Guilty Prayer

Inuyasha forced his way through the large group of villagers, praying what his nose had been telling him hadn’t been true. People quickly moved when they saw the red haori of the hanyou coming through the crowd. Inuyasha froze as he saw the spectacle before him; on the ground, he saw Kagome on her knees, bleeding, dirtied, bruised and in front of her laid the body of Kikyou. There too was traces of blood, dirt and bruises upon the visible parts of her body, but nothing more noticeable than the large stain of blood below her stomach.

“In…Inu…yasha…I…I’m so….” Kagome whimpered.

“Kikyou…” he said breathlessly.

Miroku quickly grabbed and steady Inuyasha when he saw the hanyou’s knees suddenly give out from under him.

“Inuyasha…” he sighed.

Without warning, Inuyasha grabbed Kagome by the collar of her tattered school uniform and bared his fangs at her.

“How? How did this happen?! You were supposed to protect her, Kagome!”

“Inuyasha! Put her down!” Sango yelled.

Inuyasha raised his hand in the air and brought it down upon Kagome’s cheek, forcing her face to turn to the side as a red bruise began to form. Her bangs shadowed her eyes, tears streaming down her cheeks. In her mind, she deserved it…had she been able to defeat Naraku on her own, Kikyou would have still been alive.

“Inuyasha, how dare you!” Sango yelled, grabbing his wrist.

“I…” Kagome whimpered.

Kagome grit her teeth and with eyes burning with tears, locked her eyes with Inuyasha.

“…I DID MY BEST! Naraku, the REAL Naraku attacked the village while you were gone! I…I…!”

While he was still gripping the collar of her, Kagome forced her lips against Inuyasha’s shocking the entire village. Inuyasha’s eyes widened before glowing a strange purple color. He released her collar as Kagome forced him to see all that she had seen, heard, feel, said and heard. In his mind, he could see Kagome and Kikyou fighting side by side and Kagome protecting Kikyou from the powerful attack from the Hikarikage when it was in Naraku’s possession. He saw the determination in Kagome’s eyes when she demanded that Kikyou returned to the village and finally, when Kikyou forced Kagome out of the way of the falling trees she knew would land on her little sister and kill her. Kagome broke the kiss, whimpering and burying her face in her hands.

“It’s my fault…! I should have been the one…I should have done better to protect Kikyou! I should be the one lying there instead of her!”

“Kagome, don’t say that! Kikyou gave her life for you and I’m sure she was happy to do it!” Sango said, holding Kagome tightly.

Kagome sobbed into Sango’s chest, falling to her knees in the process. Sango embraced Kagome tightly, glaring at Inuyasha over her shoulder.

“Inuyasha, apologize! You saw what happened…! You saw that Kikyou didn’t even have to think before giving the life of her and her child for the life of Kagome’s!”

Inuyasha kneeled down, gently lifting Kikyou’s head slightly. There were traces of a smile on her face. What did it mean? Was Kikyou really happy to give the life of her and their child in order to save Kagome? Inuyasha lowered her head as he embraced her cold body to his chest. Silent tears racked his body and spilled down his cheeks and onto the cheeks of his beloved Kikyou as if they were her own. The tears he cried the villagers shared with him. The loss at the most beautiful protector and the lost opportunity of meeting the child that would one day assume the position as it’s parents. It was a heartbreaking display as Inuyasha gently kissed her lips which were slightly warm and thanked her for loving him. This only broke Kagome’s heart further. How could it have come to this? She wanted Inuyasha, but not this way. Kagome cursed her birth, knowing that if she’d never been born, Kikyou and Inuyasha could have lived on together without any problems from her. Inuyasha sighed, looking at the villagers. Men, women and children alike all shed tears, prayed or bowed for their fallen protector.

“Miroku,” he said slightly choked.

”Yes, friend?” Miroku asked, putting a hand on his shoulder.

“Prepare a funeral for Kikyou. Please…I…need some time to think…”

“Of course.”

Inuyasha didn’t even cast Kagome a second glance as he exited the village. Sango continued to stroke Kagome’s tattered, but soft brown hair. Kagome was still very wounded many in different ways from this entire experience. Sango remembered Kikyou returning alone before putting up the barrier that protected the village from further harm. Sango begged Kikyou to allow her to exit the barrier and retrieve Kagome, but Kikyou wouldn’t hear anything of it. When Kikyou channeled most of her power into a powerful talisman to keep the barrier up, Sango knew that Kikyou planned on going back for Kagome…and that Kikyou had no intention of returning alive. The thought caused tears to pour down Sango’s cheeks once more. Several hours passed and no word from Kagome or Kikyou. It was early dawn the next morning that the barrier dispersed for good, sending a cold chill down Sango’s back. Gathering a group of men, Sango and the men hurried to the forest, encountering several dead and rotting demons. When they came to a part where all of trees seemed to have been cut down in a violent fashion, they’d found a dead Naraku; speared through the heart with the Hikarikage and his head cut off with the Tsukikage. When they found Kagome, she was holding Kikyou’s dead body to her, but it was Kagome that had the eyes of a soulless, lifeless person. When Sango stepped on a twig, Kagome looked at them, attacking them without even thinking, all to protect her sister. It was obvious that the entire incident had snapped Kagome’s mind. It took three men and Sango restraining her to bring her back to normal. Even though Kagome had calmed down, the same, soulless look in her brown eyes had stayed with her. Even now, as Sango held the girl to her chest.

“Kagome…?”

But Kagome’s eyes just watched as Inuyasha left until he was out of sight.

“Kagome-Chan?”

