The Letter and Kagome's Choice
A.N.: So I just finished chapter 14 and was bored so"¦what the hell! Why not another chapter?! *grin* You know you love me! Kind of toying with the idea of illustrating pics of my version of the characters (I'm getting my Associate Degree in Art"¦so we're not talking stick figures..lol). Good idea? Bad idea? Drop me a line and let me know. I'll probably start on those when I take a break during this chap. Anyway"¦keep it up with the reviews!! Enjoy the story!

Sesshomaru stood and pulled his distressed mate up with him, holding her close as he met the gazes of the other lords; his lips drawn in a grim frown. This was the last thing he had wanted and had tried to avoid this very situation. As he held Kagome to him he made his decision. He would fight for her to the very end! The North and South Lords nodded in silent agreement; they would come to his aid if such a crisis arose. Mashiru's arrogant and foolish challenge would not go unanswered if he chose to act on his anger.
"˜Let him come!' Sesshomaru thought, a growl growing in his chest. "˜I will break him and he will beg for death before the end!'

Chapter 15
The Letter and Kagome's Choice

Shippo munched on his apple as he watched his mother with growing interest. It had been a month since the incident in the library; Kagome had spent her free time in the dojo and with her children. Despite his admiration with her obvious improvement, Sesshomaru had expressed concern on her lack of sleep but she had simply smiled as waved him away. With another grunt, Kagome brought her leg behind her and severed the head of the practice dummy. A rumble from outside signaled the approaching thunderstorm; the air outdoors remained warm regardless.
Rin was spending the afternoon with Sesshomaru in the library, reading along side him. Her bubbly attitude was unaffected by the Western Lord's irritation and anger as he shuffled through the papers on his desk. The Taiyoukai eyed the letter over once more before setting it down and rubbing his eyes.
"˜A whole month passes with no word, and then this comes.' He growled to himself as he mulled the new information over. Mashiru had sent a challenge to the Lady Kagome; if she were to refuse, Mashiru would march against him and his allies. She had not seen the letter yet and Sesshomaru was not sure if he was ready to give it to her. With a heavy sigh, the demon made his decision and turned to the reading girl a few feet from him.
"Rin." He stood from his desk and approached the pile of pillows from which the girl had been reading. She smiled brightly at him and stood, holding her book to her chest. "Go fetch your mother and send her here to me." Sesshomaru patted her head gently as she nodded.
"Yes, Sessho-papa!" With a giggle, Rin darted from the room leaving Sesshomaru to stare out of the large windows into the gardens. He had recently given Rin and Shippo permission to address him as such, much to the delight of the two. The tapping of the large raindrops carried throughout the castle, comforting in its own way. The grey shadow that settled over the land did little for Sesshomaru's current frame of mind.
Sesshomaru was too deep in thought to hear Kagome approach the door in enter; pale arms encircled his waist and her head rested on his back. He could smell earthy scent of her sweat as he turned in her embrace and brought his arms around her. With precise aim, he cut the ribbon holding Kagome's hair in a tight ponytail above her neck. The ebony tresses cascaded about her small form; Sesshomaru idly ran the claws of his right hand through the silky strands. Kagome could tell by his gentle caresses and lack of greeting that something was on his mind.
"What troubles you, my Lord?" Kagome asked as her eyes closed as he held her against him. Sesshomaru looked down at the demoness in his arms, his eyes betraying the unrest that lay beneath his calm exterior.
"I have received word from Lord Mashiru, Kagome." He felt her jump in his arms and reflexively tightened his hold on her. Kagome remained silent, her heart beginning to beat rapidly in her chest. "He has given me three options concerning you." Kagome raised her head and locked eyes with him, her eyes darkening considerably.
"And those choices are?" She voice cracked against her will.
