leaving out, and on his way to his own office, he knew what they had done, and Sango was probably confused and in need of answers. She better be waiting for him like he told her to.

Suri Morisato still had her beauty, at the age of forty two, her face looked unblemished with just a few gray strands in her midnight hair wrapped in a neat bun down to the slender arch in neck wearing a white blouse fitting snug closely to her slender waist tucked under a hip hugging dark blue knee length skirt perfectly accentuating her petite frame. She stayed home from the office today desperately needing to buy her daughter a birthday cake, being a lawyer consumed most of her free time trying her best to be a good mother also. Suri had a busy schedule, that took her away from her baby and that just wasn't justifiable in her case since she raised both her and her sister alone. She loved making up for lost time with the girls starting from when they were younger those were the days as she would recall. Smiling at that she climbed upstairs balancing a round Oreo ice cream cake with a molded eighteen unlit candle in her hand. She crept into her daughter's pink and white room seating herself next to a lumpy blanket with pieces of hair sticking out from the top.

Suri had to smile at her baby not being a morning person. "Honey-bun, wake up." She said softly pushing the blanket away from the top of her head.

Smoothing back tangled hair from her face. She sighed thoughtfully the sun was shining brightly on this slightly humid Friday. She also knew she would thankfully be happy for the day off from school since today made her the birthday girl.

Turning abruptly on her side her back facing her mother. "Just a few more minutes..." Suri huffed walking to the foot of her bed pulling every last pink curtain opened, Naru hissed jerking her body away from the blinding sunlight.

"God ma,” Her sleepy voice yawned, as she stretched her arms in the air lifting her belly shirt. “Cut me some slack would mom, it's my birthday for crying out loud."

"And a good morning to you too honey-bun.” Sitting up Naru scratched her head seeing what her mother was talking about, “I have an unlit Oreo ice cream cake you have to blow out the candles, you also have additional gifts you can have after the candles are blown out so..." A white and black cake with Oreo cookies placed all around the top woke her up. Lighting all the eighteen candles that were on the cake, she held it in both her hands moving to sit at her bedside.

"Now that I've got your attention. If I left you alone to yourself you'd probably sleep through your entire birthday no doubt."

"Hey I would not besides I... what time is it?"

"Nine thirty-nine, don't worry you don't have to go to school today if you don't want to."

"Is that so. Wow! It's only a Friday. This day just gets better and better."

"Uh huh. Blow out your candles before the cake melts." She blew out her candles wishing for something good to come out of her relationship with Kouga.

"Happy Birthday Naru! Your eighteen now and soon you'll be gone just like your sister." She said her voice laced with sadness smiling at her baby.

Raising swiftly while hearing her mother laugh, "I get it and if you start crying on me, it's going to bum me out." She loved her mother for being emotional at times like these.

"I'll make you a special breakfast with strawberry pancakes your favorite."

"Here then take my gifts I know your going to love them." Giving her a small bag with different color ribbons hanging from the handle. Taking the bag Naru peeked through it smiling like it was Christmas all over again.

"The cellphone is connected already, holy shi-I mean cool a credit card too?" She pulled out a pink Verizon Blackberry curve fitting slim in her palm.

"The phone is monthly with the Internet and all other stuff included. The credit card though..." Naru examined the small card with her full name on the front winnie the pooh was the design to it.

"It has a limit Naru."

"A limit?"

"Yes five hundred per day, the total amount on it is ten thousand so don't go crazy. I repeat don't go crazy understand, save some for college and emergency purposes." Suri sternly informed, she understood standing up with cake in hand she kissed her cheek walking to her bedroom door she stopping hearing her daughter's low voice.

"Thanks mom your the best."

"Your welcome honey-bun. Now come downstairs for your pancakes. I'll make them with strawberries your favorite." Closing her room door, she waited five minutes not hearing her mother she screamed in joy while hopping out of the bed. Running to her private bathroom to shower Naru started to dress in a pair of shorts and baby tee pulling her hair up in a ponytail, skipping downstairs she entered the kitchen watching her mother make her famous strawberry I can't believe it's not butter! pancakes just for her life was good.

