Night Intruder
Kagome lay among her dreams peacefully. Rin and Shippo’s voices were tangled amongst everything else. Her mother’s steady voice and her brother’s deepening one proved audible, too. Even Inuyasha’s was there, whispering her name.
‘Wait’ her mind thought groggily.
“Kagome,” his voice whispered again.
‘Why would he be in my dreams?’ Her mind was finally falling out of the dream world. What brought her completely out was an insistent shake of her shoulder.
“Kagome!”
Kagome’s eyes shot open and found Inuyasha’s. Stifling a gasp, she sat up and pulled away. Inuyasha just sat on her floor, studying her. His ears were pulled forward in imitation of hers, but the similarities ended there. He held his usual scowl while Kagome fought for control over her budding anger at her sudden waking.
“What are you doing here,” she finally managed. Inuyasha’s scowl deepened.
“I came to see you.”
“Sesshomaru’ll-”
“I don’t give a damn about Sesshomaru!”
Kagome gave a wearied sigh. Looking at the clock, she saw it was only nine. Rin and Shippo would be playing by now, but Sesshomaru would still be sleeping. Feeling very tired herself, Kagome yawned and sat herself cross-legged in perfect imitation of Inuyasha.
“What do you need, Inuyasha,” she asked with a steady patience.
“Just to talk.”
“Fine.” Kagome ignored his glare at being giving permission to talk.
“I don’t want you to through with this,” he stated bluntly.
“Go through with what,” Kagome asked, her black brow raised in perfect imitation of her intended now.
Inuyasha leaned forward with a dangerous look. “Stop acting like Sesshomaru,” he hissed. “That isn’t you and I don’t like you being like that.”
“Well, you never liked me enough anyways,” Kagome said rather dismissively.
“I don’t want you bonding to him.” His glare was furious, but he remarkably kept his voice level.
It was Kagome’s turn to lean forward, but with a more amused look. “I have you to thank for it really.”
“HOW?!”
‘He sounds shocked’ she thought ‘And pissed. Good.’ She gave him a small smile, not realizing how much she resembled Sesshomaru by doing so. “If you hadn’t spent so much time searching out the dead ningen, we would have never developed such strong feelings for each other.” She watched as his face grew red and struggled not to laugh. Only a year or two ago, she might have found it cute, but now it was stupidly hilarious.
“If we hadn’t become so involved, we probably wouldn’t have fallen in love. So in a sense, you are my cupid, Inuyasha. Thanks.” Kagome gave him a wink and a rather harsh smile.
“And what about me,” he demanded, springing to his feet. Inuyasha watched as Kagome slowly climbed to her feet.
“What about you, Inuyasha,” she snapped, finally allowed her anger to show. “What about those years we spent together? What about all the opportunities I gave you? What about all those times you chose Kikyo over me?” Stubbornly she pushed the red tinge from her eyes. She would not lose control now.
“You know, Sesshomaru had never done that,” Kagome snappishly informed him. “He has always been faithful and kind. He has never put me down and degraded me. He lets me come and go as I please. Tell me, Inuyasha, when have you ever done that? When have you stood beside me unwavering?” She leaned towards him. “When have you ever told me you love me?”
Inuyasha looked furious. He balled his fist tight and Kagome could smell his blood from the punctures. Angrily, he went to slam his hand on to her desk. Kagome was too quick. She caught his wrist, holding him.
“Do you really to wake up Sesshomaru?” She knew she sounded cold.
Inuyasha yanked his fist away. “So you love him?” Kagome nodded. “Enough to lose your friends?”
Kagome bared her fangs slightly, the only sign that the question hurt. “If you were truly my friends, you’d support me.” Her voice was ice to rival her love’s tone.
Suddenly, Inuyasha pulled Kagome close in the same way she had seen him hold Kikyo so long ago, the same way she had always wished. It took her a stunned second before she pushed away. Even though she had more demon flowing through her blood, her children took most of her energy, making him easily stronger than her. His mouth was bent close to her ear as she growled her frustration.
“I’m sorry, Kagome,” he whispered softly. “But I can’t let you make this mistake. I do love you, so I can’t allow you to do this.”
Kagome’s voice was a dangerous growl. “And I’m sorry, Inuyasha, but this is my choice!” Finally, she managed to work and arm free and swung viciously.
Startled, Inuyasha jumped back a step. Taking a glance at his arm, he saw she had only cut the cloth. It was clearly a warning, though, and Inuyasha was in denial. He stared in wonder at Kagome as her open threat gleamed in her eyes. Inuyasha tried to take a small step forward, but stopped at her low growl.
“You’re in no condition to fight.”
“No, I’m not, but Shippo and Sesshomaru are. Shall we see how long it would take them to get here?” This stopped Inuyasha in his tracks. “Now, leave and don’t come back.”
Inuyasha looked hurt, but only for an instant. In the next moment, a grimace of anger replaced his façade. Without another word, he leapt out the open window that Kagome assumed he had come through. Breathing heavily, Kagome sat down, crying silently.
“Sesshomaru,” Kagome said rather anxiously. It wasn’t very loud, but she doubted he was still asleep after that. He probably heard most of the conversation. Kagome didn’t really care; she just needed him.
“Kagome, are you ok?” Sesshomaru stood at the door. He was all ready dressed in his white kimono with the red markings of the Lord of the Western Lands. This proved Kagome’s theory. Kagome didn’t answer as she went to him. She buried her troubles as she drowned in his scent.
“Inuyasha came.” Kagome knew Sesshomaru knew all ready, but she had to spill her worries to feel better. “He told me I shouldn’t be with you. He said he wouldn’t allow it because he loves me, but I told him now.” Sesshomaru’s arms pulled her tighter to him. “I told him I love you and he had never proved he loved me. I was even ready to fight him to stay with you.”
“Well, I’m glad you didn’t. I’m glad you thought to call me.” He gently tipped her head up to look at him. “I’ll always be here to protect you.”
Kagome gave a small sigh. “I know.”
Feeling much better, she decided to stay where she was. Sesshomaru allowed the prolonged affection because she needed it and because, admittedly, he loved it. She needed his comfort and strength. As much as she hated the idea, he knew she was still so fragile. It made the need to protect her that much stronger.
“Come on,” he whispered above her. “They must be wondering where we are at.”
Reluctantly, Kagome nodded and pulled away. Sesshomaru planted a small kiss to her lips before leading her down the steps to her family. The couple had all ready pushed Inuyasha from their minds before the reached the last step. Everyone greeted them with smiles and laughter, lifting their moods.
Unknowing to the family inside, on their roof sat a plotting half-demon.
A/N: Here you go everyone!! I think I'm on a roll. Thank you muse for coming back to me!! Oh and a special hi to "princess of the western lands!!" I hope I got that right. Sorry if I didn't, sweetie. She was my only reviewer and she inspired me to put out the next chapter. Say your thank you's to her!!
