Death Of A Smile

*Everything was dark. Why? Why couldn’t she see anything…? Traces of warm liquid began to flow down her hand and drip onto her upturned face. Slowly, she opened her eyes only to see she was covered in blood, yet she didn’t hurt anywhere on her body. Quickly looking around, all she could hear was an evil laugh and a trail of blood that led to a body laying on the floor. She crawled over to the body and hesitantly turned the body over. Her brown eyes were wide with panic and fear as the dead body stared up at her out of lifeless eyes.

“Kagome…”

Kagome quickly shut her eyes and grabbed her ears. Why? Why did this happen? How did it happen?

”Kagome…”

Kagome quickly opened her eyes when she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder. Once more, she was kneeling in a beautiful field, picking herbs with Sango. The demon slayer noticed the startled look on Kagome’s face and how her skin suddenly paled.

“Kagome-Chan, are you alright?”

Kagome nodded and released a relieved sigh and smiled at Sango.

“Yes, I’m fine, Sango-Chan. Sorry to worry you.”

”Is it the heat?”

”Oh, no! The weather is just beautiful! I guess I just zoned out a little bit.”

“Well, I’ll go get us some water anyway. Would you please watch Hatsukyo for me while I go to the stream.”

”Of course.”

Sango turned around, revealing the sleeping baby on her back. Kagome sat with her legs folded under her, and removed the sleeping baby from the carrier, holding him gently in her arms. The baby was very beautiful, with fair skin just like Sango, and black hair just like her husband, Miroku.

“I bet when Hatsukyo gets older, he’ll be a little heartbreaker.” Kagome giggled.

”Kamisama, Kagome-Chan, please don’t encourage him. I don’t know what I’d do if he turned out like his father.” Sango giggled.

Hatsukyo stirred in Kagome’s arms before opening his eyelids which revealed his beautiful blue-gray eyes. Sango stretched a little. It definitely felt good to have him off her back, quite literally. Hatsukyo didn’t seem to mind when Sango left for water, either. Kagome giggled, gently tapping his little nose with her finger. He smiled and took a-hold of her finger, holding onto it and Kagome could only giggle. She wondered if her sister’s child would be this adorable when it was born. She’d only been in the past for three days and things had been very peaceful despite the absence of Inuyasha and Miroku, the more infants and children surrounded her, the more she began to think of her own children. She could see herself holding a little child of her own several years for now, but she quickly pushed the image out of her mind when her mind’s eye saw the child she imagined had soft, silver hair, just like…Inuyasha. For a moment, as she rocked the child back to sleep, she allowed her mind to drift to a happier fantasy; where Inuyasha was holding her hand as she brought their first child into the world and holding the beautiful child in his arms afterwards. Kagome’s mind drifted to Inuyasha carrying the child on his shoulders, through the snow as they walked to the store and to him trying to bathe the little squealing bundle of joy. Kagome giggled, imagining the child getting Inuyasha soaking wet and Inuyasha sulking afterwards. After the child’s bath, Kagome watched Inuyasha tuck the baby in and hum to the child.

“Kyuu…!”

Kagome was quickly brought of her reverie by the real bundle of joy in her arms. Obviously she’d stopped rocking him and he wasn’t too pleased about it. Sango crested the hill with water for them to share and giggled when she saw her son playing with the red sash that completed Kagome’s school uniform.

“He really likes you, Kagome-Chan.”

”I’m glad. One day…maybe I’ll have a child too.”

Sango went to pulling herbs once more and simply smiled.

”With Inuyasha?”

Sango glanced up in time to see the blush on Kagome’s face, but she didn’t relent from smiling. Why deny it? The only one she had to keep her feelings secret from were Kikyou and Inuyasha.

“That’d be very wonderful, but Inuyasha is my sister’s husband and…”

“Kagome-Chan, you have the softest look in your eye whenever you speak about him. I only met you a few days ago, but I know the feelings you have for him isn’t just infatuation. Is that why you were so sad to see him go?”

Kagome nodded, setting the baby down on the soft grass. He crawled over to a tulip where a caterpillar was inching up the stem slowly. Sango could only smile softly.

“Kagome-Chan...I understand it’s hard to see this happen between your sister and Inuyasha, but you not interfering this entire time shows you’re a very selfless person. You even let Inuyasha go off to battle with Naraku without shedding a tear. Kikyou cried, though.”

”Why didn’t you stop Miroku from going? You didn’t cry, either.”

Sango sighed, watching her child try and follow the movements of the caterpillar.

