Chapter 15
Kagome raced around the living room nervously. Again she straightened the covers on the furniture, that had not even moved since the last time she fussed over them 20 minutes ago. She rushed back into the kitchen to check on dinner then spun around to look at the table making sure everything was placed in the correct place. She smiled to herself, a year ago she wouldn’t have even known what the correct way was to set a table but when you’re pregnant and have nothing to do, you tend to read a lot. It was rather funny the things you pick up. Again she fussed over the living room chairs. As an after thought she trotted back to the baby’s room and checked on him. He was sleeping peacefully for now and probably wouldn’t wake up for another couple of hours. Just then she heard the light knock on the door. She stopped before reaching for the knob thinking maybe she should have changed from work but then another knock sounded and she knew that he would get impatient if she waited. With a smile on her face, she opened the door.
Inuyasha raced down the hall in the direction that the old woman down stairs told him. He could kick himself for being late but it couldn’t be helped. It would be so much easier if he could talk her into moving in with him then he wouldn’t have to come clear across town to see her. Unfortunately he knew it was too soon for that sort of thing so he would have to bide his time. As he rounded the corner he came to a halt at the sight in front of him. There stood Kagome hugging a tall dark haired man in her doorway. “I know I’m late but you could have waited for a few minutes before getting another guy to come over?” He said abruptly making them both look at him in shock. Kagome’s eyes looked at him in confusion then back at the man in front of her. Now that the guy was looking at him, he could see he wasn’t more then maybe 14 or 15 years old by the youthfulness of his face. Inuyasha frowned more. She was going after a really young one.
Kagome blinked a couple of times still looking between the two confused. The boy stepped toward Inuyasha with his hand out in front of him. “I’m Jinenji. My mom and I live next door. I came over to tell Kagome thank you for helping me with my girl friend. I don’t know what I would do without her advice.” He explained quickly. Inuyasha’s scowl turned into a small sheepish smile as he reached forward and shook the boy’s offered hand.
“Inuyasha, Kin’s father.” He said proudly. Jinenji’s eyes grew large in recognition.
“You’re the guy that knocked her up and left her. That was crude man.” Jinenji frowned. Inuyasha’s scowl returned as he looked past the boy to Kagome.
“You told him I abandoned you?” He said trying to control his anger. Kagome snapped out of her stunned stupor and shook her head frantically.
“No, no...I would never say that.” She said hastily.
“Then where did he get that idea.” Inuyasha snapped.
“Oh well I kind of assumed that is what happened since that’s usually the way it is.” Jinenji confessed as he looked away and rubbed the back of his neck. “She didn’t really explain and I knew she was pretty broken up about it. Seems that is the way it always goes when a girl has a baby on her own. At least that’s the way it is on most those talk shows.” He looked away down the hall avoiding both of their glares.
“Well in this case...” Inuyasha started but Kagome stopped him.
“It was my fault.” She admitted getting both their attentions. “I walked out on him and didn’t tell him about Kin until recently. Don’t worry Jinenji, we’re trying to work things out ok?” She smiled hopefully at him until he grinned back.
“Ok but if you need anything, you call.” Jinenji smiled as he took a step around Inuyasha to return home.
“I will.” Kagome waved as the huge boy disappeared into his apartment. Inuyasha watched him leave still feeling a bit miffed over finding him being hugged by Kagome then he turned to see Kagome looking at him expectantly with her arms crossed over her chest.
“What?” He asked innocently.
“You know what.” She said coyly and turned to walk into her apartment. Before she could get two steps from the door she was grabbed from behind as the door was shut. She soon found herself held firmly against the cool wooden door with a fuming Inuyasha standing over her.
“Maybe I want to hear it from you. Assumptions seem to run ramped around here and I don’t want to make the wrong ones.” He leaned in closer and nuzzled the side of her head taking in the soft scent of her hair. She swallowed the lump that formed in her throat at the feel of his lean hard body hovering just beyond touch. Oh how she wanted to touch those muscles and feel them jump under her fingers.
“I can’t believe you thought something was going on between us.” She admitted. He smiled inwardly.
“How would I know any differently?” He asked toying with her. She shivered when his tongue ran over the shell of her ear.
“I told you there wasn’t anyone.” She held back a moan when his teeth tugged on her earlobe gently. “Are you saying you don’t believe me?” She challenged trying to make him think she was upset to keep from making any sounds that would only add to his huge ego.
“I believe you.” He replied bringing his mouth along her jaw and letting his warm breath flow over it as he spoke. “I just like seeing you squirm.” He kissed her chin gently. He continued to caress her skin with gentle nips and soothing kisses until he reached the other earlobe. “But I want to see you squirming in another position.” He admonished. “Where’s the baby?” He asked as he continued his sweet torture to drive her insane with want.
“Sleeping.” She all but choked out.
“Good.” He said and before she could respond she found herself lifted up by the thighs as he wrapped her legs around him. Then he turned and walked over to her couch where he laid her down beneath him as he attacked her neck. ‘Well so much for trying to make things look perfect.’ She thought but soon all reason left her as his talented tongue ran down to the valley between her breasts. “You have too many clothes on.” He mumbled against her skin. His breath tickled where the skin was still wet making her giggle a little but it helped to clear her mind.
“Yash, what about dinner?” She panted out trying to distract him.
“What about it? I have everything I want right here.” He looked up at her with a small smirk on his lips as he groped her breasts. She rolled her eyes at him and shook her head as she laughed.
