Chapter 144: Shingles

Note: Usually the general idea of eating.
Characters: Jakotsu and the pastor
Summary: Part 144 of The Seven: Wanted Dead or Alive.
Prompt Summary: The pastor explains the next part of their job.
Though it took him a few tries, eventually the nail went in all of the way and Jakotsu quickly started on the second one. Once finished, he glanced up, not really surprised to find the pastor already finished and waiting on him. “Board!” the pastor called down with a smile and soon another one is being held up to them. This time, as Jakotsu began lowering it over the hole, the pastor grabbed onto it at the other end once it was within his reach.
With both of them lowering it, it made far less noise when it reached the roof. Without a word, the two of them began hammering their sides down. Soon they had it finished and moved onto the next board; and the next. Once the fifth board had been nailed in place, the pastor stood up and tested their work by lightly touching the boards with his toes. When it held, he applied a bit more pressure onto the boards until he was finally standing directly on them when they showed no signs of collapsing.“That'll do,” he decided with a nod of his head before taking his seat once more and calling down, “Shingles!” After a full minute had passed, the owner climbed up the ladder and handed a bucket of shingles to Jakotsu. Placing them beside the bucket of nails without having to be told to, Jakotsu turned his attention back to the pastor as he started speaking. “This part is pretty simple. All we have to do is follow the pattern of shingles that are already there.“You start with the top row of missing ones as they get placed on top of each other as you go down. Put them wherever shingles are missing and do horizontal rows instead of vertical ones; it makes it a whole lot easier since each row is slightly off from the ones around it. It's something to do with the angle of the roof. Put a small amount of clay where you are going to put the shingle and add one nail into the center of it,” the pastor instructed even as the owner came up the ladder again and handed Jakotsu another bucket.“Only put enough of the clay down for one shingle at a time until you are able to pick up the pace because it dries pretty quickly and the nail might crack it if added once it is dried. Once we get these done, we'll stop for lunch and move on to the barn. It'll be pretty much the same work needed there as well.”
