Chapter Fourteen: To be or not to be
Haruki entered the room to find Shippo asleep with Chiyoko lovingly wrapped in his arms. They looked so peaceful as if this was the way it was suppose to be. It was the first time since they had been kids that Haruki could remember either of his friends looking this happy. Unfortunately for them, Shippo had a class to teach, which meant even though they had less then three hours of sleep it was time to get up and face reality.
“Hey, lovebirds it’s time to wake up. It’s nine o’clock.”
Shippo smiled upon opening his eyes and seeing Chiyoko’s head laying on his chest. He thought any moment he would wake up and she would disappear. Holding on a bit tighter Shippo said good morning to the beauty by his side.
“Good morning Shippo.” Chiyoko said back as she dreamily stared into his eyes.
Haruki stood there watching the two before turning around and walking out the door. “By the way breakfast is done!” He shouted from the kitchen.
It had been almost fifteen minutes before either of the two had joined Haruki for the first meal of the day.
“Good morning Haruki.” Chiyoko said as she reached the table and sat down. “I hope I’m not intruding on breakfast.”
“Of course not, I knew you were here when I woke up this morning so I made enough for three.”
“Oh.” Chiyoko hoped that Haruki didn’t get the wrong idea about her sleeping in the same bed as Shippo. “We didn’t…”
“He knows.” Shippo interrupted as he sat down. “Unlike you he can smell that sort of thing, so you have nothing to be worried about.”
“Hey, it’s not my fault I can’t smell like a youkai should. I guess I’m just more human in that aspect.” Chiyoko quickly came to her defense.
Using a loving tone Shippo continued the conversation. “Actually, it is your fault. You choose not to use the youkai in you. You have both priestess and youkai powers that are really strong in you, but for some reason you hold back. Don’t get me wrong you’re a good fighter and hunter but other then that you just have no idea how to use your powers. Right Haruki?”
Haruki finished chewing and swallowed his food before answering. “Yeah, Shippo’s right Chiyoko. I can sense your powers too. Even your mom and dad have tried to help bring them out but you just won’t let it out. It’s like you don’t want them or your scared to use them.”
“I’m not scared to use them. I guess I’m just unsure of myself. When I go down in the well I don’t want to hurt any of you with my priestess powers. And then at the same time, I want to fit in at school and if I let my youkai out everyone will think I’m some sort of freak. It’s bad enough that they look at me differently because of the silver in my hair and my fangs.”
Shippo grabbed her hand from across the table and gave it a little squeeze. “Chiyoko, if they don’t like you for who you are then screw them. And you don’t need to worry about hurting any of us; you’ll learn to control your powers.”
“What if I don’t want to learn and I just want to stay the way I am? I don’t like my youkai powers sometimes. It’s too strong and sometimes…” Chiyoko looked down at her barely touched food. Why did she need her stupid youkai powers anyway? It wasn’t worth it to smell and see really good if it meant that she would have to deal with the aggressive side of her.
Haruki cleared his throat. “Uhm… I guess this means you and Shippo haven’t spoken about this yet. Maybe, I should go.” He sounded almost embarrassed. Gathering his plates Chiyoko grabbed onto his arm.
“What do you mean we haven’t spoken about this yet? We’re talking about this now.”
Shippo quickly came to Haruki’s rescue or at least tried. “Really, we don’t need him here for this discussion. In fact I was just about to ask him to take over your dad’s class for me this morning.”
“I want you to stay Haruki, you’re my friend. Now tell me what you meant by we haven’t spoke about this, because I don’t see what’s wrong with me not wanting to bring out my youkai.”
Sitting back down at the table Haruki looked over at Shippo and back at Chiyoko. Blushing he began “Well… well… you see. Ahh. You know, Yin and I got married about, I don’t know six months after you left. We had a traditional wedding kind of like your parents did. In fact they had two weddings, one in each time period. Theirs was really nice remember it Shippo? If I’m not mistaken you were at both of them right?” There was a pleading in his voice for him to be saved from this conversation.
Chiyoko looked at him wondering why in the world Haruki was talking about her parents wedding. What did it have to do with the original topic?
Shippo finished his meal and pushed his plate to the side. “Haruki, please go open my school for me. I don’t want my students leaving. I’ll see you later this evening.”
With that said Haruki took his leave before there could be any rebuke.
Shippo waited until Chiyoko was done with her food before he continued to explain what was going on. “Okay, I want to ask you a question. Why don’t you let your youkai out?”
“I told you already.”
