Chapter 14
Kagome woke up and found herself alone in Sesshoumaru’s bed. She pouted a bit, but found a note.
the time you awaken, I will have left for work. Sleep in, and enjoy yourself, but do not forget to pack. We leave tomorrow for our holiday.
Kagome smiled to herself, ‘It’s not exactly romantic, but what can a girl expect from him? At least I know things aren’t awkward between us.’
She sighed in content, reminiscing about last night with him. He had made love to her several times after. She was surprised that she was not exhausted.
‘In fact, I feel quite relaxed. No wonder why he would have wanted me to take the day off. I look like the cat got the cream,’ she mused, looking at her reflection in the floor length mirror near the bed.
“What to wear? He destroyed my dress,” she giggled, and then spotted a black silk yukata. “How convenient! Did he leave it for me?”
She picked up the garment and slid it over he shoulders. She tugged the lapel up to her nose and smelled it.
‘It smells like him,’ she sighed, and then made her way out of the bedroom.
As she exited, she saw Jaken.
“Good morning, Kagome. Lord Sesshoumaru has instructed that a nice breakfast was made for you. I have already procured your luggage and it is on your bed, that way you may pack for your trip,” he informed her.
“Thank you, Jaken. That was very nice of you,” she smiled, and then made her way to the kitchen.
Kagome wondered how the vacation would be between her and Sesshoumaru. She felt giddy, but not overly so as she still held back. She did not want to immerse her total heart because she had done that before and it had not turned out well. She felt lucky enough that Sesshoumaru had cared to bring her under his wing and get her back on the right path. She had felt so numb since her last visit to Sengoku Jidai that he broke through her mundane life and awakened her.
She ate her breakfast, and then returned to her room to pack. As Jaken had said, he had her luggage already open on her bed, ready to be packed. She would have gotten dressed, but she relished the smell of the black yukata.
“I’ll just change after I pack and get a bath,” she said to herself as she began.
Meanwhile, Sesshoumaru was having a difficult time at work. He could not read a single report without thinking of Kagome in the throws of passion.
“To delegate this work, or not to delegate it?” he asked himself out loud, slighty amused. “Hn.”
He pressed the button on his phone and then dialed an extension to his vice president of operations. When the other line picked up, he said, “I have some work to do that will take me away from the office. You will pick up the reports on my desk and complete them before I come back from vacation.”
He hung up without getting a response. He expected all of his employees to hop when he told them to. It was not often that he delegated his own work to his vice president, so this was a relief on him, especially since he had been distracted. He then dialed the house.
Jaken picked up and answered, “Taisho residence. How may I help you?”
“Get Kagome on the phone,” he said, leaving no room for chat.
He listened as the imp scurried to retrieve the spitfire miko.
“Sesshoumaru?” Kagome asked.
“Indeed it is, little miko,” he replied. “You will be ready for an early dinner tonight. I have decided to take the rest of the day off. I find myself becoming distracted far too much.”
“Why?” Kagome wondered.
“Perhaps a certain siren with long legs that had once fallen in my lap at a strip club has ensared me?” he teased.
“Oh really,” Kagome laughed lightly, “That must be a big problem for the mighty dog demon.”
“Hn,” he said, and then hung up.
He was sure by the time she realized that he had hung up that she had said something. He also imagined that she might be mad, but it was nothing unusual.
‘It is easy to bait her and when she is angry, she looks gloriously sexy.’
Kagome stared at the phone and then huffed before handing it back to Jaken.
“He always does that,” she growled.
“Does what?” Jaken asked.
“Hang up on you,” she replied, highly annoyed.
“Lord Sesshoumaru keeps his own council on his doings. He speaks only when necessary. I suggest to become use to this if you wish to remain around here,” Jaken teased, though his voice remained the grumpy tone she was familiar with every day.
Kagome laughed and just left Jaken.
“Now, what to wear?” she wondered. “He just said we would go to dinner, but he didn’t say if it were going to be fancy. Better just dress up just in case.”
She was going to choose one of her Gucci dresses that zipped in the back, but chose a Versace that was in two pieces and had no zippers or buttons. The dress was a navy blue that had navy sequins to catch the light. The top reminded her of a modern style Grecian top that left the sleeves open on the sides. She had a nude colored camasol tube top and a nude strapless bra so it gave the illusion that she had nothing underneath, but did not She knew Sesshoumaru would just tell her that he would buy her another if he destroyed it, but she hated knowing how much the dress was worth. Of course, she loved the dresses. The fabrics slid over her and hugged her beautifully. She had never worn such a garment. Not even the one fine silk kimono that her mother got her long ago could match up to the feel of the dresses that she now owned.
Just thinking about that made her frown and sit down, holding the Versace dress on a hanger. She loved the luxury, but it really was not her. She had not grown up to a wealthy family. Her simple shrine dwelling family made due with the minimal and rarely bought anything expensive. Most of her belongings had either been reduced prices, hand-me-down, gifts from random visitors, or second-hand from thrift stores. Usually they spent for things needed for the shrine, and even that budget was extremely strained. Her brother was not living at the shrine either, as Sesshoumaru had decided to fund for a simple apartment close to the university. She had protested, and so had Souta, but the demon lord had been relentless. The final act in changing both of the Higurashi siblings’ minds was the incident that had happened to Kagome before Sesshoumaru had saved her.
Even though Kagome could go to school and had a job, she was always around Sesshoumaru. She felt he was way out of her league despite his ability to include her so generously into his life. And then when she had given herself to him last night, she really did love him. It was just that she wanted to do some things by herself.
“What is making you down, my dear?” Maya asked, startling Kagome.
Kagome looked up at the housekeeper and replied, “I’m sure you knew what went on between Sesshoumaru and I last night. It is kind of catching up on me. I know I love him, but for some time, I have only been around him. Are my feelings for real, or have I become infatuated because I am around him almost every day?”
“I see. That is a dilemma. Well, I think if you talk to Lord Sesshoumaru and work something out with him, I am sure you will find the answer. I know both of you care for each other on some level. I have not seen our lord act like this with anyone for many years. My suggestion is to take this vacation with him and afterwards, try some new things. Go out. I am not young and I can go with you if you want to go somewhere. I do know that he would not want you to be by yourself, so you must at least be with someone who can relay anything if you get into trouble. I remember the night Lord Sesshoumaru had brought you in. You were such a frightful mess that I almost thought it would take a miracle to get you to function normally. Just remember, Lord Sesshoumaru has promised his protection over you. If you cannot communicate with him, then you are not allowing him to know what you need. If it is space, I am sure he will allow it,” Maya assured, brushing a lock of Kagome’s hair behind her ear.
Kagome smiled at Maya and replied, “You are right. Why am I being so glum about it? It is just Sesshoumaru. Thanks Maya.”
“You are most welcome, Kagome. I actually came in here to inform you that Lord Sesshoumaru has arrived. I was surprised to see that you had not already dressed yourself. Since I see that your bags are packed, I will take those, and also inform him that you will need a few more minutes to get ready,” she said, and then took the raven-haired girl’s luggage, leaving Kagome to get ready.
Kagome took the dress and put each piece on carefully. She chose a simple silver colored four-inch heel crisscross sandal. As for makeup, she really saw no need for it, but only applied mascara and lightly tinted lip-gloss. Once she was satisfied with her attired, she took a deep breath and departed the room to meet Sesshoumaru.
She only hoped he was not hurt with how she felt, but she wanted to make sure that her feelings were true, even if she thought he did not feel for her on the same level.
