Chapter Three, Part IV -

Shippou looked like a regular eighteen-year old male, with orange-red hair he wore shorter than his 'father' and his 'uncle'. It was still longer than usual though, coming to his chin when unconfined. He was tall for his 'supposed' age and lithely built. Even after growing up so much, his 'father' still called him 'runt' when he felt like it.

Shippou smiled sadly as he remembered his relationship with his 'father' back then. He was too young, too impulsive and too hard-headed when he blamed his 'father' for his 'mother's' death. When Inuyasha returned to Kaede's village without Kagome, Sango or Miroku, Shippou naturally thought the worst: Naraku succeeded in killing them. He was filled with hatred then, wanting to get revenge for what Naraku did to his 'mother' and his friends. Inuyasha told him Naraku was already dead, that they were the ones who succeeded in defeating him. When Shippou asked him in confusion as to why they weren't with him, Inuyasha explained Midoriko's last request to them. Shippou thought it was alright, Kagome could always come through the magic well anyway. Inuyasha dashed his hope when he told him they weren't going to see Kagome for a very long time. He also admitted the fact that he failed to protect Kagome, and that she died trying to protect him instead. He asked[no, he begged[for Shippou's forgiveness and told him he was going to take care of him after that.

But Shippou's hatred was now directed at Inuyasha. He blamed him for Kagome's death, even screaming at the top of his lungs how he hated the hanyou and that he didn't deserve Kagome's love because he failed her. Shippou didn't know Inuyasha already blamed himself for Kagome's death, and that his words were another knife twisting at the hanyou's heart. Sesshomaru wanted to leave him with Kaede, knowing his presence would become a torment of sort to Inuyasha, but Inuyasha was adamant in having Shippou come with them to the Western Lands. The taiyoukai relented, but his patience wore thin by Shippou's attitude and treatment of his brother.

Shippou was deliberately rude, refusing to call Inuyasha by his name anymore. He settled on 'hanyou' instead, knowing how much Inuyasha hated being called that. But Inuyasha endured his insult, not even correcting Shippou even once. He was also nasty and abominable, throwing tantrums at every turn and blaming Inuyasha as responsible for it. Looking back now, he couldn't believe what a brat he was at the time. Inuyasha tolerated all of those, thinking Shippou's blame was not misplaced, and that it was Shippou's right to behave like that towards him since he did fail Kagome and Shippou both. Inuyasha vowed he'd be a good 'father' to Shippou in atonement for what he's done. Shippou, on the other hand, never gave him any chance as the fox demon continued to torture him.

Sesshomaru was set against Inuyasha's decisions from the very beginning, especially when Shippou proved him right in his disapproval at every turn. He berated Inuyasha constantly when it came to Shippou, telling him he shouldn't allow the fox-demon to be so disrespectful of him. He was the son of THE Inutaisho, for God's sake, and fiercer demons have been killed by Inuyasha just by insulting him alone. Shippou was by far the worst of the lot, deliberately crossing the line everytime. Sesshomaru's patience snapped one evening as they were dining in celebration of having taken the Western Lands successfully. Shippou behaved like the brat that he was, and worse, did it in front of the many demons who allied themselves recently to the sons of the Inutaisho. He disgraced Inuyasha completely and Sesshomaru couldn't take it anymore. He decided to take matters into his own hands, vowing that if his brother wasn't up to the task of disciplining the brat, then he'll be the one to put the fear of God's[or rather his[ wrath upon him.

Sesshomaru ordered Jaken to take Rin to her rooms, not wanting her to see what he was going to do to her friend. The moment Rin left the room, Sesshomaru seized Shippou and flew high into the sky. He gave orders to every youkai present to detain his brother. Shippou was terrified, not knowing what Sesshomaru will do to him. He knew the taiyoukai hated him for what he was doing to Inuyasha, and he'll probably kill him for it.

"Do you see?"

Shippou blinked in confusion at what Sesshomaru asked him in a cold voice masked in fury.

"Look down below. Tell me what you see, brat,"

Shippou obeyed, and what he saw astounded him. There was Inuyasha trying desperately to get to him. It looked like he took on the whole lot of the youkai, and has beaten half of them already in his frenzy to snatch Shippou back from his brother.

"Damn it, get out of the way! I won't hesitate to kill all of you if you don't move your asses right now! Sesshomaru! Put Shippou down now or else!"