“No. You’re not telling me everything. Up until you were eight you had a good balance on both powers. You could see, hear, smell, and act faster then any of us. Even though you were only one third youkai you had the ability to transform into a dog demon if you had wanted to. A hanyou can’t even do that, but your priestess powers made up for your missing youkai powers. Chiyoko, not even your brother and sister are as strong as you were. What happened? Why did you suddenly stop using your powers?”
Chiyoko looked down at the table in shame. It had been so long ago since she had last thought about it, and admitting this to Shippo was hard. What would he think of her once he knew the truth?
“I liked your tail so much I wanted one of my own. I was at home one day and I stood in front of the mirror trying to use my powers to make one for myself. I was trying so hard and couldn’t do it. The more I tried the angrier I got that I couldn’t do it. I got so mad I lost control of myself. I saw my eyes turn red and I looked distorted. I couldn’t control what was happening to my body. I only wanted a tail. Instead my whole bottom half turned into a dog demon, like how you and the others use to look.
The only feelings I had was that of a monster. I tried to change back but I couldn’t because the youkai powers were too strong. I thought I was going to stay like that forever. Could you imagine what the kids at school would have done if I would have came to school as a mad half dog. Finally I was able to find a piece of me that wasn’t feeling aggressive. I concentrated as hard as I could just like my mom taught me to do. I was filled with a tremendous pain through out my entire body. The next thing I knew I woke up the next morning on the floor in front of the mirror and I was back to normal. It was the last time I used any of my powers.”
It was a secret no one had ever known about. It was one she had tried to erase from her mind. From that day forward Chiyoko had made believe she was just like Yin, a human with great warrior abilities. It was easier that way. Even though both for her parents trained with her she simply did the bare minimum with her powers and planned on keeping it that way.
“Chiyoko, you can’t let one bad experience mess up your life.”
“I’m not. Truth is I don’t need my youkai part. Sure I’ll live longer but other then that I don’t need it.”
“That’s not entirely true. Answer me this, if I find a way to make you mine would you want for me to be your mate?”
“Of course.”
“Well, in order for that to happen you have to be in tune with your youkai part, other wise I could end up killing you. What Haruki was so terribly trying to explain was that youkai’s only marry in cases where there is no other choice. Hanyou’s and humans don’t have what it takes to go through a marking ceremony. And any full youkai who marries either has to be very careful when their involved sexually with their partner. Sexual relations can only happen if the youkai is not fully aroused other wise… it could be deadly. That’s the reason why Haruki though we would have had this talk by now.
It’s my responsibility to talk to you about the dangers of being with a full youkai. You have the choice to decide whether or not you want to be with me. Of course that’s only if I can win you from your father.”
Chiyoko sat there glaring into the deep green pools of Shippo’s eyes. No matter what dangers there was she knew with all her heart she wanted to be with Shippo. “If it was possible for Yin and Haruki to marry then there is no way I couldn’t go though it with you.”
“That’s what we’re worried about. You see Yin and Haruki were very happy. They loved each other a lot. Problem was there had been about six times that Yin almost died. Twice she took the risk in order to get pregnant. Haruki never forgave himself and we never talk about it, but once Yin got older it was harder for her to have relations with him because her body just couldn’t deal with it. He told her he no longer wanted to have sex with her but she insisted. He didn’t care that she was getting old, he just didn’t want to hurt her. In the end it was him who had to live with the regret of killing the woman he loved. She died a happy woman but he could never forgive himself. I couldn’t forgive myself either if anything ever happened to you because of me.”
Holding tight to his hands she asked “What other choice do we have. I’m not full youkai. I would take the chance just to be with you. Wouldn’t you take the chance for me?”
“NO! I can’t take the chance of marring you and then losing you to my passion. Chiyoko I can’t control my feelings for you. I can’t be in love with you and never be able to make love to you. It’s impossible.”
Hurt by his words Chiyoko started to cry. “Then what are we doing? If you don’t intend on making me your wife why are you trying to fight for me? Is it just to prove a point? Are you just trying to out do my father? No, maybe you want to win me as a trophy. Is that it Shippo?”
Getting up from the kitchen table Chiyoko headed back to his room to gather her things. Tears blurred her vision making it hard to see two feet in front of her. Shippo tenderly took hold of the crying girl and held her close to him. “Chiyoko, you don’t understand…”
“Oh I understand! I understand that you’re the biggest asshole on the plant.” She shouted out as she pushed him away from her. “You think just because I’m in love with you I’ll stand by and just be your friend forever. Well, you’re wrong!”