Kagome looked up and saw Miroku, smiling down upon her with his beautiful blue-gray eyes. He gently pat her head before kneeling down in front of her.

“I know this must be difficult, but…”

“Kikyou would have wanted to be cremated. Please, do so, Miroku-Sama.”

Miroku nodded, patting her shoulder as he stood up.

Kagome gave a small nod and looked at Sango.

“Will…you prepare her for me? I’ll go get ready.”

“Of course.”

As Kagome stood up and went to get changed, Miroku looked at his wife for guidance. It was difficult having her only family gone from this world and her only support left didn’t want to even look at her. Several hours later, when Kagome was bathed and her wounds treated, she was dressed in the same black kimono she’d wore when the well had become hers. At one point, the kimono had also belonged to Kikyou and the whole point of her bringing it with her to the past was because Kikyou promised to take her to a festival. But, there were no festivities; only mourners and people from distant lands even, came to pay their respects. Kagome hadn’t realized how popular Kagome was in Feudal Japan. The realization dawned upon her as she saw Kikyou laying there, prepared for her funeral. She’d have to tell people in her time that Kikyou had died as well. It was almost too much to bear as she glanced down at her sister’s peaceful face. She wore makeup to hide any bruising and she’d been cleaned and prepared perfectly. The white kimono Kikyou wore was spellbounding…almost similar to the one she wore when she and Inuyasha got married. Miroku prayed and people paid their respects. Kagome sat kneeling in front of the coffin, which contained her sister’s body and prayed. Sango sat beside her for comfort, even though the mourners said comforting words to her. When Inuyasha finally did return, he’d returned with a very large bouquet of white lilies. He said nothing to Kagome, or even Sango for that matter and laid them Kikyou’s body. He was in so much pain…he’d lost both his child and his wife in one cruel twist of fate. Out of the corner of his eye, he glared at Kagome. And it was all because of her damn sister, he thought. Were the gods punishing him for lusting after her, even though he’d made good on his promise to never persue her like that again? Was this his punishment for his past infidelity, if he could even call it that? He turned his head away from Kagome and leaned over to kiss the lips of his wife once more. Without another word, he left the procession and for a moment, his friends wondered if they’d ever see him again. The funeral came to and end and Miroku went ahead with the cremation. There was a great celebration in Kikyou’s honor and a memorial created for her ashes, which now lay next to a small shrine on a hill in the village. Despite the festivities going on below the shrine steps, Kagome wanted no part in it as she stood before Kikyou’s grave. It just didn’t seem real…Kagome closed her eyes as she imagined Kikyou’s warm and loving smile, unchanging, even as she got older. Kikyou, who’d been the only family she’d had left, who’d never gotten mad at her…was gone. She fell to her knees, whimpering slightly. She could still feel the pain from her wounds, even though Sango treated them earlier, but the biggest source of the pain came from her heart. Kikyou was gone, Inuyasha hated her…

What did she have left to live for?

She said a prayer, promising she’d be with Kikyou soon enough. Despite the tight kimono she wore, she stood up and hurried down the stairs, running as far from her sister’s grave as possible. She rushed past Sango on the way down, time slowing down enough for Kagome and Sango’s eyes to lock for a fleeting moment. Sango froze upon seeing the look in Kagome’s soft brown eyes…

“S…someone…” Sango began as Kagome rushed past her.

Kagome hurried her pace, hearing Sango scream,

“SOMEONE, STOP KAGOME!”

Those who’d heard Sango’s panic words quickly turned in time to see Kagome rush past them. Miroku was showing his son to a few of the ladies of the village when Kagome rushed past him.

“Kagome…?!”

But she did not stop to look at him, just continued to run to the entrance of the village.

”Miroku!”

Sango stopped to catch her breath before looking at her husband in panic.

“Kagome…! We have to stop her…!”

”Why? What’s the matter?” His voice turning serious.

“I…I think Kagome is going to…I think Kagome is going to try and kill herself!”

”What? How do you know this?”

”That look she had in her eye…Miroku…I wore the same look at one point, do you remember? When we first met…”

Miroku’s face paled. Quickly giving his son to one of the elderly ladies, they gave chase after Kagome, praying that they weren’t too late. A flash of red quickly joined them, before speeding ahead of them and Miroku and Sango quickly stopped.

“That was Inuyasha!”

”You think he’s going to try and stop her…?” Sango wondered.

“We can only pray.” Miroku sighed, taking his wife’s hand.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Her back still burned, she was positive the pain from her broken ribs would kill her, but she prayed that maybe if she ran fast and far enough, she wouldn’t be able to feel the pain any longer. After running for what seemed like forever, her path was finally blocked by the large river that separated her and the other side. The water looked deep and the current was very rapid. Without thinking twice, she hurled herself into the water. The temperature of the water was cold, but not freezing, though it did sting at every wound she had on her body. As if in a dream, she sank to the very bottom until the light from the surface seemed almost invisible. Kagome closed her eyes…Isn’t this what she deserved? Especially if Inuyasha hated her now? She could tell everyone was blaming her for Kikyou’s death and the only way she saw to atone for her sister’s death was for her own. As the strong, underwater current carried her away, she wondered if drowning hurt. Her heart was beating rapidly and her mind started to get foggy, but she didn’t feel any pain. The light from the surface began to fade away with the exception of a large shadow that seemed to be drawing closer to her. Was it death? Was death coming for her? She could faintly make out traces of long, silver-white hair and glowing eyes, and two arms that were outstretched to her just as Kikyou had done to save her. She closed her eyes, welcoming the embrace from death as everything went dark for her…
