Moments of Confusion
Author’s note: Ok so I need to clarify something. I never said that Inuyasha was abusive to Kagome. The things that he said however can be construed as verbally abusing someone. All I was doing was setting up a background, and I apologize to anyone who took offense from what I wrote. Fact of the matter is, someone doesn’t necessarily have to be hit in the past to end up in an abusive relationship. For some people, all it takes is a parent that insults or ignores them to screw someone’s head up. As the person grows older, things usually do get worse. It’s a progression. I happen to know quite a bit about because of a friend of mine who was in an abusive relationship. So no, I was not being callous or exaggerating the situation. The progression of dependency on abuse can grow as time goes by. I’ve watched it happen.
Disclaimer: No I do not own Inuyasha.
S Sesshoumaru followed Chris up the stairs, wishing that he could just once use his youkai speed around humans. Thankfully, they didn’t have far to go. Chris raced over to the second door and threw it open.
Katherine was lying in the middle of the room, screaming as her body convulsed. Chris ran over and grabbed her arms, preventing her body from completely banging into the floor.
“Help me out,” she yelled to him. “Grab her legs and help me get her on the bed.” The two of them quickly laid her on the bed as her body continued to convulse. Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes and used his youki to try and figure out what was happening. His eyes widened in shock. He had never seen anything like it before.
Her miko energy was trying to leave her body in a wave but of purification. But somehow, her body was forcing it back inside of her. Kami, no wonder she was convulsing so wildly. And there wasn’t a damn thing he could do. If he tried to use his youki any more than he all ready was, her miko energy might escape and purify him. As he tried to think of something to do Chris turned her attention back onto him.
“I need you to hold her legs down for me, ok?” He pulled his youki back into himself and firmly gripped her legs. He watched as Chris quite literally climbed onto Katherine’s chest, straddling her torso. He was about to ask her what the hell she was doing when he noticed how Chris’s legs leaned on Katherine’s arms, preventing her from thrashing about. He tried not growl as he watched her lightly slap Katherine across each cheek. The other woman seemed to know how to handle this, so he would question it until later.
“Come on Kat, focus on me baby girl,” said Chris. Her voice was soothing but firm, the kind of tone you would take with a child. She continued to speak to her and Katherine’s thrashings slowly calmed down.
“I think you can let go of her legs now,” said Chris without looking at him. He removed his hands and walked to the other side of the bed. He kneeled down next to Katherine. Her body had relaxed, but her eyes were completely unfocused. Her head still continued to move from side to side, but the screams had at least died down to moans.
“Come on girl, look at me. Focus on me I know you can do it,” Chris continued to try and talk Katherine down from whatever state she had fallen into. As Katherine’s head turned towards him, her eyes finally seemed to focus as she stared at him. A look of confusion passed over her face.
“Inuyasha?” she asked. Her eyes then closed and her body finally lay still. The whole thing had taken less than two minutes, but had felt like an eternity. Chris climbed off of her chest and sat down in a nearby chair.
“You really can’t pay attention to what she says when she gets like that,” she explained to him. “She babbles the most random things and most of it isn’t even coherent.” Sesshoumaru kept his face deliberately blank. He felt as if all the wind had gotten knocked out of him. Inuyasha? She had looked at him and called him Inuyasha. Did she actually remember?
He looked around and found another chair. Instead of sitting down, he first brought it over next to Katherine. He sat down and looked at her for a moment. She didn’t look like anything was wrong. Quite the opposite, she looked as if an angel had fallen asleep on the bed. Well, a fiery red head of an angel. A few wisps of hair had escaped her braid and lay against her cheek, making the all ready pale skin seem whiter than paper. He gently brushed the stray hairs back from her face. When he turned back to Chris, she had an expression of approval mixed in with the worry on her face.
“Sorry to have been bitchy with you before, but this has been happening to her since she was a kid. Me and the other girls have handling it down to a science and I didn’t want you to get in the way.” He nodded calmly and stared and her. Chris stared right back at him, but when she started playing with her hair, he could tell she was getting uncomfortable.