Her feelings were so hurt that slowly she began to lose control of herself. Not only was she yelling at him now but she had started hitting him on his chest in a fit. Each hit was harder then the last. Shippo just stood there taking each painful hit as it came.
“If we can’t be together then I don’t want anything to with you, because I just can’t handle it. I can’t.” She cried out.
Shippo took a step closer but all it did was make her angrier. Pushing him with all her might he fell to the floor.
“Don’t come next to me. Don’t touch me. I don’t need your comfort.” She yelled madly through her tears. “I thought I knew who you were Shippo. But you’re not the man I thought you were. Not the man you use to be. The Shippo I knew would never play with my feelings like this. I HATE YOU!”
She couldn’t understand what was happening to her. It was like all the love she had for him had turned to hatred. How could he not want to be with her after all the sacrifices he had made? It was his fault they couldn’t be together in the past and now he was rejecting her in this time too. Suddenly her tears were gone and a red hot heat took her over as she kicked him relentlessly in the gut.
“You pathetic son of a bitch, you can’t hurt me. I won’t let you.”
Coming to a stop Chiyoko glared down at Shippo. He was bent over holding his stomach in pain, but he reeked of confidence. Looking up at her a grin touched his lips. “That’s where you’re wrong. Just letting out a little bit of my youkai could kill you. Face it; we can’t be together because you’re too damn weak. If you want to blame someone blame yourself, not me.”
His arrogance made her infuriated. Leaning over she grabbed a hand full of hair and yanked his head back. “You think you’re something big, you stupid fox? That I should be scared of you? In reality it’s not me who has the problem. You’re solely to blame.” With her other hand she took hold of his face pressing her nails into his skin. She watched as red drops slid down his cheeks.
Closing her eyes she inhaled deeply. The smell of his blood was intoxicating. It made her feel wild. “You’re scared that you have no self control. How sad. And to think you spent all your life training and you can’t even control your youkai.”
Letting go of his hair she gripped tighter to his face. Blood trickled down her fingers as she lifted him to his feet. “Maybe you should have spent all your time doing something that you could do, like finger panting. Not even a retard like you could get that wrong. Then again…”
Pushing his face back Shippo lost balance and fell back onto the floor. “What’s the matter Chiyoko? Suddenly you became a real bitch. If I would have known earlier all I had to do was tell you I didn’t want to marry you, then I would have done it long ago.”
A loud crack was heard as Shippo was kicked in the ribs. Happily Chiyoko watched as Shippo gasped for air. “If I were you I’d watch what I say, little fox boy.”
Chiyoko was painting like a dog on a hot summer day. She attentively listened to the steady heart beat of the man she both loved and hated. While each breath he took echoed in her ears everything became clearer and sharp with color. The smell of his blood became stronger tempting her to have a taste.
He watched her eyes closely seeing the change in her soul. Just a little more and she would lose total control of herself letting her youkai take over fully. He had to know if she was capable, he had to push her to the limit. And apparently anger was the only way to do it. If she could learn to control herself when her youkai is out then he knew he didn’t have to worry about hurting her.
Chiyoko took a step toward Shippo and bent down. “I honestly don’t know how I could have ever fallen in love with a man like you. Look at you, just laying there letting a girl beat you up. What happen to the great warrior Shippo I once knew? What happen to the man who thought it was possible to kill me in a fit of passion? If you ask me you’re as weak as they come. You’re probably just as sorry in bed as you are out side of it.”
Shippo's fur rose with that insult. Beating him up was one thing but insulting him about his ablities in bed was something completely different. Although he had wanted her to get mad and let out her youkai he didn't think she would say something so mean. Knowing it wasn't like her to say such a thing, he did the only thing he could do, tried even harder to piss her off.
“fuck... you!” The words slowly left his mouth.
“No my dear, I might get bored if I let you do that to me.”
“Let me ask you something. Did you know you where a cock tease or was it something that came natural? Like Cheating did!”
That was the last straw. How dare he call her a cock tease? And the nerve of him to say that she cheated on him. It wasn’t even really possible when you thought about it.
With all her strength she balled up her fist and hit Shippo in his face. He hit the dresser as he slid across the room. Furiously Chiyoko made her way to him. “You bastard. How dare you accuse me of something like that?”
The smell of his blood was now almost unbearable. That’s when she remembered Shippo’s blood still covered her right hand. Looking at her hands she noticed her nails were twice there size in length now.
