Miroku fell asleep a couple hours later with Sango stroking his hand and gazing at him, worry over her face. Inuyasha sat next to him on the other side, he restrained from holding his hand and kissing it several times. Kagome fell asleep quietly upset about Inuyasha’s new love for Miroku.
Two days went by, Miroku hid himself under the sheets most of the time so they didn’t exactly see him grow, but he knew it and he was starting to panic. He was six months pregnant in two days, it will make anyone panic. Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha could smell the rapid change in him. On the third day the monk lied down, as he gazed at Inuyasha’s golden eyes as they stared lovingly at his blue ones.
“Kagome knows…” The hanyou finally said.
“You told her?”
“No she figured it out… I guess I wasn’t very careful I’m sorry, please don’t be angry”
“I’m not Inuyasha…” Miroku sighed. “I was thinking of telling Sango…”
“You were?” The monk nodded as he sat up a little leaning on his elbows and stared at the sheet covering his feet.
“Where is Sango?”
“You want to tell her now?” Miroku nodded, still staring at his feet. “I’ll get her” Inuyasha got up. Miroku laid back down and stared at the ceiling, thinking of exactly how he was going to tell her.
“Miroku?” The monk turned his head to stare at the worried expression on Sango’s face. “Is something wrong? Inuyasha said you wanted to talk to me.” Miroku lifted he hand up wanting to hold hers. His eyes, which were so cheerful, were dull and sad. He gave her a smile trying to comfort her. “What is it?”
“Sango…Our time together was wonderful” Sango’s eyes started to well up with tears, thinking that Miroku is telling her that he’s dying. “I’m sure we’ll have many more wonderful times” he continued. “I love you Sango…” Sango let some tears fall. “Very much…but-“
“But?” she sniffed.
“I’m… I’m not in love with you” he looked away from her as he said that. She stared at him for a few seconds and looked away as well.
“I see…” she said sadly
“Please, Sango don’t hate me for what I’m about to tell you” her eyes shot back at him, he still was not looking at her and his eyes were watering. “I’m… I am with…Inuyasha…” he squeezed his eyes shut, expecting a slap across his face which didn’t come. Sango stared at him, eyes wide with shock still grasping his hand. Completely still, her expression astonished by this information that was so unexpected. Miroku cracked an eye open when he didn’t feel the sting of a slap on his face. He looked at her, his eyes wet, desperately not wanting her to hate him. She dropped his hand and stood up not saying a word. “Sango” he reached out for her “Sango, please” she walked off ignoring him, so many thoughts running through her head all at one time. Tears fell from his eyes as he watched her leave the room. He made to follow her completely forgetting his state, when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up and saw Inuyasha pushing him back down.
“Leave her, she needs some time to think” he said looking at the door. Miroku looked up at him with watery eyes and nodded, settling back down.
“She hates me” he whispered.
“No she doesn’t”
“I’ve humiliated her, she thinks I turned to you because I wasn’t getting a response from her”
“Miroku don’t stress, she’ll be fine, don’t worry about it. Look you need to rest, sleep, you need your energy”
“But all I’ve done is rest Inuyasha, I feel useless!”
“Miroku, sleep have you forgotten what will happen tonight? You need your strength for it” Miroku turned his head hating life at that point. A tear slid down the side of his head as he closed his eyes to sleep. Inuyasha stroked his hair until he heard the even breaths that indicated that the monk was fast asleep. Sesshoumaru signaled for Inuyasha to follow him, wanting to talk to him about something. Inuyasha frowned but complied. He followed Sesshoumaru out of the room and into the damp cave. He stopped in the middle of it.
“You have to mark him” the demon said without turning.
“What?”
“You have to mark him, you have to claim him before anyone else does”
“Anyone else like who?” Inuyasha growled, not being able to talk to his brother without getting angry.
“Naraku”
“Naraku can’t find us here, there is a barrier outside of the cave, there is no way-“
“Naraku is a strong demon, he can break that barrier in a second. The monk’s only safe because Naraku doesn’t know where he is… yet”
“You mean if he finds him-“
“That’s why you must mark him”
“What will that do! That won’t stop Naraku!” the hanyou was starting to panic.