“SO do you wish to tell me what happened just now, or are you going to make me guess?” he asked her. She frowned slightly and then shrugged.
“It’s not really my place to say, but yo all all ready seen the worst of it. The doctors think its some kind of epilepsy, but they’re not completely sure. All they know is that it may look really bad, but it’s not actually hurting her. She’ll wake up in a little bit and she’ll be weak to the point where she has to spend the rest of the day in bed, but other than that she’s fine. No long term effects other than the fact that she can’t remember any of it afterwards. The only real danger is that she might hurt herself when her body is going all crazy like that.”
“And what happens if she is by herself when this occurs,” he asked angrily. She glared at him.
“Hey don’t get nasty with me. If I had my way she’d be on around the clock watch. When her parents died, we all asked her if she wanted one of us to move in with her. Sakura even offered to come stay and she was all ready engaged. I mean, between the seizures and her parents dieing, we figured that she would need at least one of us around to keep her sane. But she said that she would be fine and insisted that she could handle it. And she’s been pretty good. Unless she’s been bullshitting us, she’s only had one fit when none of us were around to help.”
“Screw you, Chris,” mumbled a soft voice from the bed. “You know I wouldn’t lie about something like that.” Sesshoumaru turned to look at her. Other than being very pale, she looked like she had gone back to normal. Her face was looking the other way and she hadn’t seemed to notice he was there. Chris jumped out of her chair and raced over.
“I did it again, didn’t I?” Katherine asked wearily.
“Yeah you did it again, kid. How are you feeling?”
“Like a sumo wrestler decided I got in his way and then tossed me in front of truck to boot. Did I say anything?”
“Yeah, but not that much this time. Same old gobbledy gook as always.” Katherine sighed and turned away from Chris. Her eyes settled on Sesshoumaru and her cheeks blazed crimson. Better that than pale as death, he thought as she turned to look at Chris.
“Sorry Kit Kat, but he heard you scream and fact of the matter was, I needed the help. This was a bad one.” Katherine closed her eyes for a second and then turned back to Sesshoumaru.
“I am so sorry you had to see that,” she apologized. Sesshoumaru held up a hand to stop her.
“Please, do not be embarrassed. I am glad I was able to help.” She smiled weakly at him.
“So much for lunch. This isn’t turning out to be much of a first date is it?” He reached over and gently took her hand.
“I would rather this happen now with one of your friends here to take care of you, than for us to be out and me having no idea how to help you.” He stared into her eyes. The green color seemed all the brighter when set in her pale face. He felt his heart go out to her. She looked so tired and at the moment, he wanted nothing more than to hold her close until she fell asleep.
“Ahem,” said a voice behind them. They both turned and looked guiltily at Chris, who was watching them with a highly amused expression on her face.
“This so sweet, I think it’s going to give me diabetes,” she told them, grinning that wicked grin that Sesshoumaru was starting to recognize and immensely dislike.
“But as utterly cute as you two are being, I really don’t feel like playing chaperone. I do have a date with in about two hours and you,” she gave Kat a very firm look,” Are not going to be left alone until you’re up and walking again. And sorry no offense, but I am not leaving a strange man in your house while you alone and barely even capable of taking a piss by yourself.” Chris walked over to the phone on the wall and hit the buttons for speakerphone and speed dial. It rang twice before a voice answered.
“What’s up Kat, did you finish your next chapter all ready?” asked whoever it was on the other line.
“It’s not Kat, it’s Chris. You busy?”
“No what’s up?”
“I need you to come over here. She had another fit and I have to leave.”
“Not a problem. I’ll put my shoes on and be right there.”
The other person hung up and Chris pressed the button to hang up the phone. She then walked to the center of the room and picked up a dress that was lying on the floor. Chris held it up against her body and carefulmootmoothed out the wrinkles. The dress was long and flowing completely delicate. Sesshoumaru closed his eyes for a moment, imagining Katherine wearing it.