“I…want Naraku dead and Miroku promises me he’ll avenge my family…and myself.”

“Sango…what happened between you and Naraku?”

Thought it was painful to talk about Sango just sighed and stared up at the sky.

“Naraku slaughtered my village and my family. I’m the only one of my kind left. Then, to add insult to injury…he…well…you know…”

Kagome’s eyes widened in horror and she was suddenly struck with the urge to slaughter Naraku herself. Sango sighed a little more.

“I got pregnant and I considered killing myself to end it all. I was going to throw myself off of a waterfall, when Miroku stopped me. I didn’t know anything about him and he didn’t know anything about me, yet he somehow convinced me to live. He was a traveling monk at the time…He still is, but I knew he was what I needed in my life. He stayed with me in my village for a while, but…I had an accident. I miscarried the child and while I was at loss for the life of my own child, I was relieved. Miroku and I traveled together and even though he’s a complete pervert, I couldn’t stop being by his side. We eventually met Inuyasha and we realized we shared a common goal; to rid the world of Naraku.”

“Oh, Sango, I’m so sorry…” Kagome said, putting her hand on Sango’s.

“Don’t be. It happened a few years ago, after all. I believe I was maybe…sixteen or so.”

”But to have to go through that at such a young age…!”

”Kagome-Chan, I’m nineteen now and married to the love of my life. I even have an adorable…”

Sango saw Hatsukyo begin to crawl off once more. Sango smiled and picked up her son and placed him in her lap.

“…but troublesome son. The fact that I have all of this is because Miroku saved me and I found the will to live on after that. We all eventually find our reason to live. My reason is to live for my son and Miroku.”

The baby’s hands touched Sango’s nose and Sango turned to look at Kagome.

“Tell me, have you found your reason for life?”

“My reason for life…?”

Kagome looked at the herbs she’d collected. She didn’t need to think twice about her answer.

“I live for the hope that one day, Inuyasha will love me. Even if it’s a false hope, there isn’t anything more I’d wish for.”

”Kagome, it’s always good to have hope.”

“Sango, thanks…”

Kagome’s words stopped mid-sentence when she could faintly hear the large alarm bell ringing in the distance. Sango quickly looked towards the direction of the village. She could feel the tremors of the ground…

“Kagome-Chan, something is going on at the village! Come on, let’s go!”

”Coming!”

Kagome quickly gathered both baskets of herbs while Sango secured her son on her back. They hurried back to the village just in time to see a dark, purple miasma coming from the East. People were running into their huts as several demons attacked the normally peaceful village.

“What the…!?”

“N….N…”

Kagome looked at Sango, seeing the paralyzed look on her face.

“Sango…?”

”It’s Naraku!”

Kagome’s eyes widened as she watched the sky open up, revealing a terrifying being with several dragon tails, spiked armor and long, black hair. His chuckle was loud…familiar. Kagome realized she’d heard his laugh only once before. In her daydream…when someone had died.

“He’s here for Kikyou! Where is she?!” Kagome quickly looked around.

“Kikyou-Sama went to challenge him!” a villager yelled.

“WHAT!?”

Kagome wasted no time in gathering her bow and arrows.

“Sango, stay here! Protect the village if you can! I’m going after Kikyou!”

“It’s only a few demons as a distraction! We can handle those! Now go!”

“Lady Kagome…!”

One of the men of the village offered her a horse to ride upon. Kagome had never fired an arrow while moving, but she was going to have to learn. As Kagome rode off, she could see Naraku had landed a few meters outside of the village. Kagome rode the horse at a killing place until she saw Kikyou standing there, her Naginata of the Shadowed Moon held tightly in her hand. Kagome jumped off the horse, running towards her sister.

“KIKYOU!”

Kikyou quickly turned around, seeing Kagome running towards her. For the first time in her life, Kagome saw the emotion of fear in her sister’s eyes.

“Kikyou, watch out!”

Kagome fired an arrow past Kikyou, stopping a tentacle dead in it’s tracks. Kagome sighed in relief, glad her training was finally paying off. She ran next to Kagome, her sister glaring at her slightly.

“What do you think you’re doing, Kagome?! Naraku is after me and I will not endanger yourself like this!”

“And I’m not going to let you endanger your life or your unborn child’s!”

Both sisters turned their heads in the direction of Naraku’s dark chuckle.

“Well, well…this is certainly a surprise. I had no idea that the lovely Kikyou had an even lovelier sister.”

“Naraku, you will not touch her.” Kikyou said, her voice cold as ice.