"One is that I renounce my status as your mate and send you back to where you came from." Sesshomaru watched her closely, he eyes held a deep sorrow. "The second is that I ignore him completely and as such he will formally declare war upon me." The Western Lady's eyes clouded at his words. "And the last is"¦" The Taiyoukai swallowed the lump in throat, unable to continue. Kagome whimpered, nuzzling his chin in encouragement to continue. "The last choice was a personal challenge to you, Kagome." He held her close, burying his head in her hair. Kagome stood frozen by his words.
"What sort of challenge, Sess?" Kagome stepped back from him, her face set in grim determination. He let her go, his eyes half-lidded as he answered her.
"Mashiru finds you unworthy as a mate of a youkai, because he feels that you are not a true youkai yourself. You heard for yourself during his visit." Kagome nodded slowly, digesting his words. "So if you were to prove yourself, he would retract any ill words and accept public humiliation for his actions after withdrawing his armies from my lands." Judging from his tone, Kagome now understood why Sesshomaru was so upset.
"What do I have to do?" Sesshomaru stepped forward and grabbed her arms, his eyes ablaze.
"No, Kagome! There is no reason for you to prove yourself to that pathetic lizard!" His frown faded to shock as Kagome calmly shook her head, a sad smile on her lips. Sesshomaru sighed again as he released her. "You would have to face Mashiru's mate, Jutori, in a duel. The loser either dies or faces a life debt to the winner. Interference from either side is strictly forbidden and punishable by death." By the end of his explanation Sesshomaru's eyes held a distant look in them. Kagome placed a hand on his arm.
The drops of rain they fall all over
This awkward silence makes me crazy
"I get the feeling that Lady Jutori is not exactly renowned for showing mercy. Am I correct?" Sesshomaru nodded curtly as his eyes finally met hers, his arms opening as if to beckon her to him. Kagome walked into his arms and placed a hand on each side of his face, her thumbs brushing against his cheeks lovingly. "If I refuse he will come for us and many will die"¦on both sides regardless of Lord Toshiben or Lord Karumos's offer for aid. As a miko and mother I cannot allow such a senseless loss of life."
The glow inside burns light upon her
I'll try to kiss you if you let me
"Jutori is a leopard demon who hates humans as much as her mate and she is far more experienced in combat than you. You are incredibly strong, koi, but I fear for your safety"¦" His hands covered hers as the barriers around his heart began to fall. Sesshomaru removed her hands from his face and placed them on his chest. "Consider Rin and Shippo before making your decision." Kagome's eyes harden at his last comment and she nibbled on her bottom lip.
This can't be the end"¦
"I have thought about them, my love. That is why I will do what is needed to prevent this war from ever reaching them." The demoness's eyes silently begged him for understanding, her jaw set firm. "All else fails I could always through a ball of yarn off a cliff and let her go after it." The room had been so tense that the joke set Sesshomaru into a deep laugh along with his mate. He embraced her fully as their laughter echoed through the room.
Tidal waves they rip right through me
Tears from eyes worn cold and sad
"Stubborn wench"¦" The Western Lord whispered into her ear as he held her close. "I finally understand what Hell you put my lummox of a half-brother through."
Pick me up now
I need you so bad
"But you love me all the same." Kagome retorted tauntingly, the sad smile had not left regardless of their laughter. Her hands buried themselves in Sesshomaru's thick hair, willing her arms to never let go of him. Instead of a reply, Sesshomaru tightened his hold on her, his tail wrapping around the both of them. The Taiyoukai's eyes were slammed shut, his jaw locked and rigid. Kagome gasped lightly at the intensity of his hold, but closed her eyes peacefully and purred into his ear. The storm thundered on, the smell of rain and flowers surrounded them as they held each other.

Rin and Shippo entered the room quietly; jumping at the thunder as light suddenly filled the library. Shippo could sense the sadness of his parents, a frown spreading across his face. He tugged on his sister's sleeve, nodding at the couple. The girl followed his gaze and approached the couple, the kitsune right behind her.

The lovers jumped slightly as two small pairs of arms encircled their legs, heads leaning against their legs.