“So, think I’ll be able to convince Lily that I’m feminine and delicwithwith this?” she asked Katherine. To his surprise, Katherine laughed for the first time since waking up.
“Chris, the only way you could convince anyone that you were feminine and delicate would be to get a brain transplant.” The two girls smiled at each other. Sesshoumaru started to feel a bit uncomfortable. It was hard to be around such a deep camaraderie as theirs without feeling excluded. Perhaps it was time to leave.
“Katherine, maybe I should be leaving,” he told her. She turned back to him, an expression of disappointment on her face. Chris walked towards the door.
“I’m gonna go wait for Val while you two say bye,” she said as she vanished out the door. Katherine bit her lip and closed her eyes.
“I suppose this is the part where you tell me it was nice seeing me, but you think it’s better if we don’t see ach other again, right?” He stared at her in shock.
“Why would you think that?” She bit her lip and looked away.
“Well, I know that when I have those fits, its not the most pleasant thing in the world to witness and you just seem in such a rush to leave…” she trailed off looking embarrassed. He almost started laughing. She thought that she had scared him away!
“No quite the opposite actually. I just thought I should leave so you can rest. But if you want me to stay-“
“I would love that,” she interrupted him. “I mean, that is if you don’t mind. I’m not going to be much fun.”
“I don’t mind at all,” he told her. He leaned forward and breathed in her scent. He could smell her pleasure at his offer. “I actually can’t think of anything I would rather be doing then stay here with you.”
“I could think of lots of things that I’d rather be doing, but I guess you’re stuck with me anyway,” said Chris’s voice. Val and Chris were standing in the doorway, Chris with a smirk and Val with a curious expression. Val ignored Sesshoumaru as she walked over to Katherine’s side and felt her forehead with the back of her hand.
“No fever this time, that’s good. Did you hurt yourself or did they you get held down in time?” she asked sternly.
“I don’t feel like anything hurts, so I guess they got here before it got too bad.” Val looked at her for a moment, pursing her lips. She nodded and the turned around to Sesshoumaru. She walked over holding out her hand to shake his.
“Hi, I’m Valerie Williams. Pleasure to meet you and all that, but I’m going to have to chase you out. She needs to get some rest.” Katherine grabbed her friend’s arm and shook her head no.
“No Val, its ok, he’s going to stay here and keep me company for awhile. I know I need to rest, but I’ll be ok for a litwhilwhile longer.” Val nodded.
“Fine, but the second I think he’s not helping any, he needs to leave. Got that?” she asked Sesshoumaru. He looked at Katherine and she nodded her consent.
“Very well,” he told her. The brusque look vanished from Val’s face and she walked over to the bed. She leaned over and gave the weary red head a hug.
“You call if you need anything, ok?” she told her. After Chris gave her goodbyes the two women left the room and went downstairs, leaving the two of them alone.
“Val’s a nurse, so whenever this happens to me, if she’s not at work, they try and get her to come and stay with me,” explained Katherine. “She really wasn’t trying to be a jerk. That’s just the way she treats all her patients. And unfortunately for me, whenever this happens, as far as she’s concerned, I’m a patient first and a friend second.”
“It’s fine. It was quite obvious that she’s worried about you. As am I.” She smiled at him.
“You shouldn’t be. Once it’s done, it’s done. And it only happens every couple of months. It just leaves me so tired.” As if in response to what she said, she gave a deep yawn. “You won’t be mad if I fall asleep on you, will you?”
“Not at all. If you want I’ll just talk while you listen. In fact, in you like, I’ll tell you stories of Japan long ago.” She smiled sleepily.
“No one has told me stories since I was a little girl.” He started to apologize, but was hushed by her raising a slender hand to his lips.
“It’s so strange, but I feel as though I’ve known you for a long time. Everything about you is so familiar. Am I crazy?” she asked. He shook his head no. She smiled again.
“What kind of stories can you tell me?” she asked. He took her hand and began to tell her the stories he had once told Rin to put her to sleep.
