Part 1 of 9
Everything was a solid wall of darkness with a dank mineral scented breeze touching her skin. There was the feeling of being suspended and weightless, with only the density of one’s own body and the thick cloying fragrance of demon spells laced the air with the toxic fumes of tainted magic.
A combination of all of these factors is what brought her back into the realm of the living.
Sango awoke, groaning, fighting to focus and remember what happened. Every part of her body ached, like she’d been sleeping on a bed of granite. Touching the ground beneath her, she was sure she was on the mark.
When she attempted to sit up, her head started swimming. It was bad enough her mouth felt like she’d swallowed sawdust. That was the weirdest part considering that the air was damp and humid with the fumes drifting around her like smoke. Being an exterminator, Sango knew poison in various forms; youkai, sorcery and industrial manufactured. The oddest thing about her situation was that the air surrounding her was clear and musky with the moist heat but with none of the toxins breeching the youkai magic force field surrounding her. The huntress was all too aware that the field was in place for practical reasons-to keep her imprisoned
A sliver of awareness crept across her somewhat dulled senses. Someone else was close by. The only thing she could determine was that they were not a threat. Or at least not yet.
“Oi.”
Sango squinted in the darkness to no effect, using her other senses to locate the individual who’d spoken and shattered the unyielding prison of sobriety. From what she could detect, they were somewhere behind her.
“I brought water.”
Sango would have snorted if her mouth wasn’t so damned dry. Well the worse they could do was poison her. Either way, she would die-whether she drank the water, didn’t drink the water-the outcome would be the same. Through logical deduction, she had concluded that her kidnapper was Kanna, the youkai who’d set her sights on Miroku, so of course the leader of The Mikos wanted her permanently out of the picture for good.
After hitting a switch on the wall to activate the mechanized bridge that would make it possible for her to walk out into the center of the toxic lake, Nazuma cautiously edged toward the huntress with a jug of water. She was risking Kanna’s wrath and the displeasure of the others by showing kindness to their captive.
It had been Kikyou’s idea to secure her upon the circular disc of rock that had risen up in the center of the onyx waters. Considering that Kanna’s hideout was built inside a cave, it worked out for them quite well.
“Who are you?” The huntress demanded, aware of how close the other girl was. By her tread, she could tell that the female was petite and carrying a weighty object. The water. Sango tried to ignore the sandy dryness of her mouth. Damn she could swear that she smelled the water. It was nothing more than dehydration and her mind working in conjunction with the craving of her body.
Nazuma didn’t answer. She merely sat the jug down close enough for Sango to reach, without the huntress being able to reach for her, even if she could detect her presence.
“Drink the water. You need to keep up your strength.”
“Daijobu.”
Nazuma persisted, knowing this was not true. “Please.”
Sango blindly reached out in the darkness for the water, until she could feel the large plastic jug. She gripped the handle while lying on her side, and lifted her body up partially off the ground to support the weight. Running her fingers across the lid, she opened it and paced herself as she drank. The girl’s voice drifted towards her in the darkness.
“You might want to go easy with that. I don’t know if I’ll be able to bring you more later.”
Nazuma adjusted her goggles that helped her to see in the overwhelming darkness and moved away from the huntress. She quickly walked across the bridge, and then hit the switch again which caused the long walkway to retract again. In the distance she heard Sango’s melodious voice call out to her.
“Domo.”
Nazuma replied, letting her words carry across the distance. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
Sango smirked. Let her come.
Somehow she would escape; even now her eyes were adjusting to the darkness. It was only a matter of biding her time. She had not trained all of her life to be a demon exterminator only to die like this by the hands of one.
*~*~*~*~*~*~
Kagome sipped her tea, concentrating on the soothing warmth of the beverage in order to better ignore the rampaging chaos of her noisy mind. She was carefully sorting through the information that Kaede had patiently explained to her. The older woman had kindly left her alone to absorb all the information. Kagome’s mind drifted back to everything the housekeeper had revealed to her earlier.