”Heh heh heh…Now, now, Kikyou, jealousy doesn’t suit you. Then again, marrying an idiot half-breed who is probably still fighting that demon puppet back in the east wasn’t a smart move on your end either.”

“A demon puppet…?” Kagome quickly looked at Kikyou.

“We’ve been tricked. Naraku laid a trap for Inuyasha and Miroku and decided to attack here while they were gone. Uncouth…” Kikyou growled.

“You will be mine, Kikyou!”

Naraku sent several tentacles towards Kikyou and Kagome.

“Kagome, stay behind me!”

Kikyou pushed Kagome out of the way, sending her flying to the ground. Kagome looked up in time to see Kikyou rapidly spinning her Naginata in front of her, deflecting the tentacles in a blaze of bright red lights. Kagome was in awe of her sister’s power; never had she seen Kikyou use such energy. Kikyou ceased the spinning when the tentacles ceased to exist. Naraku could only chuckle.

“Not bad for an amateur.”

”How dare you call her such!” Kagome yelled, standing up.

Kikyou bit her lip in slight irritation. She couldn’t fight Naraku and protect Kagome and herself at the same time; it’d put too much stress on her body, but more importantly, the baby. Naraku’s arm glowed for a moment taking the form of a pure white Naginata with a blinding flash.

“As long as I have the legendary Hikarikage Naginata, all attacks you use against me are powerless!”

Both Kikyou and Kagome stared in awe. Kagome remembered how Kikyou and Inuyasha had explained to her about the Hikarikage Naginata or ‘The Naginata of the Shadowed Light; it was a special weapon created by Amaterasu-Omikami; the sun goddess and the opposite of Kikyou’s own weapon; the Naginata of the Shadowed Moon, said to have been created by the moon goddess Kaguya.

“Naraku! HOW?! How did you get that?!”

“It wasn’t hard to find, my darling Kikyou. Shall we test it’s powers?”

With an effortless strength, Naraku thrust the blade of the Hikarikage into the ground. The ground violently shook before a thunderous beam of light charged directly at Kikyou and Kagome. Kagome threw herself in front of Kikyou, wrapping her arms tightly around her sister while trying to put up a barrier at the same time. The beam bounced off of the weak barrier with enough force to send Kikyou and Kagome flying backwards. Kagome grit her teeth as she felt the blades of light cut at her back. She quickly turned on her back, mid-air, so she’d take the brunt of the fall, her arms still around Kikyou. When Kagome landed on her freshly burned back, it took every ounce of power she had to keep from screaming. Kikyou groaned, looking at Kagome laying beneath her. Kagome grit her teeth tightly and her breathing was labored.

“Kagome! Kagome, are you alright?”

Kagome quickly opened her eyes and grabbed Kikyo once more, rolling off to the side, just in time to avoid a spiked tentacle impaling the both of them. Ignoring her pain, Kagome quickly stood up and grabbed Kikyou’s hand and began running, trying to put some distance between them and the oncoming tentacle. Kagome quickly grabbed an fired it, dissecting the tentacle from Naraku’s body. Kagome quickly turned to look at Kikyou, the look of worry and concern on her elder’s sister face nothing short of overwhelming.

“Kagome, are you alright?! Your back…!”

“I’ll…be fine. Just go! I can handle him!”

”You cannot! I will be forever damned if I let something happened to you!”

”And so will I!” Kagome replied, turning her back on Kikyou to face Naraku’s oncoming presence.

“Kagome…” Kikyou’s eyes widened.

Kagome grabbed an arrow out of her quiver and aimed it at Naraku’s body.

“I made a promise…I promised Inuyasha I’d protect you! Kikyou, I’ll die protecting you, if I must! As long as you’re safe! Don’t let me die in vain, dammit, and get to safety!”

And for the first time since she was a little girl…tears. Tears fell down Kikyou’s cheek as she stood behind Kagome, watching her injured younger sister do all she can to protect her. She who’d been protecting was now being protected.

“Kagome…”

“I’ve had enough of this foolishness!”

Naraku sent another spiked tentacle towards Kagome, just as she’d fired her arrow. With no arrow to launch, Kagome gripped her bow, turned it horizontally and Kikyou watched as the tentacle slammed against a bright, purple barrier. Kagome looked over her shoulder, sweat beginning to pour down her brow.

“Well?! What are you waiting for?! Get out of here! Protect the village!”

Kikyou took a step backwards before running back towards the village. Kagome maintained her focus exerting even more power than before as Naraku sent all he had against the barrier. In the distance, Kagome could see the entire village engulfed in a bright, pink light.

