Mnemosyne

Chapter XIV: Mnemosyne
_________________________________________________________________________________

Arena awoke after only a short rest to find that the entire group with the exception of Rin, had left the cave network. She gasped as she sat up and a wave of memories flooded her. ‘Good gods!’ she thought, ‘I think I am starting to remember who I am, or I guess who I used to be’.

“Where did everyone go, Rin?” she asked the young girl.

“They went to look at what brought down the Naraku. It is strange. I didn’t want you to wake up alone though so I stayed here.” Rin smiled a toothy grin.

“Thank you, that is very thoughtful of you.” Arena smiled back at her as she started to rise. She cried out as she tried to put her weight onto her feet. Apparently her ankle was still injured from Kohaku's weapon. She grimaced and held back a scream of pain. Great! What was she going to do now? There was no way Rin could carry her. So much for Sesshomaru and his promises. She heard a noise and looked at the cave entrance to see Miroku and Kagome coming in.

“Ah, Arena, you are awake. Good. That wasn’t too long. How are you feeling? We were just getting ready to leave.” Miroku said to her.

“I’m okay. Kagome can you come here for a second. There is something I need to tell you.” Kagome obeyed immediately, and Miroku cocked an eyebrow, curious at the urgency in Arena’s voice.

“What is it, Arena?” She asked.

“I think I remember who I am. I was getting flashbacks yesterday but I couldn’t figure anything out because of all the chaos. But just when I woke up this morning I remembered! I think I am actually a real person…”

“Of course you are real, so what do you remember? Do you finally know where you came from?”

“I live in London, England. My address is 4175 Gloucester Street. I have a small apartment there, which is about ten minute walk from where I work. But I also have a lot of memories of when I was younger, and it certainly was not in England. I think I was born in Italy. Yes, that sounds right, I come from a small town in the North called Asti. And I was born in 1974, which makes me approximately 32 years old.” Arena’s eyes sparkled at the memories.

“You are an Italian in England? But how can I understand you then?” Kagome wondered.

“Good gods, you are right. I didn’t even notice it. I should not be able to understand a thing around here. But, I cannot explain that. Could it have something to do with whatever threw me here in the first place?”

“Well, if you want my opinion, Arena, I think your close proximity to that strange rift last night is what brought back your memories.” Miroku said wisely.

“Actually, Miroku, that makes a lot of sense.” Arena looked at Kagome. “Perhaps the rift is how I need to get home.”

“I wonder if you could come through the well with me.” Kagome thought out loud.

“I doubt it, but when this is all over it might be worth a shot.” Arena answered as she tried to stand up again. “Um, Miroku, could you help me out of the caves?”

Miroku grinned, “gladly, my lady. Come, I will carry you.” Arena smiled inwardly and shook her head, silly Miroku.

Sesshomaru was starting to get annoyed. Everyone was still crowded around the big piece of rock that had fallen onto Naraku. It was ridiculous. No one knew what it was, so there was no point wasting time here anymore. They should be planning new battle strategies! He turned back to the caves to see if he could wake up Arena when he saw Kagome coming out of the entrance holding Rin’s hand. That must mean that Arena was awake! He looked behind her and saw Miroku carrying Arena. Sesshomaru’s eyes narrowed at the sight. Damn that lecherous monk, how dare he touch Arena! He started to seethe when the sight of Rin bounding up to him brought him back to his senses.

“Hello Lord Sesshomaru! Guess what, Arena is old! She’s much older than I am and even older than Kagome!”

“How do you know this, Rin?” Sesshomaru asked, slightly interested.

“Lady Arena has her memory back, Lord Sesshomaru. Ask her yourself!”

“What? Is this true Arena?” InuYasha said, overhearing Rin’s news.

“Sort of, when I woke up I suddenly remembered who I am and where I came from. I am actually from Kagome’s time, but from the other side of the world”, Arena answered.

“Are you going to leave us, Arena?” Shippou asked tearfully.

“I will eventually have to go home, Shippou. I don’t belong here. There must have been some reason that I was brought her, and when that purpose has been fulfilled, well, I must go home.”