“Child, there are forces in this world that keep the Lawful balance and without those forces, the Universe cannot exist and Chaos would reign. Ningen have the ability to make choices but there are beings that are governed by amorality because they are not ningen. These beings are youkai-creatures of magic, powerful spirits. At one time, some were lesser kami.”
“However youkai and ningen do share a common thirst for power-as well as the instinct and ability to commit evil acts. Do you recall my stories? Not just about youkai and those who have fought them over the course of time, but also my tales about the Shikon no Tama?”
“The Jewel of Fours Souls?” Kagome quipped, all too aware of not just Kaede’s stories, but her grandfather’s teachings involving their family shrine. She had dismissed most of it as part of his New Age stuff for the tourists. After all, they did sell “Shikon Jewel” key chains and such in the gift store. “Isn’t that a legend? Like the youkai?”
Kaede offered her a stern but placid look that made Kagome blush. How could she doubt the old woman’s words? Besides she had noticed odd things about Inuyasha and if she were honest, other students at the school to make her question if most of the things Kaede was telling her were just myths and stories from long ago.
Not letting her thoughts distract her, the housekeeper went into full detail about the Shikon no Tama, and the evil it had rendered over the centuries. How it had been guarded by a powerful miko long ago who had lost her way after being betrayed by a dark priestess.
The shrine maiden had been lured by the dark priestess into her home with lies of changing and reforming her sinister ways. When she had offered the miko tea, it had been tainted with toxins and spells to bind the shrine maiden’s holy powers and body. While she lay helpless, a wicked youkai that was the dark priestess’ accomplice defiled the captive miko for days and then weeks. The demon eventually grew careless and overconfident which made it possible for the miko to purify him and escape. Several months later, the miko gave birth to twin daughters.
The miko used the last of her strength and powers to purify the blood of her daughters so that they would not be born hanyou. The purification process depleted the last of her life-force and after willingly performing this act of love for her children, she died.
Arrangements had been for one of the villagers and his barren wife to raise the orphans. When they came of age, the twin girls were sent to be trained as mikos. Soon it became apparent, that youngest was good with the compassion and morals of her mother, yet was plain of face and form. The older twin, stunningly beautiful, had the wicked youkai heart of her sire; lustful for power and the material gains of the world and status. She was cast out when she in a violent rage, she gauged out the eye of her twin who was attempting to convince her to stay and to seek the righteous Path.
Kagome braced her hand against her stomach when she realized that Kaede was speaking of herself! “All those times…those stories you told me…”she stared questioningly at the housekeeper’s eye patch and the older woman slowly nodded.
“Yes child, I spoke of my own adventures and those who were my companions and friends.” Kaede nodded solemnly. “I am the miko who stayed on the Path. Yet while I have aged, my sister, Kikyou, has continued using her powers for evil and consorting with youkai.”
“Kikyou?”
Kagome was stunned to learn all of this about Kaede’s past being actually true. And Kikyou! Surely she could not mean?
Kaede was nodding again before she could ask her question aloud. “Yes Kagome, as you have surmised, the Kikyou at your school is my sister. Many of those who you perceive to be as young as yourself and your classmates are not.”
“You mean there are more like her?”
“Indeed. There are hanyou, youkai and ningen with powers that attend your school who appear to be young but in fact have been around for centuries.”
Kagome had been stunned by all of the information involving Kaede’s past, the fact the Shikon Jewel was real and that youkai weren’t just magical beings she studied in her text books, New Age gibberish or bedtime stories! But the information involving Inuyasha and herself had left her in a state of complete shock. She took another sip of her tea and tucked her feet more securely beneath her as she recalled the housekeeper’s words.
“The Taisho Clan are inu youkai. Taisho Toga is the head of the family and quite ancient. Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru are his only offspring. Inuyasha is the son of Taisho-sama’s mate; a ningen woman named Izayoi. I am not privy to the identity of Sesshoumaru’s mother, but she is an inu youkai and the head of her own clan and territory, which is perhaps why she does not reside with Taisho-sama.”