"Mama...Papa?" Rin's small voice carried above the thunder, her eyes danced in the streaking lightening. The couple released each other slowly to embrace the children; Kagome's dark eyes flew to Sesshomaru's. They would not be able to keep this from the children. Picking up the nervous children, they sat on a pile of pillows by the windows, raindrops sliding across the glass.

Kagome adjusted Shippo on her lap, wrapping her tail around Rin and Sesshomaru. Her mate did the same, staring at the demoness intently as she cleared her throat. The explanation was slow and painful for Kagome, so Sesshomaru had to finish for her as the demoness's voice began to crack and waver. Shippo and Rin listened quietly as large tears made their way down their flushed cheeks. Shippo grasped at Kagome's kimono as Rin launched herself into her lap. Ebony bangs hid the shaking demoness's eyes as she held her children to her; she hated putting them through this, but it was the only way. Fierce determination coursed through the woman veins. She would face the Southern Lady and defeat her"¦for her children"¦for Sesshomaru. Kagome's cold eyes lifted to her mate's.
I feel the darkness break upon her
I'll take you over if you let me
Sesshomaru clenched and unclenched his jaw, fighting the new and strange emotions tearing him apart. He offered a tired smile as he locked eyes with her. "˜I have faith in her"¦I have to"¦' The Taiyoukai slid closer to the demoness and weeping children, wiping away their tears and whispering words of comfort. Shippo sniffled lightly and slowly crawled unto Sesshomaru's lap, careful for any sign of overstepped bounds. He was clearly startled when the demon's arms swept around him to gather him against the Taiyoukai's chest. The kitsune buried his head in Sesshomaru's silk kimono, seeking the familiar comfort only a father could offer. Throughout the emotional talk no one had noticed the storm's disappearance, sunlight streaked into the gloomy library.

"I have faith in you, Mama. We both do!" Shippo chirped from Sesshomaru's arms, his smile shining from his tear-stained face. Rin nodded franticly in agreement, hugging her mother tightly. Kagome smiled"¦a real smile as her children and mate regarded her with love and trust.

A knock at the library door caught the group's attention; Jaken opened the door hastily and bowed low, mumbling about the children's studies as the tutor, a rabbit youkai, appeared beside him. Kagome thanked him and busied herself with wiping the children's damp faces with the sleeve of her kimono. She promised to take them into the gardens as soon as their lessons were over; the children brightened considerably at her words and ran to their small, study table. Kagome and Sesshomaru left the library in silence, the demoness spun around in the empty hall to face her mate.
Pick me up now
I need you so bad
"They're so brave"¦" Kagome glanced at the closed door behind them. "I know they're upset more than ever, but they try so hard not to show it." Sesshomaru nodded lightly, his eyes fixed on the fatigued demoness before him. Within a blink of an eye, Kagome's knees gave way and she fell into the Inuyoukai's waiting arms; a content sigh escaping her as she gave in to the week's lack of sleep. He cradled her in his arms as he made his way to their chambers.

Sesshomaru removed the tear and sweat-stained kimono from Kagome's body and settled her between the dark sheets, brushing the bangs away from her eyes. He stood to leave only to find her hand grasping his own; the Hellhound demoness whimpered lightly as she opened her eyes. Sesshomaru could read her silent request as her burgundy orbs clouded over. As the sun began to set, the demon undressed as well and dropped to the bed beside his mate, cradling her once more in his arms.

The woman in his arms finally quieted and stilled; he nuzzled her hair and breathed her in. Sesshomaru was certain that she was sleeping as he held her tighter, willing this day to end. Tomorrow envoys would be sent out to declare Kagome's acceptance of the duel; the demon's eyes hardened at the thought. He would give anything to spare her from what was coming, but nothing could be done now and he hated himself for acknowledging that.
One thing was certain"¦if Kagome fell in battle, the Lord of the Western Lands was sure more than just a part of him would fall as well. "˜My mate will not fall to that heartless bitch! I will not lose you, Kagome! My Kagome"¦' He shifted against her still form once more before finally giving in to dreamless slumber.