“Claim him so he wouldn’t be claimed by Naraku, once he’s claimed by that demon… you will never see him again”
“And if I mark him, Naraku wouldn’t be able to, right!?” Sesshoumaru nodded. “but, it will hurt him”
Miroku frowned, feeling pain on his abdomen. He opened his eyes and lifted the sheets to see his huge belly. He covered it back up. Something wasn’t right, he was in pain. He squeezed his eyes shut and held on to his large tummy. “Ah… ahh…” he moaned, but no one seemed to hear him. Kagome was asleep and Sango was sleeping on Kirara while Shippo zonked out on the floor. He looked the other direction and tried to find Inuyasha. “Ahh” he felt the pain again but it was worse this time. Kagome shifted and lifted her head at the noise. Miroku turned his head from side to side feeling sick and in pain. Kagome jumped up realizing it was close to midnight, Miroku might have the baby soon. She shook Sango awake, who sleepily looked at her as she dashed over to Miroku’s side. Sango jumped up and went to him. He was panting and beads of sweat started to form on his forehead.
“Miroku, what do you feel?” Kagome asked dabbing his forehead with a dry cloth.
“Pain” he said through his teeth. He felt his hand being grasped and looked to his side. He smiled while panting as he saw her looking down at him. “S-Sango!” he panted “Please, please forgive me, I didn’t mean to hurt you I’m sorry” he panted as some tears fell from his eyes. She shook her head and smiled, patting his hand
“Don’t worry about it” she said smiling he smiled back, but right before he bit his hand trying to suppress his screams of pain that was running through him. He didn’t want to call out for Inuyasha, not to hurt Sango’s feelings. “Kagome don’t you have anything that could help with the pain?”
“No I don’t know what to give him” She replied feeling helpless. Shippo woke up to the noise and crawled beside Miroku.
“Miroku, do you need anything?” Miroku shook his head.
“N-no thank you Shippo” He felt a terrible pain worse than all the others and knew it was time. He let out a scream, biting on a cloth that Kagome had given him. He panted harshly as Sango dabbed at his forehead. He couldn’t take it anymore, he needed Inuyasha.
“Inuyasha, please… I need him” he cried. Kagome jumped up.
“I’ll get him!” Miroku held Sango’s hand with both of his.
“I’m so sorry Sango, I love you I really do!” he panted tears falling from his eyes “forgive me, forgive me” Sango tried to calm him down as Kagome came back and a red blur went right past her.
“Miroku, Miroku I’m here” Miroku grasped Inuyasha’s hand with his left and Sango’s with his right. Sesshoumaru came walking in casually and sat away from the group. Miroku was panting harshly and sweating profusely.
“Okay I think he’s going to have it any moment. Let’s go Sango, Shippo, Inuyasha I don’t think he wants us to see him like this, better to give him privacy” Kagome said picking up the little fox demon. Miroku panicked.
“No! No! Please stay, I need you here, I don’t want to die alone please, please don’t leave me please!” he freaked out tears pouring out of his eyes. He always secretly feared of dying alone, like his grandfather and father before him. He didn’t mind dying, if someone was there with him to hold him as he slipped into the next life. He felt the hole tear and he screamed. He spread his legs further apart and screamed again as he felt it tear more. He held on to his friends hands in a painful grasp which they didn’t mind, for he was in much greater pain.
“You can do it, just don’t think about it” Inuyasha said as Kagome dabbed his brow.
“It will be all over soon Miroku, you’re strong you can do this” Sango encouraged him. He screamed and threw his head back. His head shot back up and it faced Inuyasha. “I love you Inuyasha” he said desperately. Inuyasha stared at him unable to say or think anything.
A couple minutes later he fell back onto the mattress and panted closing his eyes. Everyone peered over his legs to see an egg, covered in blood, but from what they could see it was black egg that was glowing just a little. “What should we do?” Sango said still looking at it.
“Crush it” Inuyasha growled.
“The egg cannot be crushed, it has to hatch first… It won’t be long” Sesshoumaru said from across the room. Everyone stared at him except for Inuyasha who’s attention was directed at the motionless monk.
“Miroku…?” He asked, the monk did not respond. “Miroku!” Inuyasha shook him a bit getting the attention of everyone else. “MIROKU!” Inuyasha stared at the tear stained face. A large tear slid down Inuyasha’s cheek.