“Inu youkai males are possessive and domineering over their mates. No full blooded inu youkai female as strong as Sesshoumaru’s mother would tolerate such behavior-not even from her own mate. She performed her duty when it was her time by mating with a puissant inu youkai male and went her way.”
Kagome shuddered as she recalled Inuyasha’s dominant behavior. She now knew to be even more wary of him. The last part concerning Inuyasha and herself sent a lance of sexual excitement and dread throughout her entire body.
Kaede had curtly studied her with her good eye. “I will tell ye this child. Inu youkai instinctively know their mates. I came to you today because I could detect from your aura, that the hanyou has mingled his own with yours-although ye still be innocent and pure.” She lifted a brow when Kagome blushed profusely at this comment. “I cannot stop him from claiming you as his own, unless ye DO NOT wish it. I feared that he had fallen into my wicked sister’s web but he is guarded with his heart after the incident with another.”
Kagome could not suppress her curiosity then. “Inuyasha was in love? Who is she? What happened?” Hmm. Where was this little niggling feeling of jealousy coming from? It wasn’t like they were an item or anything! She prayed that Kaede didn’t notice how her cheeks heated up.
“It is not my place to relate his tale, child. But it is a tragic thing to be born hanyou. They are scorned by both ningen and youkai. There are those who have no wish to be defiled by anyone with ties to youkai.”
Kagome nodded in understanding. That explained his abrasive behavior. She did not care for how he’d threatened her and kidnapped her. She did not appreciate how freely he had demonstrated his sexual prowess on her body. But she felt compassion anyway for someone who suffered for something that wasn’t their fault.
‘Sheesh, when I was looking for something “different” I don’t think I quite had this in mind,’ she mused. Plus, things couldn’t go on with Hojo-kun if she was already involved with Inuyasha. It would not be right or fair to either of them. It would not be right for her.
What set her on edge was when Kaede revealed to her something that she’d been pondering but had felt it was purely her imagination.
“I know about the holy powers stirring within ye, child. I have sensed them, having been born a miko. My power is nothing compared to what ye have been given; or even Kikyou’s. It had been my intention to train ye in the ways of the miko sooner but I was not allowed to because of my vow to your father.”
“Your father was descended from the line of priests and mikos who have at some time been the guardian of the Shikon Jewel. My mother was the apprentice of the One who created it, Midoriko-sama. How odd it is that the school you attend is named for her. Yet nothing is coincidence.”
“Kaede, what was this “vow” that you made to my dad?”
“I vowed that I would not train you or prepare you for your destiny unless you wished it or it became necessary.” Kaede paused studying her intently. “I believe that it has become detrimental to your well being. We can begin with a few simple exercises now to teach you control and how to “tap into” your power.”
For half an hour, Kagome had practiced with the miko and was stunned to feel her powers flare into being. She could now even see the auras of living things around her now.
‘I wonder what Inuyasha’s aura looks like?’ she speculated, recalling how Kaede’s aura was a luminous tranquil blue with lavender-white and silvery aqua.
Suddenly, Kagome was startled out her thoughts by a loud commotion coming from somewhere downstairs.
She rushed out her room at the sounds of her grandfather’s angry voice, Sota’s yelling and the familiar shouting tones of a third voice she did not want to acknowledge. The girl ran towards the stairs and down them into the main front entrance of the hallway. Kagome came to a screeching halt at the sight that met her eyes.
Higurashi-jiji was lying face down on the floor and yowling threats as he attempted to slap o-fuda on the young hanyou who was sitting on his torso. When Inuyasha refused to budge, the old man tried to bite him which elicited a threatening growl from the one holding him down on the floor with his weight. Sota was pleading with Inuyasha to let his poor grandfather up off the floor in a loud voice but Inuyasha refused to acknowledge him.
Kaede had just wandered into the room and sized up the situation before glancing her way. Inuyasha’s nose twitched and he turned his head and pinned Kagome to the spot with his golden glare. He jumped to his feet, pressing the old man harder into the floor from the shift, and Higurashi-jiji gasped, having the wind knocked out of him as Sota dashed over to assist him.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome snapped out her daze as anger coursed through her. “What did you do to my grandpa?! What are you doing here?!” Her eyes widened as she noticed that his bandana was missing and that perched on top of his head were very cute puppy dog ears!