“I really missed you.” She said seriously. He moved up her body until he as laying over her but kept his weight up so he didn’t crush her.
“I missed you too. A lot.” He leaned in and kissed her so softly you would think her lips were made of fragile glass. He kept it soft and pleasant with just enough passion to let her know how he felt. This was so different from the man she used to know. That Inuyasha was full of fire and heated desire that would sear her soul every time he kissed her. This was real pure adoration and love. She could feel it deep with in her. When he broke the kiss for air he laid his forehead on hers and sighed deeply. “This is like a dream and I’m afraid I’ll wake up only to find you gone.” He said in a quiet tone. Her heart thumped painfully at his admission. Until now she didn’t realize that her actions made him just as much a victim as she was. A single tear slid from the corner of her eye before she could stop it.
“I’m so sorry.” She sobbed brokenly. He opened his eyes and looked at her with surprise. The last thing he wanted was to make her cry.
“Kagome don’t...” He pleaded softly feeling guilt. Slowly he lifted himself off her bringing her with him so that they could look at each other.
“I hurt you so bad because I was afraid to face how I really felt. I can admit it now. I was jealous of your relationship with Kikyo. I wanted you all to myself but I didn’t think I would ever have you because you still loved her. Most of all I wanted you to be happy and if being with her, even in that screwed up relationship as it was did that then I was willing to let you go.” She took a couple of deep breaths trying to get her composure back.
“Kagome, I understand. You don’t have to tell me this. When you disappeared I thought I was going to loose my mind with worry and grief. I thought that my stupidity had driven you to do something terrible. I haven’t stopped thanking any god that may be out there that you are safe. Please don’t cry or worry yourself over it.” He reached for her to pull her close needing to feel her in his arms but she pushed on his chest with her hands and her head hung low. She shook her head refusing to look up at him just yet. She wanted to get her thoughts together.
“It wasn’t your fault. It was mine. I was the one being stupid for letting my emotions run away with me.” She insisted fervently. Her eyes filled with more tears as she lifted them to look him in the face but he could tell she was trying desperately to hold them back. He placed his large hands on her face and held her there searching her eyes for the answer he thought she wanted to hear to make it all right but he knew she wouldn’t accept something like that. Inside he knew how she felt and he could understand it. He spent many a sleepless night blaming himself for everything that went wrong.
“I...I know how you feel.” He began still trying to find the words to sooth her aching heart. “I spent every second thinking of how many things I did wrong but I couldn’t find any reason for them or ways to change them. So I found ways to keep my mind busy with work and school to stop thinking about you. But as soon as I was done with a task, you crept back into my mind and it started all over again. I can’t even remember how many times I thought about how I could have done things differently. So you see, in the long run we are both to blame. We both made our mistakes and yes we could have handled things differently. But its time to realize that none of it matters now because we both had a hand in screwing up our relationship just like we both had a hand in making that beautiful baby boy in the other room. We have to stop blaming ourselves for things we can’t change and let it all go. I don’t want to dwell in the past like I did before. If there is one thing I’ve learned, the past is just that. You can’t go back to what it was because everything changes over time.” As he spoke he inched his way closer to her keeping his eyes trained on hers until he was a breath away from her lips. “I want us to start over again Kagome. I want us to rebuild what we once had but this time we will have our eyes open to the truth of what it really is.”
She looked at him in wonder. To hear such things coming from this man was unreal to her. He had changed so much over the past months she almost couldn’t believe it was the same person. A small frown formed on her lips as she searched his eyes hoping it wasn’t just some fancy words he was using because he thought that is what she would want to hear. She sat back from him suddenly with her eyes narrowed. “Where is Inuyasha and what have you done with him.” He blinked and raised an eyebrow unsure of what she meant. He was speaking from his heart but evidently she wasn’t taking it that way.
“What do you mean?” He couldn’t stop himself from asking.
“You were never....” She looked him up and down scrutinizingly. “That deep before.” She finally said and leaned back against the arm of the couch with her arms crossed over her chest. He looked at her in surprise. Sure he probably wouldn’t have said that much mushy stuff before but right now he needed to let her know what he was really thinking. Why would she think he wasn’t telling the truth. Then it dawned on him just how uncharacteristic his confession had been. He smiled sheepishly.
“I guess you could say its because of all the time I’ve been spending with Miroku and Sango. For being a pervert, he actually makes a lot of sense when it comes to terms of the heart. He even talked me into reading some books on relationships. As boring as they were, they actually helped me deal with most of my problems. I guess you could say, I’ve learned to face up to my mistakes and learn from them.” He told her earnestly. Her eyes softened as she worried her bottom lip. He held back a smirk at the action. It was one of her many habits that he often thought had made her extremely cute. “The main thing is,” He began again picking up her hand and holding it gently in his, “I don’t want to dwell on past mistakes. I acknowledge what I did was wrong and even though you did hurt me, I don’t blame it all on you. I should have been more open with you. Things may have turned out differently. I’ve forgiven my self but I don’t expect you to forgive me or forget. All I’m asking is that you forgive yourself for all the guilt you are holding so we can work past this and start fresh. Even if it takes starting from scratch with dating and all that, I’ll do it as long as I can be near you and Kin.” He looked at her with so much hope it yanked at her heart pulling it from the cold depths of uncertainty.
Suddenly she threw herself in to his arms holding him as tightly as she could as she sobbed into his neck. “I love you so much.” She whimpered clinging to him as if he would disappear.
“I love you too.” He felt his own tears form in his eyes as he hugged her as tightly as he could without crushing her.