"It smells heavenly in here."

"Thank you. I'm making sausage and hash browns, I already made toast the jelly and butter's on the table."

"Katsumi called last night but you were at Gigi's house."

"What did she say?"

"To keep a secret that she's getting on a late flight from London and should be here some time this afternoon but you didn't hear that from me." She had her back turned talking while pouring pancake mix into the frying pan.

"Gotcha. It's been a pretty long time since the last we saw the infamous super model." Sitting down at the kitchen table watching her mother cook.

"It's only been two and a half months dear. Don't over exaggerate it's not nice." Slicing fresh strawberries into a bowl she ran them under running water.

"Sorry mom. I just miss her and I'm a little surprised she had the time to come and visit.” She replied getting up to go to the fridge and take a carton of milk out.

"Don't worry sweetheart, she'd never miss your birthday so try to relax...” She frowned slightly, stopping the pouring of the pancake batter, “And please stop drinking out of the carton Naru and use a glass like the well mannered young lady that I've raised." Her mossy green eyes glanced at her while flipping a pancake over.

“Yes ma'am.” She muttered huffing, for having to look for a glass through the over head cabinet. Pausing before she could take a sip, the door bell rung, then again.

"Could you be a dear and answer it for me my hands are tied.” She turned up the fire for the oven putting another stainless steel pan next to the bubbling pancakes.

She left her milk mumbling under her breath as she walked to the front door. Suri smiled to herself multitasking was like the bible to her, working as a lawyer and raising two kids on your own did that kind of stuff to you.

Bare foot she walked to the front door opening it she squealed in surprise, her big sister Katsumi was here. At a height of 5"9 Naru only reached up to her chin, her face looked like she had her own make up crew on stand by when she got off the plane. Luggage in each hand she gave her a huge grin showing sparkling white teeth. In a tight light maroon denim skirt that stopped to close to comfort at the middle of her thighs and a tinny tight maroon tank top baring her slim waist curving to her slender hips. Looking down Naru sigthed in jealous contempt her sister's flawless legs in a pair of maroon heels. Probably manolo's. Her extra perfect pedicure in a soft peach painted on each dainty toe. Katsumi had taste, she admitted many of times growing up. At the age of twenty one she looked like a breath of fresh air any less would be forbidden.

Katsumi took off her Gucci shades and folded them in her hand. "Geeze, Naru. Your boobs need some toning down your starting to look like Pamela Anderson awhen she had her D cup upgrade." Stepping inside quickly and brushing past her. Katsumi sighed in relief as she dropped her heavy bags on the floor welcoming the cool AC.

"Gee thanks, Kat. I've missed you too." Shutting the door she turned around only to have the air leave her while Katsumi was squeezing her body in a loving hug.

"Happy Birthday baby sis! I've been away for so long, and look at you, you've grown so much,” Katsumi had mossy green eyes identical to their mother's they glowed with delight. “Oh and I have birthday presents for you from London." She bent forward and kissed her forehead and swept a hand over her cheek.

"What did you get me? I wanna see." Naru anxiously asked looking at the floor to her sister's over sized bags lying lifeless beside her feet.

"Nope not until...” She lost her train of thought and drifted towards the kitchen inhaling slowly, “Until I know what that delicious aroma is coming from, excuse me."

"Yummy mom's cooking isn't she?" Her button nose lead her to the kitchen where her mother was busy making coffee. Naru frowned pouting like a spoiled brat following behind her big sister.

"You can't have none of my special pancakes so don't even ask." She piped up flopping down in the wooden chair across the oval table with her chin in her palm watching her sister sneak a piece of bacon from the plate on the kitchen counter.

"Sumi-chan your here early. I thought you said by noon it's only ten." Suri wiped her hands on a nearby dish towel hugging her older daughter lovingly leaning back to kiss her cheek.