“Kawaii! Inuyasha you have dog ears?! Sugoi!” she said, momentarily distracted, then recomposed herself. Sheesh! Hadn’t Kaede said that he was a hanyou? And an inu youkai at that? Anything was possible!
“Listen you! Just because you have cute ears doesn’t excuse anything you’ve done! Why are you here anyway?”
“Keh!” he snorted with his arms folded, turning his head away from her. He was trying not blush because she called his ears ‘kawaii’.
Kagome stormed up to him, jabbing her finger into his chest angrily forcing him to acknowledge her. “Don’t turn your head away from me buster when I’m talking to you! You better answer me about what you are doing here! If my grandfather is hurt in ANY way, I’ll kick your butt!”
Sota’s eyes grew wide as this last part, since that was his job. He was helping his grumbling grandfather up who was still panting for breath as he fussed.
“Vile-huff- puff-creature! Wicked oni!–huff huff-Don’t–puff-think I’ve been–huff-defeated by you!” The elder Higurashi was still gasping to catch his breath waiting for the youkai to make a sudden move.
“You better start talking bouzo!” Kagome exclaimed to Inuyasha who merely glowered at her and folded his arms. She started to glow a pale silvery violet as her finger drilled a hole into Inuyasha’s chest, causing his dog tags to clack together. The hanyou was starting to growl at her challenging behavior.
“Onee-chan!” Sota called in a warning tone, not sure if they should challenge the bike-riding tough guy. He was no wuss but he wasn’t a baka either!
Behind him, Higurashi-jiji was searching his robes for more o-fuda as he struggled to breathe more easily while muttering threats. Kaede merely stood there calmly waiting in case she was needed.
Kagome was oblivious to everything as she continued venting her rage upon Inuyasha who was now yelping because her miko powers were sizzling and shocking him! Kaede quickly intervened between the pair before more damage could be done, stepping in the middle and forcing the two youngsters to step away.
“Sota-chan and Higurashi-san, there is food waiting for you in the kitchen,” Kaede called out, offering an avenue of escape for the pair.
“I’m going-(huff)-to deal with-(puff)-that youkai-(huff),” the old man panted out, as his grandson grasped him by the arm to lead him away towards the kitchen. “Let me-(puff)-go-(huff)!” This excitement led him into a coughing spell since he was still winded.
“Feh,” Inuyasha tossed over his shoulder at the old man and the youth as they walked by. He touched his chest and winced. Damn that hurt!
“What’s the big idea bitch? Trying to purify me, huh?” He stepped toward her baring his fangs.
“Get out of my house you jerk!” Kagome shrieked, infuriated beyond caution.
“Shut up you stupid girl!” Inuyasha ordered, his face flushed with anger. “Bitch! Do you know who you’re talking to?”
“Yes! Yarou!”
“You nitwit!”
“Inuko piss!”
“Screwball!”
“Dungface!”
“Skank!”
“Loser!”
Kaede decided to intervene again as they continued shouting insults and closed in. Inuyasha snarled at the old woman when she cut him off from his goal which entailed cowing Kagome into proper submission.
“Get out of my way, baba!”
Kagome reached across Kaede and struck Inuyasha on the head. He let out a yap of outraged fury and faster than lightening, grabbed Kagome, bodily lifting her and running full force up the stair.
Nipponese words:
bakamon: dumbass
Daijobu: “I’m fine”
Kawaii: darn cute, pretty
inuko: puppy-koinu is another word for “puppy”
o-fuda: powerful spells written on pieces of paper. I called them sutras before in this story but I figured it would be more appropriate to use the Nipponese word instead.
Onee- big sister
Osuwari: “sit”command to nullify Inuyasha’s power-this command is only used for dogs not people though.
Sugoi: cool, awesome,
Yarou: bastard
kls: I know, I know…but I will make it up to you. I promise. This chapter got long and I had to divide it up.