“Hmph, of course you belong here, you silly human”, InuYasha responded, looking away. Kagome and Arena both relaxed, it looked as if InuYasha had completely forgiven Arena for healing Sesshomaru.

“Can someone help me over to the rock you are all looking at? I’m really curious to see what took out Naraku”, Arena asked. A very obliging Miroku put his arm around Arena and led her over to the fallen stone.

Arena gasped, “it is beautiful!”

“You know who this is? What happened to her?” InuYasha looked away from the stone, an embarassed blush on his face.

“Oh, InuYasha,” Arena and Kagome both giggled, “this was not a real person. Although you just paid Praxiteles quite a compliment”, Arena grinned, glad she was finally able to be useful. She continued when she saw the utterly confused look on everyone’s faces, “this is a statue, a carving out of marble, much like the column that we first saw. This particular statue is of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. You don’t have to be embarassed, InuYasha, look at her. She is beautiful is she not? She is naked to show the Greek ideal of female beauty. She is to be worshipped, not lusted after”, Arena lovingly ran a hand along the side of Aphrodite’s face, down her hair and neck and down to the crevice between her breasts, the Parian marble shone brightly in the moonlight and was cool to her touch. Kagome and Sango looked at each other, unsure whether they should all leave Arena alone with the beautiful stone Aphrodite, Sesshomaru shifted slightly on his feet. He could no longer deny the desire welling up inside him. All erotic feelings ebbed when he saw his brother scratching his head. What a fool. Arena started to stand back up again but her ankle buckled and she fell right back into Miroku’s arms. Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at him once again.

“What is wrong with you, Arena? How come you cannot walk?” Sango asked.

“Um, well, Sango, I, um, … my ankle was hurt during the battle.”

“Why do you hesitate, Arena? Was it Kohaku that hurt you?? Oh, I am so sorry, it is my fault. I always look for what is left of my little brother in him, and Naraku always uses that against us.” Sango looked heartbroken. Miroku put Arena down and went to put his arm around Sango’s shoulders. She raised her arm ready to slug him when she realized he was not trying to grope her, so instead she just let him comfort her. Arena and Kagome blushed and turned away, they knew Sango would not like to be seen in this weakened state. InuYasha, however, just stared wide-eyed.

“Why is he not getting slugged?” He couldn’t help but ask.

“Perhaps we should discuss our next move? It would be good to get out of this place, after all, Naraku knows where we are.” Sesshomaru stated.

“Sesshomaru, didn’t you mention asking the advice of the old tree demon in the forest?” Arena asked him. grateful for the change of topic.

“Yes, I will do that now if that is the will of the group.”

“Wait a minute, Sesshomaru, you don’t think you are going alone do you?” InuYasha glared at his brother.

“Yes, I had thought I would go alone. It would be much faster that way”, Sesshomaru answered blankly.

“No, I don’t think so. I don’t trust you. You’ll just make up something. I am going with you, that is for sure.” InuYasha said.

“He has a good point, InuYasha. We do not all need to be present.” Kagome said lightly.

“How about you take Arena with you, and we will continue to search for the source of the rift. It seems to be coming from the East so we can just head that way and meet up with you in a couple days. I am sure you will be able to find us easily”, Sango suggested, sneaking a small smile at Kagome.

“Yes, Sango, that is a perfect idea. That way if the tree demon is able to give any information Arena will be there to interpret it.” Kagome grinned back at Sango. Arena raised an eyebrow at the two younger women, they were certainly planning something. Arena sighed, ‘I’m too old for this’, she said to herself.

“As much as I would like to see an ancient tree demon, I am afraid I am not the most logical choice to accompany Sesshomaru. My ankle is injured and I would slow Sesshomaru down more than anyone else.”

“Oh, that is no problem, Arena. Lord Sesshomaru can carry you! And we will take care of Rin and Jaken”, Kagome said brightly. Everyone except Sango and Arena worried that her frank words would cause an outburst from Sesshomaru. To their surprise he merely nodded and moved over to Arena’s side. He looked down at her, his face was a mask hiding the tumultous emotions he was feeling.