"I couldn't contain my excitement by the time I got off the plane, plus I smelled your cooking all the way from the airport and broke the speed limit just to get here." She laughed at her eldest and her playful humor. Naru smiled sadly in thought watching her mother and sister but missing her father's deep booming laugh also. There were still four seats at the table.

"I see you've came just in time for breakfast, it's finished and there's some more pancakes in the microwave so help yourself, but honey-bun gets the strawberry one's birthday tradition." She smiled with love at Katsumi's sticking her tongue at Naru with her doing the same, she truly loved her daughters.

The morisato family sat at the table gossiping as usual whenever katsumi came around, taking photo's of herself out her coach bag. The many stories about the dozens of men she had to endure while staying in London sightseeing photos only for about two weeks of touring. Finishing their talk katsumi was ready to dish out the gifts.

"Here three boxes from me open this one first." Katsumi looked at her baby sister's face light up like a Christmas tree.

"Well open them." Her mother said sitting between the two lifting her cup of tea sipping it slowly. Tearing the ribbon wrapped around the box she opened it, she gasped seeing ruby earrings secure in satin lining inside the box.

"Oh Kat, there beautiful. I love it thank you." Getting up to her hug her sister, Naru turned to her mother showing her the small gems.

"These earrings are gorgeous Sumi-chan." Suri complimented her eldest.

"I know. I know. I am the goddess of fashion sense." She gloated with pride examining her manicured nails the same soft tone of peach as her toes.

"Open this one next." Elated she pointed to another box having bought something Naru would like closing the small box she placed it on the table picking up a yellow one with a white ribbon, she pulled a satin dress out the material felt like water to her hands unfolding the dress she stood up to examine it the. End of the dress stopped at her feet and the back was missing the color of the gown was a wine red it was the prettiest thing she'd ever seen.

"Uh kat...I don't know what to say.” She quietly regarded the silk textured red dress. “The dress is gorgeous."

"I want to see how it looks on you later you don't need to rush but I want to see if it fits your hips."

"Okay thank you." She smiled, while neatly folding the dress putting it back in it's box sealing the lid.

"That dress would look so beautiful on you. I can't wait to see it for your prom honey-bun." Suri smiled softly taking a sip of her coffee.

"Yea I guess." Katsumi caught Naru scrunch up her nose knowing that there must be something bothering her.

"Open the other one jellybean it goes with the dress." Katsumi spoke as she stood picking to get her purse off the couch returning, to an medium sized black box with a pink ribbon on the table passing it to her. Taking the box apart she pulled out a pair of open toed satin red heels long straps hung off the shoes.

"So you bought me an dress including heels to wear for the prom...I'm impressed kat thanks." Naru eyed the shoes she smiled, katsumi had bought her a seven the right size tucking them carefully back in the box she crossed her legs in thought looking at her sudden sullen features.

Suri quickly excused herself to answer her cellphone ringing repeatedly she left the two in the kitchen, Katsumi got up swiftly opening the fridge she pulled out the carton of milk about to drink from it until she heard her mother from afar telling her to use a cup like everyone else. She made a gentle frown her mother's reprimanding to her etiquette was as always a bother on her nerves just the fact that she knew exactly what she was doing and wasn't even in the same room with her that's just creepy.

"So, how long are you staying this time?" She said while trying on her ruby studs getting to go to the hallway a mirror that showed her face and neck she looked at herself examining the sparkling gems on her earlobe.

"Until this Sunday I told my agent I needed to leave on a family crisis and all but the deal was to fly back to America for a runway show in Miami." Katsumi placed her cup of milk in the sink walking over to stand behind Naru pulling her long hair behind her shoulders she grinned affectionately.

"That's cool I graduate in June, “She lowered her eyes, “If you have the time that is to come." Waiting katsumi continued to braid her hair thinking of a good enough answer to give her.