“Thank goodness…she’s safe…”

The barrier fell, along with Kagome, void of energy. She fell to her knees, looking at Naraku as he advanced upon her. Even as he stood over her, Kagome showed no fear. Naraku smirked as he kneeled down, cupping her chin in his hand.

“Well, well, well…it seems you possess more power than your elder sister. Maybe I should take you as my bride and not her. I can do nothing with a whore of a woman who lowered herself to be impregnated by a lowly half-demon…”

Kagome bit into Naraku’s hand, feeling his flesh tear between her teeth. Naraku growled, ignoring the pain in his hand.

“Why…? Why do you still defy me?”

“Because…” Kagome growled, her teeth digging deeper into his hand. “I won’t let you talk about Kikyou OR Inuyasha that way!”

Effortlessly, with Kagome still biting into his hand, he stood up. She shook his hand as if flicking off drops of water, but it was enough to send Kagome flying backwards into a great oak tree. Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion for Kagome; from her body flying through the air, to it colliding painful with the tree and even the blood coming from her mouth. With tears in her eyes, Kagome looked up, seeing Naraku walking towards her.

“Submit to me woman, and I will not have to use more…forceful means on you.”

He kneeled in front of her taking a hold of her beautiful black hair and yanking her face forward.

“You’re so beautiful and your body is untouched by any man…”

“Save your breath…I’m saving myself!”

“For me? You shouldn’t have…” he chuckled.

“Get…away…from me…!”

She grabbed his shoulders and used all of the remaining energy in her body to blast Naraku’s body away from her and into small bits of flesh. Kagome gasped for air, looking around frantically. She was in an unfamiliar forest, with one of the most evil demons alive…and he was slowly regrouping himself in oozing chunks of flesh. Standing up, Kagome hurried through the forest, not carrying where she went as long as that demon stayed away from the village. She could hear the rapid rustling coming behind her, but didn’t expect the ground to explode under her, sending her flying forwards a good fifty feet. She landed violently, her body bleeding and near broken. She could hear his footsteps nearing and his voice chuckle, no, laugh at her.

“Pathetic. If you keep this up, I’ll have no choice but to kill you and then I’ll have to go after Kikyou again. Such an inconvenience.”

Kagome’s eyes flew open and she clawed the ground as she forced herself up. She was positive she’d broken a few ribs, she knew there were bruises and cuts on her body, and the burn on her back was getting almost unbearable, but…

“I…I’ll be…damned if…you…hurt Kikyou…”

Kagome forced her body into a sitting position and her head snapped up to look Naraku dead in the eye.

“Especially you!”

She grabbed his left arm, biting into it viciously.

“Back to the biting game again…”

“I…want…my…weapon…” she growled.

“Your longbow is…”

”In the hands of it’s original owner.” A cold voice replied.

Naraku turned in time to be pierced by an arrow that hit him directly in his chest. He groaned, growling like a mad dog and glared at Kikyou standing there.

“Kikyou…! You bitch…!”

“Naraku…I’d be the last thing to worry about if I were you.” Kikyou smirked.

“What do you…?”

With all of the strength she could muster, Kagome grabbed ahold of Naraku’s arm where she’d bitten and sent her remaining energy into the wound. He groaned in pain and Kikyou watched as his arm separated from his body in a blood display of veins and muscle tissue. With the severed arm in her hand, Kagome began to glow a beautiful, sky-blue color. Naraku took a step backwards as Kagome’s eyes opened to reveal a pure white color.

“When I meant my weapon…I mean the legendary Naginata of the Shadowed Sun! Now, discard this disgusting demonic form of an arm and take your true form!”

The ground began to shake violently as the arm exploded and took the beautiful shape of a golden staff with pure white blade on the end of it. Kagome twirled it around her head before pointing it at Naraku. Kikyo snapped her fingers and the longbow took the form of her own Naginata of the Shadowed moon. Naraku looked between Kikyou and Kagome; both held the legendary Naginatas of both the Sun Goddess and Moon Goddess and he knew one false step and he knew he was done for. Kagome only prayed that the Hikarikage continued to lend it’s power to her. She knew that the second she let it go, she’d fall to the floor, completely spent.

“Heh….heh heh heh heh heh…do you really think I can defeated so easily?” Naraku growled.

Kikyou and Kagome tightened their grips on their respective weapons.

”I AM INDESTRUCTIBLE!”

The ground began to shake violently as he roared, his eyes turning a deadly red color.

”Stop…!”