“Alright. Just as long as you don’t carry me the way InuYasha did when we were going down the cliff!” she sighed. She didn’t like being so helpless.

Sesshomaru nodded and picked her up with his left arm under her knees and his right arm cradled behind her shoulders. “It is a day and a half journey to the edge of the ancient forest. The earliest we can catch up with you would be three days from now”, and without another word he leapt up into the sky.

Arena wrapped her left arm around Sesshomaru’s chest and her right around his neck as he leapt into the air.

“Did you have to do that without warning me? Or do you delight in startling me?” she asked him.

Sesshomaru didn’t hear her. He was too busy pondering whether he felt mad that he was stuck alone with the human, or whether he was excited at the prospect of finally being alone with her. His eyes started to narrow in a glare. Arena, who was still waiting for a response, started to get a bit worried. She wondered if it was in fact the best idea to place her life in Sesshomaru’s arms, with no one around to help should he desert her. She tightened her grip on him as he took another leap into the air. ‘I really miss trains’, she thought to herself and sighed. Her sigh brought Sesshomaru back to reality. He looked down at Arena and decided to do something he had never done before. He would just see how the journey followed, and then would decide whether to be anxious or excited about her presence. Sesshomaru, without realizing it, had decided to take the middle road. For once he was not allowing himself to clamp all his emotions inside for the sake of putting on a blank mask. It was a big step.

“We will stop in an hour or so to have a snack if you wish”, Sesshomaru said.

“Thank you, I can’t remember when I last ate, and I am certainly very hungry.”

Sesshomaru looked down at the small woman in his arms. Strange, he hadn’t noticed before how pale and sickly she had become. “Nevermind, Arena,” he said, “we will stop now. Then you can sleep through most of the journey.” Arena smiled weakly at him. Sesshomaru stopped near a small creek and put Arena down on a the grassy bed beside the water so that she could reach the water to drink it. He then went off in search of some fruit and edible plants. After he left Arena pulled herself closer to the water so that she could submerge her head and wash her face and hair. It felt so good to have the cool water wash away all the dust and grime that built up over the last few days of the journey. Oh how she longed for a hot spring to soak her tired limbs. Sesshomaru came back to the creek and saw Arena with her head in the water. He felt a horrible wrench in his gut at the thought that she might be drowning and he ran to her side, his breathing quick and sharp. Just as he got to her side Arena pulled her head out of the water and after wiping the water out of her eyes she started to wring out her short hair. Sesshomaru stopped himself two paces from her and watched the droplets of water as they fell from her hair, down her neck, and finally to dampen her shirt. Sesshomaru almost groaned as he thought about licking the droplets of water off her neck.

“Sesshomaru, you found something to eat! Fantastic! I am famished!” Sesshomaru handed Arena the food that he had found. As she ate he tried to calm his pounding heart. He watched her run her hands through her short and curly hair.

“What are you doing?” he asked her.

“I’m trying to get most of the water out of my hair, I don’t want to make your nice white clothes all wet”, Arena blushed at the image that immediately sprung to mind. Perhaps it wouldn’t be all that bad to see Sesshomaru with his shirt wet.

Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at Arena’s sudden embarassment. He would have given anything to know what she was thinking, but he knew enough not to ask. He didn’t wait for Arena to tell him she was ready to go. He picked her up bruskly and smiled as she instinctively wrapped her arms around him. He was quite enjoying surprising her.

Hmmm, Sesshomaru and Arena all alone together. I know what that leads to (and it isn't chess!)

Okay, is this worth continuing? I have had over 500 hits and only 2 reviews, that means less than 0.005 % of those reading this story have taken the time to review. Does that mean it is neither really bad nor really good? Should I bother to keep updating?

Next chapter is almost ready to go. Lets just say I looked to Ovid for inspiration for a scene between Sesshomaru and Arena. Whoever said Roman poets were boring? Ha! Anyway, chapter 15 coming soon.