She felt awful having to do this, "I'll try my best to make it but I can't make any guarantees okay, so don't hate me." Giving her a sad smile she didn't want to make her sister feel bad, but it just felt so good to have her around.

"It's okay I know your a busy super star and all I understand." She was about to say speak until there mother came out of the living room with a small frown on her soft features.

"That was my job,” Grabbing her briefcase by the door, “I have to come in to the office and handle a urgent case, I'll be home late tonight.” They gave identical frowns, used to her leaving suddenly to work.

She knew those looks and simply said, “I don't want to but I have no choice.".

She gave an apologetic smile to her babies. "Sorry about this you two.”

She quickly kissed Naru's forehead, “Go out and have a good time for your birthday, honey-bun, you deserve it.” She kissed her twin, lastly as well, “And when I get home, Sumi-Chan, we'll watch old romance movies like when you were younger, okay." She kissed both of them again as any over protective mother would their smothered child.

Moving away she checked her purse for her car keys, and said. "Oh and before I forget,” Moving toward the coat hanger, she grabbed her thin beige jacket by the door.

“Your curfew is banned since your eighteen. I'm under obligation to not tell you legally what to do, so in any case just call me on your cellphone and let me know when you decide to stay out for the night, got it? " While talking she packed a couple of folders into her briefcase, then checked her watch, abruptly lifting her head in wonder why Naru hadn't said anything yet.

Well, she was too busy being dumbstruck with extreme happiness, "Are y-you serious? I can hang-out?” She pointed to herself, “I don't have to ask? I can just stay out just like that?” She daintily placed a hand to her forehead swaying sideways, “Good god! I think I'm going to faint, sister dear, please catch me." Naru acted as if she was about to fall, and on cue, Katsumi caught her while fanning her with her hand.

"Oh Mother!” Katsumi spoke in a cheesy southern accent, “She's gon' an caught the vapors, my word!"

Suri rolled her eyes and tucked her jacket under one arm, "Quit the horrible acting you two. I give.”

Peeking through one eye, Naru smiled while laughing because Katsumi was tickling her, she desperately began to swat her hands away as she stood. “And I'm being serious with you Naru, if you don't call me whenever or wherever you are, I'm hunting you down, then, dragging you home with my bare hands.”

Naru immediately stopped giggling and gave her a meek yes as her response."I promise to call you every hour on the hour, okay mom." So Suri left it at that and walking out the door, while doing a light jog to her car and hopping in the driver seat she drove away.

Both sisters listened to the fading sounds of their mother's car screeching the pavement. As Naru turned from the hallway to the kitchen, Katsumi turned slowly to face her.

Naru felt a sudden chill creep up her spine for some uncertain reason. And, that's when she heard her look alike say, "Hey jellybean! How about we have one of those sisterly chats we've never had in awhile...

Dreaded Doom. Naru sat opposite side at the kitchen table from her devil of a older sister, watching her cut two slices of you heard right, devil's food cake. She accepted the delicious piece of morsel on a white china plate and gazed cautiously at the sugary sweet smile Katsumi had on her face.

Taking a piece of her cake Katsumi ate in repose humming lightly at the sweet taste of her mother's famous cake. She put her fork down and tilted her head back while taking a slow shallow breath, then exhaled shortly after. “ SO what's the topic for today's discussion lil' sis?”

Naru raised her thin eyebrow in a clueless gesture, her fork half to her mouth, “I can't think of anything. Do you have any ideas?”

Katsumi smiled again and Naru almost wanted to whimper, ”OOOh I dunno, guys maybe, any in particular, you know real girl gossip and all that." She had to bit her cheek to stop from laughing at the totally horrified face her baby sister just gave her.

“Kat, do we have to?” Naru whined miserably.

Quickly scooting her chair over, Katsumi slung her left arm over her shoulder giving a quick and reassuring half hug. "Now, now, don't give me that look, it'll be fun trust me on this!” Poor Naru began to sulk even more hearing her say that.