Kagome charged at Naraku with the Hikarikage, yelling the entire time. Naraku summed a spiked tentacle from the ground, sending it to attack Kagome. She gasped, took a step backwards and lost her balance completely. Naraku sent the tentacle at the base of several nearby trees, slicing them all…watching as the prepared to fall upon Kagome and finally kill her once and for all. Kagome sat there, paralyzed with fear.

“No…!”

Kagome looked up in time to see Kikyou discard her weapon and once more, as if it were all happening in slow motion, she ran past Naraku and towards her, her arms outstretched. A darkness quickly settled over Kagome and Naraku watched as four heavy trees landed upon the two sisters.

“Mortal women…what good are they…?”

Naraku sighed a little. He knew he sort of defeated his purpose when he killed Kikyou, especially since his little trek to the west was all for the sake of taking her for himself. He supposed the only thing he could do was to kill that pathetic half-demon and that monk. Though…once he found out his lover was dead, Inuyasha just might kill himself and save him the trouble. He’d barely taken two steps when he heard a slight groaning. He turned around, his eyes wide as saucers when he saw Kagome emerge from the bushes…just past where the trees had fallen.

“How…?!?!” Naraku growled.

Kagome hurried over to the fallen trees, grabbing her wounded arm that she’d injured when Kikyou forced her out of the way. Kagome’s eyes widened when she saw Kikyou laying on her stomach, crushed beneath one of the massive trees she’d failed to avoid when she pushed Kagome out of the way. With her breathing labored, Kikyou saw Kagome drop to her knees in front of her, tears streaming down her face.

“Ki…Kikyou…! Oh…! No! Hold on…!”

Kikyou coughed, blood mixing with salvia and trailing down the corner of her mouth. With a strength she didn’t even know she possessed, Kagome pulled Kikyou from under the tree, holding her elder sister’s broken body in her arms. Kikyou’s hair was tattered and torn and there was blood streaming down her legs.

“Oh God…!!! Kikyou, I…!”

“K…K…Kagome…listen to me and listen to me well…”

With a bloodied hand, she raised it to Kagome’s cheeks and mustered a smile.

“I…am so glad you are safe…I’m glad I could protect you, Kagome-Chan…”

“Kikyou, no! Don’t talk like that…!” Kagome sobbed.

“Don’t let him see your tears…Kagome…don’t let him see your weakness…I am not long for this world…and I only ask…”

Kikyou groaned, her eyes wide as another pain set in. She closed her eyes, tears streaming down her cheek. She knew her child had lost it’s life when the tree had crushed her. She could imagine her child calling to her from a beautiful, white void.

“That scroll…the one I gave to you when you took over the shrine…please…look at it…when you get back to your…our…time.”

“Kikyou…” Kagome whimpered.

Kikyou grabbed Kagome’s head and forced her lips to her younger sister’s. Kagome’s eyes were wide with shock as she could feel a warm power seeping into her body. Kikyou broke the kiss with a gentle smile.

“Live…Kagome and I…want you to tell Inuyasha…that I am sorry…and Kagome, my Imoto-Chan…I want you to know that I love you more than anything…and I want you…to live. Promise me…you’ll live…”

Kagome nodded, tears streaming down her face harder.

“I promise…”

“That’s…my brave, strong…bratty little sister…” Kikyou smiled.

Kikyou was struck with another pain before an eternal darkness settled over her. Kagome’s eyes widened as Kikyou stilled in her arms.

“Kikyou…! Kikyou…! Wake up! Answer me…!”

Kagome pressed Kikyou’s head to her chest and whimpered, trying her hardest to stifle her tears. She laid Kikyou’s head gently down on the ground and stood up, looking at Naraku who seemed all but amused by the dramatic display of death.

“Well, well…you’re still alive, I see. It’s a pity your sister didn’t share in your fate…”

With her head lowered, Kagome grabbed the Naginata of the Shadowed Moon and the Naginata of The Shadowed Sun.

”Naraku…”

Both Naginatas began to glow brightly and Kagome raised her head, tears streaming down her face.

”DIE!”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

(Oh PLEASE don’t kill me for the cliffie…*feels like crying* I SO didn’t want Kikyou to die, dammit! *is in mourning* AND she lost the baby?! GOD, I’M SO MORBID! Then again, I had planned Kikyou on dying from the very beginning. Believe it or not, I was gonna have Naraku spear her with a tentacle just like in the anime and she was going to die that way, buuuuut…I figured getting crushed by trees works too, lol. Anyway, only two or three more chappies left! Thanks for the reviews and PLEASE don’t kill me!!!! XD And I believe we all know who I’m talking too LOL)
