Alive and Alert

Alive and Alert

Kagome watched the rain fall down from her window. It has been two weeks since she's been home. Her heart still ached for those that she'd left behind. They were all dead by now, there was nothing she could do about it. She belonged here for some reason, she wished she knew what it was. Her family sensed how upset she was about what had happened. Of course she wouldn't tell them of the lover she had taken. He was her secret, and she would hold him close to her heart. Everyone was sleeping already but sleep evaded her.

Deciding she needed the fresh air she put on her slippers and walked outside. The rain had her soaked within minutes, she kept walking. She stopped in front of the large tree staring up at the vacant spot. What had become of her best friend? Tears ran down her face as she cried for him. "Inuyasha."

She reached out to touch the spot he'd once been pinned. "Why? Why was I sent back?" No answer came and she suddenly felt all alone.

The next day she decided to leave the house against her mother's wishes. Her wound was completely healed much to the doctor's and everyone's amazement. She couldn't explain why so she didn't try. One thing that bothered her was she often she wondered what happened to not only Koronue but Youko. She never got a chance to know him that well but he had marked her. Were they both still thief's running around doing who knew what?

Her walk led her to the old jewelry store where she'd bought the pendant. She had the half still sitting in her jewelry box, the other was gone. She opened the door and walked in. The woman greeted her, "Hello dear."

"Hello, I was wondering if you could answer a question."

"I'll try dear." The woman smiled.

"I bought a pendant not too long ago from you. I think you said it had a name. The soul stone?"

"Oh yes dear I remember now. Not long after you left I remembered the story behind it." She sat down on her stool. "The old lady I bought it from told me that centuries ago they were believed to possess magical powers. No true value really, unless you believed in magic. But she sold me some story how if the stone connects with the wearer then it would have the ability to save lives. Obviously it isn't true because no one lives that long now adays."

"Did she say how it was suppose to work?"

"Ummm no. Wait she did say something like, one owner swore that he was caught in a fire and he felt himself being pulled and suddenly appeared outside his house. Said some bullshit about he'd been sucked inside the stone and then spit out. Oh excuse my language. Why do you ask dear?"

"Oh, mine actually broke in two. Wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be cursed or something." She smiled at the woman.

"Well, sorry to hear that but I can't give you a refund dear."

"Oh no, I wasn't worried about that. Thanks was an interesting story." She smiled and walked out. Well that didn't do any good. Koronue had the other half and she had no idea where he was.

She trotted back down the street looking down at her feet in defeat. She yelled when she collided with someone, "Owie," Her nose rammed right into someone's back. Her eyes flew up, she could see nothing but long red hair. The guy turned around to look at her. Her breath caught in her throat at the intense look in his green eyes. She blushed when she realized she was staring, "Sorry, my fault I wasn't looking where I was going." She moved around him to continue walking. Kagome was suprised to feel his eyes on her, it had to be him staring holes into her back. She'd said she was sorry.

She turned down the next street, having no clue where she wanted to go. As long as it wasn't home. She turned to look behind her and cursed her luck as she bumped into someone else. She felt herself collide against someone and fall back. The girl dropped her bag at seeing that her boyfriend had bumped into someone.

"Dammit, Yusuke watch where you are going." She threw the bags into his arms. "Here, are you okay?" She extended her hand, offering it to the fallen girl.

Kagome took her hand and got back to her feet. What else was going to happen? "Is she okay?" Kagome turned to see the red head walking up to them. She felt herself blush, he must think she's a clumsy idiot. What excuse did she have? That she'd been lost in thought, pining for a man that she'd last seen five hundred years ago. Someone call the paddy-wagon. What was worse he was talking over her head like she wasn't her. Hello she could speak for herself. "I'm fine. Sorry, guess I'm not paying today. Excuse me."

"Wait, haven't I seen you somewhere before?" Keiko asked. "Yes, I have. I know you, you're Higurashi, Kagome. One of my friends in freshman chemistry can't stop talking about you. Hojo talks about you all the time." She slapped Yusuke suddenly for no reason. "How are you feeling? He's been worried about you."

Kagome felt her embarrassment soar. She'd known Hojo had finally graduated and started college. Not only was he pointing her out to people as his girlfriend still but grandpa was still feeding him bogus stories. What was it this week? The plaque? "I'm feeling fine, thank you."

Keiko walked up to her, "You do look pale, I'm so sorry Yusuke bumped into you. Of all the people to crash into, it had to be someone with frail bones."

'What the hell?' Kagome grimaced. What was she a walking talking sick ward? Atleast she didn't have gout this week. Man was that guy stupid, if someone was that sick they'd have long been dead. She should just scream the truth, then they would all just believe she'd simply been in a padded cell and grandpa had been trying to save face. "I'm fine, Hojo tends to exagerate I'm afraid."

"Well, its to be expected I guess, since you two have been dating for over two years." Keiko smiled at her.

'Oh no, thats where I draw the line.' She was going to have a talk with Hojo very VERY soon. "Yeah, though we aren't actually dating." Okay lets set the record straight.

"You're so lucky, I wish Yusuke was as crazy about me as Hojo is about you. Then maybe I wouldn't have so much trouble with him." Keiko heard him muttering behind her. "Here let me give you my number, maybe we can hang out sometime when you are feeling better." Keiko reached into her purse to scribble on a piece of paper. "I'm Keiko by the way."

Kagome took it but she would make sure she had a sudden break out of pityriasis rosea for the next twenty years. "Sure, well thanks and it was nice meeting you Keiko." Kagome took off before anyone could speak to her. She needed to get something to eat then Hojo was getting hurt.

Keiko watched her leave, "Poor girl." She didn't notice the looks Kurama was sending the girl.

'What is she playing at?' He didn't believe it was an accident that she'd bumped into him then into two of his best friends. Did she know who he was? He thought about it for a few minutes. No, she hadn't seemed to know him. He hadn't spent that much time around her before. Even if she felt the pulling from the mark, he looked completely different as Shuichi. He'd be careful around her and watch to see what she did. And if she didn't know him as Youko then he'd take the chance fate had given him to get even with her.

AN: For those that are curious pityriasis rosea is a harmless skin problem that causes a rash.
